Summary

The Apollo Ghost 2022 is a dual-motor electric scooter built on the well-known VDM-10 platform, and Reddit sentiment is decidedly mixed. Riders who put serious mileage on it — some reporting 2,500km to 4,000km — often praise the ride quality and dual-motor punch, while others run into hardware failures within the first few months. The upgrade from 800W to 1000W motors and the redesigned folding stem are the headline improvements over previous versions, but the decision to skip a battery upgrade remains the most common complaint. It tends to appeal to urban commuters who want real dual-motor performance without jumping to a heavier, pricier class of scooter — but long-term reliability is a genuine concern that shows up repeatedly across subreddits.

Pros

  • Dual 1000W motors deliver genuinely fast acceleration — multiple riders describe hitting close to 60 km/h in gear 3 turbo mode, with one user calling it 'like a rocket ship' after properly configuring the eco/turbo settings
  • Weighs around 29–30 kg, which is notably lighter than competitors like the Phantom, making it more portable and practical for riders who need to carry or store it
  • The redesigned 2022 folding stem eliminates the stem wobble that plagued earlier versions — users directly compare it to the well-regarded Vsett 10+ locking mechanism
  • Real-world range of 20–25 km at full throttle, with more conservative riders reporting 50 km+ at moderate speeds — enough for most urban commutes
  • Strong third-party parts availability due to the shared VDM-10 platform, meaning replacement components (batteries, rims, controllers) can be sourced from multiple suppliers, not just Apollo
  • Apollo customer support replaced broken rims under warranty for at least one user and responded promptly to reports of missing accessories, suggesting post-sale service has improved

Cons

  • Split rims have cracked on multiple units within the first month of normal pavement riding — one user reported rim failure at just 303 miles on bike lanes and sidewalks only, despite Apollo marketing them as '50% thicker'
  • Battery is the same 52V 18Ah pack carried over from previous models, and after 2–3 years of use some owners report capacity degradation severe enough to limit speed to 25 km/h and range to under 5 km — with Apollo quoting over $1,000 CAD for a replacement
  • Front fender is widely criticized as functionally useless, offering almost no protection for the suspension from dirt and dust — a known issue Apollo did not address in the 2022 refresh
  • Apollo-branded accessories have a poor reputation: the clip-on light broke during a normal ride, the included bag is not waterproof, and the stock tools are considered low quality by most owners
  • Motor and controller failures have been reported at low mileage — one hydraulic model suffered rear motor failure at 72 km and a complete wiring harness failure at 205 km
  • Competing options like the Titan-sourced VDM-10 (the same underlying scooter) are available in Europe with larger battery options and at lower prices, and the Phantom v2 offers bigger motors, better display, and turn signals for buyers who can handle the extra weight

Configuring It Correctly Makes a Huge Difference

A surprising number of Ghost owners ride it locked in eco mode or single-motor mode without knowing it — leading to complaints about slow speeds that disappear once the turbo and dual-motor buttons are properly set. The manual doesn't explain this well, and the buttons give almost no tactile feedback.

Apollo Is a Reseller, Not a Manufacturer — and Reddit Knows It

Multiple experienced users point out that the Ghost is a rebadged VDM-10 from Titan, and that Apollo's main value-add is marketing and North American distribution. This isn't necessarily bad, but it explains why the scooter can be found with larger batteries and at lower prices through other channels.

Three Years In, Battery Replacement Costs More Than Some Rivals' MSRPs

Long-term owners are discovering that battery degradation after heavy use leaves the scooter nearly unusable, and Apollo's quoted replacement cost of over $1,000 CAD is a shock — especially for a scooter that originally sold for $2,500. Third-party cells for the same 52V 18Ah pack run closer to $500 USD.

This is why split rims are bad. Sure easier to change the tire, but for the amount of pinched inner tubes to structural integrity not handling the weight of unit/driver. They are just not a good design. Tubeless tires or nothing for me.

My rims broke in less than 1 month, 303 miles, only rode on side walks and bike lanes. The rims broke and cut through the side of my tire and now my rear tire is flat, my rims are broken and i can't ride my ghost anymore.

The new folding mechanism looks kind of interesting. And it looks like they finally decided to stop gimping the motors in order to not compete with the Apollo phantom. That always made it hard to recommend. The mechanical disc brakes are still infuriating and should not be allowed on scooters that go that fast.

Had this scooter since 2022, 3 years later the battery holds no juice anymore and doesn't allow me to utilize the turbo boost feature or other gears without immediately dying, except the first gear. Just last year i was cruising at 45-50km everywhere, now i can't get passed 25km per hour and 5km max before it completely turns off on me from a full charge. I've already invested over 1000 dollars into repairs for this scooter, now apollo isn't helping out and the scooter is garbage now mostly.

They're trying, I had a couple minor issues (missing my spare tubes and the bell hardware) and their support email was prompt and friendly, got them in the mail right away.

The Ghost is better built with more parts available, the Phantom has more range. The Ghost accelerates faster according to ESG tests.

I'm afraid I'm in this same situation. My Phantom will only charge to 75% then shut off on me after a short ride.

The Ghost has one of the most used powertrains in the industry. The 18ah 52v batteries can be bought for much less than $1000usd. A replacement for one of mine was $500usd, from the company I bought it from.

The first thing I'd check is battery voltage. Does the display light up? If so what is the voltage? If not you're going to have to open the deck, which is not too hard. You will also need a multimeter to read voltage.

I have over 2500km on it and so far it has been good. It's a stable smooth ride, even without a steering damper due to the improved steering geometry and lower deck height, and I had no loose screws or other issues with it.

4000km, I jump curbs with it, 18ah version with hydraulic brake, it's great and gave me no problems. Maybe 25km max distance if you have the throttle pinned in gear 3. I've had my friend get around 50km on it and still have 40% left going 20-30kmh on it too. Excellent scooter.

Split rims are amazing. I don't think this is a consequence of riding with split rims, but moreso the conditions the scooter was ridden in and metal quality. High vibrations will lead to metal fatigue which is true with all cast steel scooters.

Could you be a little more specific than 'ran into some issues when trying to take it apart'? Perhaps some pictures or video would be helpful.

I am surprised Apollo did not ask Titan to make better fenders for the Ghost with the 2022 update. The front one is completely useless and both don't protect the suspension from dust and dirt. Even doing something as simple as $15 mudguards would be better than nothing, and the end rider would not have to bother DIY-ing it themselves.

I rode my 2020 version in a downpour in Chicago for about 30 minutes and there was some condensation in the display for the throttle. It dried out in a day or so. The 2022 has a better folding system and regenerative braking system (I think). I would love to sell mine and buy the newer version but can't afford it … yet.

It's good when it works, but I've had multiple major failures on my 22' hydraulic model. It's going back to Apollo this week. Rear motor failure @72km and now a wiring harness failure (scoot doesn't power on) at 205km.

With the Phantom, you get bigger motors, bigger battery, better display, turn signals, and if you prefer, a thumb throttle. If good dual-motors performance is all you want, the Ghost certainly has it already.

Don't forget the weight factor the Ghost is a 66 lb scooter which makes it way more portable than a Phantom.

Apollo is garbage. They spend all their money in marketing their garbage products to be top notch.

That looks pretty much exactly the same as the old one. Not sure how it is supposed to be reinforced when this pretty much is evidence that says otherwise. You also might wanna get started on the tire change while waiting for warranty to cover your parts. The brake rotor is probably a bitch and a half to get loose and you might strip the screws which will require additional tools and such afterwards. I stripped 5 out of 6 and still gotta wait til next week to get it fixed...

Stem looks great, motor and speed are not gonna be noticeable the Ghost can usually already hit 37 on a full charge. Should have upped the battery to at least 21ah.

Sounds like a throttle or controller issue for sure - have you checked if the throttle cable got disconnected when you were taking it apart? That's usually the first thing that goes wrong when people start poking around in there.

Going max throttle as much as possible, you'll get about 20-25km. It's not perfect, but I don't need more than that. If I NEED to go far, I can go slower and get more than double that. While I wish mode 3 goes faster than 60kmh, it's plenty fast for most cases. I've owned it for about half a year, and I'm still not tired of it.

I'm currently having the same dilemma between the Ghost 2022 and the Phantom v2. Did you ever decide on one?

I find mine is pretty easy to tell eco vs turbo modes while riding - oddly eco mode has a more aggressive acceleration than turbo on my Ghost. Of course, there is the clipped top speed on eco as well...

They upgraded the motors but they're keeping the same 52v 18ah battery? I think I rather have the 800w motors with a battery upgrade if I had to pick one or the other to be honest.

I just hit 160km on my new Ghost. Received it last Monday, a nice upgrade on my Ninebot G30. The light that Apollo offers is a complete piece of shit, it broke itself while I was riding on regular Calgary side street... just fell off.

Really surprised that they claim the motors have 50% thicker rims and already someone posted in the subreddit about a broken rim on their 2022 model.

I would stick with the 2021 with hydraulic brakes which i have and is still super fun. Never had stem wobble and i can hit super close to 40 mph. It is a great first scooter. The speed got me and bought a thunder 2.. now that's fun.

Yeah, I purchased the 2021 on June 13 and a couple of days later they release the 2022 and I haven't even received it! My scooter lost value before delivery. This is crappy customer satisfaction — I own an online shop and it is important to let people know about new releases/upgrades and give them a choice to wait.

Removed key start and still no regen breaking? This new model is pretty much a downgrade from my interests.

You need to make sure that you are in mode three on the LCD display. Also, there are buttons labeled eco/turbo and single/dual. If you are in eco mode, you will be limited to around 27 km/h no matter the p setting. The yellow left button should be clicked out so it is higher than the red button on the right.

They are a reseller, that's their thing. Other than the Phantom, all they have ever done is buy stuff from AliBaba and whip up bogus marketing blurbs to make it seem like they themselves actually made something.

I'm going to buy the scooter, and I don't know which model to get — the old or new one. Is it going to be a good scooter with more watts and the same battery? Or will the range and battery life wear out quicker? Is it going to be more upgradable in the future?

I would get the new 2022 model, as the stem and locking mechanism looks a lot better and a lot easier to operate if you need to fold the scooter frequently. You can always upgrade the brakes down the line. As for the increase from 800w to 1000w, it should not make a big difference, as the base model VDM-10 always had 1000w motors — the 800w was a special request by Apollo.

Some of the accessories are not so good — the bag is not waterproof, the tools are cheap, the light is fragile, and the tires (particularly the rear) go flat a lot. I have two rear flats in 18 months so I figure maybe par for the course. The phone holder and the lock are solid.

So the way battery cells work, they tend to be very large double-A type batteries, all wired together in parallel. Having your batteries run in parallel is what you want, but sometimes one cell fails and the rest of the batteries have to follow the lower voltage of the dying cell to not cause a short. This is what slowly kills a battery pack over time.

I really like that frame style — it's very basic, durable and easy to work on and mod. Based on the VDM-10 scooter. Common combo: 1000w x2, 25a controllers x2, 18.2ah 52v battery, top speed 37-40mph. I've ridden mine for over 2700 miles.
