Summary

The Kugoo S1 Pro is a compact budget commuter scooter that Reddit users largely describe as a solid last-mile option for calm urban riding — provided you know what you're getting into. Its low-maintenance solid tires, clean folding mechanism, and simple electronics make it a genuinely hassle-free daily rider for short distances. However, reliability issues including BMS failures, display cut-outs, and a broken Bluetooth app experience show up frequently enough to be a pattern rather than isolated cases. The scooter has a vocal community of tinkerers who have pushed it well beyond stock specs, but stock users on rough roads or heavy traffic report frustration quickly.

Pros

  • Solid tires eliminate flat tire maintenance entirely — no punctures, no brake pad changes, and the e-brake system requires zero mechanical upkeep
  • Folding mechanism is praised as best-in-class for its size category, making bus and train commutes genuinely practical
  • Lightweight at around 12kg makes it easy to carry when folded — real-world commuters using it daily on public transit confirm it holds up
  • Hackable platform: one user successfully converted it to dual-motor 700W 2WD using stock Kugoo controllers, and the mod community is active
  • At its price point (~£200/$260), it punches above its weight in build feel — doesn't feel cheap despite the budget positioning
  • Low battery performance improved with dual-motor mods; stock unit maintains speed better than expected at low charge

Cons

  • Rear-only braking on the standard S1 Pro is a genuine safety concern flagged by multiple users — emergency stops at 30 km/h are risky without a front brake
  • Solid tires that can't be upgraded without significant effort make rough road riding genuinely painful — one user described it as hitting the soul on a 5-mile ride
  • Bluetooth app is essentially broken — no official app works reliably, and multiple users across threads report the scooter shutting itself off when pairing is attempted
  • BMS and display failures appear within the first year of ownership for a notable portion of users, with repair options limited due to sparse service network
  • Electronically capped at 30 km/h with no easy unlock — even dual-motor modders couldn't break the speed limit
  • The S1 Plus and Kirin S1 Pro are easily confused variants with different drivetrains and hinge quality; Kugoo's naming is inconsistent enough that buyers frequently receive the wrong model

The Bluetooth App That Never Works

Across multiple threads, S1 Pro owners report the same dead end: the scooter's Bluetooth disconnects or shuts off whenever a pairing attempt is made. There's no official working app, and the community hasn't cracked it either.

Best Last-Mile Scooter — With One Major Catch

Reddit's consensus is that the S1 Pro earns its budget price for calm, short-distance urban commuting. But the rear-only braking setup is a hard limit that several experienced riders say makes it genuinely unsafe in mixed traffic.

Someone Turned Theirs Into a 700W Dual-Motor Beast

A popular thread shows an S1 Pro converted to full 2WD using two stock Kugoo controllers. The mod improved braking, acceleration, and low-battery performance — though range dropped to roughly 70-85% of stock.

Interesting. To your issue: this seems to be a fault in the BMS. The power cord plugs straight into the power rail, hence why you are able to turn the scooter on when it's plugged in. It doesn't have an additional charge socket. Either a connector came loose, broke, or your BMS has a fault. You can check all those connectors by opening the plastic cover on the bottom and inspect all the connectors and cables.

I have to be careful washing it since it isn't as water resistant as it was before rebuild.

I would say some battery related issue. Maybe the BMS only allows the current to flow when charging and therefore the scooter won't turn on when not plugged in.

One of the best last mile scooters out there. It's not a powerful or upgradeable scooter but does its job very well. Its compact, I like its design and style, has a solid build quality and its very simple and easy to use. Also, as a first scooter It's really nice because it is a no bullshit escooter (very low maintenance because of solid tyres and e-brake, no flats and no need to change brake pads or adjust brakes). Has a very nice folding system, maybe best in class, dual suspension setup.

Are you getting enough power from the battery to get full acceleration from both motors? Also what controller did you go for? Dual vesc or two normal controllers?

Yes, acceleration got way better. I used two regular kugoo controllers.

You are missing a bolt on the folding mechanism. Don't ride it till you fix this.

It would be the best last mile scooter they make if they'd bothered giving it a front brake. As it is, unfortunately it's too unsafe to recommend. If at all possible I recommend you return it and get the Kugoo S1 Plus (no 'Kirin' in the name), it's basically the same scooter with minor differences, except it's FWD so you do actually get braking on both wheels.

What size battery do you have? Did real world range drop a lot or not that much? Just wondering if dual motors improved the work load of original motor. Since not having to work as hard to get to speed since two motors.

That's impressive! I always wondered why no one made a 'hotrod' chassis. One where you could easily swap out wheel sizes/motor sizes without major modification, along with plug and play modular components. People love customizing their stuff. And these solid tyres are real pain in the ass, they are loud and uncomfortable. But at least they won't puncture which is important to me.

Despite the pain it would be to change tyres I second this 100%.

I have kugoo S1 plus but its awful. Bearings broke like 3 times. It shakes so much even on road. The wheels unscrew themselves and front suspension is so stiff it does nothing. Folding handles are always loose. Also when on low battery it beeps so loud and the only way to turn it off is to cut off the speaker.

It's your charger, I had the same problem. It was sparking when plugging in then simply wouldn't charge. Plugged in my Ebike charger and no sparking and works perfectly. The battery is probably flat but the charger powers it but doesn't charge.

When I turn on my electric scooter it shows in BT as HH-XA98572812, but when I try to pair it the scooter just shuts down and it disappears from BT. I even tried a special app used to hack my other electric scooter Kirin M3 but also no luck, same behavior. So my guess is that this Kirin S1 Pro requires some special key/command when connecting to it.

Same, I bought it today and it doesn't connect to any app.

Have you opened it and checked out all the connectors? It could just be a loose dash cable or something. There are some under the dashboard and sometimes one halfway down inside the stem.

Found out the whole shaft has a larger end, which stops it from falling out in one side, the other side is held by a screw. So I put the 2nd screw in just in case, but the whole thing is just a shaft.

Now I have almost 130 km with this scooter, I didn't really feel unsafe with it. But I don't drive it really fast.
