Summary

The GOTRAX G4 is a budget-to-mid-range commuter scooter that divides Reddit pretty sharply — some riders log thousands of miles with zero issues, while others report early failures and infuriating customer service. It's generally aimed at casual commuters, first-time scooter owners, and parents buying for teens who don't need (or can't justify) a premium brand. The 10-inch pneumatic tires are a genuine standout for urban riding, handling cobblestones and rough pavement that smaller-wheeled competitors struggle with. Real-world range lands consistently between 13–21 miles depending on speed mode and rider weight — well short of the advertised figure. UL certification makes it one of the few options legally sold in cities like NYC with strict PEV laws.

Pros

  • 10-inch pneumatic tires absorb rough city roads and cobblestones noticeably better than 8.5-inch competitors like the XR Elite — riders doing Manhattan DoorDash reported riding straight through surfaces that would 'require new dental work' on the Elite
  • Integrated tiller lock (handlebar fold latch) is a unique feature not found on most competing scooters in the price range, useful for portability and storage
  • UL certified, making it legally compliant for sale and use in cities like NYC that ban non-certified PEVs — rules out most alternatives in the same price bracket
  • Solid performance for commutes under 10 miles: 20 mph top speed, capable acceleration, and at least one owner logged nearly 2,000 miles with no mechanical or electrical issues
  • Rubber pneumatic tires are easier to change than some competing designs, which experienced riders noted as a practical durability advantage
  • Decent value as a backup or secondary scooter — one owner kept theirs as a daily backup after buying a more expensive primary, and it continued to perform reliably

Cons

  • Advertised 25-mile range is fiction — independent tests and owner reports consistently show 13–16 miles on level 2 and up to 21 miles on level 1 at 180 lbs on flat terrain; marketing numbers only apply under lab-ideal conditions
  • Customer service is a recurring complaint: unresponsive phone lines, canned email replies, no BBB rating, and at least one rider reported a broken handlebar weld that GoTrax refused to cover under warranty
  • Build quality is inconsistent — fragile plastic with air holes that cracked on unboxing for some users, pre-cracked rear fender screw holes, and brakes that are either weak or extremely noisy depending on the unit
  • No companion app — unlike Segway/Ninebot and others, the G4 has no Bluetooth connectivity, leaving riders with only the built-in display for battery and speed data
  • Replacement parts are scarce and slow to ship through GoTrax directly; some riders reported waiting weeks for fenders and other basic components
  • At this price point (~$300–400 new), the Ninebot Max G30LP and Niu KQi3 Pro are frequently recommended as better long-term investments with stronger reliability records and broader community support

The Tires Are the Real Selling Point

Most Reddit debates about the G4 eventually land on the same thing: the 10-inch pneumatic tires. Riders upgrading from 8.5-inch scooters consistently say the G4 handles rough urban terrain in a completely different class — less about specs, more about a genuinely different ride feel on bad pavement.

Good Scooter, Terrible Company?

A consistent split runs through G4 threads: the hardware is often praised, but GoTrax as a company draws sharp criticism. Reports of broken welds, denied warranty claims, and canned customer service responses suggest the scooter's value depends heavily on whether you ever need to contact support.

Reddit Keeps Talking People Out of It

Multiple threads show buyers who arrived asking 'is the G4 good?' and left planning to buy a Ninebot instead. The sub's consensus heavily favors alternatives at a slight premium — but a notable minority of long-term G4 owners push back, reporting thousands of miles of trouble-free riding.

You won't find many people on this sub recommending scooters from Gotrax, Hiboy or Unagi. Pretty much the worst three brands you can buy for reliability.

I have two G4s for my kids. They only have about 100 miles on them, no issues so far. I got a good deal on them and would buy them again. People here hate on GoTrax for a number of reasons. Most complaints are probably justified. It's an ok scooter but depends on what you're going to use it for.

The worst customer service in the world. I would never ever recommend any GOTRAX product!

No. It is a bad idea to buy a new Gotrax, let alone a used one. You will be throwing your money away.

I have an old GoTrax GXL v1 that I paid $198 for on sale over three years ago. I have gotten between 8,000 and 10,000 miles on it. I have ridden it every single day to and from work and shopping on my days off. People in this subreddit trash GoTrax, but I've had nothing but a good experience. Not everyone wants or needs a $1k-$3k scooter.

On the G4 I manage to only get a max of 14 miles of range on slow mode and on fast mode even less. This is on flat ground weighing about a buck fifty.

I have the 45km range version, and from a full charge get around 24km range on level 1, and 16km on level 2. This assumes full throttle the entire time. I just got mine and it already has 600km on it. Great scooter that I only bought because everyone was hating on 'gotrash', and the crowd is always wrong.

I have one; when my Emove cruiser shit the bed during light rain, my g4 continued to serve me well. I still have it as a backup scooter right now, though my p100 is my daily driver. My G4 is still good, I may have gotten lucky but that's my experience with it.

Honest review here (I got a Gotrax G4 and returned after 3 weeks): First of all, the Customer Service was much better than I firstly thought. CS rep was actually really responsive and helped me a lot in my refund process. Also, 350W motor is a plus, as it speeds up quite fast compared to 300W motor. Second, the build on Gotrax G4 was really bad, fragile plastic with lots of air holes and crack when I opened it the first time.

For around that price, get a Niu KQi 100P ($250) or even better, the Inmotion Air Pro ($299). Those are excellent entry level scooters. The latter option would run circles around even a new G4, honestly. Gotrax doesn't have a good reputation. Particularly with their lower end models like the G4.

Yet another edit: With some more experience, running mostly in L1, and optimizing for battery use I got 21.3 miles on a charge, flat course, Manhattan, 180 lb rider. Not bad.

My friend has one, solid scooter for the money. Other options available but the G4 is a solid one in my opinion.

Under no circumstance should you go with Gotrax. My wife bought this scooter in February, 2 tire pops, and now electronic console fried itself within 8 months. She takes very good care of things and weighs 110lbs, definitely does not beat on it. The customer support is horrendous, manipulative and they got stripped of a BBB rating. A garbage company.

I can't understand what people are doing with these scooters that they have such a bad experience. My only complaint for the g4 is the weight. It's a clunker and you're lucky to get 20mph. Other than that I'm not getting flat tires, bending handle bars or having any of the issues that were expressed by others. I've had it for over a year and use it 3 times a week for 60 minutes each day (nyc streets). It's been reliable outside of the battery life.

A weld broke while he was riding and therefore his handle bars collapsed. GO TRAX will not stand behind their product and basically has told me to buy a new one. The issue was a broken weld that holds the handle bars to the board. This was unpreventable.

Gotrax is known for having crappy customer service and Hiboy is known for having none. Would highly recommend spending the 40 dollars extra to get the Ninebot Max G30LP which goes 4 mph faster and has a little more tested range than both the Hiboy and Gotrax.

If there isn't an app made by the manufacturer for the scooter, it's extremely unlikely that a third party developer will ever make something for it. GoTrax is an ok brand as far as bang for your buck, but most of them are pretty cheap and a manufacturer can only do so much.

I'm the same exact weight and have the same experience! It's a great scooter and very powerful. I got about 13 miles before blinking, but still got up to 20mph until mile 15-16, and died at mile 18 at 5mph. Considering I rode on level 2 the whole time, I'm very impressed so far.

I'm upgrading from the Elite for similar reasons — NYC streets with potholes and cobblestones are not good with the Elite. The G4's 10 inch wheels seem to handle rough terrain much better.

The G30LP is objectively way better than both the G4 or S2.

This happened to me on a cheap scooter — the button in the brake that senses if it's actuated might be broken, and that results in an error code on bootup. Try to squeeze and wiggle around the brakes when it's showing the error and see if that does it.

Hurts the hell out of your knees if you live in a city with messed up streets. It gets flats frequently so I replaced them with tubeless tires. Fender broke on me and it took forever to replace as they were slow to remanufacture the parts. Me personally, had fun riding it but I retired it and barely use it anymore.

Rear tire tube doesn't last, and support is HORRIBLE. They don't answer their phones and all email replies are just canned responses. They carry almost ZERO replacement parts. Terrible company. Look at their BBB review. HORRIBLE.

DO NOT BUY IT; two tires went flat after a few months, replaced it. After a few months, rear tire went flat again. I bought a rear motor and tire assembly (100 bucks), and replaced the rear motor with the tire. The scooter starts beeping, and the accelerator won't work anymore. Just sent an email to Gotrax, but got no reply. Called them, and the people who answered didn't know anything.

I ended up going with the GoTrax. When I went there it was more or less brand new, the tires had just been replaced with air tires and the battery health/speed were perfect. The guy threw in the pump for the tires for free, so I went for it. As a test I actually took it on a 10 KM ride from the seller's house back home and it was great.

Please understand that when people recommend against GoTrax for quality, that poor quality is rarely apparent when you first buy it. Good luck, and hopefully we won't see you in the sub in a few months asking for advice on repairing your broken GoTrax or asking for cheap replacement scooters because yours is dead.

Ok so you all have done something that is extremely rare for me. You have convinced me to ditch the idea of the GoTrax, and go ahead and get the Ninebot max G30LP. I did some more research and settled on the G30LP — a lot of it was the sheer amount of positive feedback about that scooter from you all, reviews, and other sources.

It's true that Gotrax doesn't have the best reputation for reliability and customer service. I rode a Gotrax scooter for 4 years before finally upgrading — and the scooter still functions. I just wanted more speed and range. Expect to lose 4-5 mph of top speed when your battery is below 50%. That 25 mile range is not real — Rider Guide measured about 15 miles.

I cannot express enough the love I have for mine. Approaching 2,000 miles on mine. Never any mechanical or electrical issues. Original battery maybe at 85% health. Best scooter for changing tires! Still has original performance in terms of speed and acceleration.

It's a pretty good scooter, especially for a 5 mile commute. The range is actually about 11-14 miles for a 160-175lb person on flat terrain in normal weather conditions. The manufacturer stats are always wrong on just about every scooter.

Treat it gently. Very gently. Like REALLY extra soft baby gently. The back fender screws show little cracks radiating out from the holes. That baby comes pre-cracked for your convenience.

If you wanted an app, Gotrax doesn't have one for any of their scooters — that is one thing I looked at when doing research on what scooter to get. You're essentially stuck with the built-in screen.

Google search shows E4 is a dead motor. Check the wires for damage or could be the controller.

New controller from GoTrax installed. No luck. Same issues: beeping and no response from the throttle. Brand new wheel assembly and controller didn't resolve the issue.

Just bought two used ones, GoTrax G4. They're from 2021 with 450 miles each. Rides well, hits 20mph fast, and I am 190 pounds. Looks super solid compared to the Xiaomi mi m365 I had. Lock and latch looks solid. Inflating tires is easily accessible compared to what Razor scooters have.

My family has 4 GoTrax G4s and we love them! We recommend them to everyone and we're always being questioned about them and having people stop us to ask if they can check them out.

Amazing review and totally confirms what I and my teammates found riding the G4 and comparing it to the XR Elite, and we got about the same range with a 165 lb rider.

I had the same issue due to not having my side reflector panels on to cover the power wire to my motor. I had to take it off, cut away the shrink tube, solder the wires back together and then individually heat shrink tube them. It works like new now.
