The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has earned near-unanimous recognition as the best gaming CPU on the market, with Reddit consistently crowning it the top choice for anyone building a high-end gaming rig. It delivers roughly 10-15% better gaming performance over the already-excellent 7800X3D, with the biggest gains showing up in CPU-bound titles like simulation, MMO, and competitive games rather than GPU-limited 4K scenarios. The chip runs impressively cool and efficient compared to Intel alternatives, which resonates strongly with users coming from power-hungry Intel platforms. It sits at around $449-479 MSRP, but availability issues at launch drove prices well above MSRP at some retailers. For pure gaming, it has no real competition — the only legitimate alternative is the pricier 9950X3D, which trades some gaming headroom for extra productivity cores.

The 7800X3D can often be found for $100-150 less and gets you 85-90% of the performance. Reddit consensus: if you're on a budget or upgrading from 7800X3D, save the money. If you're buying new, go 9800X3D.
Users switching from 14900KF or 9900K rigs are stunned by how cool and quiet the 9800X3D runs. No throttle fights, no power budget drama — it's become a selling point almost as big as the raw performance gains.
If it is just the same RRP as the 7800X3D ($449) people should take that for a win, but given AMD's previous Zen 5 pricing its likely to be higher so $499 is unfortunately more likely.
View Original Comment$700CDN + $30 shipping +tax in ontario = ~$824 WTF. forget the lube, just stick it in.
View Original CommentMicrocenter seems to always have a bunch in stock. I just wished I had one near me.
View Original CommentThere's nothing better than the 9800x3d for gaming.
View Original CommentBest case scenario would be last gen pricing ($450 for 9800x3d) but I wouldn't be surprised if they would sell it at higher price, they have 0 competition in this market so they'll do whatever they want. 7800x3d is best gaming CPU at this moment and new x3d generation will be even faster.
View Original CommentThe 9800X3D is the fastest gaming processor on the market right now and beats every Intel CPU, that's why the Intel CPU's are cheaper.
View Original CommentIf I was buying a CPU for gaming now it would unquestionably be the 9800X3D.
View Original CommentOpinions on 9850x3d? Even for people who dont own a 9800x3d this refresh chip takes a pretty huge hit in efficiency for its minor performance uplifts. I was planning on upgrading to this but considering I build in SFF it might just be better to pick the 9800x3d instead (especially with the price drops). I'd say this iteration is mid. Luckily it doesn't cost much more but that's about it.
View Original CommentMy wow buddies wouldn't give up their X3D CPU's for anything, especially if you raid a lot apparently.
View Original CommentPrice just jumped from $699.99 to $799.99 I am gonna wait it out.
View Original CommentThe only processor which is better than 9800x3d is 9950x3d. Everything that's 9800x3d with extra cores for enhanced computation.
View Original CommentSurge pricing for online retailers, my lord corporate greed knows no boundaries. Price has gone up $100/hour lmao. The days of finding deals might go the way of the dinosaurs soon.
View Original CommentYeah, IMO the margin doesn't justify the gains, just like most modern TDP-boosted chips. It certainly has its place, though, and I imagine it does better than the 9800X3D when given the 9800X3D's power budget.
View Original CommentUs: "Wasn't this 700$ before?" Newegg: "Look at me, I'm the scalper now!"
View Original CommentIf they're still sold out everywhere, MicroCenter in Overland Park, MO has always had like 25 of them.
View Original CommentIt completely crushes the flagship intel CPUs by 20-30% for gaming.
View Original CommentAdded one to my Amazon cart yesterday morning. However I deleted it from the cart because the delivery date was for January 15-26. Anyways I use an app called HotStock, it checks popular retailers for hard to get products, every minute. Grabbed one on Newegg 10 minutes ago, delivery date Nov. 15.
View Original CommentPersonally if I were you, I'd wait for Zen 6 in 2026 or so, the Ryzen 7600 is very decent still. personally I upgraded from an Intel Core i7-8086K to a Ryzen 7800X3D rather than the 9800X3D, because the difference was $100 for a ~15% performance boost or so, which for me was not worth it.
View Original CommentI got one and I never need to consider CPU bottle neck, that's why I got it. Hell, if the CPU is bottle necked, not much you can do if you bought the best there is!
View Original Comment9800x3d is best. 9900x3d and 9950x3d suffer from an odd ccd and 3dvcache layout which increases latency. Go with the 9800x3d and save money on cores you won't ever use.
View Original CommentI just built a 9800x3d over the weekend, 449 at microcenter. Coming from intel the 9800 power usage is amazing. I could return and get the new 50 but I'm not worried about it. If it was already out sure I probably would have gone 9850 but I'll take my power draw win and enjoy it for a long time. I'm so used to seeing high temps and fighting throttles, this cpu is awesome.
View Original CommentThere are other use cases/games that would benefit from a higher tier CPU than GPU. Especially one with a large cache. iRacing, DCS, Squad, Escape from Tarkov, MSFS, Factorio.. the list goes on. Especially if you're on a 1080p monitor. VR uses a ton of CPU power too.
View Original CommentA lot of people still play in 1080P and 1440P than just 4K. You are absolutely going to see a difference in those lower resolutions. HW's review shows 11% faster than 7800X3D at 1080P. While the difference is less on higher resolutions, you are still absolutely going to see a difference if you upgrading from a lot lower end CPU.
View Original Comment285K is actually terrible and loses even to some previous gen Intel processors in some games.
View Original CommentPeople play simulation games and other games that are CPU limited. Cities Skylines, Rimworld, RTS games, etc. Some games are very demanding on the CPU even with a 4090 at 4k. The reason they test at 1080p is as a benchmark. Not because it's the intended use case. People generally buy a CPU and use it for half a decade at least. This lets you see how much overhead it has.
View Original CommentFor gaming that is the CPU to go for if money is no object.
View Original CommentIf the 9800X3D didn't exist I'd imagine no one would be really talking about the power draw of the 9850X3D for the level of performance delivered. What will be interesting to see is how well it undervolts. It's such a highly binned version of this chip I would not be surprised if it can be made to run cooler than a 9800X3D if set close to 9800X3D performance.
View Original CommentCPU-bound games see much larger gains than the typical 5-10% you see in singleplayer AAA titles that most reviewers benchmark with. The 9800X3D can be up to 20-35% faster than the 7800X3D in some CPU-bound games.
View Original CommentThe 14900kf is known to kill itself, they've supposedly fixed it, but everyone with technical knowledge knows they aren't likely to last long, and they run hot AF. The 285k is just underwhelming, losing to the 14900kf in performance a lot of the time. The 9800X3D is based on refinements of previous generation chips, and runs at reasonable temps while outperforming both of Intel's top options.
View Original CommentIt's the strongest gaming cpu. 285k and 9950x3d are the best productivity cpus (9950x3d is better overall than 285k but they have their strong points).
View Original CommentI'm usually an intel guy. I'm building with a 9950x3d which right now is probably the best cpu available but that is for more than just gaming. if just gaming the 9800x3d is what you want. my other pc is a 14900kf. I was going to replace my 4080 with a new 5090. now I'm pairing the 5090 with the 9950x3d build.
View Original CommentI'm not sure why anyone is shocked. This is pretty standard from Newegg. Canada usually gets restocked after the US and with a small supply for the first few months after a launch. They've noticed this, and when demand causes a short in our market, they exploit it. I'm not defending it, but I've seen it before. This just seems worse since the demand for the 9800X3D is so high.
View Original CommentWhen I crossed over to the dark side from console, I was playing on 1440 but had no idea what I was doing pairing a I9 9900k with a 3080 in 2020. Now I'm a smooth brained sweaty ape who just wants frames and moved to 1080P 360hz. Can confirm—300FPS on marvel rivals is incredible. I9 9900k was putting out around 120. VERY happy 9800X3D, 3080 owner running 1080P, 360hz.
View Original CommentMSRP vs MSRP it's fine ($20 more). With the 9800X3D at $449 though, that's a much better value. I think with how the prices change, the value of each other will fluctuate. At most I'd pay 10% more for up to 5% performance bump.
View Original CommentIf your Mobo is AsRock go with the 7800x3d! Otherwise, let your wallet decide.
View Original CommentI went with 7800x3d and 9070 XT. I was considering a 14900KF build after seeing a massive discount on them but it was there for a reason. Many people pointed out that the last year's August firmware update resolved much of the instability issues but there were inconsistent reporting.
View Original CommentIf you want to get gaming performance for cheaper price than 9800x3d get the 7800x3d that is more than enough and also way cheaper and easier to find. But 9800x3d is definitely the best money can buy for gaming. 9950x3d unnecessary for gaming.
View Original CommentI regret getting the 7800x3d instead of 9800x3d. The temperature on the 7800x3d is crazy even with Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 evo.
View Original CommentThey're both pretty close in performance. Biggest difference is 1% lows and I'd choose the 9800X3D without budgets in consideration.
View Original CommentUnless you have a very high end GPU or you're a professional Counterstike/Valorant player, there's no reason to get this over a 7500F or something. Spending an extra $400-500 on a GPU will improve performance much more than going from a 7000 series Ryzen 5 or 13th gen i5 to the 9800X3D.
