Summary

The Hiboy S2 Lite Youth is a kids' electric scooter that attracts genuinely split opinions on Reddit, with actual owners often defending it far more strongly than the general sub consensus would suggest. Parents who bought it report multi-year daily use with minimal issues, citing impressive range for a youth scooter and a top speed that keeps up with older kids without being reckless. The dominant Reddit criticism stems from the broader Hiboy brand stigma — specifically stem-snapping issues on adult models — which tends to bleed into recommendations against the S2 Lite even though that specific flaw isn't reported for this youth version. At around $200-$300, it sits in a competitive bracket against the Segway Ninebot C2 Pro, and the core tradeoff is battery size versus build quality perception. Solid tires are a real limitation for rough surfaces, but for neighborhood riding with a light kid, the S2 Lite consistently overdelivers on range.

Pros

  • 180 Wh battery delivers real-world range of 14+ miles with a light child rider at 13-14 mph — significantly larger than the Segway C2 Pro's 100 Wh pack
  • Multiple parents report 2-3 years of daily use with zero major mechanical issues, suggesting solid durability for the youth segment
  • Top speed of 13-14 mph hits a practical sweet spot — fast enough that kids stay interested, slow enough that parents aren't panicking
  • Built-in lights praised for visibility, a feature many competing youth scooters skip at this price
  • Cruise control included, which reduces hand fatigue on longer neighborhood rides for younger riders
  • Lightweight enough (under 30 lbs) that kids can handle it independently without adult help to move or store it

Cons

  • Solid rubber tires deliver a noticeably rough ride on cracked pavement or gravel — no suspension means every bump is felt directly
  • Battery deep-discharge issue documented in at least one thread: if left sitting unused for months, the pack can drop to critically low voltage and require direct charging to revive
  • Hiboy brand carries reputation damage from adult model stem failures, making resale harder and creating friction when asking for community recommendations
  • Replacement batteries have historically gone out of stock for extended periods, leaving owners with a dead scooter and no easy fix
  • No Bluetooth or companion app — speed modes require manual button sequences rather than app-based controls competitors offer
  • Segway Ninebot C2 Pro offers adjustable handlebars for growing kids, a feature the S2 Lite lacks

The Parent Who Returned to Hiboy After Trying Segway

One Reddit user replaced her daughter's S2 Lite with a Segway Ninebot C9 after community pressure — and immediately regretted it. The Hiboy had better speed, better range, easier brakes for small hands, and her daughter had ridden it every single day for three years. The Segway sat unused.

180 Wh vs 100 Wh: The Battery Gap Nobody Talks About

The Segway C2 Pro wins on brand perception and build quality, but its battery is nearly half the size of the S2 Lite's. For parents prioritizing range on longer neighborhood rides, the Hiboy's spec sheet wins even if its Reddit reputation doesn't.

Brand Reputation Is Killing a Scooter That Actually Works

The stem-snapping criticism that follows Hiboy everywhere comes from adult commuter models, not the S2 Lite. Multiple threads show users conflating the two, leading parents away from a youth scooter with years of proven reliability based on problems that don't apply to it.

I noticed a trend that every brand you could ask about, someone here would tell you how garbage it is. You could even find posts about how garbage the brand is or even the exact scooter.

Because the Ninebot G30 Max was such a tank, people automatically point to Ninebot (assuming they mean the Max) as an example of quality and a recommended entry level scooter. Not all Ninebot scooters are at the same quality as the Max, far from it, in fact.

No one says to buy that model scooter. Never even heard of it. The lowest end Segway people recommend is the ninebot max.

After sitting for a while my kids tried to ride the scooter. Dash light turned on. Quick beep then off again. It wouldn't charge on the regular charge port. Charger would just instantly go green. I popped the bottom cover off and unplugged the battery. Tested the voltage and it was down to 17v. I grabbed some alligator clips and used the oem charger and went direct to the battery. Red light on charger showed it was charging again.

Your comparing the $180 zing to $300-350 hiboy. People complain when an adult uses hiboy due to fracturing stem. Children likely to not have issues with that.

There are tons of products in the market right now, and it's cool to get the subreddit overall thoughts, but we aren't you or your daughter. At the end of the day, you're blaming a recommendation given that you acted on that wound up not meeting your expectation.

She rode her Hiboy S2 Lite every single day for three years. Really upset I made this decision. I had zero problems with the Hiboy for three years, yet I let folks here convince me I shouldn't buy that brand. Now I'm stuck with this scooter she won't even use.

Yes, the S2 Lite is a small scooter for kids. My son started riding it when he was 5. It has a 180 Wh battery, so a 50 pound rider can go 20+ miles at 13 mph with cruise control - it's very impressive for a kid's electric scooter! That being said, I recommend the Ninebot C2 Pro as a better option for kids. Its build quality is better and the adjustable handlebars make it comfortable for shorter and taller kids. Biggest downside of the C2 Pro is the smaller battery (100 Wh), so its range is about half.

I use a hiboy ks4 pro as a backup scooter. The only reason I don't ride it as a primary scooter is because you feel every little bump while riding it. Of course, that's the trade off for a solid tire scooter that lacks suspension. It's a year old now and has roughly 1.5k miles on it. Other than changing the brake pads, I haven't had to do any maintenance on it whatsoever. It's the lowest maintenance scooter I've owned. Personally, I have nothing but good things to say about the brand.

Unfortunately, it's hard to go by brand anymore. Every brand has that one model that is a lemon and ruins the entire name. Both Segway and every other brand have this issue. That's why at a certain point you basically have to look at the reviews for a specific model and not just brand name.

Honestly man, hiboy's not bad at all, especially the s2 max. I got one a while back and it's been super chill for commuting nothing fancy but it gets the job done. Good range, comfy ride, and doesn't feel too cheap. Sure it's not a segway or some premium setup, but for the price, it's kinda hard to complain. Just make sure to tighten stuff now and then, they're not perfect but def decent for the money.

Ended up going with the Hiboy S2 Max. The price was right and figured it would be a good starting point. Only put a couple miles on it so far but for what I paid for it I'm quite happy so far.

Hiboy scooters suck, get a ninebot. Strongly suggest ninebot teen and kids scooters (ninebot e2 is a good option).

I can't imagine anyone here recommending a Zing scooter. The Ninebot Max is great, as is the P100S and GT series. Those are the only ones I've ever recommended. The rest of them are very mediocre, or downright awful.

Make sure to get her a helmet as well for whatever scooter you choose, make sure she picks it herself so she actually feels comfortable with it and likes it. I would try to get something waterproof because I don't think many kids do maintenance or think about waterproofing but might still need to get home when it rains. Also limit the scooter to 20km/h till she learns.

C2 Pro is a nice scooter but its battery is only 100 Wh. If you're looking for more range, Hiboy S2 Lite is about the same size with a 180 Wh battery.

I just recently had mine apart too due to something similar and I ended up having to balance the cells. One set was about 1.2v off from the others.

I've been using my Hiboy pro since February for commuting and it's worked wonders for me. I've had three falls my entire time riding it which were due to my fault for turning too sharply but I've saved tons of money so it's worth it for me.

I keep telling y'all to stop listening to these people. Everyone here expects you to spend thousands on a rig. If it's not an Apollo, Segway, (insert any ridiculously priced popular brand here) it's garbage. It's the same way on the e-bike groups. I'm sorry that you were misled.

I also thought it was a good idea to buy my 8yo son a child scooter and it was not. First off, these don't have any suspensions. Then, kids that age can not pay attention as much as an older kid would on the road.

It says for teens. Your 9 year old is not a teen. There are kids scooters designed for under 12.

This one doesn't have Bluetooth or use the app. Its supposed to unlock after a few miles, so I guess it did. We use the highest setting. Doing the throttle brake unlock trick didn't do anything.

I bought a hiboy S2 lite for my 10 year old daughter and it was perfect for starting out. The lights are great for visibility, it had a decent (but not TOO wild) top speed of 14 mph, and with her size we were able to go about 14 miles with room to spare. Only downside was the hard rubber tires make the ride a bit rough. We've had it a year and she's dropped it a few times bailing off. Still works great, no complaints!

I have 3 scooters one is a segway es4 the other is a Niu Kqi3 Pro and the 3rd is a hiboy s2 max the hiboy actually has the best range out of all 3 of my scooters and it's very well built for the price point. People hate on hiboy because of a specific model that the stem was defective on but the s2 max has been a great scooter. I'd actually rate the segway as the lowest quality out of the 3 I own.

If you want them to have a great first experience on a scooter get them a Segway. Hiboy will end with the child in tears.

I have both a Segway and hiboy (adult versions). Both are quality and comparable, so I think in this case it just comes down to which one is cheaper. I think if I had to buy another, I'd get a hiboy.

I got a Hiboy S2R plus as my first scooter and it's been fine so far but I have seen people on this sub post their Hiboy with a broken stem so I keep an eye on my stem for any small fractures.

For our kid, we landed on the Hiboy S2 Lite because it had good range, solid braking, and was still under 30 lbs.

The batteries are back in stock! Installing should be very simple. Note: we had multiple Hiboy S2 Lites in our shop at the same time with battery issues. A rider came back the next day and said they were in stock! Very surprising as it doesn't usually happen so soon.

Specifically the Hiboy S2 pro has a stem that can snap. At least that's what we've seen a handful of times in this community.

See if you can return it. This page is basically a Segway advertising space at this point, some of the people on here are like Apple or Tesla fanboys for Segway. With that said, maybe look for an alternative to Hiboy in the future. They do have a reputation for stems snapping; it's good that you haven't had any issues yet but probably better safe than sorry.

Everyone's experience is different. I have a Ninebot Max and love it. Ride it almost every single day and have had zero issues. All scooters are going to slow down going up hills unless you're spending serious money.
