Summary

The Hiboy S2 Pro is a budget electric scooter that splits the Reddit community almost down the middle — some owners log over 1,000 miles without incident, while others have had the stem snap clean off mid-ride at speed. It targets budget-conscious first-time riders and short-distance commuters who want solid tires to avoid flats, a decent range for the price, and a relatively compact form factor. The 500W motor handles flat terrain confidently, cruise control is a genuine comfort feature, and many riders report satisfying daily use for 5–15 mile commutes. That said, the r/ElectricScooters community is largely negative on Hiboy as a brand, consistently flagging the stem failure as a documented and recurring safety hazard rather than an isolated defect. Riders who end up happy with the S2 Pro tend to acknowledge they either got lucky with quality control or were riding on smooth terrain that didn't stress the frame.

Pros

  • 500W motor handles flat-to-moderate terrain well — riders at 200–260 lbs report consistent performance with no motor strain on level ground
  • Solid tires eliminate the risk of flats entirely, which is a meaningful advantage for daily commuters who can't afford downtime
  • Real-world range lands around 20–27 miles at moderate speeds for lighter riders (under 170 lbs) on flat ground, which outperforms similarly priced competitors
  • Cruise control is a standout comfort feature at this price point, appreciated by commuters doing 20–30 minute rides
  • Some owners report 1,000+ miles of durable use with zero structural issues, suggesting solid QC is possible if you get a good unit
  • Hiboy's customer service has occasionally replaced defective units entirely, even out of warranty, which softened some negative experiences

Cons

  • Stem snapping is a documented, recurring safety failure — multiple Reddit threads show the frame breaking near the weld during normal riding, not just abuse, with incidents reported on riders as light as 60 lbs
  • Solid tires with no front suspension create a brutally rough ride on imperfect roads; the vibration is severe enough that some users pursued aftermarket suspension mods just to make it tolerable
  • Real-world range drops significantly with hills, heavier riders, or higher speeds — users over 200 lbs on hilly terrain report getting well under half the advertised range
  • The 220 lb official weight limit is low for a scooter in this category, and the thin die-cast frame construction gives little margin for stress from road vibration or rider weight over time
  • Alternatives like the Ninebot G30LP and NIU KQi2 Pro are consistently recommended over the S2 Pro by the r/ElectricScooters community for better long-term reliability in the same price bracket
  • The Xiaomi M365 clone design means Hiboy benefits from the form factor but skimps on materials — the stem uses single-wall hollow aluminum that multiple engineers in threads flagged as structurally insufficient

The Stem That Keeps Snapping

The Hiboy S2 Pro's most discussed feature on Reddit isn't its range or speed — it's the stem failure. Threads document the frame breaking mid-ride during normal use, affecting riders from 60 lbs to 200 lbs, and Hiboy has never issued a formal recall or public acknowledgment despite years of reports.

A Budget Scooter the Sub Loves to Hate

r/ElectricScooters has a well-known bias against Hiboy, but the hate isn't entirely unfounded. Owners who love their S2 Pro often admit they got a good unit by luck — and users who upgrade to Ninebot or Apollo consistently say they wish they'd started there.

Solid Tires: Feature or Flaw?

The S2 Pro's solid tires are simultaneously its main selling point and its biggest structural liability. Riders love never dealing with flats, but experts in the threads point out that solid tires transmit more vibration directly into the frame — which may accelerate the metal fatigue that leads to stem snaps.

That's some thin fucking aluminum.

Hiboy is a Chinese budget brand, they are cheap Xiaomi clones and they will never have the same quality as the originals. Problems like this are being reported here since Hiboy hit the market. But they seem to invest a lot in marketing and image campaigns instead of the quality of their scooters, cause for some weird reason they are very popular here on this sub.

Shocked that this is still happening to the S2 Pro. They claimed it was fixed but clearly it isn't.

Well that's a drag to hear... for both you and me. I bought a Hiboy S2 Pro a month ago. Kind of surprised to see this. It doesn't even look like it broke at the weld and they seem well put together.

If you can return it do so! I cannot stress enough these scooters are trash and dangerous, there has been at least 10 on here with this same fate. My daughter's did this same thing and she was under 100 pounds at the time.

Yeah just snapped from regular riding. Never tossed or jumped with it out of fear of something like this happening, I guess it was inevitable. Only 2 years in for me when this happened. I'm about 150-160 lbs, so a little on the lighter side. Maybe just metal fatigue is my guess but they definitely lost me as a customer.

I originally committed to work 5 days a week by car, now I do every day by scooter unless it's pouring out. 7.5 miles in terrible city roads but I love every commute.

The Apollo Ghost is nuts, I can absolutely vouch for it. Immaculate build quality and pure thrills.

People talk trash about GoTrax, but the old GXL line (and XR) have some of the best, strongest folding mechanisms out there, and sturdy tiller. Over 8k miles on mine and still going. Never even have to tighten any bolts. That old Xiaomi frame design that HiBoy uses (and lots of others) has always been a piece of garbage. And those solid tires SUCK!

This sub has a hate boner for hiboy. Eff em. My little S2 pro has been a soldier and has literally been the only thing standing between me and oblivion. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.

I don't own a S2 but I own the S2 pro and love that scooter! Probably put over 1k miles on mine and still going strong with great battery life. Only negative is no water resistance so for commuting it could be a good idea to take that into consideration depending on the weather where you live.

Good to know the quality of these scooters has remained the same since I had one 2 years ago. Less than a couple weeks after I got the scooter, I was on my way home from work and the throttle wasn't going all the way down. I heard a snap and after that the throttle fully stopped working. I contacted their customer service and my god it's almost non-existent.

Ninebot and Xiaomi for commuter scooters only. Tried and tested. Positively, fuck the rest of the clones.

When you look through the review images on Amazon you will find at least 5 different broken stems. You can also search on here, there were at least 2 broken stem posts in the past year. Maybe Hiboy did something to fix it in future versions, or the riders were just abusing their scooters, impossible to know, but the solid tires are not doing the scooter frame any favors.

I generally don't want to pee on others' parades when they are excited about buying one of these so I typically follow the 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all' rule. But yeah, this is why I recommend sticking with brands with an established reputation for build quality.

I got this scooter about 3 weeks ago. I ride it 11 miles getting to work, charge it all day, then ride it the 11 miles back home. It's a great scooter, I have no issue with it at all. It feels solid and confident going down the road at a steady 20ish mph. Cruise control is cool. I've just turned 51 years old and getting to and coming from work are the best parts of my day.

My son's broke in the EXACT same spot, right next to the weld. He is 60 lbs, had his scooter for exactly 13 months when it happened. He's 8 and I can assure you he was not hitting jumps or curbs. We stored it for 5 months over the winter so he had a little over 6 riding months on it. Their warranty is 12 months. They are crap.

I've had mine for 1.5 years and have had zero issues. When it dies, I will likely get another.

With that budget I'd get a Ninebot G30 honestly.

I've owned one for about a year, and I have no complaints. I use it purely for recreation but have taken it on several 10-15 mile joy rides in the city. It feels solid and stable, I've had it up to 25 coasting down a hill and it was quite comfortable. I landed on this one due to the top speed/range/cost factors and it's lived up to it. Just 'cheap' enough to avoid the next tier of models but still 'fast' enough to feel a bit zippy and more than just an economy ride.

I own a Hiboy S2 pro and no problems so far. I did have to loosen up the rear suspension and change the screws that hold the handle bar. My suggestion is spend a little more and get something with more speed and range. I enjoy my scooter but would like to upgrade eventually.

I rode the shit out of my S2 pro. I would regularly jump off curbs and ride in heavy rain where it had no business being. People said they will snap at the stem like butter but I never had that happen being 200lbs. Held up fine aside from the rear suspension needing to be replaced due to the abuse and neglect.

I've been using the max pro for almost a year now, no issues yet, and I've put it through the wringer. This thing has held up against my fat ass at 230lbs, even taken it practically off road over bumpy terrain and ridden it multiple times to work, job interviews, and back home with still a little battery remaining. About 12-14 miles is the maximum I get on the highest speed mode, which is wild considering my weight.

I bought a Hiboy S2 Pro for $290 used from offerup, it's actually pretty good for a budget scooter, though there are some drawbacks. One issue is the solid tires and lack of front suspension, the ride will tend to get bumpy when the roads get bad. Another issue is the infamous stem snapping issue that some people have experienced with their scooters.

I heard they fixed the stem snapping issue in late Autumn of 2022 with better reinforced aluminum. Not heard about those snapping issues since that. Just watch out that they don't sell the older S2 version that had that problem.

I've got a HiBoy KS4 Pro which is basically the same thing as the S2 Pro, and I think it's great. The ride is fine, I like that it has solid tires so I don't have to deal with flat tires, and I weigh 230 pounds and it gets me up modest hills without too much problem. You at 145 pounds should be able to do great on hills with it.

The hate for anything not Ninebot or an over $2,000 scooter on this sub is very weird, let me tell you. I first asked the sub about the Gotrax G4 and despite the overwhelming amount of positive reviews on YouTube, online, and on Amazon this sub told me they were crap. So I got the Ninebot G30LP and had the thing barely less than a day and am sending it back to Amazon.

It's a good scooter. I've got well over 1000 miles on mine and it's holding up just fine. I've thrashed it around quite a bit, too. No crashes though!

I have an S2 pro. Excellent range — I've driven mine 27 miles on a single charge (multiple trips, not one continuous trip) on fairly flat ground at around 14mph average speed. I weigh 165lbs. Top speed hits 18mph on flat surface and fully charged. Wish it was faster, but at this price point there aren't many scooters going 20mph+. Solid tires are a plus for me bc I never want to deal with a flat but you absolutely give up ride comfort with them.

I have one. It totally rocks. I wear the battery out every day. All kinds of terrain. I think scooters in general just pad the ratings slightly. I think I get 20% less than what they claim across the board, and people say that's typical. I'm thoroughly impressed for the money. It takes everything.

I had the Hiboy S2 Pro myself, it never snapped on me but the anxiety of it made it sketchy to ride. If you look on Amazon there's now plenty of scooters with the same stats as the Hiboy, cheaper, stronger frames, and even with turn signals.

Hiboy scooters are only worth buying with pneumatic tires. There's a growing amount of evidence that suggests material fatigue induced by the shock and vibration of unsprung solid tires is a big part of what causes the stem snaps that have already been mentioned.

I've had my Hiboy S2 Pro since November 2020. No problems. My only recommendation is maybe think about front suspension for your scooter as well.

That scooter is considered one of the top scooters to avoid. It's a Xiaomi M365 knockoff with questionable build quality. For your use case try getting a deal or used Ninebot Max G30 — it's one of the most reliable scooters, very basic, nothing fancy.

This was my first scooter! It's a surprisingly solid scoot, I weigh about 150 and I could hit 20 mph pretty easily. The suspension (or lack of) wore on me eventually and I got a TW Swift. For the price though it's a great option!

I have the same model and have ridden it off and on since October. I ride to work round trip about 5.5 miles. It's been cooler so I have to charge once every three days. I sometimes bring my charger to work on the third day just in case.
