Summary

The Kaabo Mantis 8 Pro is a mid-range dual-motor electric scooter that earns genuine praise from commuters and enthusiasts who prioritize build quality and solid real-world performance over top speed. Reddit sentiment is cautiously positive — owners appreciate the premium feel, strong torque, and capable dual-motor setup, but recurring concerns about the 8-inch tires, limited waterproofing, and noise from the Minimotors controller keep it from being a crowd favorite. It sits in a competitive price bracket where alternatives like the Mantis 10 or Blade 10 offer more for similar money, making value the most debated aspect. That said, riders on smooth roads with a defined commute distance tend to be satisfied, while those expecting versatility for rough terrain or heavy rain often come away disappointed.

Pros

  • Premium build quality that feels closer to a proper motor vehicle than budget scooters — riders upgrading from entry-level models like Xiaomi or Glion consistently describe a significant quality jump
  • Dual 800W motors deliver strong torque for acceleration and hill climbing, handling combined weights up to 140kg in real-world testing
  • Minimotors Eye3 controller provides smooth, responsive throttle with minimal dead zone compared to competitors — praised by users familiar with multiple throttle systems
  • Wide 8-inch tires offer better stability than narrow alternatives, and paired with dual suspension the ride is manageable on smooth urban roads
  • IPX5 rating on newer versions provides basic weather resistance adequate for typical commuting conditions with some additional DIY sealing
  • Solid stem stability is a standout feature — multiple owners specifically highlight the lack of wobble as a confidence-inspiring trait during high-speed riding

Cons

  • 8-inch tires are a hard limitation — multiple Reddit users warn they make potholes and rough pavement genuinely hazardous, with several recommending 10-inch minimum for anything other than smooth roads
  • Top speed caps around 25mph with real-world averages dropping to 22-23mph at 50% battery, which disappointed buyers who expected consistent performance throughout the charge
  • No speed modification path — the Mantis 8 runs near its hardware ceiling, so riders wanting more speed have to buy a different scooter entirely, not just swap parts
  • Motor noise under load is a known quirk of the Minimotors controller — the whining sound at low-to-mid speeds bothers some owners, especially where 20km/h is the legal limit
  • Waterproofing requires DIY intervention beyond stock — the charging port and underdeck have documented water ingress issues, and the stock mudguard is considered inadequate for wet conditions
  • Tubed tires lead to frequent flats for high-mileage riders — one owner reported replacing tubes around 10 times in a single season before switching to a different scooter

Front Motor Died After 13km — Is Early Failure a Pattern?

At least one buyer reported the front motor failing on only their second ride, still waiting on warranty resolution. While isolated, it highlights that quality control isn't bulletproof despite the premium positioning.

The Mantis 10 Is $100 More and Reddit Says Get That Instead

The recommendation to step up to the Mantis 10 or Blade 10 comes up constantly in advice threads. The 8's 8-inch tires and speed ceiling make it harder to justify when the upgrade path is that close in price.

One Rider Sold It After a Year — Not Because It Broke, But Because It Was Too Fun to Be Safe

A long-term owner who clocked significant miles sold the Mantis 8 citing safety concerns, not mechanical failure. The scooter's performance envelope apparently made it feel too tempting to push limits in urban traffic.

If you need something faster, your best bet is to return it and buy something faster. The only scooters that are reasonably moddable to go faster are ones that have been specifically limited by the manufacturer, and the Mantis isn't one of them. Otherwise, higher top speed requires a new, higher voltage battery.

25mph is the max speed. Expect to hit that only early in the ride. 22-23mph is more likely to be the average around 50% battery. The Mantis 10 Lite stays over 25mph the entire time and the max speed is 31mph. I recommend the 10 over the 8 in general. It's only $100 more.

Spot on advice. If you need something faster, return it and get something faster rather than trying to mod it.

I just rode this scooter for full charge of around 17 miles of range. All riding at highest mode, with dual on mostly for uphill only. Ride had medium amount of hills. Suspension was ok, but after riding for around 2 hours, my body feels completely beat. Mainly lower back and legs. Bit of a surprise how tired I am after this ride. Extremely fun though.

Nope. I sold for three reasons: 1) I wasn't using it enough. I prefer exercise so biking or walking. 2) safety 3) I hated flat tires.

The mantis 8 has always been a fairly overpriced for what you get. Honestly your best bet is the blade 10. Yes technically you can do a patch job on a tubeless tire but chances are you're going to have to take it home to do the repair anyway.

I have a base Mantis 8. While it is not the fastest, for what I use it for, it's perfect. I live in NYC where the speed limit is 25mph for all vehicles. In more congested areas with stop lights, you would be lucky to exceed 15mph. The torque is sufficient to accelerate well and it handles the city riding great.

Don't forget about the size of the wheels. 8" tires are quite small and more vulnerable to potholes. Where I live, I personally won't go below 10" which feels dicey enough as it stands.

The Eye3 is the smoothest but the zero 9 throttle comes very close. Both of them have minimal dead zone in the start of the pull. The mini 4 has a big dead zone of about 20% of full throttle before any power is fed to the motor. Ignoring the more customised settings available on the Eye 3 I actually like the finger throttle of the QS-04 the most as it is very smooth and more comfortable.

All reviews are just after purchase when the novelty is still there. Thinking of upgrading my slower one but realistically it's safer.

I wish it had went faster I mean 25-27 mph still feels like a rental scooter, I might return.

Sounds normal to me. Sounds like the Dualtron Raptor and Speedway V I had. Both of them were pretty noisy when under load.

Damn! If THAT is normal I am happy I got a Zero 10X and not the Mantis! The Zero definitely does not make noises like that!

I had a swagger 5 with 8" tires and potholes, bumps and cracks are very jarring. Ordered a scooter yesterday with 10" tube tires. Wanted tubeless but changing tires will be too hard for me if I went tubeless.

Do you think that range has anything to do with the temperature your are riding at? Was it longer when it was warmer? I'm about a few days away from ordering one and your review just hit me hard. I was basing myself off of the ESG review of 29 miles on their urban track but now you got me worried. I live in Canada so temps seems in range of where you are located.

Nightmare stories are always going to be out there for all manufacturers — you'll find haters for Apollo, Dualtron, Kaabo etc. Just do the regular maintenance and keep the extra money in your pocket.

I'd say it's connected wrong. If you unplug the brake sensors one at a time near the handlebars does it stop flashing?

Maybe the Mantis 10 Pro is for you? I test rode it at the store once and it was fast. Not as fast as my Wolf but it definitely doesn't hang around.

That's a hell of a hefty pricetag for a Mantis 8. They typically go for $999 here in the USA, and even then it wouldn't be my first pick. It's a high quality scooter for sure, that's not the issue. The thing I loathe about it is the 8" tires. They're at least nice and wide, but 8" tires are always gonna suck on rougher roads. Potholes are going to be a nightmare, even larger bumps/ruts in the road will be pretty hazardous. I would hate living with them on a daily 18 mile commute.

I bought a Mantis 8 Pro last week. No long term experience, my first ride was pretty solid and I think it could handle your commute really well, if you dont need to ride through rain often. May be worth mentioning (not to discourage you) my front motor died after 13km of riding. Waiting on warranty to repair it.

I think the true reason is the controllers Minimotors uses. I have the same sound on the Mantis 10 Pro.

It seems odd to me if this is how its intended to be. The scooter sounds broken at around 18km/h. Like really bad bicycle brakes when accelerating. Where I live max speed allowed on public roads is 20km/h so essentially I'm hearing that sound most of the time and its driving me nuts.

That's just the sound of the motors it's normal. When you have your scooter on a stand spin the motor that's the sound you hear. I have a dualtron eagle pro and had to get used to the sound. No worries be safe.

Watch out for the error 30. They don't like even the slightest light rain. I scraped my mantis king after having to rebuild and repair the thing one too many times. The tubed tires is its kryptonite. Probably changed tubes 10 times over a season. Get pretty good at it. Got a teewing x5 now and am never looking back.

Yes range is affected by temperature, especially if you leave it outside for some time and it cools. Keep in mind there is probably no way to get less range than I got. It was 34 mph with braking constantly and then accelerating to max speed in like 10 seconds. I also have a bent braking disc that touches on the brake pads, so that also probably reduces the range a bit. If you use one wheel drive, I am sure you will get 29 miles.

I've been getting 20 real world miles riding my mantis base with the 17.5 Ahr pack hard and that's with almost 300 pounds standing on the frame.

Kind of glad I didn't go with the kaabo mantis. Not that it's a bad scooter, but wouldn't have lived up to my expectations.

Notice that I said 8 pro+ which has dual 800w motors along a LG 24.5 ah battery that should give 30 miles range with 22mph average speed and minimotors controller and display. The original price seems to be roughly 1700$ it's on sale at the moment. No potholes where I live, all paved roads are smooth. I've been fine with xiaomi's original 8.5 tires along with dual suspension.

Slow down take your time do a little more research there is more quality competition along with great pricing. That's not a good deal, they can do way better.

Yeah, bigger wheels and suspension are both factors that add to weight. Really depends on the state of your roads. Pneumatic tubeless tires are the best.

People generally have the wrong idea of waterproofing — it's not only about making the exterior impervious, it can also be about making all the components weatherproof. Water gets into the engine bay of the car too. My Mercane has weep holes and I've soaked it a few times, nothing under the deck shows signs of water ingress.

When you say your calipers are worn out what do you mean? Worn out brake pads or something else? Not at all unusual — mine are almost worn out at 400 km but they are very cheap on AliExpress.

I wanna ride it in even downpours since I will use it as my commuter. My xiaomi has served waterproof wise fantastic — rode dozens of times in 4 inch snow and a lot of puddles and I have only sealed it with silicone sealant on the deck and display cover. Need just some more power and battery and wider tires.

Nanrobot D4+ 4.0 52v 23.5ah 2000 watt dual motor 40mph 40miles for $1299. Leo Out similar specs $1000 with $300 automatic coupon — $700 total. There's real competition out there at better pricing.

Silicone sealant everywhere where there is a small gap — for example where the deck's cover is attached. Open the screws, put the sealant there on the edges, put the cover back. Also some on the throttle/display since there seems to be a few gaps too.

This will seem weird but when the front brake sensor is plugged in and the light is flashing, tap the brake lever sharply with a spanner or something hard. If the sensor was connected wrong sometimes it gets cooked a bit and sticks. Tapping it sharply will sometimes make it come unstuck. If it does, it's definitely the sensor that needs replacing.
