Summary

The Kugoo Kirin S1 is a budget-friendly last-mile commuter scooter that attracts riders looking for an affordable entry point into electric scooters, typically priced around £200–$260. Reddit sentiment is mixed-to-negative overall: owners appreciate its compact build, solid folding mechanism, and low-maintenance solid tires, but the single rear brake is a recurring safety concern that drives many users to actively recommend against it. The Kugoo/KuKirin branding situation causes real confusion in the community, with multiple overlapping model names and websites making it hard to know exactly what you're buying. For completely flat, smooth urban routes where you rarely need to stop hard, it does its job — but even budget-conscious buyers are frequently told to stretch their budget for something better.

Pros

  • Extremely affordable entry point at around £200–$260, making it one of the cheapest e-scooters with a brushless motor available
  • Solid tires mean zero puncture risk and virtually no brake pad maintenance — no flats, no adjustments, just ride
  • Compact and lightweight at ~11.9kg with a praised folding system that users call 'best in class' for portability on transit
  • Surprisingly sturdy build quality for the price — doesn't feel like a budget scooter when you pick it up
  • Hackable and modifiable: one user successfully converted it to 2WD with 700W dual motors using stock Kugoo controllers
  • Rear motor design makes it RWD, which gives it an edge over front-motor competitors in traction on flat surfaces

Cons

  • Only one brake on the rear wheel — no front mechanical brake, making emergency stops genuinely dangerous, and some countries now legally require dual brakes
  • Solid tires are extremely harsh on rough or uneven roads — every bump 'hits the soul' according to one 100-mile commuter
  • Bluetooth app connectivity is broken or undocumented: multiple users report the scooter shuts itself off whenever they try to pair it
  • Confusing model lineup — the Kirin S1, S1 Pro, S1 Plus, and S1 Max are different products with different specs, and the Kugoo vs KuKirin branding split makes knowing what you're actually buying nearly impossible
  • Battery connector melting reported on at least one unit; reliability issues like loose folding handles and self-unscrewing wheels noted on the S1 Plus variant
  • For the same or slightly higher budget, Reddit consistently recommends the Ninebot Max G2 or Xiaomi Pro 2 as more reliable long-term investments

The One-Brake Problem Nobody Warns You About

The Kugoo Kirin S1 runs rear-wheel drive with only an e-brake on the back wheel and a stomp fender — no front brake at all. Multiple experienced riders call it unsafe for any traffic environment, and at least one country is legislating dual brakes into law. It's the kind of detail that doesn't show up in spec sheets but changes everything about how the scooter actually feels to stop.

Budget Price, But Reddit Says Save More

At under $300, the Kirin S1 looks like a deal — but the community verdict is consistent: for a slightly higher budget, you get meaningfully better options. The Ninebot Max G2 and Xiaomi Pro 2 come up repeatedly as the recommended alternatives, leaving the Kirin S1 in an awkward spot where it's cheap but not cheap enough to justify its limitations.

Someone Actually Built a 700W Dual-Motor Version

One user gutted their Kugoo S1 Pro, added a second rear motor using two stock Kugoo controllers, and turned it into a 700W AWD scooter. The modification actually improved braking (two driven wheels instead of one) and low-battery performance, though range dropped to roughly 70–85% of stock. It's a niche find, but it shows the platform has more headroom than it looks like out of the box.

They're both crap, but at least the Kukirin is rear wheel drive.

I bought my Kukirin G2 Max on Kugooscooterusa.com and it shipped to me in less than a week. So far it's been great. Range is advertised 49 miles and I've gotten 43 miles out of it, and that was with some hills.

The branding is a total mess. Heard that KugooKirin came long after KUGOO initially launched. The former used to be one of KUGOO dealers in Europe and Russia but lately registered their own trademark with the kugoo word and model names. If you research you'll find that most KUKIRIN scooters share the same designs with other brands like Ausom, Unicool, Skycore etc.

One of the best last mile scooters out there. It's not a powerful or upgradeable scooter but does its job very well. Its compact, I like its design and style, has a solid build quality and its very simple and easy to use. Also, as a first scooter It's really nice because it is a no bullshit escooter (very low maintenance because of solid tyres and e-brake, no flats and no need to change brake pads or adjust brakes). Has a very nice folding system, maybe best in class, dual suspension setup.

I have one, Kugoo S1 Plus, broken after 3 years of use (2000km), battery won't charge above 2 bars, so it runs for 2km max, replacement battery is 190 euro, the whole scooter was 290 new, with warranty. Its a legit escooter brand, but I would buy a NIU.

I have the g2 max...over 2000 km and it runs great. Over 50km autonomy in second gear. Downhill 70km/h and it felt stable. Nice stock absorbers too.

Kugoo import some decent hardware, but they really need to get their nomenclature in order. I've had people buy the wrong scooter because I was trying to get them to buy a Kugoo S1 Plus but they bought the Kirin S1 Plus instead — a completely different model and a rather worse one. Can't even blame them when Kugoo themselves don't seem to know what they want to be called.

From what I know kugoo and kirin are 2 different brands and they decided to form one from what I heard (not 100% sure) but they make good quality scooters.

yes, acceleration got way better. I used two regular kugoo controllers. Second motor added second braking wheel, before it was just one. Scooter now brakes way better. So brakewise this only helped it.

Yes, I'm a proud owner of a Kugoo S1 Pro, it's been functioning perfectly, has no problems, matches description and specs (even outperforms in means of wattage). I have ~300km on it, I use it in town to get around to my family. It's 2 years old now, lost roughly 3 kilometers of its range.

The scooter is decent. It feels sturdy. I'm a heavy guy so it's really nothing exciting in terms of acceleration but it gets you going. I wasn't able to hit the stated top speed of 55 km/h. It maxed out at 46 km/h.

I bought two G2 Max scooters from the USA website. I paid about $700 for each one. After two months of riding the G2 Max, I needed more. I ended up selling one of them and then got me a Vsett 10+! This is a perfect scooter for me and I don't need anything else. But for commuting around on flat areas, the G2 Max does just fine.

Really nice project, I thought of doing something similar with my zero9 as well but a second motor would add too much weight for my use and there was no space for a second controller so I went for a better battery instead.

Nice little scooter, I'm very happy with it and see it as a good quality/price ratio. I'm quite a heavy rider and get around 40 km of effective battery range mostly at max speed and usually reach a top speed of 46-47 kph. The scooter itself is well built and sturdy. You can drop off sidewalks at speed if the situation requires it. Overall would recommend.

I just purchased one, it says Canadian stock shipping to the United States. I ordered it Monday so fingers crossed. Also it was $749 with a 1 year warranty — no tax, no shipping cost.

It would be the best last mile scooter they make if they'd bothered giving it a front brake. As it is, unfortunately it's too unsafe to recommend. If at all possible I recommend you return it and get the Kugoo S1 Plus (no 'Kirin' in the name), it's basically the same scooter with minor differences, except it's FWD so you do actually get braking on both wheels.

I have kugoo S1 plus but its awful. Bearings broke like 3 times. It shakes so much even on road. The wheels unscrew themself and front suspension is so stiff it does nothing. Folding handles are always loose. Also when on low battery it beeps so loud and the only way to turn it off is to cut off the speaker.

Ive had the s1 max for 2 weeks now. I do not recommend buying it, in normal conditions with uphill, downhill and normal terrain the real battery range is 20-25 km, also because of the lack of front suspension it makes it really uncomfortable and hard to drive, you feel every minimal stone on the road. It also started to make noises.

Ducati has 10-inch pneumatic tires, KuKirin only has 8-inch tires, and they are solid. It can be extremely uncomfortable. Also, the KuKirin doesn't have a mechanical brake, it's rear-wheel drive, so the electronic brake is in the back and the foot brake is in the same place.

To summarize what I know: When I turn on my electric scooter it shows in BT as HH-XA98572812, but when I try to pair it scooter just shutdown and it disappears from BT. I even tried a special app used to hack my other electric scooter Kirin M3 but also no luck, same behavior. So my guess is that this Kirin S1 pro require some special key/command when connecting to it.

Hard to say with reliability. You'll have some maintenance with whatever scooter you choose. I'd say look for a used/refurbished Ninebot Max G2. You could also do a refurbished Ninebot G30, but it's slower. IMO, these are the best balance of price, reliability, and speed for your budget.

Been using the kirin s1 pro since august 2022 when I use the train and/or bus to work. If you need to fold it a lot and carry around on bus/train and the roads you gonna drive are decent and not too much cars mixed with bikes, it is a great little thing. Just drive defensive.

I purchased the G3 and was thrilled until the battery completely stopped working after 60 days. They said to troubleshoot the wiring or ship it back to China. Now I have a big paperweight with wheels.

7.5 Ah stock battery. From the few kilometres I did I would say it has 70%-85% of original range after the dual motor conversion. Battery upgrade is my next goal.

That's impressive! I always wondered why no one made a 'hotrod' chassis. One where you could easily swap out wheel sizes/motor sizes without major modification, along with plug and play modular components. People love customizing their stuff.

The battery connector to the controller was melted. I changed the connector and didn't see any other visible damage. The battery is charged and works fine at 46 volts but the scooter does not turn on - after pressing the button nothing happens, and the display is black.

It's mainly down to looks considering they both have the same specs. Also idk if the kukirin has suspension but if it does that will make it more comfortable.

3 years and 2000km is not a bad lifespan, especially when you consider how small that battery is. The scooter will run from generic 36V batteries, it doesn't need a Kugoo-specific spare, as long as it's of the right size to fit in the deck. I have an extra range-booster battery on the deck of my S1 Plus and I'm super happy with it. As an urban ride it's a wonderful little machine.
