Summary

The Zero 8 is a budget-friendly entry-level electric scooter that earns genuine appreciation from commuters who need something compact, fast enough, and more capable than basic brands like Gotrax or the Xiaomi M365. Sentiment on Reddit is mostly positive for riders on flat terrain who prioritize portability and battery range — owners regularly report 30–35 km on a single charge. However, the community consistently flags two recurring pain points: the solid rear tire delivers a harsh ride and can slip on wet surfaces, and build quality issues (motor failures, deck cracks) have shown up within the first few hundred kilometers for some owners, though warranty replacements have generally been honored. It sits firmly in the mid-range commuter niche rather than the performance segment, and most experienced riders suggest stepping up to the Zero 9 if budget allows.

Pros

  • Impressive battery range of 30–35 km per charge, roughly 3x what owners reported from the Xiaomi M365, with a 13Ah variant available
  • Compact and foldable form factor at around 18 kg makes it genuinely portable — riders describe taking it on trains and up stairs without much difficulty
  • Full suspension (front and rear) at its price point is a standout feature; owners praise it as one of the best suspension setups available under ~$900
  • Top speed of 34–40 km/h (with the speed limiter unlocked via settings menu — no wire cutting required on newer models) satisfies urban commuters
  • Long-term durability is solid for owners who pass the initial break-in period — multiple users report 3,000–5,000 km with no major issues after early part replacements
  • Seller/manufacturer warranty support has been reliable; deck and motor replacements were shipped out without significant friction for most affected users

Cons

  • Solid rear tire is a known liability — it provides a harsh, vibrating ride on rough surfaces, skids on wet roads, and can feel unstable during sharp turns at speed
  • No meaningful waterproofing — multiple owners explicitly ruled it out for rainy climates, and one resolved their purchase decision based on this limitation alone
  • Deck cracking and motor failures have been reported within the first 200–700 km on some units, which is concerning even when covered under warranty
  • Rear plastic fender breaks almost universally after minimal use; the aftermarket carbon fiber upgrade costs extra and still requires DIY modifications to mount properly
  • Battery access requires disassembling the entire rear suspension and front panel — a labor-intensive repair process that community members describe as genuinely difficult
  • The Zero 9 offers meaningful upgrades (600W motor vs 500W, front hydraulic disc brake, pneumatic rear tire, LG battery) for a moderate price premium — making the Zero 8 a harder sell for riders who push limits

The Rear Tire Is the Zero 8's Achilles Heel

Reddit owners are nearly unanimous: the solid rear tire is the scooter's weakest point. It vibrates on rough pavement, skids on wet roads, and slips in sharp turns at speed. For dry urban commuters it's manageable — for anyone in a rainy climate, it's a dealbreaker.

Is the Zero 9 Upgrade Actually Worth It?

The community debate on Zero 8 vs Zero 9 is one of the most recurring threads. The 9 brings a pneumatic rear tire, front hydraulic brake, and a stronger motor — but also 5+ more kilograms. Riders who prioritize portability stick with the 8; those who ride hard lean toward the upgrade.

5,000 km Later: The Zero 8 Can Go the Distance

Long-term owners reporting 3,000–5,000 km of use suggest that once the early failure window passes, the Zero 8 holds up surprisingly well. One owner is still riding theirs after 5+ years, albeit with reduced battery range. The real risk is the first few hundred kilometers.

Careful you don't kill yourself braking on this in the rain/wet

It won't be the braking, it'll be the lack of a proper mud guard spraying more than just his ass with dirty road water!

I'm in Canada and more specifically, on the west coast in the greater Vancouver area. The 8X model isn't in their usual stock. Way, way, way too much, but I'm in Canada where prices are far more expensive than in the US. I'm actually ashamed to admit what I am paying for it because it is so much. I just really like the zero line of scooters and I wanted a dual motor because...power.

Just got mine last friday and I've already put 100km on it. Other than the soft rear suspension, I'm loving it so far.

I am a new owner of the Zero 8 as well. On smooth surfaces the ride is extremely comfortable, even with occasional potholes (if you slow down of course). I feel safe even when going full speed. The scooter feels very sturdy and the somewhat heavy weight makes for a stable ride. Now the negatives though. I am not that strong so I need two hands carrying this up a larger set of stairs, so I take an elevator whenever possible. The braking to me feels very lackluster, especially downhill.

I'm coming from a M365. It feels much more powerful, and on flat surfaces, it even feels a bit much at times (I don't like going over 35kph on this thing). I do miss having a pneumatic tire in the back, as the suspension is not good enough for my weight (290 lbs), and with the rear solid tire you feel everything. The battery is by far the best part. I got the 13Ah one, and I can get around 30-35 km on a single charge, almost 3 times more than what I got with the M365 (about 12 km).

It's fast enough (and I confirmed that after riding it, it felt like a dangerous speed), slightly smaller, the suspension seems good, price is cheaper, the brakes work decently, but the 9 I think has nicer brakes. Basically it's more than good enough for me and gets the job done. I'll be using it to take on the train and ride to work and also just going to places nearby.

I just did my first Zero 8 ride on a wet surface (not even through puddles) after the rain. My complete backside got wet. Would not recommend.

The light on the charger should turn green when the battery is fully charged and cells are balanced.

I don't have a Zero 8, but an unbranded clone. The 'plastic' rear fender — they are going to be fragile no matter what, that is the conclusion I've come to. I've considered the carbon fiber rear fender and like you, the cost is a major issue. I will be investigating manipulating some sheet metal of some sort to solve this problem in the near future.

My scooter is very similar, altho no problems with motor or deck build quality. I've ridden it in heavy rain and heavy winds (50mph+) no problem (slows me down a lot tho, lol). The rough deck surface isn't so grippy when it gets wet.

Yes, I had m365 previously for 1.5 years. Zero 8 is much much better in every way. You must buy this

I've also got a Zero 8 scooter and found there is a settings menu on the display that you can use to unlock maximum speed without cutting any wires. Simultaneously hold both power and mode buttons for 3-4 seconds, then use the power button to cycle through settings. The setting you want is P8 — set that to 100 and that lets the scooter reach its full top speed.

I asked a YouTuber and he showed in his video how to unlock it. From the cables that come out of your baseplate, you remove the shielding, in which there are two white cables which you have to cut through. Which I did and now have a top speed of roughly 40km/h

Its a good scooter imo. At 175 lbs it will do 34 kph on the flat and push over 50 on a good downhill. The brake is trash as are the lights. Suspension is ok for the speed on a regular road but is jarring and stabby on sidewalks. It's light enough for going up stairs and is fast to collapse.

Step up to a zero 9 or equivalent. The bad part of the Zero 8 is the solid rear tire. While it sounds great on paper and works, not having an additional front brake and with the rear tire tending to skid is a huge downside. Also when you hard turn above 20 you can feel that rear tire wanting to slip on you. Build wise it's fine.

I have owned both the zero 9 and 10 and ridden the zero 8. Zero 8 pros: fairly small, portable, good top speed. Cons: the rear solid tyre, potentially dangerous in the wet and makes for a vibrating ride. One rear drum brake, which is not good enough stopping for a scooter that can reach over 20mph.

I've torn down my Zero 8 a few times. You don't need to remove the griptape — you'll have to remove the entire rear suspension, as the battery comes out the back of the deck, but you'll also have to remove the front panel (where the charger is connected), to remove the controller and disconnect the battery from it. The hardest part, by far, is to put back the controller and all of the cables in the small space where the front panel is.

I've tested both and disagree. I love my 9. But yes the Zero 8 has a slight size and weight advantage but doesn't turn it from something practical to unpractical.

For anybody else checking this review I've had my zero scooter for about 3 years now, coming up on 5,000 km, and I agree with everything this post says, with the added note that after 5,000 km I haven't run into any more issues

I've had mine for over 5 years and am also coming up on 5,000 km. It was branded the fluidfreeride Horizon M. The battery life has come down from 25 miles, but I still get up to 12 miles if I go nice and slow on the flats. With clothes and huge travel backpack, I'm over 100 kg. Sometimes I walk it up steep hills just to preserve range.

I also have a zero 8 scooter and I love it. My rear plastic fender fell off after a couple of kilometres of use. Bought the carbon fibre rear fender from Falconpev website. I had to drill a bigger hole in the metal plate for it to fit, and I used a couple of black cable ties to hold it up so it doesn't fall down. The small screws aren't strong enough to hold it up because of the constant vibrations when riding it. It still makes a squeaky noise when I'm riding.

After riding this scooter for a couple hours I have to say I'm really happy with my purchase. Without a doubt, the suspensions are the main selling point of this scooter at the price of 880€ I paid, it's one of the best suspensions you can get around that price point I believe. Combined with a very powerful acceleration, it's all I need.

You can just waterproof it yourself with some silicone sealant - Falcon PEV have done a video on how to do it! I've also done it to my zero 9 as it rains a lot where I live as well

The only thing with the Zero 8 and why it is more 'waterproof' is because the deck is a solid piece. Which makes repair or changing a battery a nightmare. You have to remove the whole rear suspension and front controller to even get the battery out. And getting it all back in is really hard from what the videos show.

I chose the Zero 9 over the Zero 8 for the higher power motor (600W vs 500W), front disc brake, rear pneumatic tire, and LG battery system. I found the upgrades to be worth it.

I own a Zero 10. Think of it this way — if you think the Zero 9 fits perfectly enough for you, Zero 10 will pump it up a notch or two. The battery alone of z10 vs z9 means that it will take you some serious spins before charging it up. Sooner or later, you will crave for speed.

I was choosing between the zero 9 and zero 10. Was able to ride both. I chose the 9. I wanted to be able to easily put it in my car and take it to places. The 13 lb difference between the two was significant for me. The difference in size between the 2 was noticeable as well. If portability is important to you the zero 9 hands down.

Ok so the deck is a solid piece and the battery and front controller just slide in and get stuffed inside. So basically my idea of tapping off the power is shutdown as I can't fit more stuff into that space.

Nothing wrong with leaving it overnight, it's essentially impossible to 'over charge' it. Happy Scooting.

I've had several scooters including zero 10. Zero 9 is quite a nice blend of comfort speed and portability. ETWOW sport has the best speed portability combo.

The 9 has a motor problem you can not find out about until it breaks. The Vsett9 is the new one and is quite decent though a little expensive. Vsett8 is also a great scooter. Avoid the Zero9 as it's outdated and suffers from motor cables being too thin and they break at the nut causing you to figure out how to replace — not an easy task.

I'm looking at my first scooter as well. And I've narrowed it down to the zero 8x I think. It has everything I want and then some. The price is nearly double that of where I started and I almost bought the ninebot max last week. I held off and someone recommended the zero and I think the 8x is gonna be the one.

Great choice, I think the 8X is amazing looking scooter and has some great acceleration and speed. I ended up wanting a bit more power so got a used dualtron raptor instead for around the same price as a new 8X.

I am in the process of putting a down payment on the 8X model. I'm a total beginner to the world of electric scooters but I wanted to get something that would never make me feel like I was wanting more stamina or power down the road when I have enough riding experience to be zipping all over the place with it.

I was looking at zero 8 as well! It looks almost like a normal scooter but with much more power than a Gotrax, without looking like a Dualtron.

I just tried to cut the wire on my zero 8 — it's actually one wire that folds and goes back into the scooter. I cut it and now can go 40 km/h, thanks.

I went to Home Depot and bought the biggest screws and nuts possible for the holes. Then, you need to use Loctite super glue. Loctite will ensure that the screws and nuts will never move again. And yes, ditch the zip-ties and use 2 thick rubber bands instead. I never looked back since.
