Summary

The Intel Core 5 120 is a rebranded i5-12400, an Alder Lake 6+0 die that Intel has quietly relaunched under its new Core naming scheme for LGA1700 boards. Reddit sentiment is largely cynical — most enthusiasts immediately recognized it as a years-old chip with a 100 MHz clock bump and a fresh sticker. That said, the underlying 12400 silicon has always been respected as a capable budget gaming chip, and the Core 5 120 inherits that reputation. It's best viewed as a drop-in upgrade option for existing LGA1700 owners on DDR4, not a compelling choice for new builds in 2025. The pricing controversy is real — early retailer listings at $216+ drew heavy criticism given the original 12400F still sells for around $100.

Pros

  • Proven Alder Lake 6P/12T core design with no E-core thread scheduling headaches — a genuine plus for gaming workloads where Windows has historically mismanaged hybrid architectures
  • Drop-in upgrade for LGA1700 DDR4 systems — no new motherboard or RAM required, which keeps total upgrade cost low for people already on 12th gen platforms
  • Low memory latency from its monolithic die gives it a small but real edge over Zen 4 in certain CPU-sensitive titles like Stalker 2
  • The non-F variant (Core 5 120) retains integrated graphics, making it more versatile for OEM builds and systems without discrete GPUs
  • Mature platform support — LGA1700 ecosystem is well-understood, widely available used, and boards are cheap on the secondary market

Cons

  • Effectively identical to the i5-12400F which launched in 2021 — the only change is a 100 MHz boost clock increase, making this a branding exercise more than a product launch
  • Early retailer pricing at $216–$246 is hard to justify when the 12400F sits around $100 and the 14400F can be had for $150 — the value case collapses unless pricing normalizes significantly
  • Only 18MB of L3 cache is notably limited for 2025, especially against AMD's cache-heavy budget stack including the 5800X3D and upcoming AM4 X3D chips
  • LGA1700 is a dead-end socket — Intel has confirmed it's being retired, making any investment here a stopgap with no upgrade path
  • For new builders, AMD's AM5 budget lineup (7500F, 7600, 9600) offers better value with a viable upgrade path, making the Core 5 120 a tough sell outside of existing platform upgrades

LGA1700 Owners: The Only People Who Should Care About This CPU

Reddit consensus is clear — the Core 5 120 is not for new builders. Its real audience is the surprisingly large segment of users still running 12th gen with DDR4 who want a modest bump without platform migration costs. For everyone else, AMD offers a better path.

Is Intel Charging a Rebrand Tax?

The controversy isn't the chip — it's the price. Enthusiasts on r/intel pointed out that early listings at $216+ border on absurd when functionally identical silicon is available for half the cost. Intel may be betting on brand confusion to justify the premium.

The 12400 Was Actually Good — And That's Still True

Buried under the rebrand outrage is a quieter thread of users defending the core silicon. Low latency, no E-core drama, solid 1080p gaming — the 12400's reputation holds up. The Core 5 120 inherits all of that, for better or worse.

It makes sense as a lot of system assemblers are still using the 12400f due to price, but with the DDR4 price hike in may and June, it's a system that is hard to sell, and the fact that SI's can use one main board for their production of Intel PCs makes it cheaper for them to stock.

A more charitable and reasonable interpretation is that the writer understands that the casual non enthusiast audience which still buys the majority of desktop PCs will have no idea of that distinction and assume the new naming scheme comes with the new architecture.

Some do. Some of us bust our asses on a new node just to watch it get canned. I have a bit of salt over 20A. Things like this aren't an R&D problem. This is marketing wanting things to look new and shiny, reading them. Just like how Ryzen 200 existing doesn't mean Zen6/7 R&D has stopped at AMD.

This is the stupidest decision I've ever seen by Intel. Why not flog these off as i5 12405 units? They did that with the i3 10105.

Closing the gap in gaming with the 9800X3D isn't something that can be achieved by throwing more P cores at the problem, replacing all the E cores on the 285k with P cores would give you for the most part an identical performance as what holds them back in comparison isn't multi core performance but memory latency and lack of cache to make up for it.

Can Intel pls go back to i3, i5, i7 and i9? I would consider myself tech enthusiast, but I don't know what Intel currently has on market. (I won't buy it.)

What disguise? It's core 5 not core ULTRA 5. We know for a long time that they are not meteor lake or arrow lake. Core are renamed. Core ULTRA are the new ones.

The name change is whatever. The price is the confusing part, because i5-12400F is about $100 on amazon. Do they expect to sell the same CPU (+100 MHz) with a different name for twice the price?

Could have just rebranded it as an core 3 and core 5 could be the 6p+4e ones

So the rumor was real, but people wanted the 12P/0E CPU more than this. That could be a viable drop-in upgrade for those who own a 12900K. As it stands, the C5-120F is just a slightly faster 12400F.

Might as well get the 14400 for $150 then.

Why? if AM4 gets praise by recycling crap chips on a dead and old platform, why does Intel get flak when they do it...

Confirmed H0 (Alder Lake 6P 0E) die, it IS actually on Intel Ark - not on the english one. English for some reason has no Ordering & Compliance tab.

They should have released a high end P-core only CPU yesterday. Kind of wild that they don't even try to compete with AMD's gaming CPUs

As a System builder, I have completely abandoned the 13th and 14th Generation. New Ultra Core is a joke with socket going to expire this year. Intel is in my opinion is not good for anything except 12th Gen and Budget PC.

In fairness, AMD is still pumping out AM4 CPU SKUs, and mobile SKU's names have been obfuscated so the average consumer wouldn't know if they were getting Zen2, 3, or 4. The difference is, AMD is putting out a competitive/leading product, and Intel isn't. Intel needs to make a good desktop chip.

Honestly, 12400 with DDR5 goes hard for gaming. No issues with thread management with windows. Still a great value.

How much will this cost? Any more than $150, I would rather just get a AMD 9600. I think the ideal price would be $120.

I want that rumored 12 pcore, no ecore chip and I want it to be cheap, so I can upgrade my Alder Lake ddr4 enough to wait through 2028.

This is meant as a drop-in upgrade for current LGA1700 owners, specifically those still running an i3-12100F and DDR4. It's a more reasonable option over buying a new mobo and DDR5. It's not really targeted at new builders. But it's still a questionable launch because it's just a 12400F with a new name.

This is literally a rebranded i5-12400F, which has been the best budget Intel CPU for gaming since its launch 4 years ago. It is basically the extension of the Core and Core Ultra branding to desktop space.

Binned/faulty 8-core 5700X3D chips getting sold in Latin America as 6-core 5500X3D for cheap instead of being e-waste sounds a lot better than Intel rebranding a 3 year old SKU then doubling the price.

This doesn't look like Bartlett Lake. Actually, given the specs, including memory support and boost frequency, it's probably another rebrand of the same old ADL 6+0 die we've had for years now.

Intel 10 fabs probably aren't too busy, so this is a cheap way to sell people good chips at a competitive price. Not seeing the problem.

Seems like a terrible value for $216-246 given you can get a 12700k for that price and a 12400f for like $110ish last I checked.

They are pretty capable for the price. And 6c/12t is enough for most people. I dont see anything wrong here except stupid name update and that it is not a Raptor Lake as their own database suggest.

AMD just confirmed a new budget gaming cpu for AM4 so it is definitely not dead either. Both are awesome and I love to see budget options expanding as most people simply don't have access to the newer top end stuff.

They're great for the price. They trade blows with the more expensive ryzen 7500f/7600. Ryzens do better in e-sports while Alder Lake runs better than expected in some CPU intensive games like Stalker 2. Alder Lake has low latency thanks to monolithic die, although the bandwidth isn't as great as AM5 CPUs.

If you're going a new budget build why not just go on AM5 you'll have an upgrade path. There's none for either Intel platforms they're already dead sockets

For a gaming PC, save the $80 and get the i5-12400F. The performance difference in games, especially when paired with a mid-range GPU like an RTX 5060 will be very small. That $80 is much better spent on a better GPU or a better quality power supply/more SSD storage.

The 14400f is generally 50% faster than the 120f. I wouldn't get the 120f personally, it's a budget cpu I would use for an office or home computer not a gaming computer.
