Summary

The CityBug 2S (the Toyota Aygo / Citroën C1 / Peugeot 107/108 platform family) has built a passionate and loyal community around one core promise: being the ultimate cheap, reliable city car. Reddit sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with owners across Europe praising it as the modern equivalent of the Toyota Starlet — a frugal daily driver with a timing chain rather than a belt, making long-term ownership genuinely low-cost. The community skews toward first-time drivers, budget-conscious commuters, and people who want a car they can actually afford to run and maintain. What stands out most is how actively owners personalize and upgrade their cars with cheap mods, and how proud they are of their Bugs despite — or maybe because of — their simplicity.

Pros

  • Extremely low running costs: the timing chain (vs. a timing belt on competitors) means no expensive scheduled belt changes, and combined with minimal fuel consumption, owners consistently call it one of the cheapest cars to own in Europe
  • Huge active mod community with cheap upgrades: from AliExpress headrest cushions (£8), glove box add-ons (£15), and custom gear knobs (£15), to full Junsun CarPlay/Android Auto units and rear speaker installs, there's a proven mod path for nearly every budget
  • Mk2 gear selector swap is a well-documented upgrade that transforms the notoriously vague stock shifter into something much tighter and gated — a bolt-in swap from any 2014–2022 Aygo/C1/108 with a 1KR-FE engine
  • Seats from the Mk2 Aygo/C1/108 (2014–2022) fit as drop-in upgrades, adding adjustable headrests and modern comfort to older Bug interiors at used parts prices
  • Massive presence across Europe — spotted constantly in the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, and Ireland — making used parts, community knowledge, and local mechanic familiarity widely accessible
  • Strong nostalgic and cultural momentum building: owners compare its future classic status to the first-gen Twingo, and the community expects it to become a cult car as it fades from daily-driver status

Cons

  • Stock front seats lack adjustable headrests, a notable comfort gap that owners work around with AliExpress memory foam cushions or full seat swaps — neither is a simple fix for everyone
  • Known rear light seal failures are a common age-related issue; owners recommend proactively replacing all rear light seals to prevent water ingress, especially on higher-mileage examples
  • Stock audio system is widely considered inadequate — the 4-inch front speakers lack bass and most owners say you need both an aftermarket head unit and new speakers (JBL 422F, Pioneer TS-G400 or JVC CS-J420X) to notice a real difference
  • Road noise and cabin insulation are a recurring complaint; the most effective fix involves deadmat (butyl) under the carpet and fleece insulation — a multi-hour job that isn't beginner-friendly
  • Aftermarket LED headlight bulbs are illegal in the UK (MOT failure risk, up to £1,000 fine) because the reflectors aren't designed for them and can dazzle oncoming traffic — a trap many new owners fall into
  • Charging infrastructure is a non-issue (it's ICE), but the proprietary 5-pin XLR charging port on the electric Citybug2 scooter variant has proven nearly impossible to source — relevant for anyone who owns that specific model

The Gear Selector Swap That Changes Everything

Owners consistently call the Mk2 gear selector the single best upgrade for a first-gen CityBug — a bolt-in swap that replaces the vague, paint-stirring stock shifter with something that actually feels gated and precise. Any 1KR-FE unit from a 2014–2022 Aygo, C1, or 108 works, and you can find them at scrapyards for next to nothing.

Is the CityBug Becoming the Next Cult Classic?

Reddit's CityBug community is already drawing comparisons to the original Twingo's modern renaissance. The timing chain, the dirt-cheap running costs, and the sheer density of Bugs on European roads are all ingredients for a future classic — and owners who are driving them daily now are starting to realize they might be sitting on something special.

Budget Mods That Actually Make a Difference

Unlike most cars, the CityBug has a thriving ecosystem of cheap, high-impact mods: £8 AliExpress headrest cushions fix the no-adjustable-headrest problem, a £15 glove box add-on adds real storage, and a dashmat eliminates the infamous windscreen glare. The community has essentially crowdsourced a complete ownership upgrade guide.

As little as possible, they are freaking wallet savers. Just do the maintenance and seal the usual leak spots. Maybe some light/medium tint that is about it. Find a used leather wheel might be one of the better mods, actually touch it all the time.

These will last a very long time and will certainly be a classic. Not a classic for the design. But as the best car for cheap driving. This is the new 'Toyota Starlet'. A frugal car that had a big following. But I think the citybug will even be bigger. Important reason is the timing chain. Many small cars aren't bad but people don't want to invest in changing a belt. The chain keeps going. Labor is becoming very expensive. So belt changes cost a lot.

Memory foam headrest cushions. Cost me £8 for a pair on Aliexpress. Love them, and these cars benefit a lot from them since the front seats don't have adjustable headrests otherwise.

I'd recommend you do proper maintenance. Have it rust proofed, change all the rear light seals (common to give out at their age). One really good upgrade is the upgraded seats from Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 or Citroen C1 from 2014 to around 2022. Next I'd recommend you take the gear selector from the mentioned cars as well and maybe even the wheel.

The gear knob unscrews very easily, so I bought a custom pool ball and use that instead now! Check with your insurance first, but mine didn't consider it a mod. Didn't cost me more than £15 and makes my car feel a lot cooler! I also have black car mats with a blue trim which looks so much better.

Tip: If you have an old fashioned key and want a remote for your citybug you can order one from AliExpress for 10€ and it will work by simply swapping the components from your previous key and syncing it with your car, no programming needed. Nice and cheap quality of life improvement.

This sub is for kick scooters but I can't imagine electric scooters do anything but depreciate in value. If it's old, I would price it pretty low unless you want to hang onto it forever.

Eventually, I think it will become a classic. They're still too common (at least where I live) to be nostalgic, but as they slowly fade away, that will come. The first gen Twingo's modern fame is only a relatively recent thing, and they have been getting less common in that time. Helps that even today, a lot of first time drivers will be purchasing a used Aygo, C1 or 107/108.

Gear selector assembly from a Mk2 is the best upgrade you can do. The original shifter to me felt like stirring paint in a can, the mk2 shifter is much firmer and feels more gated than vague like the original. It makes a big difference to the driving experience.

Some of my favourite accessories: Microfibre cloths for a quick clean, Rain-X for less rain annoyance, Digital GPS Speedo because it's easier to read than the stock radio and more accurate, and a Vanmass phone holder.

Better speakers in the front, and adding speakers to the rear. As far as YouTubers go SBSV is probably the top one, also DAB DIY and Cyclone Cyd have some useful CityBug specific content.

I feel like all those LEDs would be too bright and distracting for night driving. The only one I would have wanted would be the fan speed dial though — that's a game changer. Instead of having to guess where it is or go all the way left or right.

I also love mine! It's from 2006. They are pretty popular in Poland! I usually can't take a walk or a drive without seeing one of them. I adore EVERYTHING about my little bug: the design, the fuel usage.

I got a Toyota Aygo 2. Perfect for driving around the city. The only thing I miss is wireless Android Auto. I'll probably get a different unit, then I'd improve the soundproofing and put better speakers.

Aftermarket car navigation. Junsun on AliExpress. Took some time to install, but it's great to have CarPlay or Android Auto available.

I got new custom gear knob, pedals and mats in my C1. Sure, nobody sees them from outside, but it feels like driving a race car from inside. Also new radio and speakers are plus... Now I just want some road sound dampening...

Best thing I've ever bought, hands down, was the dashmat, can actually see out of the windscreen!

Tinted rear and back window, nice wheel caps. Double Gasket set for doors and rear door. Tinted wind deflectors for front doors. Holder for sun glasses, new key housing. Battery operated snow foamer, ceramic foam and a micro fabric towel, because I can't drive the bug through the car wash, it has slight leaks at rear lights and I can't remove the antenna. New rear wiper arm and a lot of grease to protect it from corroding to the motor arm. Led bulbs for front lights.

I've bought these replacement speakers and the sound quality is so much better, though to properly notice the difference you would need an aftermarket headunit, took me about 10 mins to install.

I've always liked the idea of banded steelies on one of these. If you wanna go mad then I'd look at interior mods, I've wasted far too much time and money modding the exterior of cars only to realise it doesn't affect me one bit when I'm sat inside the thing.

Don't see many citybugs in this colour, and there's citybugs everywhere here in Portugal (once you get interested in a car you start noticing it everywhere). Very cool!

Weeell anything can be fitted with enough effort. There was this one person who fitted Porsche Boxster seats! Though funnily those still don't have adjustable headrests.

Some LED mods — drilled the fan speed knob and added a 3mm LED wired to the dash lighting. Looks great at night.

Relatively cheap deadmat (butyl), lifted chairs and carpet and did the floor pan. Then added about 2cm of fleece insulation before refitting the carpet and chairs. Not a hard job, not cheap cheap but not that pricey and got rid of a lot of the road noise.

No way an Irish city bug! Also no way it's registered from Wexford, that's where I'm from! It's also the same colour as mine.

I recommend the boot bag that hooks over the back headrests for the essentials: a water bottle, air compressor, bottle of oil, new wipers and a pair of crocs. Please don't downvote just because of the crocs!

I have a knee pad that stops your knee from touching the centre console while driving. It has helped me a lot with long distance drives.

You'd only notice the difference with JBLs if you had an aftermarket head unit. If you're keeping the stock head unit, then go for the JVC CS J420X, these are two way speakers that with the bass on the head unit turned all the way up will make the most out of your stock head unit and sound pretty good.

Led headlight bulbs, change the seals round the rear lights, v8r kit for replacement boot and door seals, decent tyres make a big difference, decent fuel seems to make a noticeable difference to mine too.

Not sure where you live, but aftermarket LED headlights bulbs are illegal in the UK, and would be an MOT failure / up to £1K fine. The Aygo's reflectors aren't designed for them, so they dazzle oncoming traffic.

Upgrade the crappy dashboard speakers. I just got some JBL, anything is an upgrade basically.

I think it's a single din, but you might be able to get a conversion for the top. I'd say add an aftermarket radio with carplay/AA if you are driving it a lot. If it remains a single din you still have plenty of options.

For the 5-pin charger port issue on the Citybug2 scooter: the plug itself is an XLR 5 pin connector. I would try to get a multimeter and check which pairs are connected and according to that made a charger plug using audio XLR 5 pin connector.

One of the best things is that it has unisex appeal for new young drivers. I don't see many turning down having a 107 or Aygo as their first car.

Those rims are really rare on the CityBug. You can be lucky they came with the car.

Today I added a battery powered LED light with motion sensor on the backside of the rear seats in the trunk. Had a magnetic torch before which I had to switch manually. With the motion sensor its magic. My rear window is tinted very dark so my trunk is a black hole even with street lights shining in the night.

The Mk2 gear selector swap is a like-for-like bolt-in place swap but the Mk2 feels much tighter. Makes a real difference.
