Summary

The Xiaomi Mi 1S is a budget-friendly entry-level electric scooter that earns generally positive marks for reliability and ease of use on flat urban terrain. It's best suited for lighter riders doing short daily commutes under 10km on level ground β€” heavier riders (80kg+) will quickly notice the 250W motor's limitations on inclines and a meaningful drop in real-world range versus advertised specs. The scooter has a strong modding community around it, with custom firmware (SHFW) and 10-inch tire upgrades being common recommendations. Owners tend to keep it for years and find it a dependable workhorse once expectations are properly set.

Pros

  • Handles short flat commutes well β€” real-world range of 10–12 miles on flat terrain for riders under 75kg is consistently reported
  • Air-filled tires provide noticeably better comfort than airless alternatives at this price point, and slime-treatment largely eliminates puncture risk
  • Active modding community: SHFW custom firmware unlocks speed tuning, field weakening, and amp control; 10-inch tire kits (~€30) dramatically improve ride comfort
  • Cheap, widely available parts keep long-term ownership costs manageable β€” users report riding the same unit for years
  • Foldable and lightweight enough for multi-modal commutes combining scooter + public transit
  • Battery recalibration (full charge/discharge cycles) can recover lost range on used units β€” common fix that works

Cons

  • 250W motor struggles significantly with riders over 75kg on any incline; rated 100kg but real performance degrades well before that limit
  • Advertised 18-mile range is unrealistic for most real-world conditions β€” expect 8–12 miles depending on rider weight, terrain, and temperature
  • No suspension from the factory β€” small wheels amplify bumpy roads and cobblestones, pushing many owners to upgrade or replace the unit
  • Custom firmware (SHFW) requires an Android phone and sometimes a hardware ST-Link dongle to downgrade BLE β€” not plug-and-play for non-technical users
  • Stem creak is a known issue; requires regular lubrication and tightening of the internal square bolt to keep it feeling safe
  • Speed cap at 15mph (25km/h) is hard-locked in Drive mode (12mph); riders expecting more straight out of the box will be disappointed

Does Xiaomi's 100kg Weight Rating Hold Up?

Officially rated for 100kg, but Reddit riders at 80-90kg consistently report sluggish hill climbing and 50% range loss. The 250W motor tells a different story than the spec sheet.

The Xiaomi 1S Is a Modder's Scooter in Disguise

Stock, it's a basic commuter. But with SHFW firmware, 10-inch tires, and optional monorim shocks, owners turn it into a significantly more capable machine β€” often for under €50 in upgrades.

Used for Years and Still Going β€” If You Buy It Right

Multiple Reddit owners report daily riding the 1S for two or more years without major failures. The key is buying new or verifying battery cycle count and firmware state on used units.

Get a bicycle helmet if you don't already, I have an electric horn that is quite loud and gets people's attention and always have two hands on the scooter while riding.

Lubricate, lubricate, lubricate. Synthetic silicone spray is your friend. There's also a square bolt inside the folding mechanism that you should tighten, this eliminated creaking completely on my friend's pro 2. I'd definitely go with a Xiaomi, they seem like solid workhorses.

1S Owner here (got it 2 weeks ago). The Mi Scooter 3's motor max is 600W (100W more than the 1S) but battery life wise the same (30km or 18 miles). If you go on hilly sides, the Mi Scooter 3 will be a bit more better due to its 100W difference. Basically the 1S and the Mi scooter 3 are casually the same. If you want a cheaper option, definitely go for the 1S, you will have a bit more spare money for the 10 inch tires.

Slime in the wheels, helmet on the head, learn to ride without pushing or pulling on the handlebar hard all the time (ride it more like a skateboard), it'll make it last longer. Enjoy it stock, when you get bored of it sky is the limit.

Use SHFW, its free and it wont kill your scooter like that garbage right there.

If range is your absolute priority, then low power and low speed are key. If you have the stock 30-cell battery 21 amps is completely safe, 25 amps is reasonably safe, and 30 amps is safe-ish. The cells are theoretically only rated to a maximum of 7A per cell and you have 3 in parallel, so 21.

Why won't you just install shfw on your xiaomi 1s, you can do it by installing scooterhacking app on an android phone, and then flash it - you might need to buy a stlink to downgrade the Bluetooth firmware to be able to update the firmware. SHFW is basically a very customisable firmware, to control speed, field weakening and every other setting instantly, it's great.

Personally I'd go for the 1S. If you can afford the extra cash the Xiaomi pro 2 is great though.

I despise airless tires, so I'd heartily recommend going for the 1S and sliming the tubes to prevent flats. You can get some comfort on airless tires and a good suspension system, but you don't get that on cheap commuter scooters β€” all you get is a couple springs that do very little. The 1S has a very strong modding community.

At your weight and uphill, you'll be lucky to get 50% of the advertised range and will notice 1-2mph less top speeds. Testing on these is done with a 65kg rider, at 15kmh and flat terrain. The 1s has a 250w motor, so anybody over 65kg and especially up higher hills will notice a drop-off (max gradient is 14%).

They are effectively equivalent. However, if you already know you intend to put 10" tires on whatever you get, perhaps you might want to consider the Ninebot F30/F40 instead; it's effectively the same thing, except with slightly different looks and 10" tires out of the factory.

If you often ride uphill, yes the low range is expected. If you don't, it seems unusually low even considering the usual scam factor in the official specs. You do have fully inflated tires, yes?

What is the temperature outside when riding? Do you store and charge the scooter inside your home? Make sure your tire pressures are 50psi. 8 miles is a bit low, but not far off considering that the claimed range is VERY optimistic. You should be getting 10-12mi.

First up: get a 10" tire kit, it'll cost you like thirty bucks from aliexpress. It comes with tires, tubes and a bunch of plastic spacers to fix various clearance issues with the oversized tires. The m365 gets a massive boost in comfort with ten-inchers, it won't even feel like the same scooter.

I have the exactly same Scooter but it can go 30km in one charge.

Yes, mine also when its flat, but this road has a lot of uphill, so it drains battery faster.

Mine really holds about 26 kms. Judging by the mi scooter 3's slightly increased torque it really matters if you wanna go a bit more expensive or save some money by getting the 1s. Removing speed limit does help a bit but drains battery faster.

Mi 1s is sort of ok. Should easy do 4km on level ground. Hills or heavy rider - it hasn't got the power. Cheap parts, reliable, but small wheels, no suspension.

Not bad - if all is ok. Get m365 Dashboard app see what it says milage, errors battery info. Not really inspiring but in a year or 2 you might just like it. Put 10" tire on back.

I'd go with the M2. Xiaomis are great but the stem lock mechanisms though… both my standard m365 and Pro creaked so badly it felt unsafe.

I thought it would handle my weight much better given these are rated to 100kg and I'm about average for my height. Perhaps I should get on that diet! I guess my expectations were too high but for Β£450 new I thought it would perform better.

So did some further testing and managed to resolve the issues. Range is now over 10 miles which is satisfactory (possibly more in flat areas using drive mode conservatively). Re-calibrated battery (full 100% charge and full discharge multiple times), reset all settings back to factory, checked for custom firmware.

Yeah, Tires are inflated fully. I have to go up a slight incline but have only done that twice during this charge. When I charged it today, within half hour/45 minutes it jumped from 10% to 51%, which would indicate to me possible cells are faulty.

May I suggest a 10" tire kit for your 1S? Costs €30 and an hour to fit, will make a huge difference in comfort.

I don't really want to mod my existing scooter. I was hoping to get something with shock absorbers and sell my 1S.

The Ninebot G2 and Xiaomi 4 Ultra are both approved for Germany, and should easily meet your specifications. The 4 Ultra has been selling at significant, if somewhat random, discounts.

Absolutely not solid tires. Uncomfortable as hell without an add-on suspension system. They are only worth bothering with if you routinely ride in worst-case environments - thorny bushes everywhere, sharp rocks, broken glass. If you don't live in such a place, pneumatic plus slime is a winning combination.

Get a good pump - the Xiaomi electrical pump is really great! And check your tire pressure at least once a week - keep it at 50 PSI to avoid flats!

Nice ride video, the broken up pavements remind me of the ones we have here in Bratislava. The scooter handles it but you feel every bump.
