Summary

Cronos: The New Dawn is Bloober Team's original survival horror IP set in a post-apocalyptic 1980s Poland, and Reddit's verdict is overwhelmingly positive — it's one of the most celebrated horror releases in recent memory. The game draws heavy inspiration from Dead Space and Resident Evil, blending resource management, inventory juggling, and tense third-person combat into a package that most players found deeply satisfying. It's best suited for fans of classic survival horror who enjoy deliberate pacing, scarce ammo economy, and an atmospheric world dripping in brutalist sci-fi dread. The story is intriguing but intentionally cryptic, leaving major questions unanswered — a point that divides players between those who loved the mystery and those who felt the final act lost focus. Overall sentiment leans toward strong recommendation, with most criticisms being minor gripes rather than dealbreakers.

Pros

  • Combat loop is highly praised — the charge shot mechanic adds genuine tension to every encounter, forcing players to line up precise shots while conserving scarce ammo, which rewards patience and skill over twitch reflexes
  • Atmosphere is consistently called a standout: the devastated 1980s Polish city of New Dawn, synth-heavy score, and body horror enemy design create a suffocating and memorable world that players wanted to keep exploring
  • Solid survival horror fundamentals — backtracking, inventory management with expandable slots, ammo crafting, and exploration-rewarding level design scratch the classic RE/Dead Space itch in ways Callisto Protocol failed to
  • Strong replayability: multiple endings including a NG+ exclusive ending, and many players reported doing 2-3 full playthroughs voluntarily, with the game unlocking more story depth on repeat runs
  • Running at roughly 12–16 hours for a first playthrough, the pacing stays tight throughout — players rarely reported it overstaying its welcome, and the game regularly introduces new mechanics and environments to keep things fresh
  • The Traveler's voice performance and the dynamic between the MC and the Warden were frequently highlighted as memorable, with the protagonist's arc from robotic to emotionally nuanced resonating with many players

Cons

  • Enemy variety runs thin by the midpoint — the game recycles the same handful of Orphan types with little variation, which makes later encounters feel repetitive even if the combat mechanics remain engaging
  • Puzzles are nearly nonexistent — the game offers almost no traditional survival horror puzzle design, just key-finding and code-entering, which is a significant gap for players coming from Silent Hill 2 or classic RE
  • Inventory management is a constant friction point: mission-critical tools like bolt cutters permanently occupy a slot, weapon ammo doesn't stack across types, and early slot upgrades are painfully slow — leaving players juggling too many permanent items
  • The final act and boss are divisive — multiple players felt the story derailed in the third act, and the final boss was widely criticized as a weak ending to an otherwise well-paced game
  • PC performance issues were noted, particularly traversal stutters in outdoor sections and conflicts with OLED display brightness — the game appears to have been better optimized for console at launch
  • At $60 full price, value is debated — many players recommend waiting for a $40 sale, especially since the game offers no difficulty options and may frustrate players who don't click with its specific combat rhythm

Is Cronos Actually Harder Than It Looks?

Reddit is split on difficulty — some players breezed through without dying, while others hit walls at the first boss and never recovered. The consensus is that charged shots, explosive barrel usage, and not fighting every enemy are non-negotiable skills, and players who treat it like an action game will get punished hard.

The Dead Space Successor Callisto Protocol Couldn't Be

Across multiple horror subreddits, Cronos is repeatedly called what Callisto Protocol tried and failed to be — a love letter to Dead Space that actually nails the resource tension, atmospheric dread, and satisfying combat loop. That comparison alone has driven dozens of Dead Space fans to pick it up.

The Story Is Deliberately Vague — And That's Either Its Best or Worst Quality

The Collective, the Change, and the Traveler's identity are never fully explained, sparking active Reddit threads trying to piece together the lore. Players who love environmental storytelling and ambiguity rate it among their favorite horror narratives; those who wanted closure called the ending a letdown.

Cronos has been almost universally praised from everything I've seen (88% positive reviews on steam, great word of mouth, 90 User score on OpenCritic, etc.). It's a fantastic game, easily bloobers best original. It's a love letter to Dead Space/RE 4, inventory/resource management survival horror games, and they did it wonderfully.

Wait for a sale where it's around $40.

After how lukewarm the reception seemed to be for this game, Noah's ringing endorsement of calling it one of his favorite pieces of horror ever shocked me. I watched this video and spoiled the very cool plot, but kinda wish that I didn't. Sounds like one hell of an experience.

Only thing I disagree with him on is story and characters. I know some people dont like how the MC and certain other characters speak but personally I found it to be a nice stylistic flourish and helps it feel more distinct from other survival horror games. I also think it just helps amplify the mood and tone. I really hope this game gets a follow up at some point, I can see a lot of really interesting ideas and mechanics that are ripe for expansion and polishing.

It's very good, but it's a different kind of horror game. If you like horror games that have a little more bit of "RPG" elements like upgradable weapons, etc you'll like it. If you liked Dead Space it'll almost certainly hit for you. The story is pretty good. I've been a silent hill fan for a long while and I think cronos is better than f (f was still good though)

To me, yes. But 60 dollars means different to different people. It's excellent but I'm sure it'll be cheaper by eoy.

Same. 13 hours in and I'm very very happy with it. Cosmic, horror, cool sci-fi story that's very ominous, and a synth heavy 80s score that just makes me smile. As a huge Dead Space fan, this game gets my recommendation full on.

I honestly went into this game expecting it to be alright but I ended up loving it. The combat, while fairly straightforward, has a decent amount of strategy around charging your gun, using fire and general enemy placement. It is very satisfying. Also The Traveler might be one of my favorite performances of the year.

The inventory in this game is actually horrendous, one of the worst I can think of in recent memories.

It's definitely not as good as silent hill 2 remake and I enjoyed it about the same as silent hill f (just for different reasons). It's still really good though and worth playing, scratches a similar itch to sh2 and alan wake 2, in terms of exploration and gameplay. Great atmosphere and interesting mystery, so you should be covered. Wasn't the biggest fan of the last hour or so though.

Cronos is a really great game but the story is not as good as SH2, SHf, or Alan wake 2. There are also no puzzles in cronos so if you want puzzles in survival horror games you may be a bit disappointed. Also the final boss in Cronos is really bad and a big let down for an otherwise great game. The things it does well though it does REALLY FREAKING WELL. The combat is great and feels like how dead space combat would feel if it was more of a survival horror game and less an action horror game.

I really, really liked Cronos. A lot more than I thought I would. It's not perfect. Enemy variety and boss fights could be better but everything else, it does great. I enjoyed combat in Cronos a LOT more than in SH2R and SHf. The charge shot mechanic is awesome, I feel it adds tension to every counter.

The inventory has been my biggest gripe with the game. The rate at which you acquire new slots is painfully slow and there are SO many things you are required to carry around at all times. The way they implemented the bolt cutters was truly awful. You need them for the entire game so it's essentially just -1 inventory slot. Good luck ever carrying around more than 2 weapons at a time.

I fucking loved it. The game is way better than Silent Hill F. It truly feels like a love letter to hardcore survival horror junkies. It's hard, but not unfair. And the narrative is enigmatic and mysterious, and leaves you thinking because it doesn't answer all of the questions, which I appreciate.

I think game strikes perfect balance between giving you resources (I feel like there is even some adaptive system that gives you more the less you have) but also forcing you to be smart with them and always keeping your wits about you. You can do it, game isn't unbalanced, but you can never get too comfortable. And that is true survival horror for me.

The game is amazing. A couple outlets gave it bad reviews but I think the overall reception has been positive. Personally it's my second favorite survival horror game.

For now I don't feel like anything is missing from the experience. We can create ammunition and healing, manage the inventory and expand it, upgrade the suit and weapons, the atmosphere is beautiful, the combat is more satisfying with controller in hand than seeing it on video. It's also really cool to walk around the devastated city of New Dawn and explore it. The narrative is intriguing and the documents and recordings are also interesting.

This game definitely is worth it. One of the best survival horror games in a while. And I have played them all! I was also surprised reviewers didn't score it higher, but the players love it. And don't always trust reviews blindly.

I enjoyed but didn't finish it. The vibes alone weren't enough to carry me through a story I couldn't get invested in.

Beat it this afternoon. First play through was 24 hours. I really take my time with horror games. A suffocatingly bleak and awesome horror game. I wish the story would have gone in a different direction however.

I finished it the other day and I thought that it was good, like a 7.5/10. Nowhere near as good as dead space in terms of gameplay. Nothing can beat the feeling of cutting off their limbs. One thing about dead space its clones always fail at copying is how good the movement and controls feel. The absolute best part about cronos is its atmosphere.

My game of the year. I'm a massive SH fan but I enjoyed Cronos a lot more than SHf (enjoyed the world and atmosphere of SHf but didn't enjoy the combat at all and thought the story was just ok).

Cronos is good. Not a masterclass in horror, not a masterpiece. Just solid. Worth a pickup for anyone whose favorite gaming genre is horror.

It's great. It's the spiritual successor to Dead Space that Callisto Protocol tried to be.

An ok game to scratch that Resident Evil / Dead Space itch. But no where fun enough gameplay wise for a repeat playthrough. The intrigue of the story kept me going for the first time but the whole plot is a nothing burger and it's hard to touch again. A good game for gamepass / renting.

This game has a pretty cool vibe and a nice atmosphere, but man, shooting and killing in this game is nowhere nearly as satisfying as in other survival horror games, the monsters sometimes felt like they were made of rubber. I think the game could have benefited from some more pieces falling off the enemies.

It's extremely Survival Horror, inventory management and retracing for sure; though so far no maps, which I'm honestly more than ok with. There are kinda puzzles; but so far nothing super complex. Super engaging combat, a mechanic for needing to burn corpses, solid enemy variety even early on. I'm honestly loving it a ton.

I just bought it today, and it's absolutely incredible. Most intense, exhilarating, adrenaline-pumping game I ever played. It's the best game I've played in years. I can't believe no one bought this sleeper of a gem. I was watching people play RE9, and thought that was good, and that there's no way this small developer-made game could hold a candle to that. Boy, was I wrong.

I'm just relieved it's good. After being burned with Callisto Protocol before I'm glad a new survival horror IP has released complete, fun and scary.

Absolutely not. It's too action packed, while also too repetitive. It gets super boring just shooting bullet sponges over and over. Enemy variety is ugly guy, big ugly guy, and ranged ugly guy. The horror isn't really even there. It's more of a shooter with horror elements.

I think it's totally worth it, but that is subjective. It's up there with Dead Space and the more action-oriented RE games. It encourages multiple playthroughs, which, in my opinion, helps justify the price tag.

I'm 5-6 hours into the game and as far as I've played it is worth it, specially if you love slow paced survival horror where you can sink into a nice story. For me its right in the spot between action survival horror (like Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space) and something more slow paced (Silent Hill 2, Signalis).

The atmosphere is excellent... the action is very well balanced... you feel the tension during the game and the relief of reaching a safe zone... Dead Space is my favorite survival horror and this Cronos is pretty close... a 9 for me.

I want to enjoy it but the traversal stutters on PC keep breaking my immersion especially in these half indoor half outdoor environments. Any change to graphics setting during the game just messes everything up till restart.

I love it and gave it an 8/10 but I understand the reviewers with 7's because it doesn't have a ton of variety and does absolutely nothing new mechanically and in game play. That being said it's hard, tense, atmospheric. The game design is tightly crafted, rewarding and the story and boss fights were all interesting. Sound design was simple but highly effective.

Great game. I'd give it a 7-7.5/10. 10hr 45mins for first play through with plenty of exploration. Was a little too easy. Didn't die a single time. The story overall was pretty good, but the direction it took near the end was not great. Great atmosphere. Wish there was more enemy variety.

Gameplay is definitely better than sh2 remake. I honestly think cronos borders on being a survival horror masterpiece. Its basically the same formula as RE4 or Dead Space, just insanely polished and atmospheric.

I prefer Cronos to the SH2 Remake. I love both games. For me it's the combat, Cronos is more action/survival horror with a way greater emphasis on the moment to moment gameplay and combat encounters. SH2 has better puzzles, story. They both have great sound design and atmosphere.

Don't let these young "bros" say otherwise. The game is hard. A little too hard. A difficulty setting should have been added.

I declare this game mid. Huge fan of the genre, love scifi, this game is made for me, but it's still mid. Just kinda boring, combat is boring, enemy variety low, puzzles are generally just 'find the key'. It's a top tier B game, great visual and audio style, that's about it for me though.
