Summary

The Speedway Leger is a mid-range electric scooter from Minimotors that has earned a loyal following among commuters and urban explorers looking for a step up from rental scooters without breaking the bank. Reddit sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with owners frequently praising its real-world range, suspension quality, and overall build for the price. It sits in a competitive sweet spot — significantly outperforming options like the Boosted Rev on paper while being far more accessible than higher-end Dualtrons. That said, it's a scooter best suited to lighter riders on paved surfaces; heavier users report noticeably reduced hill-climbing ability, and it's not made for off-road use.

Pros

  • Exceptional real-world range — a 130lb rider clocked 34 miles on a single charge with 45% battery remaining, far exceeding typical expectations for a 500W scooter
  • Front suspension makes a significant difference on rough city streets; owners transitioning from rigid ride-share scooters consistently note how much more comfortable the ride feels
  • Strong value vs. the competition — beats the Boosted Rev in range, speed, weight, and price, while undercutting many dual-motor options by hundreds of dollars
  • Top speed of 30–31mph (lighter riders), making it one of the faster single-motor options in its price bracket
  • Solid Minimotors build quality and brand reputation, with a 1-year warranty offering peace of mind that many cheaper Chinese alternatives don't
  • Electronic regenerative braking is surprisingly effective — multiple owners prefer it over ABS, with strong stopping power from 25mph+

Cons

  • Single rear drum brake with no front brake is a recurring complaint — riders going 30mph feel underbraked, and many consider disc brakes a minimum at this speed
  • ABS produces an annoying 'dum dum dum' noise and is widely considered inferior to just using the regen braking; most users disable it
  • Folding mechanism is unintuitive and poorly documented — requires pushing at the rear wheel to release, which is not explained in the manual
  • Tube tires, not tubeless as some early listings claimed — pinched tubes are a known recurring issue, particularly for the Leger Pro variant
  • Heavier riders (185lb+) report noticeably weaker hill climbing; the 500W single motor simply runs out of steam on steeper grades
  • Controller is limited to ~25A; power upgrades require a shunt mod or full controller swap, making meaningful performance tuning expensive and risky

The Folding Mechanism No One Can Figure Out

Nearly every new Leger owner reports the same first-day frustration: the fold latch doesn't work the way you'd expect. You have to push the scooter back at the rear wheel while stepping on the latch — a technique not mentioned anywhere in the manual. It's a minor issue once you know it, but an oddly consistent first impression for a scooter this polished.

Is One Brake Enough at 30mph?

The Leger's single rear drum brake divides the community. Some owners call it perfectly adequate for urban commuting with predictive braking habits. Others are frustrated that a scooter capable of 30mph ships without a front disc brake. The consensus leans toward 'fine in practice, but it shouldn't be a debate at this price point.'

Still Worth Buying Years After Launch

Despite being several years old, Reddit consistently recommends the Leger as a current buy. One user put it plainly: if it moved people well in 2021, it still moves people well today. With scooter tech largely stagnant in this price bracket, the Leger holds up against newer competitors like the Kukirin with little to envy.

Initial thoughts on the new Minimotors Speedway Leger 500w scooter. I usually don't do reviews, or make polished videos but I felt this was needed since there's so little content about it from US users.

Very solid construction overall. Some small imperfections (marks etc) out of the box - these seem like they were just how it was manufactured. The fold down mechanism is a little too tough - you have to push the scooter back at the rear wheel for it to work (cant just directly use foot on the folding latch to fold). I had to youtube the mini 4 folding mechanism to understand how to do this - the manual doesn't say anything about pushing at the rear.

Be very careful about tightening the top nut to remove play. What often happens is the bottom nut starts getting loose. Tightening the top nut to fix that takes travel out of the suspension. Then the bottom nut gets loose again, you go 'wtf?', tighten the top nut again, and eventually you stop your suspension from working.

Such a shame they went with those cheap breaks. I don't get it, for this money I can get 5 years old 125CC motorcycle... They make an electric kick-scooter and still not able to add decent disc brakes.

Thank you! I was nervous because I couldn't find a ton of information either. The biggest selling points for me were it coming from a well-established, reputable company like Minimotors, the 1 year warranty (just in case), and that the advertised specs fell somewhere in the mid-range so I could get around my city with ease.

You will find the ABS sucks compared to the regen. The stopping power is exponentially better with electronic braking. ABS is sort of a gimmick to me still.... my girlfriend was amazed at the stopping power from 25mph with electronic braking enabled.

Yah it's obscene that this thing doesn't have a front disk brake, would have been best in class at this weight and price point if it did.

I'm glad you've had so much fun on your first ride! Same as you, for me it's about exploring and discovering areas and places you never would've seen otherwise. I map new trails almost every weekend and it's been a blast.

Hell yeah dude! So glad you went with the Leger and are stoked on it! I'm blown away by how comfortable and stable it feels even cruising down the street going 31mph (that's what mine maxes on a full charge but I'm only 140lbs) really enjoying it and use it quite often when I need something a bit more compact than the DT! Climbs hills surprisingly well too. And I mean HILLS. Not inclines.

Great review, thanks! I'm getting this instead of the Rev now thanks to you! I live in New York as well.

The single drum brake pisses me the fk off on my speedway mini 4 aswell. Good thing I found a front wheel with a drum brake so will probably order that soon, still anything faster than 20mph needs dual disc brakes for proper braking and safety imo.

Unfortunately the battery has nothing to do with the power. That is 100% on the controllers and on the motors. The only reason to upgrade a battery is if the old one is degraded or if you're trying to add a second battery to the stem for more range. Upgrades on scooters is usually not financially feasible or even mechanically viable.

If you get the original controller, I think it's more or less plug and play. The controller cable colors should have the same coloring as the scooter, making it easy to install.

As much as I love it and the electric scooter experience in general, I gotta say that riding in the rain or snow would be a touch too nerve wracking for me. The tires did feel pretty grippy on the terrain I took it over so someone with more confidence may have a decent amount of luck with it.

I don't necessarily think the drum brakes are bad - I personally would've preferred hydraulic brakes but no scooters come with that. The difference between drum/disk brakes isn't THAT big. The mini 4 had the same drum brakes and they were fine scooters - no reports of issues with braking.

Thanks for the mention! I'm glad you had such a good time with it. For the price, the thing's a lil beast honestly.

Yup 100% agree on all the points! No scooter comes close to the build quality and performance at this price.

I think you just sold me on this instead of getting the boosted rev, I haven't pulled the trigger on it due to range anxiety with mode 3 on the rev.

I haven't ridden a Boosted Rev, but on paper the Leger beats it easily in terms of range, speed, weight, and price. The Leger also has great suspension, while the Rev has no suspension. Personally, I'm increasingly of the opinion that good suspension is the single feature that matter most when it comes to improving ride quality on a scooter.

Great review. Your experience is mostly in line with mine... minus the hill climbing capabilities since I weigh 60lbs (27kg) more. I need dual motors to get my rear up a hill at 20mph.

Nice review. The folding mechanism takes a little getting used too. You have to push the handlebars forward while stepping on the latch to get it to release smoothly. And unfortunately there's nothing to stop the handlebars from rotating while folded.

Mine is awesome! Don't get one if you plan to do a lot of offloading or any at all. Stick to 10 inch wheels and dual motors. They are definitely street queens.

It's doing great. The weak link is the tires. If they were tubeless, it would be a perfect scooter. Tubes constantly get pinched.

It's from minimotors the same people that make Dualtrons. It's got a big battery for great range.

If it moved people well in 2021, it'll still move people well in 2025. There was a bit of a jump in scooter tech between its predecessor the Mini4Pro and the Leger, as the former really was quite agricultural, but ever since then scooter tech has been effectively stagnant and as a result the Leger has little to envy to a modern-day Kukirin or something.

No front brake. I don't think it needs one. The rear drum brake + abs feature does an adequate job of stopping the scooter fast when needed.

The Speedway controller is limited to 25A. You can get it to deliver a bit more - about 30A - by thickening the shunt (google 'shunt mod'), but it's not a night-and-day difference. People do increase voltage on these, but because it increases top speed, not all-round performance.

The dum-dum-dum sounds stops if you disable the ABS. Im actually happier with the electronic braking instead of the ABS so thanks for the suggestion.

Current owner of the SM4P and I went with this one because I feel as though it doesn't stand out as much as the SL. I really feel as though people who see me ride this just think it's another shareable E scooter which makes me feel safe about not being an easy target.

Careful with those connectors, Super hard to unplug, and the prongs are easy to damage.

I totally agree about the comfort and stability. I didn't realize how important suspension was until I finally rode a scooter that actually has it. I've been riding my scooter in Philly, but next time I'm back in DC I'll be back on the ride-share scooters, and I'm not sure I want to ride without the protection that suspension provides.

Yes. Unfortunately any single motor scooter around 500-600w will struggle up a hill (over 15 deg grade) at our weight. I'd look into at least a Turbowheel Hornet (Dual 500w motors, $1350 usd) or another dual motor scooter with more power. I'm very happy with my Speedway 5 where I live. The Leger is my wife's scooter, and she can climb pretty much any hill with it since she only weighs 100lbs.

I agree with the brakes - dont feel dangerous to me. I also look ahead at a distance to see what speed I should be at and predict when I should start slowing down so I dont suddenly brake.

I was considering picking one up this or next week. Seems to have a great balance of features. Not sure about the suspension though, for NYC streets. The Youtube review says it's 'stiff' and I hear so many Vsett owners loving the bounce on theirs.
