Summary

The Razor Power Core E100 is a budget entry-level electric scooter aimed squarely at younger kids, typically ages 8-12, and Reddit's overall sentiment leans negative for anything beyond the most casual use. Parents frequently report reliability issues after extended ownership, with throttle failures, controller burnouts, and battery degradation being the most common complaints. The scooter's all-or-nothing throttle — full power or nothing — is a recurring frustration for both kids and parents, making it feel jarring and hard to control. That said, it's cheap enough that many families accept it as a first scooter with modest expectations, and a dedicated DIY community exists around reviving and modifying these units.

Pros

  • Very affordable entry price makes it accessible as a first electric scooter for young kids
  • Replacement parts like controllers are cheap and widely available on Amazon (around $20 for a controller)
  • Robust enough mechanically that the motor and frame often outlast the electronics, making repairs worthwhile for DIYers
  • 24V brushed motor is hackable — users have successfully upgraded to lithium batteries and higher-voltage controllers
  • Kick-to-start design (requires 3 mph before motor engages) reduces wear on the motor and battery over time
  • Widely available second-hand, often found on Facebook Marketplace for $30-50, making it easy to grab a parts unit

Cons

  • All-or-nothing throttle with no variable speed control — it's full power or nothing, which multiple users say caused kids to crash or refuse to ride
  • Controllers fail frequently, and throttle assemblies are a known weak point across multiple ownership reports
  • Lead-acid batteries degrade fast; even after upgrading to lithium, users report continued electronic failures within a year or two
  • Razor's replacement parts availability is inconsistent — the official site has been reported as out of stock on key components
  • Razor customer support reportedly refuses to replace units, leaving owners stuck troubleshooting on their own
  • One Reddit commenter put it bluntly: 'They're toys. Junk. A decent scooter costs $500 minimum' — reflecting the ceiling on what this platform can deliver

The Throttle Problem Nobody Warns You About

Reddit parents consistently report that the E100's binary throttle — zero or full power with nothing in between — startles kids and leads to immediate loss of interest. One user said their daughter hit it once and never rode again. Fixing it requires swapping the controller entirely.

A $10 Scooter That Costs $100 to Keep Running

The E100 has become a modding platform by default. Users who scored one cheap on Marketplace often end up buying replacement batteries, controllers, and throttle assemblies — sometimes spending more on repairs than the scooter cost. The upside: it's genuinely fixable if you're willing to learn.

Owning Three of These Is a Warning, Not a Flex

One Reddit thread detailed a family with three PowerCore E100s — all broken at the same time, all with the same throttle-not-engaging issue. The post became a community troubleshooting session. It's a microcosm of the E100 experience: cheap to buy, expensive in time and frustration to maintain.

My son's scooter stop running so I repair it and made video about Razor E100 Troubleshooting — may it be helpful for somebody.

Not a lot. That's a brushed motor, and those have hard limits on how hard you can drive them before they eat the brushes. 36V might be too much for that dinky little thing, but it's not like you'll be destroying anything of value if it does give up the ghost, so I say send it and see what happens.

Check if voltage appears across the output connector from the controller when throttled. If not, the problem is likely inside the controller. This may be anything from basically just a contactor or a crude solid-state soft starter to an actual variable speed DC drive. All of these may have a contactor in them that could be causing the clicking.

Have you tried running it from other batteries? In my experience when anything powered by lead-acid batteries has the electronics working but the motor won't budge, it's because the batteries are basically dead — they can still provide the trickle of power to run some ICs or LEDs, but as soon as you attempt to run the motor their voltage immediately slumps and everything shuts down.

We have nothing but problems with our scooter. Same model as this. The throttle is a constant problem from the beginning. I've spent money replacing parts and it still has problems and they refuse to just replace the whole unit... I'll never buy one again.

Yeah controllers die. Way more likely to die than a motor anyway. Controllers are only $20 on Amazon. Not a huge loss if it doesn't work I suppose.

Lead acid batteries only last a number of years. Same with car batteries.

I bought a razor e100 from my friend for 10€ and changed the rear tire. I ordered a 36v controller and battery for it just to test its limits and give it to my little sister.

It might be the lead battery being no good.

Test the battery on a different charger. I have repaired a few razor scooters and it is almost always the battery that has failed on them.

I should have looked here first. I'm gonna buy a second hand from Facebook for $50. Already bought replacement batteries which I can't return.

Keep in mind when testing it the smaller Razors need to be pushed before the motor will start. They don't work from a standstill.

They're toys. Junk. Stop throwing money at them. A decent scooter costs 500 bucks minimum.

I've checked the razor site for replacement parts in the past and they were always out of stock so I stopped checking. I'll likely recycle/junk the two that still aren't working in the Spring and then just try and sell the batteries to recoup some of the money we've wasted on trying to get them to work.

I got one of them working again, but the other two are not. The 1st non-working one will accelerate, but then cut out intermittently or stop working for a while altogether. The 2nd non-working one flat out won't run at all. The batteries are all charged and reading correct voltages. The wire harness checks for continuity.

Just got one of these and hooked up a 40v lithium to it. I'm 200 lbs so waiting for my son to ride it.

Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage on the batteries.

Is it possible that the scooter has kick to start turned on? I am not good at electric scooter electronics.

You'll need a voltmeter.

I had a house full of kids try a brand new E100 and I couldn't give it away. No kid liked it, and my daughter refuses to ride it after she hit the throttle exactly once...never again. The throttle seems designed to make little kids crash and have very little control...unless I got a bad unit or something.

The e100 is kick to start meaning the motor won't engage until the wheel is going 3mph. Supposedly to help with wear and tear on the motor and battery. But agreed it's annoying as heck. After some research, this function comes from the controller, not the motor. So, if you want a zero start you just need to upgrade the controller.

These aren't serious scooters, they're just ride ons for little kids.
