Summary

The E-TWOW GT SE is a well-regarded ultraportable electric scooter that has built a loyal following among urban commuters, particularly in dense cities like NYC. Reddit sentiment is predominantly positive, with owners praising its combination of light weight (~29 lbs), solid 700W motor performance, and flat-tire-free solid rubber tires. It's consistently described as the king of the ultraportable segment for riders who need to fold and carry their scooter on transit. The main trade-off is ride comfort — the small solid tires transmit road vibrations directly, which divides opinion depending on what riders are coming from.

Pros

  • Exceptional portability at ~29 lbs — owners routinely carry it over one shoulder into stores, on subways, and on Amtrak without issue
  • 700W motor delivers real-world speeds of 24–25 mph on smooth asphalt, with strong hill-climbing ability that surprises new owners
  • Solid tires eliminate flats entirely — multiple owners report thousands of miles with zero tire-related incidents; one user hit 5,000 km before first tire swap
  • Suspension + solid tire combo outperforms pneumatic-only setups like the GoTrax according to owners who tested both directly
  • Battery maintains charge well in storage with no BMS self-discharge issues, and doesn't lose power as battery depletes during a ride
  • Ewheels customer support praised repeatedly across multiple threads as top-notch, with fast shipping and responsive service

Cons

  • Small solid rubber tires transmit significant vibration on cracked or rough roads — users upgrading from 10" pneumatic scooters consistently report the ride feels rougher
  • Handlebar height is shorter than average, making it uncomfortable for riders over 6'2" without modification
  • Grip in wet conditions is genuinely poor — multiple owners warn about sliding even at low speeds on wet pavement; not recommended in rain
  • Controller differences between SE and Sport models created ongoing confusion and real safety issues (delayed brakes, abrupt acceleration) before the 2024 controller revision
  • At ~$800–$1,000, some critics argue value has eroded — competitors now offer pneumatic tires, more features, and similar weight at comparable prices
  • Top speed limited by safety concerns on small solid tires; one moderator noted emergency braking tests 'went poorly' and advised riding defensively below max speed

How Does It Handle NYC Streets After 5,000 km?

Multiple long-term owners across Reddit report the GT SE holds up remarkably well over years of daily use — one user still riding strong after 5,000 km, another after 2,000+ miles in Philadelphia. The folding mechanism and motor are consistently praised for durability, though tires need replacing after heavy use.

The Ultraportable Throne Is Being Challenged

Reddit users who've owned the GT SE for years still defend it in its niche, but newer voices are pointing to competitors with larger pneumatic tires and more features at similar prices. The GT SE's value proposition holds strongest for riders who genuinely need to carry the scooter — for pure riding performance, the gap has narrowed.

Solid Tires Are a Dealbreaker for Some, a Feature for Others

The most divisive aspect of the GT SE isn't speed or range — it's the solid tires. Riders coming from pneumatic setups often find the vibration intolerable on rough roads, while owners in flat urban environments with smooth pavement call it the best trade-off they've made. Your city's road quality may determine whether you love or hate this scooter.

It was fun as hell. I got comfortable in the 15-18 mph range first but by the end was zipping around at 22-24. I feel like the speed was generally maxing out around 24.8ish. According to the odometer I did 24.8 miles. I mainly was doing laps around a park and local roads.

I have a GT Sport and cheap GoTrax Ultra. The Sport is obviously miles better. I love the speed, ultra portability, suspension, and no risk of a flat. It definitely helps over bigger bumps, no doubt. I'll even just come off curbs going 15-20mph with no problems. I will say the pneumatic tires on the GoTrax are definitely better over the smaller bumps/cracks. To me, it's a very big and surprising difference.

If you find riding the max rough which has 10 inch air filled tires you will find the 8 inch solid tire way more rough. Take this from someone who went from 8 inch solid tires to 10 inch pneumatic.

I received it from Uscooters about 12 days ago, and have already put on just over 100 miles. I'm 200 lbs. and 6'1" and a senior(ish) citizen (65) to boot. I've been riding a regular non-powered kick scooter for years and the GT Sport's solid tires compared well to what I was used to.

A couple years late but I got my etwow GT in 2022 and it's still my daily driver 5000km later. Best scooter I've used.

The etwow is light. Its 29 lbs and now that i have the handle strap it feels easier to carry around. The latch and folding mechanism is so easy and seamless. It also feels very beefy and secure when locked before riding. I've ridden 23 mph top speed and the longest ive traveled on one charge so far was around 12 miles. I had 40% left and that was a mix between top speed and like 17 mph. Its very zippy.

There is a honecomb type tire that is a better replacement for front. The stock tire is not particularly stable and slippery in anything less then dry conditions. Its a little bit wider but its the same diameter. It does slightly rub the edge of the fender but that was fixed after the first ride. I have two of these scooters, so I compared the stock and hybrid tires performance and couldn't see a difference.

Get the SE. The only thing that really changes is how the controller is programmed. SE is safer and accel is smoother. Sport has slightly higher top speed/quicker accel but weaker brakes. I bought the sport and hated it so had the factory in China modify an SE controller to be used with the sport battery.

I have both the Booster V and GT (no physical brake), and both are just plug in and ride, literally nothing else. Unlike my fancy Dualtron, flat tires, change brakes, flush hydraulic fluid, tighten loose screws -- that blistering performance requires maintenance.

In my experience, solid tires are a rough ride even with suspension. IMO, go for whichever option offers air filled tires and the largest tire size, larger diameter tires handle better and are more comfortable.

The Ninebot Max is about as comfortable as a scooter without a suspension is going to be. The way to make a scooter more comfortable is to add a suspension, but that adds weight. So trying to fit it all into a 40 pound frame is not realistic. The E-TWOW is a great scooter for what it is but if you already think the Ninebot Max is uncomfortable I don't see how switching to an E-TWOW is going to solve your problem.

So I have 10 inch tires on the Turboant X7 Pro and live in NYC. After a number of flats I switched out the back tire to solid. Honestly, I'd take the shocks solid little tires on GT sport over the big airfilled tires on the Turboant. That said, maybe I'll eat it on a pothole and change my tune, but thus far the ride is very smooth for me. For me at least, I honestly believe it's the perfect scooter.

I have the same scooter and agree with everything you say. I like the solid tires if only because it's simpler not having to worry about flats or tire pressure. I also haven't really experienced much tire slippage (only if you slam on the brakes) but I also don't ride if it's wet out at all. I think it's a remarkably practical scooter for a city like nyc. It's so small nobody minds if you bring it places.

New GT Sport owner following up here. My background: I'm an avid cyclist and even race in cyclocross. I've commuted on a folding bike for about 9 years and 14,000 biking miles. I'd never ridden an electric scooter in my life when I researched and then bought this GT Sport.

Not my first ride, but it is my first purchase. Previously it was every and any scooter rental you can think of. I went crazy and tried them all, rode them all over town. Many used pneumatic tires, some solid rubber. To me the difference is in two different categories - shock absorption, and ride quality. The air filled tires have much better ride quality. There wont be much vibration even on course asphalt. With solid rubber tires, the vibrations translate easily into the handle bars.

Lower gear will save you ton of battery on inclines. If on L5, keep speed from going over 17mph on long hill, any faster and you will hear the motor peak and whine. Slower speeds will climb bigger hills easier. Full throttle does not give as much constant power as half throttle on steep inclines. Sounds weird, but I ride a lot of hills and that's what I discovered though countless trips.

I've had one of these for a couple of years and I love it! I will say that in wet conditions the solid tyres don't feel as grippy as pneumatics might. The sprung footboard does a reasonable job of cushioning rough surfaces and smaller pot-holes. The 800kW motor means hills are not much of a problem ever. Also as the battery depletes this scooter doesn't lose power.

I havn't tried a ninebot max; the only scooters I've owned are the GT booster V, GT Sport, and gotrax apex. the apex had pneumatic wheels but no suspension. both GT scooters had solid tires and front+back suspension. GT scooters were both smoother than the just pneumatic tires gotrax. also much lighter and faster and compact.

The handle bars are narrow for a scooter, it's true - but for me it really isn't a problem. I did wish they were a little wider at first, but I got used to it after a day or two. I do think it contributes to its agility. Wobblyness feels no more or less than any other scooter I've ridden.

A lot of the deterioration for sitting in a warehouse will depend on what charge level it sat at. One good thing about the GT's is they don't APPEAR to have any self discharge on the BMS nor electronics. I have some scooters that will obliterate their battery in a week - forcing me to manually keep them on a charger on and off just to not get the battery to dangerously damaging levels.

Im 99.9% sure you will get the newest controller ordering from Etwow, which will not have battery issues. They phased those out pretty quickly by 2024. I wouldn't really worry ordering from Ewheels either, samsung batteries hold up very well. Max voltage should be between 54-55.

I have this scooter too, and I agreed with your observations. Rode on it in nyc for about 2 years. My biggest complaint is that the wheels are solid and too small. I hope the next version of this will be bigger tubeless tires.

You aren't going to find any scooter under 30lbs that is comparable in specs at the same price.

I just picked up the gt se yesterday from some guy on OfferUp. Brand new for 350. I keep it in my locker downtown Chicago and it's a great super portable scooter.

I'm thinking of getting one of these too! Have you tried taking it on the subway? I've done so with the 40 lb Ninebot Max and it is as uncomfortable as it is an inconvenience.

I've been debating between this and the KQi3 Max -- the reason I'd be looking at the latter is because I'm 6'2 and it's a larger frame, and I've heard it's very stable and has solid lights. I really love the sound of the GT Sport, but do you feel like there's problems in those areas?

I can say that it's unstable in wet conditions. I have ridden it in monsoons basically, but VERY carefully. GT Sport is an ultraportable. I hang it off my shoulder when I go into a store and just carry it around with me. It also has a TON of zip. KQi3 is slower, but also weighs 46 pounds. For me, it's no decision, GT Sport is WAYYYY better.

Thanks for the review! I also have the 2020 City and this week it died on the Queensboro Bridge about a mile into my ride so now I feel like I can't trust it anymore, and I've been considering the 2022 gt sport. The SE is a different model but largely the same right?

I'm also still loving mine 5000km later. I've swapped tires twice now because I'm lucky enough to life a block away from a great scooter tech, I just need to source the tires. The grip and maneuver action with a fresh set is like a dream. My favourite scooter of the three I've had (kingsong ksn8 and kingsong max).

Best part about the solid tires is you can not give a care and ride over everything. Worst part about solid tires is you feel every single indentation in the road. The thumb throttle gets old too.

This scooter is fun as fuck and downright dangerous because of how fun it is to go top speed. I bought it for a college campus and shit, I kept locking up the rear because I was used to a scooter that had both brakes activated by the left lever so I kept reaching there and losing some seconds of braking and having to hard brake. Fishtailed too, but kept it under control.

Don't sleep on the availability of spare parts. Uscooters still one of the best in the game on that front.

Note that those ETWOW scooters are known to be unsafe at maximum speed due to the small solid tires having terrible grip and poor braking. I wouldn't go at full speed if I were you even if you did manage to get the scooter to go 40kmh.

I got mine up to 36.8 kph indicated on the scooter, on L5; before I quit. It was 92% SoC - and it was still pulling. No idea what model I have, to be honest - grabbed it at a trade show when they were closing the show floor.

For San Francisco, I would look for dual motor scooters. I don't think either of these two are a great option if you need to climb the hills there.

Other reviewers state handlebars are wobbly and spaced too closely together. Is this bearable? For the same money im considering this or the fluid horizon.

That scooter is maybe worth $500 nowadays. 700w motor, 504Wh battery, dinky suspension, SOLID tires (solid tires are AWFUL), and lack of features (doesn't even have turn blinkers). Kukirin G2 Master blows it out of the water if you want raw speed/performance, if you want a general all arounder the ninebot Max G2 is extremely reliable and blows the acceleration/hill climbing performance.
