GoTrax G2 Reddit Verdict: Too Many Dealbreakers

Summary

The GOTRAX G2 is a budget entry-level electric scooter aimed primarily at college students and short-distance commuters who need something cheap to get around campus. Reddit sentiment is largely negative, with users consistently pointing to poor range, questionable build quality, and unreliable battery life as dealbreakers. Most experienced community members actively discourage buying it and recommend saving up for better alternatives. It's tolerated as a last resort when budget is truly the only constraint, but rarely praised beyond its low sticker price.

Pros

  • Accessible price point around $200 makes it one of the cheapest entry points into electric scooters
  • Flat-ground short commutes under 2.5 miles one way are generally manageable on a single charge
  • Lightweight and compact form factor makes it easy to carry and store compared to heavier commuter scooters
  • Adequate for very casual, low-speed campus riding where top speed expectations are kept minimal

Cons

  • Tiny 129Wh battery struggles to deliver even the advertised 7-mile range under real-world conditions, making it unreliable for commutes over 5 miles round trip
  • Battery degradation reported within less than a year of use, with units dying shortly after showing a full charge indicator
  • Known hardware faults flagged by experienced community members, including a battery contact design described as fundamentally flawed
  • Top speed of around 14-15 mph leaves speed-conscious riders unsatisfied — community consensus is you need at least 600W motor to hit an honest 20 mph
  • GOTRAX customer service and warranty support widely criticized, with reports of finger-pointing between retailers and the manufacturer when issues arise
  • Community regularly recommends alternatives like the NIU KQi2 Pro, Ninebot Max, or even a used Xiaomi M365 over the G2 at any price point

Brakes Failed on Day One

Multiple Reddit users report quality control issues appearing immediately out of the box — one owner had brake problems and squeaking tires within the first day of riding. For a scooter marketed as a daily commuter, that's a pattern hard to ignore.

The Cheapest Option Isn't Always the Cheapest in the Long Run

Reddit's electric scooter community has a consistent warning for G2 buyers: cheap upfront often means expensive later. Between battery replacements, repair costs, and GOTRAX's notorious customer service runaround, many owners end up spending more than if they'd bought a Ninebot or NIU from the start.

Can You Actually Rehab a Dead G2?

A surprising number of threads involve users trying to revive secondhand or broken G2 units. GOTRAX no longer manufactures replacement controllers for the G2, making repairs a dead end — a detail that says a lot about the company's long-term product support.

A while ago they made themselves a deserved name for selling cheap poorly-built crap, with a particular emphasis on awful battery cells of unknown provenance that were known to underperform and die early. They've been recovering from that, but it's the sort of reputation that's really hard to get rid of.

Tiny 129wh battery. You should be fine if you re-charge at work, but it'll struggle doing 6 miles on a single charge. Honestly, I'd save up a bit and wait for deal on something like the NIU KQi2 Pro.

Need for speed? You're gonna want something that goes at least 25 MPH. You won't be satisfied going 15.5 MPH after a week or two. Hopefully you can find something within your budget.

I've been learning the hard way buying my scooter was a HUGE mistake. Everyone stay away from this company!!!! They do not even have acceptable safety standards and refuse to stand behind their products. Over three weeks ago I hit a small bump going down a huge hill on my GX1 and there is an absolutely TINY little screw holding the handlebars upright, which broke when I hit the bump causing me to crash and severely injure myself. This is not the first time one of their scooters has broken on me.

There isn't anything else in the range. For a little more you can get the 365 if it's on sale somewhere, but you shouldn't have any trouble with a 5 mile round trip with the GXL. On flat ground I can get consistently over 10 miles.

I got it trying to find a scooter to get around my college campus and the brakes messed up first day as well as a squeaking in both tires. All one day in. I would not recommend it.

If you only can spend 300, then search online for a used m365 - even used they are way better than any Gotrax!

Nice review! I have got Gotrax GX2 for nearly two months. I love it very much and sometimes I don't think any other dual motor scooter can beat at this price point personally.

It has a nice look to it... you will find a horror story with every scooter out there... I would not worry so much over them... enjoy your ride!

It looks so cool! It has such a futuristic, mechanical vibe! There's a discount event going on, and I want to buy one. I'm torn between the GX2 and GX3.

The G2 I wouldn't touch it. At $250 or less the XR or GXLv2 should be fine. To get to an honest 20mph you need to go at least 600 or more.

Did you leave your scooter charging for many days? That will cause battery degradation.

It was always charged after my rides. Left until the indicator said the battery was full. Had to buy a new battery.

Did you ever find the problem? I'm having a similar issue with my second hand g2, no error codes and battery says fully charged.

Both of those, plus the GXL and GXLv2, are badly designed products with known hardware faults. Get something with the battery in the deck.

The cheapest scooter never really turns out to be the cheapest in the long run. Both of these brands are not known for producing reliable, long lasting scooters. Stick with a Niu KQi series or Ninebot Max series scooter so that you get something that is well built and easy to get support on.

Usually I'd say stay away from this price range for scooters as they're cheaply built, severely underpowered, tiny batteries and little to no customer support.

I also heard GOTRAX got a F rating from the business bureau or something like that, which probably isn't a good sign. Combined with their poor customer service and crap quality volume-seller scooters, I can definitely see why their reputation is the way it is.

I'd give GoTrax a thumbs down in the way of performance and reliability. The products they make don't perform as advertised. I've owned a GoTrax campus pro since last Christmas. Sadly it doesn't perform well under basic usage. I ride it 6 miles a day 5 days a week to get to work. It usually slows down and dies 2 days after it charges which disappoints me considering I ride on flat streets to commute. I've had to repair it every other month from tires to electrical issues which has been costly.

I recently buy a gotrax scooter at Best Buy and it only last two week. It doesn't want to charge but the charger is working fine cuz the light is on. I went to return it but they didn't accept it. Their return policy is only 14 days and the scooter last 16 days. So I reached out to gotrax website and they don't want to refund my money back they said to go back to Best Buy and Best Buy said I have to reach out to gotrax. Neither of them want to take responsibility so I lost 550$.

Hey guys so I bought a gx2 and it was the most fun thing ever. Everything was working perfect and one day it just stopped. Something happened and there were a bunch of issues. Gotrax told me they were going to send me new parts. A new console battery and brake pads. They sent me brake calipers and said something happened at the warehouse where it was getting shipped.

Just wanted to share a serious issue I've encountered with my GOTRAX after only 100 miles of use. The wires running through the front tire are getting cut because there's barely any space between the front wheel and the frame. Every time I turn, the wires rub against the sharp edge of the frame, and I'm genuinely worried they could eventually get severed. This feels like a pretty big design flaw, and it's definitely a safety concern.

Do not buy Aovo as it's a knockoff/clone of the real M365.

For those of us with only our feet in the water of e-scooters, this was a genuinely helpful read. I wish level-headed and transparent takes on scooters like this were more abundant!

Thanks for the advice! Both Segway and NIU are a bit too expensive for my budget but I managed to find a deal on Amazon that is decent.

We dont usually recommend any of those gotrax scooters. If you are really that desperate the rival has air filled tires the ride will be better. The other model is for kids.

I absolutely love the look of the GX series. Gorgeous. However, having seen the quality of their other scooters and having dealt with their customer service, I'll never know if their quality has improved because I wouldn't own one. Short of somebody giving me one, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Interacting with them over a $20 part that I paid for was so vile, I will forever warn others not to support them. FOREVER.

My first was a used former rideshare es4 around that price over a year ago and it was my gateway drug. It also never let me down. I was sorry to hear so much hate against them on this sub because I never had any problems with it.
