Summary

The Kugoo ES2 has a reputation on Reddit as a budget scooter that demands patience and some mechanical aptitude to stay reliable. Owners frequently encounter throttle faults, loose screws, and wiring quality issues that require hands-on fixes shortly after purchase. Sentiment is mixed to negative overall — riders who go in expecting a plug-and-play experience tend to come away frustrated, while those willing to do preventive maintenance (loctite, screw checks, wiring inspection) report acceptable daily-use results. It suits very short urban commutes of under 10km where top speed and range are less critical, but it struggles to compete on value once alternatives are factored in.

Pros

  • Functional for short urban commutes under 10km — users report reaching 27km/h despite a 25km/h spec, outperforming its own marketing
  • Electric brake is stronger and more responsive than expected, providing confident stopping power at speed
  • Firmware is flashable and the scooter responds well to tuning — some users have pushed it to 35km/h after modifications
  • Available secondhand at significant discounts, making it a lower-risk entry point for first-time scooter buyers
  • Replacement parts like throttle assemblies are widely available and mostly plug-and-play with basic DIY skills

Cons

  • Throttle failure is the most commonly reported hardware fault — error code 02 on startup is a recurring issue with no simple fix for non-technical users
  • Internal wiring quality is poor at the factory level, with pinched cables and loose connectors found during repair teardowns
  • Real-world range falls well short of the claimed 25km, with independent testing showing around 14–15km for a 160-pound rider versus 24km for competing models like the Turboant X7 Pro
  • Stem screws loosen regularly and must be re-tightened or loctited frequently — a known maintenance burden from day one
  • The companion app fails to pair reliably on both iOS and Android, leaving app-dependent features like speed mode switching inaccessible
  • Experienced community members actively advise against buying it at full price — 'not the ES2, whatever else' is a recurring sentiment in buying advice threads

The Error Code 02 Problem Nobody Warns You About

A surprising number of ES2 owners hit a throttle fault on startup — error code 02 — that renders the scooter immobile. Reddit threads on this issue go unanswered, and Kugoo's app offers diagnosis but no clear fix, leaving new owners stranded without DIY skills.

It's a Mechanic's Scooter, Not a Commuter's Scooter

Longtime ES2 owners on Reddit are blunt: this scooter only becomes reliable after you fix it yourself. Loctite the stem screws, inspect the wiring, and swap the throttle preemptively — then it works. Skip that step and you're gambling on how long the factory job holds.

Tuners Love It, Commuters Don't

A niche group of ES2 owners treats it as a modding platform rather than a daily driver. Firmware tuning to 35km/h, wiring overhauls, and suspension tweaks are common in this crowd — but that's a different product than what most buyers think they're getting.

I went the same way as you regarding waiting to buy the extra battery. It took me a week from I got the scooter til I bought the battery. And it is totally worth it. There are two screws under a seal (warranty void if removed). These have to be tightened from time to time.

You can replace throttle assemblies; usually they are 3-wire units, so even if the connectors aren't correct you can always splice the wires together with a minimum of DIY work. However, the fact that it registered speed and now doesn't makes me think there are worse problems than just the throttle. You might have an issue with the motor connectors, or possibly the entire controller.

Pretty shoddy workmanship. They have no pride in anything they manufacture.

I expected having to work on it out of the box - you don't get a 2.4KW 24Ah dual-drive for €650 without compromises - but I didn't expect shorts waiting to happen like that. Oh well, now it's reliable.

The electric brake can be a bit violent and scary at higher speeds. The first time I rode my friend's ES4, I was expecting the e-brake to be all mushy, even at high speeds. It is not. It brakes hard. Lean back.

It's a mechanic's scooter: if you're willing to fix its issues then it actually becomes a reliable ride, but you do need to put in the time and effort. If you find it on flash sale for $200, and your time isn't worth much, and you have the skills to fix it preemptively, then it might be worthwhile. Otherwise stick with something more reliable.

Tighten the base handlebar screws regularly (and general checking of all other screws). I had the same issue where the two behind the warranty seal rattled loose. I'd probably recommend taking them out completely and using some loctite to secure them. That is what I've had to do. Don't let it fall over and break the hanger clip. Worth picking a spare one up on eBay so you're not waiting for a couple weeks if you do break it.

Buy a tube of loctite now, and put it on all the stem/handlebar screws. This is the smartest thing you can do. The extra battery pack is for convenience, unless you really plan to push the scooter's range. It's not comfortable for more than ~3 miles unless you have good bike paths.

I have one as well — the app is rubbish.

I definitely can't — still haven't been able to even connect to the app and got no help with that.

Not the ES2. Whatever else, just not the ES2.

X7 Pro is better than an ES2. Electronic Scooter Guide tested both with a 160-165 pound rider — the ES2 got 9 miles range, the X7 Pro got 15.

I don't know what local pricing is like but the M365 is good. If you can afford it the Segway Max is good too. Whatever you get, CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURE REGULARLY. Once a week at the outside, every ride if you can. This is the simplest tip I can give for longevity, after that is keep your bolts right.

Second scooter actually, I have a Ninebot ES2 that I've tuned the shit out of — meaning I can go 35kmh on it without trouble. Probably gonna sell it when the new one arrives.

Hi — did you ever get this fixed? Because the same thing (error code 02) has happened to my Kugoo ES2.

I finally got time to start opening the Kugoo up... I have no idea how this thing was still turning on — look at how someone left this! The wiring inside was completely butchered.

I removed the throttle for the brake and swapped it over to the acceleration, but the display board has two different connections for those throttles. I swapped the connections — this may have been done incorrectly. When it failed again I took it apart and in doing so pulled the wire from the throttle's board. I'm not skilled enough to solder the internal throttle board.

The range is one of the two disappointments of the ES2. They claim 25km and despite me being much lighter than average, real-world results fall well short of that figure.

Oh wow — the ES2 seems to be not very reliable. I think I might avoid it then.

I'm going to loctite most of the stem screws, I think. I didn't know there were more behind the sticker — thanks for the heads up.
