Summary

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is one of the most celebrated budget gaming CPUs in recent memory, and Reddit users across multiple threads confirm it still holds up well even years after launch. Sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with most owners reporting smooth 1440p gaming paired with mid-range GPUs like the RX 6700 XT, RTX 3080, or even the RTX 4070 Ti. The 65W TDP and included cooler make it an easy drop-in for existing AM4 builds, and its current street price around $100 is widely considered a steal. The main debate isn't whether it's good — it's whether you should bother with AM4 at all when AM5 offers a longer upgrade path.

Pros

  • Handles 1440p gaming with ease when paired with appropriate mid-to-high-end GPUs like the RX 6800 XT or RTX 3080 — users report 100+ FPS in most AAA titles at high settings
  • Exceptional value at current ~$100 pricing: originally launched at $300, it now offers the same performance for a third of the cost, making it ideal for budget and upgrade builds alike
  • Low 65W TDP keeps thermals and power draw manageable, and it ships with a usable stock cooler — rare for a performance CPU at this tier
  • Broad AM4 compatibility means it drops into most existing B450/B550 boards after a BIOS update, saving users from buying a new platform just to upgrade
  • Strong single-core performance from Zen 3 IPC gives it an edge in CPU-sensitive games and esports titles where frame rates matter more than core counts
  • Pairs cleanly with GPUs up to the RTX 4070 Ti at 1440p and 4K without meaningful bottlenecking — GPU remains the limiting factor in most scenarios at those resolutions

Cons

  • Only 6 cores and 12 threads is a soft ceiling for CPU-intensive workloads like simultaneous gaming and software encoding — users running x264 streaming notice the constraint
  • At 1080p with a high-end GPU (RTX 4070+), frame times and 1% lows can suffer in CPU-bound games like Monster Hunter Wilds or dense open-world titles with large NPC crowds
  • AM4 is a dead-end platform — buying a new AM4 motherboard today locks you out of future CPU upgrades beyond Zen 3, whereas AM5 offers continued support through upcoming generations
  • The non-X 5600 performs within 1-3% in virtually all benchmarks and costs less — the 5600X's small clock speed advantage rarely justifies its price premium on the used market
  • Upgraders seeking meaningful gaming gains on AM4 should target the 5700X3D or 5800X3D instead, which deliver substantially better 1% lows and CPU-limited frame rates via 3D V-Cache
  • Originally launched at $300 in 2020, making early adopters pay a significant premium — the value proposition only became excellent as the price dropped over time

Still Running Strong Years Later

Owners report zero regrets running the 5600X with GPUs as powerful as the RTX 4080 at 4K — the CPU rarely becomes the bottleneck at higher resolutions, and many users plan to ride it out for several more years before considering a platform switch.

The $100 Dilemma: Buy AM4 or Invest in AM5?

Reddit's most common debate around the 5600X isn't performance — it's platform strategy. If you're upgrading an existing AM4 build, it's an easy win. But if you're building from scratch, spending a bit more on AM5 gives you a longer runway and access to faster DDR5 memory.

Skip the X, Just Get the 5600

Multiple users across r/buildapc and r/AMDHelp point out that the standard 5600 non-X performs within 1-2% in games and costs noticeably less — one user even swapped from a 5600X to the 5600 and noticed no difference across any of their games or applications.

Nah, it should hold you for a couple years. Folks are too obsessed with thinking parts are only good for a few years then obsolete to the point of trash.

Yes, worth the upgrade from 3600. But IMO if you already have the motherboard and ram you're probably better off getting a X3D variant. But if you're just looking for a solid performance boost it's worth it. You can also sell your 3600 for ~$75 to make up some of the money spent.

Yes it's a good CPU. I'm sure budget is a concern when building a PC as a gift and I think the 5600X is great CPU for this purpose. It will be more than enough to get him up and running and enjoying games with you guys.

5600x is still great outside of specific use-cases, but if you're buying a new motherboard it might make sense to keep the old machine intact.

To be honest, the 5600 should be enough to skip the whole AM5 platform. Just thinking about how long people had been using the I5 2500K.

im rocking the 5600x with a 3070 for 1440p gaming. i have it very slightly overclocked with PBO settings. i dont have any issue maintaining 60-144fps (depending on the game). playing witcher 3 i think i average around 90FPS with settings cranked up pretty high.

5600 and the 5600x are both still really solid options for a CPU that'll give huge gains over a 3100. 8 core requirements aren't really a thing in general with games right now, more of them support 8 cores that's hardly a requirement.

Solid deal. at $100 you'd be hard pressed to find something more performant.

My 5600x still performing well 3 years later. Paired with a 4070, I have zero issues. Can always upgrade to 5800x3d down the road before making the jump to zen4.

The 5600x is perfect for gaming if you want low as possible latency and the best experience without busting the bank.

If you are on Ryzen 1000 or 2000 and your motherboard can take Ryzen 5000 chips, just get this. Pretty much a no brainer upgrade for people who plan on staying on AM4.

5600/x is still very fine today, and is considered for budget builds.

Getting a free processor from your buddy would allow you to get a cheap, fairly nice CPU + mobo + RAM for a little cheaper. But it sounds like you want an enthusiast system, and you're willing to pay a bit more to avoid a bottleneck.

I currently use a 1600X with no issues. The 5600X will be solid for the next few years.

If you want to save a few hundred dollars and plan to upgrade again in a few years, get the 5600x. I have two very similar builds — a 7600x with a 2080ti and 5600x with a 2080 super. In 4k, getting about 20 fewer FPS with the 5600x rig in newer games. Older games run pretty much the same.

As a person who bought this at $300 almost a year ago, it's a beast of a CPU.

I got a 5600x and 6800xt. I can run anything I want at 1440p. It works so smooth that I'm not planning on buying a new pc for 2 more generations.

I have R5 5600x since September of 2023 and i recently upgraded the GPU. I had a rtx 2060 and got now rx 7800 xt. I play at 1440p and I can say it is an ok combo. I can play all games at ultra settings without ray tracing 1440p above 100 fps.

Damn straight it is worth buying! Ryzen 5 5600X remains the most popular gaming CPU in the Zen 3 lineup. Its got excellent single and multithreaded performance and 32MB of L3 cache, the CPU destroys most of its competitors for its price.

I bought this CPU for $312 in 2021. It's a very good CPU and it is a great deal at $100.

In most situations, it's still good for supporting a gpu as high as a 7800xt / 7900gre. So unless you're doing really cpu heavy stuff / sim gaming, it should do you fine for a good while yet. If starting from scratch I'd go am5 though. The ddr5 uplift alone is noticeable and while it's a bit more money now, the platform will likely last you 5-7 years longer than a new am4 build would.

It's a perfectly good CPU. Though I'd only recommend going for the 5600X over the 5600 if it's only up to $10 more in your area. Otherwise the small bump in core speed isn't really worth it.

Mine is still going strong. Idk why people need the newest hardware every year when they play games made in 2010's.

5600x is an amazing cpu considering the price to performance ratio. im currently running 5600x overclocked to almost 5ghz with undervolt idle temp 29°C load temp 55°C. Getting 120fps battlefield 2042, 250fps cs2, 350fps valorant.

AM4 is still good enough for like, half a decade imo. I used the 2600 from 2019 and only recently swapped to 5600 because I could spare the money for it, but until then I had no issues with games.

I just built a PC I plan to sell with a 5600. After hours of benchmarking, it's still a solid CPU. It's only one generation behind and I can see it having longevity for 3-5 years.

Last time I played around with a 5600X it was building a machine for my friends daughter and it had a struggle maxing out a 6700XT in some games. The 4070ti is twice as fast as the 6700XT. I personally think its a bad combo, but considering I snagged a 4070ti myself the other day for only $400 I can see where you might want to take advantage of a bargain to make a decent machine.

I only buy chips that last for 6 years. I have a 5600X and my previous was an i7 4790k. I'm not upgrading.

Mine has handled everything I've thrown at it except Jedi Survivor, the worst PC port in recent memory. And even that runs alright now for the most part. It's going to handle everything for the foreseeable future, because everything is designed with current gen consoles in mind, which have notably weaker CPU's inside them.

I run a 5600x and 6800XT, built it specifically for gaming at 4k (or close) at 60 fps 90% of the time in the living room. It gets fairly high fps on the office 1440p monitor as well, but the CPU does hold it back a bit. 5600x is pretty solid though.

Yes it's still a very valid choice for a budget build. The 5600 non X is a little cheaper usually and performs within 1-2% of the X, get that instead. 5600x owner, paired with a 6800xt at 3440x1440p, I have yet to encounter a title where I'm cpu limited. It's always the gpu that's limiting perf.

I went from a 2600x to this, and I doubled my FPS in every game I play. For 100 bucks its pretty dang good.

I'm still rocking a 5600x in 2025. Since I use my PC for couch gaming on a 60hz TV even the latest games don't really push it that hard. AC Shadows with everything on high including diffuse RTGI still leaves a lot of headroom to spare on the CPU.

I have a 5600x with rtx 4070 super and ive done literally everything to optimise the pairing however i do feel the cpu is a bit weak and will be looking to upgrade in the future. as i play warzone ranked maybe a 5700x3d or 5800x3d second hand when the price goes down a bit.

The 5600x is a great budget CPU. It's literally a new CPU that just became a one generation old CPU. Buy it. Enjoy games faster than what you have now.

Personally I am about to get rid of it. I play a lot of strategy, 4x and simulation games, and the difference in performance to a newer chip is just too big for me now. Vic 3 becomes such a slog after 1880s for me, while the 7800x3d breezes through that kind of game.

my setup: 5600 + asrock B550m riptide + red devil RX 6700 XT, can run anything at 1440p with no issue! cyberpunk 2077 can run at 60-80 fps with max settings (no ray tracing).
