Summary

The Segway Ninebot MAX G2 is widely regarded as one of the best mid-range commuter scooters available, earning strong loyalty from daily riders who praise its dual suspension, build quality, and overall ride comfort. The community consensus is that it's a solid buy — especially at or below $799 — though owners are quick to flag recurring issues with the internal charger dying over time and loose rear fender screws that rattle after extended use. It targets urban commuters who want a reliable, low-maintenance scooter that handles rough pavement without beating them up, and it fits that role better than most competitors in its class. Long-term owners regularly report thousands of miles with minimal intervention beyond tire pressure and basic lubrication, though heavier riders (230+ lbs) will notice noticeably reduced range.

Pros

  • Suspension is a genuine upgrade over hardtail scooters — multiple owners who switched from the G30 series describe the difference as 'night and day,' with the G2 handling bumps, cracks, and rough pavement significantly better at speed
  • Exceptional build durability reported across thousands of kilometers of daily commuting, with one owner logging 3,200 km in a year of five-day-a-week riding with no mechanical failures beyond a charger replacement
  • Top speed of 35 km/h (in global/unrestricted mode) and strong acceleration in S+ mode make it genuinely faster than its predecessor, with real-world range of 26–28 km from 90% charge for a ~100 kg rider on hilly terrain
  • Large and active community means spare parts are cheap and widely available on AliExpress, and most known issues have documented fixes — the scooter is highly repairable compared to niche brands
  • Segway's app ecosystem and consistent firmware support give owners ongoing quality-of-life improvements, including adjustable start speed, drive modes, and speed limits that competitors often lack

Cons

  • Internal charger is a known failure point — multiple owners report it dying after extended use, especially if left plugged in overnight; buying an external 71W backup charger from the start is widely recommended by the community
  • Noticeable performance drop-off below 50% battery due to the 36V architecture — speed and hill-climbing ability fall off significantly in the second half of a charge, a limitation competitors using 48V systems don't share
  • Rear fender rattle is a widespread manufacturing issue — many owners across multiple unit replacements report a missing or loose screw in the metal support bracket under the fender, causing it to knock against the plastic shell
  • Front wheel 'play' (slight lateral movement in the fork) is a persistent concern in the community, though most experienced owners and long-term riders consider the amount seen in typical units non-dangerous and within acceptable tolerances
  • At 27 kg (roughly 60 lbs), it's one of the heaviest scooters in its class — riders who need to carry it up stairs regularly find this a dealbreaker, and it's significantly heavier than lighter alternatives like the Segway F3
  • Value proposition weakens above $800 — at $999, the community largely agrees that better-specced alternatives with dual suspension, larger batteries, or 48V systems start becoming available from Apollo and others

The Internal Charger Problem Nobody Mentions at Purchase

Reddit owners consistently flag the G2's built-in charger as a weak link that tends to fail over time — and Segway's own repair tutorials for it reference the G30, not the G2. Most experienced owners now recommend buying a $12 external brick from AliExpress before you ever need it.

Worth It at $799. A Harder Sell at $999.

The community's price verdict is remarkably consistent: the MAX G2 is a strong buy around the $799 mark, but once it climbs toward $1,000, alternatives with 48V systems, adjustable dual suspension, and larger batteries start eating into its value case. Watch for flash sales and holiday pricing.

Heavier Riders Get a Different Scooter

At 120 kg, the G2 still handles hills and sustains decent speeds — but range shrinks noticeably, performance in the second half of the battery gets sluggish, and the rear shocks can bottom out on sharp drops. For riders over 230 lbs, the experience diverges significantly from what lighter users report.

It was a good deal at the pre-order price of $799 but it's been creeping up in price lately and it seems like it's $999 everywhere now. If you are not in a rush I would wait until the price drops back down. That should give Segway some time to work the bugs out too. But it's a big upgrade if you value having a suspension. The ride quality on it is really amazing compared to the G30P.

Max owner here. Mine is at around 2500 kilometre mark now. I've cleaned it, lubed bearings and kept the tyres at 45 psi. I ride it five days a week regardless of weather. Leave it plugged in on charge overnight and had no problems whatsoever. I've not babied it and I've not neglected it. Haven't needed to adjusted the breaks or suspension from factory.

I assume everyone thinks I'm some 13 year old edgy teen scooting around but in reality I'm just a short 5'5" 36 year old lol.

I'd say it is. I preordered mine from Best Buy at launch and I think that's what I paid. No regrets whatsoever.

Electric kicks in Vic sell the global edition. More than likely other Aus retailers will sell the 25kph model.

Did your Max G2 have that 'knock' sound from the rear fender? I've gone through 4 Max G2s (one exchange, second stolen. Third exchange, riding 4th now) and all of them came with the knock from the factory. I discovered that in the metal support/protection bracket on the underside of the fender, it was missing a screw at the back near the taillight, so the metal protection bracket would slap against the plastic fender! All 4 of them were missing this screw with widely-varying manufacturing dates.

Looks like there's an Ibotta deal for $100 more back as a rebate too, if the scooter being on sale doesn't disqualify for the rebate per the fine print!

You can use Xiaodash to change the serial number — did it easy peasy. Will void your warranty but can always change it back. Rolling down the street at 35 in S mode now, with a quick toggle back to D mode if I see the fuzz.

Ninebot sells by far the most scooters of all companies for a reason. They make their own parts so they ideally fit for their scooters, their scooters are of good quality and competitively priced.

I've got one. I had to replace the internal charger because the scooter stopped charging, likely because I used to keep it always plugged in. The 2nd issue which is current is the back fender is loose and rattles like crazy when riding. I need to tighten it but haven't figured out to do it yet since the youtube tutorials by segway are only for the G30 which has a different build than the G2. That being said I've had it for 1 year and have 3201km on it and works great as a commuter.

I'm 192cm and 103kg as it's bulking season for me in gym and it's perfect height for me on G2, don't need to bend upper back. I tried few rentals and some more expensive ones from co-workers and I couldn't live without suspension feature. Max G2 is probably the best bang for your buck for this situation.

I have the G2 and it is very nice and comfortable — my city has lots of pavements. I'm 6'6 and it is tall enough. I've never had any problems with the internal charger.

Segway is one of the biggest brands and is known for being reliable and quality, excluding their bottom-tier models. The Max G2 is the successor of the Max G30P, which has long been the go-to recommendation here for cheap but reliable. It's used by rental companies and can really take a beating.

I'd recommend a Segway especially if you are adverse to performing maintenance. Other brands will have you changing inner tubes, tightening nuts, replacing brakes. If anything happens to your Segway it'll be the electronics which is better than mechanical parts failing mid-ride.

The G2 is the first update in four years to the Segway max. The front and rear suspension, more powerful motor, better top speed of 22 vs 18.6 mph for the G30P — and the Max is fairly water resistant. I was caught in a crazy hard downpour where there were a few inches of water on the road and had to ride for 2 miles under those conditions.

It and the G30 are tanks. The G2's suspension does mean it's heavier and there's more stuff that can break, but it's not usually a problem. Ninebot have sold thousands upon thousands of G2s. Doubting it because of one video is like doubting a car because one dude somewhere had a radiator leak. No product is perfect and acceptable defect rates are a thing.

I own both G30 (no suspension) and G2 Max. For short trips / smooth roads, G30 is fine. If I am going anywhere and don't want my whole body to shake and ache, I take G2. To answer your question, it makes a world of difference. I had the Apollo City Pro for a while which has better suspension and G2 Max comes pretty close to comfort when compared to the big and heavy scooters with better suspension.

It's night and day coming from none at all. The max G2 is far from the most cushy suspension you'll come across, but it's still surprisingly good for what it is. It handles the vast majority of bumps and rocks with ease. You don't feel most of the road at all. The thing it struggles with is hard, sharp cracks while going fast more than anything.

I already have the G30 but I'd love to have a suspension that's not some aftermarket ugly addon. The only thing holding me back is the added weight... I have to carry it up stairs every time I use it.

This is a great deal, even better than the Apollo Go at $1,050 after coupons. Picking one up for the summer home. Easy to get to bars, way cheaper than a DUI.

The Max is like the F150 of vehicles — it's the best selling scooter, most reliable and has been beaten on in every way possible. Segway also makes and designs everything in house. Other scooter brands take models already available in China and rebrand them. Plus being so popular it's easy to find parts and mods.

I have a Model 3 too, I found myself lining the back seat with old bedsheets and slid it in there. Way easier than getting the right angle stuffing it in the trunk. Had I known I'd enjoy these things as much as I do, I probably would have considered a different EV.

I got plenty of scooters from the standard edition TurboAnt x7 (believe it or not one of my favorites due to how well it's been holding up — 5 years and counting). But in terms of cushioning I can say that having no suspension to having some, especially the Max G2, which is far superior in terms of quality than a lot of knock-off versions that offer simple suspensions. The G2 offers a great ride.

I have a Max G2, and to me, it's pretty comfortable. It's definitely not the softest suspension, but it is far better than other commuters I've tried out. For me, the only thing that would need improvement in my Max G2 is the front suspension — if I could make it a bit softer it would be a 10 out of 10 for comfort. But as it stands to me, it's more like a 7 out of 10 in suspension comfort.

I have the G2, my friend has the Niu Qi3 and would rather have the G2 because it's just better overall in terms of speed and comfortability with the suspension.

I agree with your review. The G2 is the best scooter I ever owned. By far. The ride quality and the stability on wet roads is amazing.

The battery is 36v, not 48v. That's also the reason performance falls off a cliff at 50% — they just cheaped out on battery and controller.

G2 has several more features than the G30P, but also a lot more problems. I cannot recommend it in its current state. Just scroll around the sub to find numerous occurrences of weird wheel/fender sounds and charging issues, and random parts breaking with almost 0 possibilities to find replacement.

G2 has problems, but at the same time it's a very popular scooter with a large community, so all known problems can be solved and all parts are cheap and available on AliExpress.

It's not worth $999. Other options start becoming available as you cross the $1k mark. At $799 it's a good scooter.

You think at this price range (about $1000) is the best featured scooter to get? Build quality, battery, speed, suspension, etc.

The one I got did 32 out of the box, I set it up with a new account with the US region and turned it up to 35 in the settings without an issue. You'll also want to change the start speed to 0 because who wants to have to push start their escooter? Overall it's decent — although it doesn't like hills. Like at all.

I took mine on a long trip after dropping my car off at a shop, which was about 17 miles, mostly non-stop at full throttle on a level trail. By the time I got home the battery was one red bar and it couldn't maintain walking speed on a level road. Weight seems to make a huge difference. I'm around 230lbs payload — I can't imagine how short it is for someone 265. They really need to provide a better set of test data.

Make sure you buy an original Segway 71W charger as a backup since internal ones are of shitty quality and will die sooner or later. Original max chargers are all out of stock where I live, and I got one for just 12 bucks from Aliexpress.

My son is about the same size. His G2 is great. We had to replace the rear tire recently, and the main charging port no longer works. But, it does have an AC adapter input, and he uses that to charge. Otherwise, he loves it. He is in Charleston, SC (very flat).

I have a G2 max with 1200km — it's a very comfortable ride and premium build quality, just some screws on the rear fender come loose.

Just make sure that you store it with the battery charged to about 80% and check it every month or so. The only way you'll hurt it by storing it for an extended amount of time is if the battery goes entirely flat. Lithium batteries don't like being run completely down and if they stay discharged for a significant amount of time, they will never hold a charge again.

Purchased the Max G2 through the iScoot website — took about 2 weeks to ship to Perth and it came unlocked to 32kmph (extendable to 35kmph in the app). I have updated the firmware v1.7.0 and the speed remained at 35kmph.

The comments on that video are endless — it seems everyone has too much play in their front wheel. Researching all this turned me away from the G2 and toward the G30P, as old as it is, not finding a better replacement in 2025 for the $500 range.

I have a G2 max. It rides over the bumpy grass in my neighborhood park like it's not even there. On bumpy roads at high speed I might need to bend my knees and go on tiptoe for a few seconds, but that's the exception. Compared to the rental scooters with solid tires and no suspension it's a dream.

When you get your G2, remove the bottom cover and rewire the charger so it's no longer pinched against the heatsink.

I own a G2 and weigh the same. I have never completely run out of charge but I have come close. I would say the range is probably a hair under 20 miles for me in sport mode, cruising at full speed.
