Is the E Prime III Actually Good for Commuting?
Reddit's verdict: only if your commute is flat, short, and under 6 miles. The moment a hill or rough road enters the picture, users consistently report frustration — and often a return or an upgrade.

The Razor E Prime III is a budget-friendly entry-level electric scooter that Reddit users consistently describe as a decent starting point — but rarely a keeper. It earns praise for being lightweight, foldable, and easy to ride around flat terrain, but most owners end up upgrading after a few months once they hit its real-world limitations. The scooter genuinely appeals to casual riders who need something portable for short, flat commutes, but it falls short for anyone dealing with hills, longer distances, or rougher pavement. Community sentiment is mixed-to-negative, with many threads featuring owners who've already moved on to better options.

The E Prime III keeps showing up in 'I upgraded from this' posts. At $300, it does its job — but Reddit makes clear it's a starting point, not a destination, with owners frequently trading up to Segway, Gotrax, or Kaabo alternatives.
Unlike many competitors, the E Prime III requires a 3 mph manual kick before the throttle engages. Reddit newcomers find this confusing or annoying, and some mistook it for a malfunction on their first ride.
Hi. Bought a Razor e-prime 3 a few years back. Be jealous. I have rode this $300 beast until the wheels fell off. Besides my divorce, this is the best money I've ever spent.
View Original CommentGood choice! HUGE upgrade to the Razor!
View Original CommentGreat upgrade! (referring to replacing the Razor E Prime III with a Segway Ninebot ES3)
View Original CommentWhen folded it balances ok on the handlebars and the rear wheel. It has a kickstand, so when unfolded it stands just fine also.
View Original CommentThe maximum range is "Up to 15 miles", which means that is what they were able to make it go with a very light driver on smooth concrete driving on the eco mode. A rough rule of thumb is that in real life, you get 75% of what is advertised. Also, battery indicators are really inaccurate because lithium batteries have very flat discharge curves.
View Original CommentSounds about right, if you're doing a lot of stopping and starting. I had a Razor E-Prime 1st gen and it would do just under 10km (about 6 miles) while also saying "range up to 15 miles". Disappointing that Razor hasn't improved on this since 1st gen, and is still only making these cheap low-power low-range things. Not even worth the money they charge for them, imo.
View Original CommentThank you! Never knew about that and yeah it's sad no upgrades or innovation. I returned it and bought a Kaabo Skywalker 10S hopefully that one is better.
View Original CommentIf the 1st pic was taken around the rear hub, that looks like the spring that keeps the rear step brake up. I can't see too much from it, but you should be able to put it back to place by taking the two phillips screws off the rear mud guard cover and moving it with some needle nose pliers.
View Original CommentHaving ridden the ecoreco m5 for a week i've ended up deciding that the razor e-prime is much better value. Yeah, it's slower, and there's no suspension, so riding on rough surfaces is not good. But the range is actually about the same (despite a huge difference in advertised range), there's not much difference in hill climbing ability (very little for both) its much lighter to carry, it feels more fun, you can also use it as a kick scooter easily if you're out of battery as it's low enough to t
View Original CommentMy first scooter was the razor prime 3, i rode it for 3 years with the only problem being flats. I would never buy it again due to the solid rear tire, lack of suspension and poor brakes. I now also own a Turboant m10 and a Gotrax Eclipse, both of which would fit your needs with the Eclipse being the better of the two.
View Original CommentRazor is good at price, but given the hills, I would suggest Gotrax G6. Hills are not a problem for the G6.
View Original CommentUpdate: just called customer support. It turns out the battery was defected out of the box and will be shipped a new one in a couple weeks from now.
View Original CommentUpdate again: new battery still didn't fix the issue unfortunately. just gonna have to send the scooter back lol
View Original CommentPretty piss poor if it needs a new battery after 18 months of minimal use!!!!
View Original CommentMy Razor E Prime Air is about three years old. Last time I rode, after about a 15 minute ride it stopped working. It felt like the brake was applied even when it wasn't and the motor wouldn't fully engage. I let it charge, and now it is doing the same thing. The red light blinks when it is not charging. The motor won't engage. And when you try to push off it feels like the brake is engaged.
View Original CommentYou can currently buy a Segway max g30p for $629 on Best Buy. It's a well proven design, fairly water resistant, it will survive getting caught in a storm. Parts are readily available as well. A commute of 8 miles in total, the 10inch tubeless tires do a fair job of absorbing bumps.
View Original CommentDon't get a Hiboy or a Gotrax. Get a Segway.
