Summary

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D earned legendary status in the Reddit community as arguably the best value gaming CPU AMD ever made for the AM4 platform. Powered by 96MB of 3D V-Cache stacked on top of an 8-core Zen 3 die, it delivered gaming performance that matched or beat CPUs costing far more while letting existing AM4 users skip a full platform upgrade. Reddit consensus is almost uniformly positive from owners — many saying they plan to ride it until AM6 — though newcomers are frustrated by how hard and expensive it's become to find since AMD stopped production in late 2024. The chip is EOL, currently out of stock at retail, and selling used on eBay for $400+ due to high demand from people wanting to stay on DDR4 while DDR5 prices are inflated.

Pros

  • Best gaming CPU ever released for AM4: drop-in upgrade for any AM4 board, no need for new RAM or motherboard, making it the cheapest path to top-tier gaming performance for Zen 2 and Zen 1 owners
  • 96MB 3D V-Cache dramatically improves 1% lows and eliminates stutters in CPU-heavy titles — users upgrading from 3600 or 3700X report 30-40% average FPS gains and near-elimination of frame dips
  • Holds up surprisingly well against AM5 CPUs: benchmarks put it roughly on par with the 9600X in most games, with some titles where it still wins thanks to cache advantages
  • Pairs effectively with high-end GPUs including the 4090 — multiple users confirm it isn't the bottleneck even with top-tier graphics cards at 1440p
  • Doesn't rely on fast RAM — performs near its peak even on DDR4-3200, removing expensive RAM as a variable compared to other Zen 3 chips
  • Excellent for CPU-bound genres: strategy games, simulation titles, poorly-optimized open worlds, MMOs, and emulation all benefit massively from the large cache

Cons

  • Production ended in late 2024 — no new units are being manufactured; stock has dried up at major retailers and prices have surged to $400-500+ on eBay, making it hard to justify vs. just moving to AM5
  • Multi-threaded performance is worse than a regular 5800X due to lower base clocks imposed by the V-Cache — users doing Blender rendering, video encoding, or heavy compilation found it noticeably slower
  • Only 8 cores: those coming from 5900X or 5950X lose core count for modest gaming gains — a real trade-off for workstation-style users
  • At current used prices ($400+), a new AM5 system with a 9800X3D offers better performance, warranty, and a future-proof platform — multiple users point out new 9800X3D can be found for less than a used 5800X3D without warranty
  • No overclocking support — PBO is disabled at BIOS level, and voltage tweaking is extremely limited compared to normal Zen 3 chips
  • Runs hot and needs a substantial cooler — the 105W TDP combined with the V-Cache thermal characteristics requires more cooling attention than similarly clocked Zen 3 SKUs

Owners say it still keeps up with modern CPUs — but finding one is another story

Reddit is full of 5800X3D owners insisting they have no reason to upgrade even paired with high-end GPUs, but those trying to buy one face out-of-stock shelves and eBay prices that sometimes exceed what a full AM5 build would cost.

The DDR5 price crisis accidentally made this discontinued chip desirable again

The ongoing DDR5 RAM shortage and price surge has renewed demand for the 5800X3D as a way to stay on cheap DDR4 while still getting competitive gaming performance — a situation AMD did not anticipate when they ended production.

Multi-threaded workloads are where the magic ends

Users who switched from 12-core chips like the 5900X report the 5800X3D is noticeably slower in Blender, video encoding, and CPU-intensive creative work — the 3D cache only helps gaming, and the lower clocks actively hurt everything else.

Wow. A 5800X3D? I can't believe you'd consider using such an outdated processor. You should be ashamed of yourself. /s

got my 5800x3d years ago best purchase ever. I was ever so hesitant from coming from the 3700x cpu but the magic that was 3d cache can not be underestimated. now if we can just get a big amd gpu i wouldn't have to worry for a while.

5800X3D performance was at or above most AM5 processors in most games until the AM5 X3D family came out so yes it still good and the most cost effective upgrade within your existing hardware.

I have just upgraded to 5800x3d from a 3600. It's literally the best gaming cpu for am4. You will be fine for years with it probably.

I feel like they won't considering production has been shut down for over a year. The 5700x3D, 5600x3D and 5500x3D are made from already existing 5800x3D chips that failed QA. I don't think any AM4 x3D silicon has rolled off the assembly line since last September.

It's incredible the increase in performance AMD is able to extract with a lower power draw to produce those results. It's also interesting to see which workloads scale better with the increased cache, and which prefer the higher frequency of the 5800x.

It's kinda sad how badly people must be buying into the 'must have newest thing' hype, that this question even gets asked. 'Is the faster processor 9 months ago too slow now?' Please.

I don't plan to upgrade my 5800X3D rig until at least AM6. The 16GB DDR4 is probably going to run out of steam long before the CPU does though, and if you're buying a new CPU and more RAM the value proposition of just moving to AM5 starts to look a bit more balanced.

I chose to upgrade from 2700x to the 5800x3d for a few reasons: I already have am4 motherboard so no need to upgrade mobo and ram. I pretty much only use my computer for gaming and the 5800x3d is looking to be the best gaming CPU for the am4 platform and I am hoping it will let me get another 4-5 years out of my PC before needed to build a new one.

The 5800X3D is indeed genuinely the fastest gaming CPU on the AM4 platform. Compared to AM5, on average it's slightly slower than a 7600X. In one or two games it's a bit faster than the 7600X... about on par with a 9600X. The 7800X3D is about 20%~25% faster than a 7600X.

The 5800X3D is great if you already have an AM4 and just want a CPU upgrade. Otherwise, the i5-13600KF is better bang for your buck. If you're playing AAA games where you're GPU bottlenecked though, neither of those CPUs will give you much of an increase over a 5600.

One of the best purchases I've made in recent times. Not only was it fast, it provides a different type of performance that simply jacking up the clock speed or adding more cores doesn't do. The stable 1% lows and like 200% increased fps completely rejuvenated the AM4 platform. It became the outright best chip for some games, especially strategy and simulation ones.

5800x3d + 3060ti is perfect for me in valorant and league of legends 1440p 240hz. A noticeable upgrade over my 2 year old 5600x.

I would strongly recommend continuing to use the 5800X3D unless you have a 4090 or better. It's a really bad time to be upgrading anything right now and if you got good hardware (you do) I would ride out the next few years.

I tried switching out my 5950x with a 5800X3D for a little bit. The difference in gaming wasn't all that noticable for me and the games I play. I ended up giving the 5800X3D to my nephew and going back to the 5950X. I need all the core for blender, code compilation and other multi-threaded workstation stuff, so I found the 5800X3D too slow for embarassingly parallel workloads.

MOST DEFINITELY!! that cpu can power a 4090 no problem, even beats my 7950x in certain games. AMAZING CPU

This chip performs great even with ddr4 3200 which I have had for like 3-4 years now. So yeah, no other CPU+RAM+Board combo can match the performance without costing hundreds more.

I went 5800x3d and 4090 around the same time, and have no intention of upgrading platforms for many, many years. I'm done chasing the latest finally. Maybe in 5-6 years if there's a scenario on my sim rig that I can't run something up to par, then I'll consider it.

My regular PC has a 5800x3D with a 7900XTX running 4K. Without an FPS counter I can't tell the difference in performance between them. Even with an FPS counter it's minor. Like 5%-10% difference. No way I'd spend the money it takes right now to update from AM4 to AM5.

Honestly? Im for it. Rocking the 5800X3D/5070 12gb/32gb DDR4 and I can confidently say this is a system that'll last me until 2030 and maybe even beyond.

Basic economics: high demand + low supply = high prices. People want to hold in to their systems with ddr4 ram yet want better performance. The 5800x3d and 5700x3d are the natural choices to get better gaming performance. As has been stated, those chips are out of production. High demand and low supply results in painful prices.

Just upgraded from a 3600 to 5800x3d and I have a 6700xt. The performance increase in games is ridiculous, nearly a 30-40 frame difference in most games with upping some graphic settings. Rust for instance I was getting roughly 65 average and dips down to 50 in high intensity areas now I stay around 140 and sometimes dip down to high 120's.

Yeah, the prices for it are insane. I paid less than 20 euros after selling my AM4 5800x3d build to upgrade to the AM5 9800x3d. New 9800x3d with warranty cost less than used 5800x3d with no warranty.

If you are upgrading from any AM4 CPU, then yes it's worth it and not even by a little. It's cheap now and will honestly won't hold you back in any capacity for your foreseeable future. It isn't technically the best upgrade, but it is the best upgrade for the money.

A year ago, I was looking at the 5800x3d as a slot-in upgrade to replace my 3700x - I was tired of being cpu limited on my 4090. The prices were ridiculous, and I was lucky enough to be able to just upgrade to AM5 and get the 9800x3d and be happy it was meaningfully faster than the 56/57/5800x3d chips.

The 5800X3D has performance parity with AM5 and the 13000-series at 4k, so your only concern would be GPU limitations. You can get that chip now and a better GPU next year and be set for the next 5 years.

I got the 5800x 3D 6800 XT and don't see no reason to upgrade anytime soon. Not worth it for complete overhaul for a tiny performance in gaming. I want at least 50% performance upgrade on the CPU and GPU. Until then unless something breaks I will be staying with that.

Funny seeing some of the prices people are paying for the 5800X3D because they literally could've bought an AM5 motherboard, 32GB DDR5 ram and a 9600X for a similar price.

I have a 5800x3d paired with a 6800xt. The only time I can see the limitation of the platform is when multitasking or video editing including streaming. Games like the new mw2 you can see a frame uplift around 240 with Fsr set to quality.

It's $400 which is a bit much on a dead end platform like AM4, but I guess it's worth it if you want the best gaming performance on AM4.

So glad that I bought it early last year to upgrade from the 5600X. It might've been a sidegrade at the time, but now it's shown that its worth with latest games. This will last me until AM6.
