Summary

The Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter 1S has a loyal but realistic fanbase on Reddit β€” most owners describe it as a solid, no-frills commuter for short flat distances rather than a high-performance machine. It handles daily 4–12km urban rides comfortably on level ground, but its 250W motor genuinely struggles with riders over 75kg on inclines. The scooter punches well above its weight in terms of modding potential: a thriving community has built out firmware hacking (SHFW), tire upgrades, and battery tuning options that can meaningfully extend its usefulness. Overall sentiment is positive but tempered β€” it's a good entry-level buy, especially used, but buyers expecting spec-sheet performance will be disappointed.

Pros

  • Reliable daily driver for short flat commutes β€” multiple users report consistent 20–26km real-world range on level terrain with moderate riders
  • Air-filled pneumatic tires provide noticeably better comfort than airless alternatives at this price point, and slime treatment effectively prevents flats
  • Strong modding ecosystem: SHFW custom firmware, 10" tire upgrade kits (~€30), and battery amp tuning allow substantial performance and comfort improvements post-purchase
  • Compatible with the m365 Dashboard app for battery health monitoring, mileage tracking, and error diagnostics
  • Priced competitively in the used market (€100–150 range) making it an attractive starter scooter for light urban use
  • Xiaomi's track record of releasing and iterating on scooters over several years gives buyers confidence in parts availability and community knowledge

Cons

  • 250W motor noticeably underperforms with riders over ~75kg on anything steeper than 14% gradient β€” uphill riding becomes slow or requires pushing
  • Advertised 30km range is tested with a 65kg rider at 15km/h on flat terrain; real-world range for average-weight riders on mixed terrain is closer to 10–16km
  • No suspension system and small 8.5" stock wheels make cobblestone or rough road riding uncomfortable β€” the 10" upgrade helps but requires DIY installation
  • Dashboard and electronics have documented vulnerability to moisture; water ingress from rain or cleaning can cause screen lockups and unresponsive controls
  • Stem folding mechanism is prone to creaking under load β€” requires regular lubrication with synthetic silicone spray and periodic bolt tightening
  • Custom firmware flashing (SHFW) requires an Android phone and in some cases a STLink hardware dongle to downgrade BLE β€” the process has a meaningful barrier for non-technical users

The 10" Tire Upgrade Is Almost Mandatory

Reddit's most repeated tip for 1S owners is to immediately swap to a 10" tire kit β€” a €30 aliexpress purchase that users describe as transformative on bumpy roads, effectively turning it into a different scooter.

Good Entry Scooter, Bad Spec-Sheet Scooter

The 1S consistently delivers in real ownership conditions β€” short flat commutes, light riders, urban environments β€” but buyers who expect to hit advertised range or speed figures at average weight will be routinely let down.

SHFW Firmware Unlocks Its Real Potential

A surprising number of 1S owners go beyond stock settings: the scooter has deep firmware hacking support via the ScooterHacking app, enabling custom speed limits, field weakening, and amp tuning that the stock firmware deliberately caps.

Get a bicycle helmet if you don't already, I have an electric horn that is quite loud and gets people's attention and always have two hands on the scooter while riding.

Lubricate, lubricate, lubricate. Synthetic silicone spray is your friend. There's also a square bolt inside the folding mechanism that you should tighten, this eliminated creaking completely on my friend's pro 2. I'd definitely go with a Xiaomi, they seem like solid workhorses.

Slime in the wheels, helmet on the head, learn to ride without pushing or pulling on the handlebar hard all the time (ride it more like a skateboard), it'll make it last longer. Enjoy it stock, when you get bored of it sky is the limit.

1S Owner here, from what research I did, the Mi Scooter 3's motor max is 600W (100W more than the 1S) but battery life wise the same (30km or 18 miles). If you go on hilly sides, the Mi Scooter 3 will be a bit more better due to its 100W difference. Basically the 1S and the Mi scooter 3 are casually the same. If you want a cheaper option, definitely go for the 1S.

Use SHFW, its free and it wont kill your scooter like that garbage right there.

If range is your absolute priority, then low power and low speed are key. If you have the stock 30-cell battery 21 amps is completely safe, 25 amps is reasonably safe, and 30 amps is safe-ish. The cells are theoretically only rated to a maximum of 7A per cell and you have 3 in parallel, so 21 amps.

At your weight and uphill, you'll be lucky to get 50% of the advertised range and will notice 1-2mph less top speeds. Testing on these is done with a 65kg rider, at 15kmh and flat terrain. The 1s has a 250w motor, so anybody over 65kg and especially up higher hills will notice a drop-off (max gradient is 14%).

Why won't you just install shfw on your xiaomi 1s, you can do it by installing scooterhacking app on an android phone, and then flash it - you might need to buy a stlink to downgrade the Bluetooth firmware to be able to update the firmware. SHFW is basically a very customisable firmware, to control speed, field weakening and every other setting instantly, it's great.

Personally I'd go for the 1S. If you can afford the extra cash the Xiaomi pro 2 is great though.

I despise airless tires, so I'd heartily recommend going for the 1S and sliming the tubes to prevent flats. You can get some comfort on airless tires and a good suspension system, but you don't get that on cheap commuter scooters β€” all you get is a couple springs that do very little. Air tires on the other hand are acceptably comfortable.

First up: get a 10" tire kit, it'll cost you like thirty bucks from aliexpress. It comes with tires, tubes and a bunch of plastic spacers to fix various clearance issues with the oversized tires. The m365 gets a massive boost in comfort with ten-inchers, it won't even feel like the same scooter.

Mine really holds about 26 kms. Judging by the mi scooter 3's slightly increased torque it really matters if you wanna go a bit more expensive or save some money by getting the 1s. Removing speed limit uses more motor power draining battery faster, but mine goes to 30 kmh and i arrive home at around 40% considering i go 4 kms 4 times.

They are effectively equivalent. However, if you already know you intend to put 10" tires on whatever you get, perhaps you might want to consider the Ninebot F30/F40 instead; it's effectively the same thing, except with slightly different looks and 10" tires out of the factory.

Yes, mine also when its flat, but this road has a lot of uphill, so it drains battery faster.

I actually have to go over a bridge/flyover to work with it. Distance to work is approx 6km, so i actually just need to travel about 12km but lets say 20km for allowances.

Mi 1s is sort of ok. Should easy do 4km on level ground. Hills or heavy rider - it hasn't got the power. Cheap parts, reliable, but small wheels, no suspension.

Not bad - if all is ok. Get m365 Dashboard app see what it says milage, errors battery info. Not really inspiring but in a year or 2 you might just like it. Put 10" tire on back.

I thought it would handle my weight much better given these are rated to 100kg and I'm about average for my height. For Β£450 new I thought it would perform better.

So did some further testing and managed to resolve the issues. Range is now over 10 miles which is satisfactory (possibly more in flat areas using drive mode conservatively). Re-calibrated battery, reset all settings back to factory and checked for custom firmware.

I'd go with the M2. Xiaomis are great but the stem lock mechanisms though… both my standard m365 and Pro creaked so badly it felt unsafe.

Absolutely not solid wheels. Uncomfortable as hell without an add-on suspension system, and adding that is expensive and adds lots of stuff that needs maintenance and can break. Pneumatic plus slime is a winning combination unless you live somewhere with constant thorns, sharp rocks, broken glass.

Get a good pump - the Xiaomi electrical pump is really great! And check your tire pressure at least once a week - keep it at 50 PSI to avoid flats!

May I suggest a 10" tire kit for your 1S? Costs €30 and an hour to fit, will make a huge difference in comfort.

Sounds like a dashboard issue. Did you ride it in the rain or was there humidity where you left it? If you used something wet to clean the screen then you most likely had water get into the dashboard, which most likely shorted.

I was also just thinking ok if 10 is long then what do I call this trip with 50 km β€” extreme long duration trip.

Any way to do the firmware flash without an android phone? If it comes to it though I'll get a super cheap used one.

No way at all to flash without android, it's an android app only. You will likely also need a stlink to downgrade ble on your scooter to support flashing custom firmware β€” xiaomi tried to block it.

Now suddenly the tail lights turn on when i turn the scooter on, and it turns off, but it turns off after i hold it for 12 seconds, and it just immediately turns off without beeping or anything, i tried restarting it, but it just shuts down again and again.

Nice ride video, the broken up pavements remind me of the ones we have here in Bratislava.
