Summary

The Jetson Sphere is a budget-friendly hoverboard sold at major retailers like Target, popular with kids and casual riders. Reddit sentiment skews negative, with most discussions centered on battery failures, charging issues, and difficulty sourcing replacement parts. The board works fine out of the box for many users, and the JetKart attachment adds appeal, but longevity is a serious concern — batteries seem to degrade or die within 1-2 years. Jetson's official support presence on Reddit is active but mostly redirects users to out-of-warranty options with little practical help.

Pros

  • Affordable entry-level price point — new units available around $99, making it accessible for kids or casual use
  • Compatible with the JetKart attachment, which expands the riding experience significantly
  • Works well out of the box for most users during the initial ownership period
  • Jetson has an active Reddit support presence that responds to issues quickly
  • Lightweight and compact design makes it easy to store and transport

Cons

  • Battery lifespan is a major issue — multiple users report dead batteries within 1-2 years, with no official replacement sold by Jetson
  • Replacement battery (36V, 2.0Ah, model EL-1001S-01) is extremely hard to find from third-party sources, leaving owners with an unusable unit
  • Repair cost approaches or exceeds the price of a new unit — users report spending $75+ on repairs for a board that costs ~$99 new
  • 4-blink error codes indicating motor/wheel failure are common, and replacement wheels cost roughly half the price of a new board (~$50)
  • JetKart attachment appears to accelerate battery issues, with boards dying mid-ride after the kart is added
  • Calibration problems are frequently reported, and Jetson's recalibration steps don't always resolve them

Battery Dies in 1-2 Years and You Can't Replace It

The most common complaint on Reddit: the Sphere's battery fails within a couple of years, and Jetson doesn't sell replacement packs. Users are left trying to DIY repairs by swapping individual 18650 cells — a difficult fix for most people.

Is a $99 Hoverboard Worth It If It's Disposable?

At ~$99, the Jetson Sphere looks like a deal — but Reddit users point out that repair costs can match or exceed the purchase price, and the lack of serviceable parts means most units end up in the trash when something breaks.

The JetKart Attachment May Be Killing Your Battery Faster

Several users noticed that adding the JetKart accessory seems to trigger earlier battery shutdowns — even on fully charged boards. It's an unexpected downside for parents who bought the kart as an upgrade.

My son's Jetson sphere quit working a while back, finally got around to taking a look. After turning on after resetting, when putting pressure on the pad opposite the buttons, there is a constant tone and a repeating pattern of 4 short blinks followed by a long blink. The motor on the side of the buttons appears to work, but the opposite side does not. Replacement wheels appear to cost about $50 or around half the cost of a new unit. Has anyone had luck repairing these at lower cost? I'm assuming I need a new wheel/motor...

Unfortunately I couldn't find a replacement. 😕 Tried eBay, aliexpress, amazon, etc. Ended up taking apart the pack, and found 4 of the 10 18650s were dead-ish (they were at like 1 volt or something). I will try to replace them when I find the time. You need quite a bit of motivation, that pack really isn't that easy to repair (at least for my skill level...), but I think it's very doable.

Did you buy a replacement battery? Running into the same issue. If you did and have a recommendation that worked I would appreciate it!

Bought a Hoverboard with seat attachment for my son in Dec 22, charger was dead out of the box. My daughter has one so we dragged our feet in getting a replacement, waited too long and out of warranty. Now the battery is completely dead and there is no suitable replacement to fit in the compartment needed so now it's pretty much worthless. Jetson doesn't sell battery packs and the 36v packs online do not fit. I'm going to spend close to $75 to repair, you can buy a new one for $99. Super frustrating on the lack of replacement options, especially since batteries, no matter how good, are a consumable.

My name is Sivasankar, and I bought a hoverboard 2 years ago at a Target store. I bought a Jetson sphere hoverboard and the color is teal. 6 months ago, the hoverboard did not charge and no matter how much time I charge the hoverboard, the hoverboard still won't turn on. We tried charging the hoverboard yesterday and today but still, we had no luck. But, whenever I charge the hoverboard and turn it on, it beeps and turns on lighting up. As soon as I unplug the hoverboard, it turns off.

We got our kids the Jetson Sphere hoverboard a few years back and for Christmas this year got the JetKart attachment for it. Hoverboard has worked fine up until then and for the first few weeks with the JetKart. However it started dying while the kids were riding it and wouldn't turn back on unless it was plugged in. Initially thought it just needed to be charged but this will happen when the board is fully charged and only ridden for a couple of minutes. Once plugged back in, the lights show a full charge and it works fine again for a few minutes.

So, just to put a disclaimer at the start am terrible at projects in general. 95% of the year i acknowledge i have no business on building or making anything. But once a year, Youtube convinces me how cool something is, and it'll be SOO easy... This year it was making things driveable. From parts harvested from old hoverboards and scooters. I ended up getting a really nice deal on 2 hoverboards with the go kart add-on for both of them.

We do not sell replacement batteries for the Sphere Hoverboard here at Jetson, as it's considered an internal part that can prove tricky and sometimes dangerous to self-repair/replace (and it will void your warranty if you still have one in doing so). However, the Sphere's battery specs are 36V, 2.0Ah Lithium-Ion, and you may find a compatible replacement through a Google shopping search.
