Summary

The Mercane WideWheel Pro is a high-powered electric scooter that has built a cult following for its raw acceleration and hill-climbing ability, while simultaneously earning a reputation as one of the most maintenance-heavy and polarizing scooters in its class. Reddit sentiment leans negative overall, with brake failure and solid tire design being near-universal pain points even among fans. Long-term owners who stick with it report that the scooter rewards riders who are mechanically inclined and willing to tinker, but those expecting plug-and-play reliability will likely be disappointed. It's a scooter best suited for experienced riders on dry, smooth pavement who are comfortable doing their own brake adjustments and aren't afraid of a steep learning curve.

Pros

  • Dual 500W motors (1000W combined) deliver punchy, fun acceleration that regularly surprises riders — hills that stop other scooters are a non-issue even with heavier riders around 210lbs
  • Proven long-term durability for mechanically inclined owners: multiple Reddit users report 1,000+ miles and 4+ years of use when brakes are properly maintained and bolts are loc-tited
  • The wide-stance stability makes it exceptionally planted at straight-line speed — users note near-zero wobble and a tank-like feel that inspires confidence on open roads
  • A popular 52V battery mod is well-documented in the community and delivers a noticeable performance boost, making the scooter feel full-powered from first mile to last
  • Iconic, head-turning aesthetic — multiple owners report being stopped regularly by strangers asking about the scooter, something almost no other model in its class generates

Cons

  • Brake system is the scooter's defining flaw: front mechanical brakes have a known design defect where the return spring fails to reset, confirmed by multiple independent repair engineers and flagged in a Fluidfreeride safety notice as far back as 2019 — and Mercane never addressed it
  • Solid flat-profile tires create a dangerous combination: nearly zero wet-weather grip, poor cornering traction on uneven pavement, and rims that can dent from minor curb impacts — one user dented a rim in a parking lot within the first day
  • No e-braking (regenerative braking) means all stopping relies on the mechanical disc brakes, making brake pad wear rapid — one owner replaced pads over 10 times in 1,400km
  • At $900–$1,300 USD, competitors like the Apollo Ghost, Vsett 9+, and Zero 10 clones offer wider decks, better suspension, pneumatic tires, and superior reliability at the same price point
  • The narrow deck and short stem create ergonomic problems: riders over 6'2" will struggle with stem height, and the cramped footboard makes shifting your feet mid-ride difficult
  • Throttle response has a dead spot from a standstill followed by a jerky surge — even the upgraded Apollo throttle didn't resolve this for most users, making smooth low-speed control unnecessarily difficult

What Happens After 1,000 Miles on the WideWheel Pro?

A small but vocal group of Reddit owners have logged serious mileage — some past 1,400km — and report the scooter holds up if you stay on top of brake maintenance. The split between these long-haul owners and those who sold it within months reveals a scooter that rewards patience and mechanical aptitude, and punishes anyone who expects it to run like a daily driver out of the box.

The WideWheel Pro Is a 2019 Scooter Asking 2023 Prices

Reddit's most consistent criticism isn't just the brakes — it's the value equation. When the WideWheel Pro launched, it was one of the few dual-motor options available. Today, the community points to half a dozen alternatives at the same price with pneumatic tires, better warranties, and actual suspension. Buying one now means paying a nostalgia tax for a design that the rest of the market has moved past.

The 52V Mod Community Is the Most Interesting Thing About This Scooter

Buried inside the WideWheel Reddit community is an active modding scene — most notably a 52V battery upgrade that the community has documented extensively. Owners who've done it report the scooter feels full-powered from start to finish, eliminating the voltage sag that plagues the stock 48V pack. It's a telling sign: the most enthusiastic WideWheel owners are the ones who stopped riding the stock version.

Power & Speed: This right here is why people buy this scooter. Acceleration is quick. Torque is super fun and punchy in the low to mid range, and hills are of little concern. Apollo claims a top speed of 27mph, but at 170lbs I've found the realistic top speed to be 25mph which is still quite good.

I've had it for 4½ years and I'm surprised that it still works so well. I go with this scooter pretty much everywhere and I have a lot of mileage on it. This was my first ever scooter and I don't regret it one bit.

I recently boosted the battery pack from the OEM 48v to 52v. In the case of the Wide Wheel, the increase is considerable. To put it simply, this scooter feels like it literally just came off the charger for every single mile, start to finish. Acceleration while already fun, is now thrilling every time you punch it.

Widewheel Pro is not a durable scooter. At that price point in dual motor scooters I would consider the Vsett 9+ or the Apollo Ghost.

Your experience is typical. I was disappointed in mine too and sold it.

700 miles on the Dualtron Mini and liking it way better than the WideWheel Pro.

It feels pretty odd at first to ride since the tyres are also pretty round. But it's so stable that I can stand still and stay upright. I wouldn't want a smaller wheel after this.

Absolutely great review. I agree 100% everything about the Widewheel as a new owner also!

I also purchased mine from Apollo with the throttle upgrade. I have to pretty much agree completely with all the criticisms, though I don't find the throttle to be great. I did have some brake sensor issues with the front brake right away.

I've had my WideWheel Pro for almost 3 1/2 years. Put over 1k miles on it and it's still a beast. Yes the brakes suck but it's very quick and it's a tank. I've had other scooters that would get flats or the stem would wobble. Literally only issue I've had is the brakes. Seems like a lot of people parroting what they've heard online and haven't rode it for more than 100 miles….absolutely great scooter

People that have owned it, hate it. The flat tires make for unstable cornering, and the fact they're solid makes for a jarring ride.

It has many known design flaws: finicky brake calipers that like to go out of adjustment all the time, uncomfortable solid wheels that are a serious struggle to work on when they need replacement (basically don't even think about it if you don't have access to a press), general rickety construction, and other problems I read about and since forgot.

I have a widewheel pro as well for 2.5 years. The brake maintenance on these machines is constant. I have ridden 1400km and I have changed the brake pads over 10 times and always have a hex key with me so I can tighten the brakes anywhere.

The Mercane WideWheel has zero grip in wet weather and isn't great at top speed. It's fine for an entry level performance scooter but switching to a better tyre is much more comfortable at speed.

The biggest thing that sticks out about my wide wheel is the wet weather performance — the tyres are complete crap even in the damp. I also hate the profile so much, stopped me from being able to corner at more than a walking speed. But the power does make up for it.

It's a great fun scooter but I don't think it's a great commuter scooter — in city traffic my m365 is just so much lighter and nimble. The widewheel is heavy as fuck. It's like a tank when riding — a tank that loves to go straight.

The head brake simply doesn't work: there is a small detail that is supposed to return the brake wire to the initial position once the brake is released, and it just doesn't. None of the engineers I dealt with knew what to do with it, and all of them considered it a design flaw.

The really scary part is when you try to turn on uneven pavement like cobblestone. The suspension does a poor job of keeping the wheels in contact with the ground, and you lose traction VERY easily. The WideWheel just can't turn well at high speeds. I can blaze through turns easily at 30mph on my Mini that the WideWheel struggles to take at 24.

I had one of these for a few months, thinking it would be cool... The thing was an absolute death trap and shouldn't be allowed to be sold. It has no suspension, and the build quality is dreadful. It is also way too fast for what the sum of its parts can handle. I bought a Kaabo Mantis straight away and now have a Wolf Warrior XGT, which is superb.

No. Unless you want something unreliable and extremely uncomfortable, from the incredibly narrow deck to the square tire profiles that no one else uses for excellent reasons. As of a few years ago, it was one of the 3 most vilified scooters with the Boosted Rev and Unagi.

I've had this scooter for a while. It's a beast at 1000 watts, but it's limited. I would only use it on dry, smooth pavement. You may need to repair the stem. You may need to replace the brakes. That being said, it gets up hills like they're nothing. It goes far. It's smooth and reliable for paved areas. It's fun to ride. It doesn't wobble at all.

I have a 2020 Widewheel Pro and always feel like I'm going to slip off at high speeds, it doesn't feel like it has grip.

My model has only one rear brake but it's the dual motor one. I bought the upgraded SRAM brake, it stops well enough for me. It's the best Escooter I've been on (although that's not many). Unfortunately my battery is dead now and I can't find a spare, so I'm gonna have to shell out for a rebuild.

From what I recall it's not very reliable and the brakes are a consistent maintenance nightmare. At 400+ bucks for a half-broken project scooter, he can well keep it — I would never pay that much for one in that condition.

I dented the rear rim after 2 days of usage. No leaning or fancy stuff, just hit a bike ramp curb at an angle while doing 25 kph. We're talking a curb of about 1/3 of an inch tops. I bunny hopped with the front and it was fine, but the rear wheel did not make it. Come on... this thing looks fragile as hell.

I've got about 100 miles on a new-ish Widewheel Pro. I bought this scooter over more powerful and more practical scooters having test driven around 6 back-to-back at a warehouse because of the weird ride. I wanted something that felt a little different, and it absolutely delivers on that front.

There are only two scooters I actively advise against. This is one of them. It's like a 60s American muscle car. Straight line acceleration is good but suspension is poor and if you need to turn, lean and pray.

Solid tires = brain rattling. Also handling is sub par compared to pneumatic innertube tires. You will regret it.

Absolute rubbish scooter, dangerous and not in the fun way — wheel nuts loosen themselves, brakes are rubbish, suspension is rough as you feel and hear every single thing you ride over even tiny cracks in the footpath feel horrific, poorly designed, weak handlebars that I snapped riding along a footpath that wouldn't phase any other scooter. Dreadful display, pretty much zero setting adjustments, useless lights and I pretty much hated every second of every ride.

I really wish they made a WideWheel without the flat-wheel. It's just a cosmetic gimmick that hurts the safety of the scoot. Cars have wide wheels because their steering/suspension mechanisms allow them to maintain the contact patch in a turn — a scooter doesn't have these, so wide flat wheels just kill cornering.

The biggest thing that sticks out about my wide wheel is that the motor cuts out when going over gaps in the road, which I think may be when it senses a loss of traction. This is only mildly annoying on flats but it's jolted me when going 40kph going down a hill and gave me a fright.

It's a toy and it's crazy powerful all at the same time. Nothing about it makes sense; and it's absolutely a relic of its time — meaning it has design flaws that are pretty much solved issues in today's world. $850 is a lot for it. I don't know that exact market but they're old and worn and tired.

At the time, the Zero 10 and its many clones cost the same, weighed the same, with the same power, much bigger deck, better suspension, better reliability and a bigger battery/range. I can't remember all the clone variations, but there's a ton. Would get one of these 1,000 out of 1,000 times over the Widewheel.

I have the prior model and can confirm most everything about the ride. It's not bad, really, but honestly on a bad road it gets old pretty fast. The brakes stink as well. I just plan ahead a little more. It is a great-looking scooter though, and it picks up and goes, which is great. No regrets about buying it.

Brakes can be relatively easily replaced and should be replaced anyway. Fluidfreeride has plenty of parts. If you enjoy a fixer upper project, it's got potential. If you don't like doing that work, no low price tag can make it worth it.

Widewheel has some pretty crappy mechanical problems. Look at the Vsett 8 or 8 plus instead.

The WWPro is definitely a different kind of scooter compared to the rest. The low profile tires means you really have to be careful with bumps and potholes. You'd pretty much run into the same problems if your car had low profile tires.
