Summary

Crisol: Theater of Idols is a Spanish-developed survival horror shooter published by Blumhouse Games that launched at around $15-17 and immediately earned comparisons to Bioshock and Resident Evil 7/8. Community sentiment is largely positive, with players consistently stunned by the value — a fully-fledged 10-12 hour experience at an indie price point. The standout mechanic has players using their own blood as ammunition, creating genuine tension between combat and survival. Where the game stumbles is performance: PS5 and lower-end PC owners report choppy frame rates and stutters, and a handful of trophy bugs have yet to be patched. The consensus is that it's a rough-around-the-edges gem that punches well above its price tag.

Pros

  • Blood-as-ammo mechanic is genuinely tense — spending health to reload creates real risk-reward decisions that survival horror fans will love
  • Exceptional value at ~$17: players consistently describe a fully-fledged 10-12 hour experience that feels like a $50 AA game
  • Atmosphere and art direction are universally praised — Blasphemous-meets-Bioshock gothic Catholic aesthetics hit hard and feel distinct
  • Spanish voice acting is significantly better than the English dub, and the game is developed by Spanish devs whose cultural references shine in the world-building
  • Weapon variety and upgrade systems open up meaningfully in later chapters, rewarding players who push past the slow prologue
  • Runs well on handheld devices (Xbox Ally X, Legion Go) and Xbox Series X, offering a smooth option for players on those platforms

Cons

  • Performance on PS5 base model and mid-range PCs is rough — users report inconsistent frame rates, constant stutters, and sub-30fps in outdoor areas
  • English voice acting is widely considered weak and tonally off — described as 'AI-like' and 'anime dub' quality by multiple players
  • Difficulty balance is uneven: normal mode feels too easy (especially the second area), with no in-game difficulty adjustment option
  • No chapter select and limited autosave means missing collectibles requires a full replay; one trophy ('Thank You for the Donation') is confirmed bugged
  • The second half of the game drags, with some areas feeling empty and enemy variety being thin despite fresh encounter design
  • Prologue is slow and deceptive — several players quit before the game opens up, and combat starts janky before improvements kick in

Play It in Spanish or You're Doing It Wrong

Developed by Spanish studio Vermila, Crisol's English dub is widely panned while the Spanish voice cast is praised as transformative — players switching audio languages report the game feels like a completely different, better experience.

A $17 Game That Makes Capcom Look Greedy

Reddit users keep pointing out that Crisol delivers more playtime than RE3 Remake — which launched at full price — for a fraction of the cost. For survival horror fans, the price-to-content ratio is becoming the loudest part of the conversation.

PS5 Owners Are Getting the Worst Version

While Xbox Series X and handheld players report smooth experiences, PS5 base model owners are stuck with stuttery frame rates and inconsistent performance that undercuts the horror atmosphere the game works hard to build.

Excited to give this a try later today. It reminds me of those early Xbox 360 era mid budget shooters mixed with Blasphemous' Andalusian Catholicism aesthetics.

Expecting AAA (or even AA) for that price is strange and naive.

I've been loving what Blumhouse is doing lately. I loved Fear the Spotlight and this looks really cool. More budget horror games is always a good thing.

I've been following this for a hot minute, it looks really good. Reviews are saying quality eclipses the price tag, so if you're on the hunt for a Bioshock-adjacent horror game, this might be the one to get.

I've been playing it for a couple hours and for one of Blumhouse's first games it's extremely fun and extremely unique — it's worth the price.

I have been looking forward to this game since I played the demo, and I'm not disappointed! It's a love letter to bioshock and I'm enjoying what I've played so far.

I wouldn't describe anything in the demo as awful, but it does definitely have its issues (performance, trivial stealth sections, kinda stiff controls) that hold it back from true greatness. That said, the gorgeous aesthetics/atmosphere and RE 7-8 style gameplay did make up for some of those faults and kept me interested in checking out the final product. If it cost $30 or more, I'd definitely recommend waiting, but with the base price at about $17 it's a safe buy.

I'm really trying to like this game but it's becoming really hard to enjoy it. Playing on a PS5 and the frame rate is god awful, yellow paint syndrome strikes again and the girl on the radio is so god damn annoying. Just met her in the game and she's even worse. Her attitude really takes me out of the horror as she is way too happy and cheery and the voice acting is like an anime dub — it just seems so different from the tone of the game.

It's a Spanish themed game made by Spanish devs. Play it in SPANISH with English subtitles as intended. Of course the English voice acting is going to be generic and sound like a dub because it essentially IS a dub. The Spanish voice actors are SOOOO much better and actually give the game the flavor it's supposed to have.

Not being someone who can speak Spanish, I figured to set the language to it to match the setting, and I gotta say it feels and sounds 5x better.

I'm playing it and I'm having fun. It is shockingly cheap considering what the game is. The game plays and feels like a 50$ AA game but it only costs 17$ — what a steal.

I like it, but it isn't running too well on my PS5. One gripe: I wish the bodies you absorb didn't just disappear.

Went into this game mostly blind after only seeing a trailer months ago and wanted to love it but unfortunately I quit after the prologue. Performance sucks — on my 3070 Ti I was forced to play at 60fps at 1440p and there was constant fps drops. Combat is generic to start with. The blood system is a cool gimmick though.

I beat it. It's a solid game. The early gameplay is deceptive, it starts to really open up with weapon variety and you can upgrade the weapons and gain some skill perks as well. Enemies were pretty samey but the encounters kept it fresh enough to have fun. It's a solid survival horror shooter with a twist I didn't see coming. Solid 7.5, I'm looking forward to what the team does next.

I just played and loved it, but wish it were harder. I played on normal difficulty and just breezed through. It would've been really nice to adjust difficulty. Especially the second area. It felt empty and super easy. In the third area they add the big window enemy which spices things up. If they added enemies and made it a bit tougher, game would be a 10.

It makes a really good ps3 or 360 game. Gameplay slow and janky. Level design bland. But the art style keeps me interested. One thing I hate, when you absorb the blood of corpses, the corpse just disappears. It would be way more immersive if you left behind a dried husk. Guess they didn't have the budget.

I fucks with the game. Gives me BioShock 1 vibes a lot. Just more darker and ritualistic. Blumhouse did they thing with this. I hope they continue for a sequel.

Been playing it on Xbox. For 17 dollars, I've been enjoying my experience so far. The game feels like a throwback to AA 360 era — it's not perfect but I'm having a good time. Worth price of admission.

I'm on PS5 and the trophy for collecting 30,000 coins won't unlock. I had nearly 40,000 by the end of my first run. Other than that I'm loving the game. I was surprised by the low price — it was well worth the day one purchase.

It definitely feels like a blend of resident evil and Bioshock. The English VA is BAD BUT the Spanish VA is leagues better and actually elevates the game a lot. Makes sense — Spaniard game — and when you switch to Spanish it isn't Mexican Spanish or some other accent, it's authentically Spaniard which is a great touch. Gunplay feels nice, sound design on the guns are good and weapon upgrades feel good.

For the price, the game is definitely worth it. I've completed the first playthrough and will soon be starting the second to unlock all the collectibles. For trophy hunters, I'd like to point out that one trophy (Thank you for the donation) is currently bugged for some. My progress is stuck at 2%.

This is an atmosphere driven game, and it ABSOLUTELY excels at that. It's original and weird in all the right ways. Having said that, it's a bit rough around the edges, but for such a small team, it's literally a miracle it turned out this well. The second half of the game does drag a little though, and some parts of it are way more interesting and eye-candy than others. Some puzzles are infuriating (the stained glass one was horrible).

Intro was a very slow stumble journey, kinda got bored, and by time it picked up some speed I was already disinterested. Felt like it wanted to be a bioshock like game but the combat was very clunky.

It is alright. I'm about 6 hours into it. I'm not getting a lot of horror out of it because so many spots that are supposed to feel scary or whatever are super predictable. The gunplay is pretty janky too. For the price it isn't a bad experience. It's not bad it's not great it's just alright and that's okay.

I'd say it's underpriced for what you get. It's a solid game. Every scene is different and the art style is creative. I'm only a couple of hours in but it's holding my attention so far.

Just finished it. Like a lot of games I play it started out strong and by the end I could not wait for it to be over. Bored to tears. The story leaves a lot to be desired...and the gameplay...sheesh.

Bought this yesterday on PS5 pro. I absolutely love it. It has scary moments, it's gross, shooting is hard which adds to the whole survival horror, graphics are nice, voice acting is okay, music is incredible, performance is not great not terrible. I can't believe it's only 17€ — for that price I was expecting a full linear 3-4 hour game/demo.

About a third of the way in and it's wild how cheap they're selling this for. I was anticipating a couple of hours at most, but it's a fully-fledged survival horror experience — 10-12+ hours. And lots of secrets to uncover. When you consider Capcom charged full price for the RE3 remake which barely ran half the length of Crisol, this is a steal. Graphics, atmosphere and level design are all top notch. Early call for indie horror of the year for me.

I am playing this game. It's one of the infrequent indie shooters that gets released on PlayStation. So far I've enjoyed it. The combat is different. The starting pistol is very weak. The enemies are rather spongy, but I guess that's to add to the tension between needing bullets or life points. I really wish the durability of the knife wasn't so low.

I liked the game. But nearing the end, I felt that the world building was great but the story was not that good, especially if you compare it to a juggernaut like Bioshock. I think they needed more characters and story arcs. The gameplay was alright. Some puzzles I really loved like the conveyor belts while I hated the Domino puzzle.

I'm very excited for it. The art direction and world building look phenomenal. I also really love the idea of having to sacrifice health for ammo — it's a great idea for a horror game mechanic. I just hope the frame rate is decent and doesn't feel janky to play.

A lot of the jank is worked out. I loved it. Once you get further the health ammo balance is a lot more important. I recommend trying it up to the end of chapter 1. Puzzles alone in this game made it great for me.

Man I love this game so far. Gives me the fps single player narrative I've been craving. Big Bioshock/RE4 vibes. It's the 360 era narrative shooter game I've been craving and the art direction is so on point.
