Summary

The Hiboy Max3 is a budget-friendly electric scooter that draws a mixed but mostly positive response from the Reddit community. Owners generally appreciate its solid build quality, 10-inch pneumatic tires, and real-world speeds around 18-19 mph, making it a capable daily commuter for lighter riders on relatively flat terrain. However, the scooter has attracted criticism for inconsistent specs — some units shipped as front-wheel drive despite being advertised as rear-wheel drive — and the Bluetooth app connectivity is widely reported as broken out of the box with no official fix. It sits in a competitive $380-$500 bracket and is best suited for riders under 180 lbs who want a sturdy, no-frills commuter and don't mind doing some maintenance research themselves.

Pros

  • Real-world speeds of 18-19 mph confirmed by owners with GPS, beating competitors like the Gotrax XR Elite which caps below 15 mph in practice
  • 10-inch wide pneumatic tires deliver a noticeably smoother ride over gravel, grass, and uneven pavement compared to solid-tire alternatives
  • Solid, heavy-duty build at 40 lbs that feels durable and confidence-inspiring on varied terrain
  • Handles moderate inclines at 15 mph for riders around 160-180 lbs, which is better than similarly priced competitors
  • Battery and controller are user-replaceable, and parts can be sourced from AliExpress or Hiboy directly for DIY repair
  • Hiboy customer support is responsive via email and has been known to send repair guides

Cons

  • Bluetooth app connectivity is broken for many users — the scooter doesn't show up as a Bluetooth device at all, and Hiboy has not released a firmware fix
  • No front brake on the Max3, which is a genuine safety concern flagged by experienced riders — front braking only possible with aftermarket drum brake installation
  • Spec inconsistency: some units shipped as front-wheel drive despite RWD advertising, causing hill performance issues that don't match marketing claims
  • Battery replacement is non-obvious — screws are hidden under rubber grommets and a front deck mat, and three screws stripped easily for at least one owner
  • At 40 lbs, it's significantly heavier than rivals like the Gotrax XR Elite (32 lbs), which matters for carrying up stairs or onto transit
  • Controllers burn out and the Hiboy OEM replacement is frequently out of stock, forcing owners to hunt for compatible third-party units on AliExpress

The Bluetooth App Is Dead on Arrival for Most Owners

Multiple Reddit threads confirm the Hiboy Max3 app simply fails to detect the scooter via Bluetooth — no pairing, no connection, no fix from Hiboy. Owners have collectively shrugged and moved on, but it's a feature that doesn't work.

Some Units Ship FWD Despite RWD Advertising — Hiboy Never Explained It

A Reddit thread uncovered that at least some Max3 units were shipped with a front-wheel drive motor configuration, contradicting the rear-wheel drive specs on Hiboy's website and in YouTube reviews. The leading theory: the Chinese manufacturer swapped components without notifying Hiboy.

For Flat-Terrain Commuters Under 180 lbs, It Still Gets the Job Done

Owners doing 4-5 mile commutes on mostly flat ground consistently report satisfaction. The wide tires, real 18-19 mph speeds, and solid frame make it a capable daily rider — as long as you're not expecting the app to work or hills to be easy.

I figure their Chinese generic manufacturer switched model without telling them and they didn't notice.

I'm of the opinion that a simple rugged metal design is better than a fancy, plastics-heavy design. For that reason I would go with the S2 over the MAX3. I also greatly prefer the solid tires as I want to avoid maintenance headaches.

I commute on the GoTrax XR elite. While it does the job for me (commuting about 2miles each way) it really struggles on any sort of incline. Even a very modest incline has me kicking to help it get up to/maintain speed.

Once you pull that center bolt the wheel should just pull out. No need to remove anything else just look and see if there is a spacer on the left or right and put it back the same way mine only has one on the left. Before I take something apart I always take pics just in case.

The Max 3 doesn't have a front brake, and is therefore inherently unsafe. In fact, I'm disappointed to see this from Hiboy, who have been in this business for a while now and really should know better. Only buy it if you're OK installing an aftermarket front wheel equipped with a drum brake.

Came across this post looking for the same answer. Just finished changing the battery. There are 6 hex screws (careful 3 of mine stripped) on the board where you stand (under rubber grommets?). And 1 more under the rubber mat you stand on by the handle. Lift the board and you'll see the battery. I didn't disconnect the break line either. Rest should be self explanatory.

All screws are on top of the board. Gotta pull out the rubber stoppers but most importantly there's one screw hidden at the front of the board and it's underneath the very front of the foot gel pad. Is that the tip of the triangle and you have to peel it back to access this one screw.

Go on AliExpress since 99.5% of scooters are made in China usually for parts like that sourcing it from a site like that I usually find best. Just look around on there if you can't find what your looking for. Find a seller that sells the same scooter you have, message them, tell them you need a replacement controller. And generally if they don't have the part they can direct you to someone that has it.

Your best bet is to take the original battery out, measure it, and buy another one that fits in the deck. You don't need one for that specific model - any 36V battery will do as long as it has at least the same capacity.

I have the max 3. Great scooter. 40lbs... A bit heavy but it's a solid build. Inflatable 10" and wide tires give it a great ride. I go consistently at 19mph. Up decent hills I'm going 15 and a little slower toward the top. Gravel and grass, easy peasy! For me it was a definite buy. And I'm not disappointed.

Yeah I still haven't been able to fix it, no solutions online and no response from the company... Oh well guess the next scooter I buy will have it and this one will suffice as it is.

Same here, just got my Max 3. Useful Power button functionality: 2 clicks lights on or off. 3 clicks cruise control on/off.

Hiboy has some decent customer service, I would send them an email they should get back to you within a few days. They probably have a guide or video for it.

I did see that it had those pictures, I was just confused because most YouTube reviews even had a rwd setup.
