Summary

The E-TWOW GT 2020 is a niche ultra-portable electric scooter with a loyal following among commuters who prioritize weight and packability above all else. At around 27-29 lbs with a 700W motor, it punches well above its class for acceleration and braking — the addition of a Tektro drum brake in the 2020 model addressed one of the biggest complaints about earlier versions. Sentiment is generally positive among owners, but the scooter courts controversy around its speed limiter situation in Europe, its solid tires on wet surfaces, and whether its high price is justified for a small-wheeled commuter. It works best for lighter riders on dry, smooth surfaces doing short-to-medium commutes, and falls short for heavier users or anyone expecting consistent 40+ km/h performance.

Pros

  • Exceptional power-to-weight ratio: 700W motor in a ~27-29 lb package delivers acceleration that owners describe as night-and-day over budget competitors like the GoTrax XR Ultra
  • Improved braking in the 2020 model — Tektro drum brake + regenerative + friction brake gives a triple-layer system with ~30ft stopping distance from full speed, a major upgrade over prior generations
  • Real-world range of 16-23 miles depending on rider weight, with GPS-verified reports from owners at 175 lbs hitting 20+ miles regularly
  • Nearly zero maintenance required — solid tires mean no flats, and long-term owners report hundreds of miles with no mechanical issues or tightening needed
  • Compact folded form factor with carry handle makes it genuinely portable for last-mile transit use — fits under train seats
  • Layered speed modes (L1–L5) allow easy speed adjustment for loaning to others or riding in mixed environments

Cons

  • Speed limiter controversy: units sold in Germany, France, and Spain are hardware-locked to 25 km/h max (L3), requiring a board modification (removing a photodiode) to unlock L4 — which voids the warranty
  • Top speed claims don't hold up for heavier riders: users over 85-90 kg report hitting only 33-34 km/h instead of the advertised 40+ km/h, and performance drops further on lower battery
  • Solid tires are a genuine safety hazard in wet conditions — front-wheel-drive combined with 8-inch solid rubber on slick surfaces has been called a 'death trap in rain' by at least one owner, and the scooter has no IPX certification
  • Jerky throttle response at low speeds is a recurring complaint — the power curve jumps sharply from zero rather than ramping smoothly, making slow riding uncomfortable
  • Replacement tires are difficult to source internationally — the 200x45 solid tire spec is non-standard, and riders in Eastern Europe report struggling to find replacements even on AliExpress
  • Price sits around $900-1,100 USD, which is a hard sell when larger, heavier scooters offer more consistent top speed and better wet-weather handling at similar price points

The Speed Limiter Drama No One Warned You About

Buyers in several European countries received units locked to 25 km/h with no user-accessible way to change it. The fix — removing a photodiode from the controller board — is easy but voids the warranty, and some owners report only unlocking L4 instead of the full L5 regardless.

Best-in-Class Portability Has a Price

At this weight and size, the GT 2020 has no real competition for commuters who need to take their scooter onto public transit. But that portability comes with 8-inch solid tires that become a liability in rain and a power delivery that favors lighter riders on dry pavement.

Long-Term Owners Are Surprisingly Happy

Unlike many scooters that generate buyer's remorse threads, the GT 2020 has a quiet base of satisfied long-term owners. Multiple users report zero maintenance over hundreds of miles and still recommend it as a best-in-class ultra-portable, even with its quirks.

Right behind the front wheel, there is a black cap attached to the deck of the scooter. You'll need to seal it all around because water tends to leak in there. Pull the cover off, apply silicone, then reattach. It's not going to make your scooter waterproof, but it'll be fine in light rain. I've ridden mine in light rain plenty of times, but my trips are also short (3-4 miles).

Now I also removed the diode that limits the speed. It was really super easy! Remove four screws and case. Find the diode and wiggle it until it falls off. Put the case back with the screws. Then start the scooter entering the L menu and now the L4 is selectable. A quick test on L4 gave me 37 km/h with battery on 50% and my 85 kg weight. Fantastic!

This pretty much fixes the only two real issues on this scooter, making it a nice choice for someone who wants good speed AND light weight. I used to own an earlier generation E-Twow scooter, and during the two years I owned it I never had to spend even a minute doing maintenance. The build quality on E-Twow scooters tends to be very good. They've been in this game for a long time and they make a solid product.

That's a hard kick in the nuts for anyone who bought it in the countries affected... This thing just lost one of its key selling points unless you're willing to modify the board which no doubt voids the warranty. It's kind of disgusting they still advertise it as a 40kmh scooter on their site too.

I'm also in the UK. Mine arrived yesterday from the supplier ICE in Spain and it is indeed limited to L3. I'm tempted to take a look at chip to see if it is there to be unsoldered. However, don't get too down, even on L3 it is a lot quicker than I expected, I don't think I am going to be going faster than 25kph at the moment anyway, seems to be my feel safe limit on my short rides so far!

I don't get it - 20+mph seems like plenty of speed for any commuter style scooter. It only weighs like 25lbs?

I get 20+ miles on my GT2020. I weigh 175 lbs. Top speed of 25mph only when fully charged. Then it drops to 24mph. The rear brake is great but I rarely use it. Regenerative break is the best in the industry (patented). Excellent build quality and feels really quick for its size! Nothing comes close to this scooter.

I followed this guy's guide, really easy to take the case off and I wiggled off the speed restriction transistor, restarted holding the brake button and I could change to L4, a quick test got me to 41kph! Lucky days!!

Received my GT 2020 today. It came with the speed limit, and only L1-L3. First thing I did was to cut off the photodiode like in the video above. It took just a couple of minutes, and was really easy to do. To my surprise, it only unlocked the L4 and not L5. But luckily, L4 is restricted to 40km/h so no problem.

I've ridden in the rain about a dozen times from light to heavy. I do not advise it but the GT is pretty damn sealed up.

I've had mine apart troubleshooting. It's pretty well waterproofed as it comes. There's conformal coating on the lower electronics, but not the board on top the tiller. The danger is the tires!

One of the strong points of this line (besides weight) is they require virtually no maintenance. I put 500 miles on my Zoom Stryder Ex and never so much as had to tighten a screw.

I have the older version of this, the Booster V, which has a 500W motor and goes up to 19mph and I love it. The one thing I would want is more power for steeper hills and speed and this sounds like the package. Not sure why this scooter doesn't get more attention around here!

Most tests are done with 165lbs bodyweight to get 28mph/45km/h, but I feel like especially on this type of small scooter, the top speed will go down exponentially as you reach the max rated weight.

I've not had the Ninebot but I do know what you mean about the jerky acceleration. It does not like riding slow if you've not limited the speed. They really need to do something about that curve - like it shoots from nothing to 30% then ramping 30-100 rather than say, 5-100 like many other scoots.

Just received mine, but am a bit disappointed with it. It feels really weak compared to my Ninebot G30D Max when going up hill.. The G30D has a 350W motor and weighs 21kg, so I was expecting this 700W motor 11kg scooter to be a lot quicker up hill? Secondly, it is quite 'jerky' when it comes to accelerating and letting go of the stick. Almost to the point that it is uncomfortable.

If you can get to L5 mode, my scooter tops out at 43 kmh at a full charge to about 80% battery. It was auto-set to L5. In the US, we don't have the option to change the L setting. I wish I could so I could loan it out to people on a slower setting.

E-TWOWs are nice, they are the first real practical electrical scooter in my opinion. They had some issues with design in the beginning, but overall they've fixed all weaknesses in design. Current E-TWOWs kinda scare me at 47 km/h on 8 inch wheels though — E-TWOW top stable speed is about 35 km/h.

This model does get recommended frequently and it seems like most owners are happy here. But I think they have engineered a scooter that can go faster than what is considered to be reasonably safe, given the tiny eight inch solid rubber tires. As long as you don't push it to the limit you should be fine, but for many people they are potentially setting themselves up for a bad accident if they don't understand the limitations of small rubber tires riding over slick surfaces at high speeds.

I had one and it was a death trap in the rain. Solid tires and front wheel drive is the issue.

I just bought this!! I spoke to a UScooter rep and confirmed it is the TWOW 2020 GT rebranded and it has the rear drum brake. Now I need to figure out what protective gear to get.

This is a great first scooter, IMO. Or a second or third scooter for that matter.

Mine is 2020 GT SE model and the selectable limits are: L1 = 6 kmh, L2 = 20 kmh, L3 = 25 kmh, L4 = no speed limit, and that equals to 34 kmh for me. What puzzles me is that this model is said to reach 40 kmh so I wonder if the slow speed is due to my 90kg weight or lower air temperature or other reason. Agreed that anything past 30 kmh is not very safe on this scooter.

Weight, load, and road conditions are variables for top speed. Etwow scooters are meant for portability over anything else. 48v with a tiny 8ah battery means voltage sag limits the top speed. If you want consistent top speed and quicker acceleration get a larger scooter with dual motors and a minimum of 48v 15ah battery.

Make sure your speed limiter is set correctly. I have this year's model and it accelerates strong through at 28kph but I haven't pushed beyond that - the short handlebars and small hard wheels make it extremely uncomfortable at high speeds.

I have the same scooter and I rode mine for about another 1000 miles beyond when the tires looked worn with zero issues.

I am still searching for tires but there are too many measurements, and can't figure out which ones are compatible. Apparently, the front wheel is different than the rear one.

Would you say the scooter is worth 900 (820ish after discount?) on its own? I feel like two vehicles for a grand and a bit makes sense, one (probably best in class) for 80% of that price is a much tougher sell.

In my country they're illegal to ride because they're over 500W. Surely the GT is probably the best for that weight class.

I did everything as described to remove the speed limiter, mine also still doesn't have L5, but the speed also hasn't increased, it tops out at 30-33 km/h as before, my weight is also pretty much same as yours, do you have any tips/ideas for what could be wrong?

You purchase a scooter for keeping in your trunk or recreational uses — they do testing on smaller riders around 140 lbs. You have to spend more money to get a decent scooter with range and power if you're heavier.

I find the L-menu very useful when others are using the scooter, at full speed it's kind of a beast. Strange that US scooters do not have it.

The inability to fit an air filled front tire is the only thing keeping me from buying this scooter.
