Summary

The Dualtron Popular is a compact dual-motor commuter scooter that has generated sharply divided opinions on Reddit. Owners who treat it as a fast city commuter generally come away satisfied with its punchy performance and Dualtron build quality, but those expecting off-road durability or long-term reliability often end up frustrated. The scooter has a recurring quality control problem: screws come loose early (sometimes within the first 50km), and the factory does not apply threadlock from the factory. Suspension is the other major weak point — the front bottoms out on uneven pavement, and the small 9-inch tubed tires limit comfort on rough roads. It suits riders who want a fast, head-turning commuter and are willing to do a small amount of initial maintenance, but it is a tough sell for anyone expecting a set-and-forget experience.

Pros

  • Dual-motor performance punches well above its size — real-world owners report reaching 63–65 km/h on flat ground, and the scooter handles steep urban hills (26–27% grade) at around 14 km/h even at 88 kg rider weight
  • Three battery options (14Ah, 20Ah, 25Ah) give buyers flexibility; the top 52V 25Ah version uses Samsung/LG cells and delivers a realistic 35–55 km of range depending on speed
  • IPX5 water resistance is factory-rated, making it usable in light rain — a meaningful differentiator for daily commuters compared to many rivals in the price bracket
  • Drum brakes require almost zero maintenance and hold up reliably for street use without the pad-replacement cycles of hydraulic disc systems
  • LED lighting package draws consistent praise — night riders specifically call out the headlight and accent lights as a genuine standout feature for visibility and street presence
  • Stable at high speed despite the small 9-inch wheel diameter — multiple owners note the scooter tracks confidently at top speed, which is counterintuitive given the tire size

Cons

  • Factory screws are not threadlocked and begin working loose within the first 50–200 km of normal pavement riding — fixing this requires disassembling the bottom deck and applying Loctite manually, something Dualtron's own UK dealer has acknowledged
  • Front suspension bottoms out on anything beyond smooth tarmac, and the 9-inch tubed tires amplify every bump; one owner confirmed converting to tubeless using DT3 rims as a workaround
  • Software is reported as buggy — the scooter can spontaneously drop into a low-power mode unrelated to motor temperature, requiring the rider to cycle through modes in the app to reset it
  • App-only settings management on newer units (no physical mode button) creates friction for riders who want quick adjustments on the go, and documentation trails behind the hardware changes
  • By the time a buyer is considering the 25Ah dual-motor variant at its UK/EU price point (~£1,800), alternatives like the Segway Ninebot Max G3 or Dualtron Eagle offer better suspension, larger tubeless tires, and more refined build quality
  • Long-term durability is uncertain — one owner reported the scooter functionally dead at 500 km with a failed headlight, cracked steering column, broken front shock, and a propulsion cutout that Dualtron support could not diagnose

The Screw Problem Is Real — But Fixable

Across multiple threads, owners confirm that loose screws are not a fluke — they're a factory-wide miss. The fix (Loctite + retorque before first ride) takes 20 minutes and solves it, but Dualtron shipping a performance scooter without this step is a legitimate complaint that shows up in almost every long-term ownership report.

Fast Commuter or Overpriced Compromise?

The Popular sits in an awkward market position: too expensive to be a casual entry-level buy, but lacking the suspension and tire setup that more seasoned riders expect at its price. Owners who benchmark it against the Dualtron Mini or Segway Max G2/G3 consistently point out that better-equipped alternatives exist at similar or lower cost.

Single Motor vs. Dual: Two Very Different Scooters

Reddit discussions make clear that the single and dual motor versions attract different riders with different expectations. The dual motor is a genuine speed machine with hill-climbing ability that surprises owners; the single motor is more of a fast commuter that leaves some buyers immediately looking to upgrade. The performance gap between the two variants comes up repeatedly as a buying decision factor.

Dualtron offers an affordable option for Popular with a 52V 25-amp battery for about 1800 pounds in the UK. This price for a dual motor scooter with such a battery capacity is hard to beat in this segment.

The Ninebot Max G2 would be a better choice over the P65. The P65 has no suspension yet it weighs more than the Max G2 which has a full suspension system and will give you a more comfortable ride.

You don't understand how steep 30 degrees is. The scooter can't do 30% grade let alone 30 degrees.

I have the dual motor version. For its size its a beast but i find it lacks in the suspension department. Off the road is very bumpy then you would find it bottoming out quite often. The screws arent secured with threadlock so i got them fixed in my local repair shop. Other than that its a very good scooter. Very fast and torquey. Lights on it are amazing. Head turner for sure during night rides. They have 3 different battery versions with the largest variant (25ah) is Samsung/LG. I have the 20ah.

Dualtron popular owner. The big letdown is the software. Often turns itself into slow accelerating scooter. You have to set it on a low mode and then back to climbing mode. The suspension is a bit squeaky. Sprayed it with a heap of white lithium grease where the arms attach to the spring and its good now. Speed wise, it's quite stable at high speeds given the small 9" tires.

After 4 months and 500kms later, I can confirm too its really shit and all I rode on was footpath and sealed roads! Occasional bump in the footpath due to tree roots. Screws came loose, mudguard wobbled, and it was a constant maintenance headache for what should be a simple commuter.

Bought one less than a month, I've been able to ride 7km distance and then the battery goes to 0%. I've had it for all of a week, the other 3 weeks it's been in the repair shop.

Don't read too much into ground clearance. A lot of commentors have some reflexive, speculative chip on their shoulder about drum brakes as a technology, without any actual experience with the specific implementation or use case.

I have Victor and without DIY solutions, mods and so it is crap too. Maybe not as bad as the POP, but for that money I want more.

I had a Dualtron Thunder: awesome scooter. In between owning those two, I had a Dualtron Victor: that was such a complete piece of shit, I won't ever buy a Dualtron again. I currently have a Segway GT2 and I Love it.

In Europe (the E suffix on the P65E) you're maxed out at 25 km/h. It's dreadfully slow and feels more dangerous in traffic than going to the speed limit.

I have the popular. Its a beast. Reached 63km/hr on flat surfaces and climbs hills like a beast. I weigh 88kg and took it through the steepest hill in my area (26-27%) and it climbed at 14km/hr. Suspension is a bit lacking but for general use i havent had any issues. Very happy with it.

Damn. 3 months in and the screws are coming loose. WTF? I don't even do anything out of the ordinary on it other than ride it on the footpaths to work. No offroad or jumps.

Worse thing is the screws are behind the wheel. Mudguard wobbles. I need to take the wheel off to retighten the screws and put some sort of treatment on the screws to stop it coming loose again.

Nah, software just buggy. Happens anytime even at the start of the day when I haven't even been riding yet.

I have one. Well said in your original post, if you know why you have one it's a really good scooter. If you expect it to be a Wolf Warrior, then you'll be disappointed. Range: 52v 25ah version can get you about 35-55km realistically depending on your speed. Hills & Top speed - 65kmh, eats most hills. Build Quality - It's Dualtron so most things are good to high quality. The whole thing on screws coming loose it's easy to see why some people get annoyed.

Update for those looking into the Pop. Bought it from Minimotors 7 months ago and have had only a few minor issues with it, mainly stemming from some weird design decisions made by Dualtron and some minor factory misses. Compared to the Apollo Explore these issues are small potatoes. The screws were loose on the bottom deck, but it was easy to fix with tightening.

It's decently reliable, the mudflap electrical line issue was not only installing the back wheel wrong but because the rear suspension had come out almost all the way because they never Loctited it. I had to remove the bottom deck and tighten it with Loctite added. Currently having an engine cutoff issue due to large bumps, something electrical that I haven't found yet. Nowadays the Dualtron Pop is a little outdated and I would go with the Segway Ninebot Max G3 which wasn't available when I bought.

Yes, the inner tube on the rear was one of the first problems I had with it. I bought a thicker replacement tube from amazon and then slimed it well. Haven't had a flat since then. I also found out that rear suspension was a factor in snapping the rear taillight wires and the problem with the rear drum brake line. For some reason, they never loctited the suspension.

I have the Dualtron Popular. The front suspension bottoms out over bumps. The warranty won't cover water damage. With drum brakes I don't expect any maintenance. I recommend a scooter with larger wheels than the Popular and better suspension too such as the Dualtron Eagle.

I have dual motors with 20 ah battery. I rode on the flat for about 30 km and had perhaps 20 percent battery left from memory.

It's a Dualtron, you know those speed beasts cops know all about and will keep an eye on you for. Apart from that it's rather the black sheep of the Dualtrons due to its design. Get the single motor if you want something civilized or a dual motor and watch people shake their heads at you on the hike/bike lanes.

In my experience, a lot of Dualtron scooters need service after riding 500 km, and sometimes even just after 100 km. Often, they come in for small tweaks or checks on how they've been used.

Do you consider that 200km is a significant distance? You're kidding I hope. It's a ridiculous distance, there shouldn't be any servicing with such a small distance. I was thinking of buying it, but after your comment I am clearly going to abstain and keep my Segway G30 in perfect health after 14,000km with just a change of tire and front brake.

The top speed for the single motor variant could be around 55 km/h. Real-world range depends on the battery. With a 9-inch wheel, the 14Ah battery could provide around 35 km, the 20Ah battery around 50 km, and the 25Ah battery around 65 km.

DT pop has 450W motor, so around 40-45 kph for the single motor. Range depends on version 14ah/20ah or 25ah.

40km at 25 kph is the best mileage setting for the Dualtron Pop.

What is a long time? A guy was selling his scooter on here with 180 cycles and he had 7000 km on his ride. You picked 2 companies that meet all your check marks so your next move is to find them locally so you can get a tactile feel and make your decision.

If you like Dualtron, just go to their site and browse models. They have an impressive lineup with lots of options. Most of them reach 50 km/h.

My Kukirin M3 is rated at 24 degree incline for a single 500w rear motor so I am curious as to what would be the performance for a dual 450w motor. Given its high torque and speed it should do at least 25-30 degrees.

I have a Pop too and really like it. It's a noisy scooter. Not an off-road stunt scooter but a fast commuter. Much like a beginner scooter, only faster and cooler.
