Summary

The Okai EA10 Beetle is a seated electric scooter occupying an awkward niche between a traditional kick scooter and an e-bike. Reddit sentiment is genuinely mixed — owners who picked it up on sale (around $150–$320) tend to love it for casual commutes, while anyone paying close to list price faces sharp pushback from the community. The scooter's comfort and quirky design win fans, but its 15mph top speed, small wheels, and firmware-locked governor frustrate riders who want to use it on real roads. Customer support from Okai is widely criticized as slow and unhelpful, and issues like account binding on secondhand units add friction for used buyers.

Pros

  • Comfortable seated ride that genuinely beats standing scooters for longer flat commutes — the suspension seat and pneumatic tires absorb enough road shock for riders doing 5-mile daily routes
  • Excellent value when purchased used or on sale — multiple owners report getting it for $150–$320 and calling it a solid deal at that price point
  • Okai's brand legitimacy as a B2B fleet supplier gives the EA10 a hardware credibility edge over random Aliexpress alternatives in its class
  • NFC app integration lets you unlock and control lights from your phone — useful as a workaround when hardware buttons fail
  • Compact and distinctive form factor that works well for short campus or last-mile commutes where bulkier e-bikes would be overkill

Cons

  • Hard firmware speed cap at 15mph (25 km/h) with no known unlock method — the speed limit is baked into the motor controller, not a simple cable or menu option
  • List price of $750–$955 draws near-universal Reddit rejection — at that price, the Ninebot Max, NIU KQi Air, or used alternatives offer significantly better specs
  • Customer support is a consistent failure point — slow email responses, a $25 unbinding fee for secondhand units, and reports of unresolved hardware defects
  • Wiring and battery reliability concerns — new units reported dead on arrival, Error 12E appearing after short breaks, and one user reporting a bad wire on a brand-new unit
  • Heavy and non-portable at 58 lbs with no folding convenience — you're committing to leaving it locked outside, not carrying it upstairs or onto transit
  • Tiny 10.4Ah battery on the base model leaves almost no headroom for any performance modifications without crippling range

Is 15mph Enough for Real Roads?

The EA10's governor is the most debated feature on Reddit. Riders in bike lanes feel unsafe at the enforced cap, and unlike older scooters, there's no cable to cut — the limit lives in the firmware and Okai won't share an unlock code.

A Good Scooter Trapped in a Bad Price Tag

At $150–$320 used, Reddit owners consistently call the EA10 a worthwhile buy. At $750+, the community is equally consistent: the Ninebot Max or NIU options beat it on every spec that matters for the same money.

The Secondhand Binding Problem Nobody Warned You About

Buying an EA10 used comes with a hidden risk: the app ties the scooter to the original owner's account, and unlocking it requires contacting Okai with proof of purchase — a process that can take days and sometimes costs $25.

I would expect a lot more for $955.

Great for airports, not so good at life.

I don't see the advantage over a regular scooter with a seat. It's not smaller, lighter, faster, easier to carry and doesn't have any better storage. It looks kind of neat but in a way that implies that it looks that way for a reason, which doesn't appear to be the case.

I have a $200 gotrax that outperforms this. 15.5mph, 18 mile range, and 5hr charge time. For $950 I'd expect a bit more.

What a weird niche machine. If you want an electric scooter, get a regular one. If you want to sit, get an ebike/emoped. This is like taking one of both, and combining only the worse parts into one vehicle - small wheels, no suspension, heavy with no portability, slow, and underpowered.

For something that bulky you'd expect 50 miles.

Okai is a legit company. They make scooters for various rental companies but their consumer stuff is not so popular and not as tested like Ninebot Max or even the Niu stuff.

For $950 I would rather get the NIU KQi Air, faster, more range and lighter.

Call the manufacturer's technical support, see if there's a special code using button press combinations that you can enter to disable the speed limiter. It is not like the good old days when there was a cable that you can disconnect or cut, it is built into the firmware of the system on a chip computer so it cannot be done by user like the good old days.

10.4 AH battery is tiny. Pushing that thing past its specs are going to cripple it in terms of range…& FAST.

As a owner of ea10 I disagree with your opinion. It's proven reliable and has held up wonderfully in the year I owned it. It's going strong and I think reviews of the seat being comfortable are over stating it, it's hard as rock. On sale it's around $320-$500 and well worth it for a seated scooter. It's list price is crazy and I'd never pay $750.

Okai is a respected brand but this is a pretty low-end scooter with only a 300W motor and tubed tires. Wait for a Niu KQi2 Pro or a Ninebot Max G30LP to be on sale for $500 and buy that instead.

Trash products. We purchased a bike new and the battery was defective. They are claiming it will take six weeks to replace it plus you have to pay some fee. Trash company and products.

Looks to be the same platform as the ES20, which is a M365 soft-clone of sorts, but to be correct is absolutely NOT actually a miclone at all - it's just a FWD 8" class unideck scooter that looks similar. Okai is legitimate; as legitimate as Ninebot (Xiaomi OEM), so if you want a xiaomioid and one would be adequate for you I don't see why NOT this over a M365.

Nope. No special code. Cannot be done. The speed control is in the motor. The speed limit can be lifted. However you will not receive an appreciable increase in speed. Just a removal of the auto brake.

We had this happen with an Okai ebike that we had and sold to someone. It was bound. Okai was contacted. They said we had to have a receipt. I gave them the name/email the account was under, the serial number off the side of the bike and told them what the deal was and they unbound it for us this morning.

I love it. Not the best price to performance, but I love the concept of a modern motocompo.

I really love the form factor. And I'm interested in how ready this is to repair. But man that price is quite steep.

I have never seen one in my neighborhood. They are nice looking and presumably well built. But at 58 pounds you are not going to carry this thing around. And it's intended to be used exclusively while sitting down, which is not how most kick scooters are used.

Yes, they're easy to ride (above 3-4mph). They do not have a suspension, however. So aside from the cushioned suspension seat and pneumatic tires, they don't offer much else. I wouldn't recommend it if your route isn't well paved.

I got one, easy to operate and comfier than a stand scooter TBH. I mean if you don't have a long distance to go it's a pretty good option.

I loved the scooter but I think there was a bad wire so I had to return it. Just be careful on how you hold and stuff because the wires are very delicate.

I got this thing for 150 bucks used. It had 350 miles on it and I could still get into the app. Everything's like it's brand new and the guy needed money so I feel like I got a hell of a deal on it.

The slow speed is a bit dangerous where I take this thing with just 15mph - often have to resort to the sidewalk at like 8mph. Getting to 20-25 is much closer to the speed limit at my area that I can reasonably ride on the streets without feeling like a massive douche.

OKAI was non-responsive, but I also reached out to NAZEOM Customer Support. A very helpful employee verified my auction purchase and promptly reset the scooter. I was immediately able to bind it to my OKAI account.

I kinda solved it. If you had an account with the okai scooter EA10 connected and it brings you back to the log in screen, and once you log in it says its bound, well all you have to do is merge an account and it solves the problem. Honestly mess around with the app.

It is heavier and less portable than scooters in the same power and range class so it's just a dumb idea.

Can of contact cleaner might get it working, give it a good flush while gently cycling the button.

I have an injured ankle and have been looking at this one for a couple of weeks, but I can't quite justify the price. It would be cool for short commutes and to be able to tag along with my husband while he walks the dog.

Bought one yesterday but returned it as the seat cushion moves. There's no screws to hold it in place. Other than that, I love it!

I do not recommend this product. I bought one. Stopped charging in less than a year. Of course, when the company says 1 year warranty, the battery is excluded from that one year. This exclusion was not stated anywhere before you buy it. I found out the hard way through their customer service.
