Summary

The Joyor X5S is a budget-friendly electric scooter that has carved out a small but loyal following among urban commuters looking for decent range and solid performance under $700. Reddit sentiment is mixed — owners who bought directly from Joyor's website generally report a satisfying ride with top speeds up to 23-24mph and range around 15-20 miles in real-world use, while Amazon buyers frequently get a speed-capped version limited to 15mph that requires a motor controller swap to unlock. Build quality is passable for the price range, but the brand's customer service is widely criticized as unresponsive, and the scooter's long-term repairability is a genuine concern — replacement parts are hard to source and compatibility is unclear even through official channels. It's a scooter that works well enough when it works, but falls apart as a value proposition the moment something goes wrong.

Pros

  • Real-world top speed of 22-24mph for heavier riders (215-226lbs) when purchased directly from Joyor's site, making it competitive with pricier commuter scooters
  • 10-inch pneumatic tires provide a noticeably smoother and more comfortable ride compared to smaller-wheeled alternatives in the same price range
  • Reported range of 15-20 real-world miles under conservative riding (10-13mph), with one owner hitting 19.4 miles at 226lbs
  • Solid build quality out of the box — multiple owners noted better-than-expected construction and useful included accessories like a phone holder, carry bag, and front pouch
  • At least one owner accumulated 934km (580+ miles) with no flat tires and minimal issues, suggesting the platform can be durable with normal use
  • Lightweight at approximately 33lbs, making it easier to carry than heavier performance scooters in its speed class

Cons

  • Amazon units are hard-capped at 15mph and require a full motor controller replacement to unlock — not a settings tweak, making the purchase channel a critical decision
  • Customer service is effectively non-existent — multiple users reported no response to emails for weeks, and at least one user described a parts order where Joyor took payment and then demanded additional money
  • Replacement parts are difficult to source and battery compatibility is unclear even on Joyor's own site, making long-term ownership a gamble if a major component fails
  • Speed limiter removal on 2022 European models is broken — the commonly cited blue wire cut causes an engine error rather than unlocking speed, leaving owners with no reliable workaround
  • For the same repair/replacement cost as a failed battery, a refurbished Ninebot Max G30P (~$365) offers better reliability and brand support, undermining the X5S's value argument
  • Firmware and display settings are poorly documented — one user bricked their display by following the included manual's incorrect P-setting instructions, with no factory reset option available

The Amazon Version Is a Different Scooter

Reddit owners are clear: buying the X5S on Amazon gets you a 15mph-capped unit that requires a motor controller swap to unlock full speed. Buy direct from Joyor's site or expect to either live with the limit or spend extra to fix it.

Good Scooter, Terrible Safety Net

When the X5S runs, owners are mostly happy. When something breaks, you're on your own — unresponsive support, unclear parts compatibility, and a firmware you can accidentally brick by following the manual make this a high-risk buy for anyone who can't DIY their way out of problems.

Heavier Riders Are Pleasantly Surprised

Unlike budget scooters that struggle with larger riders, multiple users over 200lbs report the X5S holding 22-24mph and pushing 15-19 miles of real range — performance that punches above its price class for commuters who've been burned by underpowered alternatives.

It's a $600 scooter new and you will pay at least half that for a battery with no guarantee that the battery is the only faulty component. And it's not a very good scooter. You could buy a Ninebot Max G30P refurbished for $365 and have a much more reliable scooter for about the same price as just the battery.

I'd buy a brand new scooter.. pretty much garbage after sitting for 3 years.

That screw is a Grubscrew. It goes into the back of the voltage meter shown in the picture. It is a way to show the exact voltage of the battery so you can more accurately gauge the percentage left.

I got this exact model for like 1 year and a half and haven't got any tire flat and barely no issues. It has 934km right now. The motor is a beast and I reached a top speed of almost 40km/h. Only bad thing is some noise here and there like the Xiaomi (like creaks) but nothing else, it is very comfortable to ride (thanks 10" tires), and changed the brakes for hydraulic ones. It is ugly as fuck and the thing that covers the deck is the worst thing ever.

It's a surprising scooter. I was out on it today and managed to get 15 miles with 3 bars left. I found that riding it at 10-13mph conserves a ton of battery and so does utilizing freewheel strategy (such as downhill, rolling forward, etc).

Holy cow. That...should not even be a possible setting. This is not your fault. I blame the software engineer that allowed this to happen in the first place.

I'm also curious about the X5S since you can supposedly just snip the blue wire and it'll go 25-28 MPH. But I also like front brakes and it does not have that.

I can tell you from experience that the acceleration on the X5S is great. Top speed is 22-24mph with me as a 226lb rider. Highest range I've gotten on it was 19.4 miles. Sounds like this scooter fits your needs just fine.

It is indeed very comfortable to ride, and a good estimate for actual range is to divide the stated range in half.

Chinese ones usually don't go through QA, though some sellers are better than others and will at least try not to leave screws flying about. If yours has a lid to the deck, open it up and have a nice look-see in there. Make sure the battery is padded and well stuck in place, there are no sharp protrusions anywhere near it, and maybe ziptie the inevitable spaghetti wiring.

The integrated lock will only deter honest people. I have a feeling it would be trivial to cut, probably wouldn't even need bolt cutters. If someone does manage to power it up and doesn't input the lock code properly it beeps, flashes the lights and the hub drive provides resistance. A mini ulock is the safest approach.

I'm a small fella at less than 140 pounds. The scooter will do the advertised 18MPH on flats, no problem. I do ride in San Francisco and when I go up hills, it sometimes won't make it up certain blocks. This is because of the smallish battery and bigger wheels/tires requiring more torque to spin them.

Titan is as OEM as you can get for the Zero chassis. Very very good customer service and easy purchasing experience from them.

One of the Joyor scooters was going to be my first scoot but they didn't ship in time for Christmas.

I wanted a Joyor A3 because I was only commuting 2.5ks to work. I got a Xiaomi Pro 2 instead because the store I ordered from had one in stock.

I received my x5s yesterday, and I love it, except 2 things, first of all, the bar handles wobble, and the speed is 15mph max.

Apparently if you order from Amazon its capped at 15mph, ordering direct from their site it goes 23.6mph, I guess they cap it on Amazon for some legal reason. I've read you have to replace the motor controller so its not a simple setting you can change.

I urge you, for your own good, to steer clear of Joyor! Their products are nothing but a disaster, and their so-called customer service team is a bunch of scammers. My rear fender broke almost instantly, and the screws came loose, leading to a terrifying accident that could have been catastrophic. This is not just a design flaw—it's a serious safety issue!

An update; I tried cutting the blue wire, but the outcome was a dead scooter. Guides in reviews are not correct for newer / European 2022 model.

I think the simplest way to get past the speed limiter is to buy it direct from Joyor. The X5(S) direct from them does 23.6 MPH and goes 36.9 miles.

Finally got it! Setup was super easy and it came with a set of Allen wrenches, a carry bag, cell phone holder and front handle bar bag. Charged to 100% and took on a great 20 mile ride. It is definitely limited to 15mph for accelerating but I believe that helps the range be where it is.

A little late to the party but I've owned one for a year and couldn't be happier. It only weighs 33lbs so it's easy to lug around. Downsides: brakes are really shit and you better know how to ride in snowboard style so you can step/run off if necessary. Also, uphill performance sucks. Otherwise it's been solid and the perfect scooter for me here in Spain.

Not sure about the plastic and screw, but the key and screen is your ignition and voltmeter. Since your scooter is 48V it should be 100% at 54.6V, and around 0% at 39V. The display/throttle combo should also tell you your percentage and voltage, but the voltmeter will be more accurate and is how I always judged battery on my scooter.

You need to change the motor controller to unlock the speed.

Unfortunately a power flush won't actually reset the system, they're designed with a teensy bit of onboard memory. Which makes all of the display settings localised to the display. You're going to be better off figuring out how to reflash the chip with the original firmware.

I was warned by Joyor's Europe team that the China site isn't legit. I'd suggest a Zero8 from Rev Rides.

I've heard the Europe and Chinese sites are in a political battle over who is the legitimate official site. Great prices though.

I assume the little plastic piece is something that broke off in shipping. A little nervous about the screw just lying around. As a bonus all 4 Allen keys they included were the wrong size, thankfully I had one that worked.

In the parameter menu I have a parameter 99 and a parameter d0. I don't think this scooter went through QA, hopefully it works!

Yes the easiest way is to follow the instructions in the reviews on the Amazon listing for that scooter. If I remember correctly it is the little light blue wire that runs down the looming on the front stem.

I've got myself a brand new Joyor F7+ yesterday. Have you had any luck with the limiter removal? My wiring looks kinda like the same, no luck with the blue wire cutting? I bought mine in Finland so European model also.

The voltmeter is loose so that before your first ride you would tighten it at an angle that suits you ergonomically.
