Summary

The Intel Core i7-13700HX is a desktop-grade mobile CPU that punches well above typical laptop chip expectations, effectively matching the 12th gen i9-12900HX in raw performance. Reddit users generally love it for gaming and heavy workloads, especially in Lenovo Legion Pro configurations, but the chip runs hot and hungry — battery life takes a real hit compared to the H-series or AMD alternatives. A shadow was cast by the 13th/14th gen Intel stability controversy, though most users report the mobile HX variant is less affected than desktop counterparts. The chip supports undervolting, which is a meaningful advantage for those willing to tune it. For plugged-in power users who want desktop-class performance in a laptop, it delivers — but efficiency-focused buyers have better options.

Pros

  • Desktop-class performance: effectively matches the i9-12900HX, making it one of the strongest laptop CPUs available in its generation
  • No GPU bottleneck: powerful enough to pair with even an RTX 4090 mobile without CPU-side limitations
  • Undervolting support: users report meaningful thermal and efficiency gains after tuning via BIOS or Lenovo Vantage
  • Thermals in well-cooled laptops: users in Legion Pro 5i report CPU temps of 59–75°C under gaming load, which is competitive for an HX chip
  • Strong sustained multi-core performance: excels in content creation tasks like Blender rendering and video editing where core count matters
  • Broadly available in premium configs: widely paired with RTX 4060/4070 in Lenovo Legion, HP Omen, and Acer Predator laptops at reasonable price points

Cons

  • Power consumption is punishing: users report battery life dropping from ~5 hours to ~2.5 hours compared to H-series chips under similar workloads
  • Runs hot under load: even in balanced mode, temperatures of 95–100°C are common in CPU-intensive games on many laptops
  • 13th gen stability concerns linger: while Intel says mobile HX is unaffected, some users report BSODs and crashes, creating distrust even if the root cause is unclear
  • AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX competes closely: Reddit frequently recommends the AMD alternative for equivalent performance with better power efficiency
  • Undervolting disables Windows virtualization: on some Legion models, enabling undervolt in BIOS breaks Hyper-V/WSL2, a real drawback for developers
  • Architecture ambiguity: debate persists on Reddit about whether the chip is a true Raptor Lake core or an Alder Lake rebadge, which affects long-term driver and optimization expectations

Real Users on 13th Gen Stability: Panic or Legitimate Concern?

Reddit threads are split — some Legion Pro owners report zero crashes after a year of heavy use, while others have sent units in for warranty repairs with BSODs during gaming. Intel officially cleared laptop CPUs, but community trust took a hit.

The i7-13700HX vs Ryzen 7 7745HX Debate Won't Die

In head-to-head threads, AMD gets the nod from most Reddit users for daily use thanks to better power efficiency, even though Intel edges out raw performance. The consensus: unless you're always plugged in, the power tax isn't worth it.

Undervolting: The Feature That Changes the Whole Experience

A surprising number of users highlight undervolting as near-essential for the i7-13700HX — taming temps and extending battery life significantly. Unlike most H-series chips, this HX variant still supports it, which owners call a genuine advantage.

i7-13700HX is truly new and matches i9-12900HX. It is effectively a desktop-grade CPU which will not be bottlenecked even by RTX 4090. As a bonus, you can undervolt it.

Get the AMD version. I'm using it atm and very pleased. The Intel chip is a power hog.

75 c is an insanely good temperature for the cpu under load, very very nice. they're gonna push out a new bios update mid august which supposedly will fix the issues regarding laptop cpus. I just got my laptop last week and so far everything has been great.

The tiny performance increase from Intel isn't worth paying the extra 100, just get AMD.

I have a laptop with the 13900hx variation and it lasts more than 5 hours on battery. I don't know why you guys think that intel products don't correlate with good battery longevity.

Plus the battery life. I guess only the new Intel Ultra chips that come close to AMD. Even then I would choose AMD. But these old fabs are literally a power hog.

It really depends on how good you want your pc to be, the 4070 is better (20-30% depending on the game) and the i9 is certainly a beast that you probably will not ever use it 100% BUT it will give you a long lasting pc that can handle multitasking (and if you ever render something, it will be noticeable). The i7 + 4060 is a good 1080 combo, the i9 4070 it's better.

I have a Legion 7i with the 13900HX, and it just recently started freezing and BSOD while playing games. It's not reliable and only seems to happen at odd times so I'm not certain that it's the CPU at fault.

Rather ask which one is sufficient for you, for 99.99% people even 13700H is overkill processor. 13700HX is obviously much better than 13700H.

The problem is high frequency = high voltage on light - medium load. 13700hx max boost is only 5.0 ghz, this is much lower than 13700k 5.4, this is even lower than 13600k. But it probably still needs more caution if it's a 14900hx because that thing boosts to 5.8.

The intel is the more powerful CPU BUT it has so many drawbacks that the Ryzen is just better.

Your CPU is based on 12th gen CPU, so don't worry.

Laptops are mostly safe from this, they use slightly different dies that don't have the problem... According to Intel.

The i9 is overkill. But the 4070 is worth it.

My AMD Ryzen 7 Legion lasts maybe 3 hours and that's with battery saver on, brightness <50%, 60HZ, and just web browsing. Gaming, it died in less than 80 mins. So the whole battery life bonus with AMD seems negligible in a gaming laptop.

Depends on the laptop specs and price difference. 13700HX can be undervolted and is the more powerful CPU by a fair bit.

Get the HX. It's worth the money. The HX indicate the CPU is a Raptor Lake.

I have had the same 16irx8 since July of last year. It has been a great laptop. My model has the 4060, not the 4070. I recommend upgrading the warranty just in case.

I've tried both in similar laptops. I can say the HX is a lot more powerful (feels like 50%) but also way less efficient (also probably 50%). Even on web browsing the laptop gets hot and battery life is short. I'd say battery life for my workloads went from 5h to 2.5h. If you are plugged in most of the time the HX is worth it though.

Well, a lot of issues with 13th gen only started materializing after a year or two of use. It takes time to degrade the CPU to the point of instability.

Bottleneck is a word that gets overused. Don't overthink it, just get and enjoy your new laptop. Besides on a laptop the heat is number one problem.

I am facing BSOD once or twice a month. My laptop is Legion Pro 5i. I have intel i7-13700HX with 32 GB RAM and RTX 4060 8GB. My overall laptop experience is perfect except sometimes BSOD but since it is a fast system, rebooting always solves the problem. Temperature while doing productive tasks stays around 41-49°C. While playing games like CSGO normal settings temp is around 59-62°C.

The CPU can get pretty hot, played a quick match of Fortnite just now to check, and it got to 100°C in balanced mode. I remember back when I first got the laptop, I tried the performance mode and it topped out at 105°C, which is apparently fine, but I wasn't really comfortable with it, so I had to dial it back.

I've had crashes with this same model (RTX 4060 i7 13700HX) ever since I got it. My CPU temps are much higher 80-90C when gaming. Sent it to warranty a few days ago. Still not sure what the issue is but I've heard people having to get mobo replacements.

I also get the same temps on my Acer Predator Neo 16. It hovers around 55-73°C while gaming. However I'm worried about the CPU failing because of this Intel bullshit. I have a i7-13700HX with 4060. No issues so far, Thank God!

The Acer Predator Helios 16 is an incredible laptop with superb build quality. We've got the Helios 16 with i7-13700hx and Rtx 4070, and it's insanely fast. The Rtx 4060 model is also gonna have the unlocked 140 watts like ours so you'll get the full Rtx 4060 mobile performance without limitations.

For those types of games the i7 will be plenty in most cases. Very long term the i9 should meet requirements longer than the i7, but whether those extra frames matter at all to you depends on your preferences. Most probably wouldn't notice.

I have i9-14900HX and it does goes super hot to the point it's concerning for me (100C with a compressed cooler) but I did found a way to counter this by disabling the processor performance boost, this simple change totally helped to cool down the CPU (71C on gaming) with the price of my i9 running on its base clock speed.

I have frequent crashes on that same laptop, especially when gaming. Notably Baldur's Gate 3 and Marvel Rivals, even on modest settings. It'll hang then hard crash to desktop. I've also crashed on Blender, WoW, and FF14.

Locked out voltages are a big NO at that price and tier. I like mine don't get me wrong, but from all of it, screen is the best it offers, thermals are a disaster, literally thermal throttles at every load.

I am posting here so that maybe someone finds and can help me with the solution. Seems like a waste of $1200, maybe I'll post it for sale. Just seems like a waste since I've only used it a handful of times and is a great laptop.

I would still avoid buying 13th and 14th gen HX mobile CPU laptops. The mobile HX CPU dies are based off of the desktop dies, so any manufacturing defect in the desktop CPU might also affect mobile CPU. There's already evidence from laptop users that their CPU voltage is exceeding 1.6 volts.
