Summary

Dying Light: The Beast is a standalone game built on the DL2 engine, originally conceived as DLC before expanding into its own release. Reddit reception is broadly positive — most players praise the heavy, satisfying melee combat, the return of Kyle Crane, and the scenic Castor Woods map, calling it a genuine return to form after the divisive DL2. The consensus though is that the game punches above its weight as an experience but below it as a product: the map is too small, the story is competent at best, and the $60+ price tag causes real friction given the 25–40 hour runtime. Co-op is well regarded, optimization is strong at launch, and bugs — while present — were addressed faster than DL2's years-long patch cycle.

Pros

  • Combat is widely considered the best in the series — hits feel heavy, gore is visceral, and the melee system rewards experimentation with traps, crafted weapons, explosives, and guns used as ammo-scarce finishers
  • Kyle Crane's return gives the story emotional weight missing from DL2, with specific side quests around his trauma landing genuine emotional moments for series veterans
  • Castor Woods is visually striking — a dense mix of European old-town architecture and forested terrain that many describe as one of the best-looking open worlds of 2025
  • Strong co-op implementation that multiple players called some of the best co-op they've played in the genre
  • Launched in a notably complete state compared to DL2 at release — good optimization, fewer game-breaking bugs, and critical patches rolled out quickly
  • Unique legendary weapons don't degrade, and armor is found as horizontal progression rewards rather than crafted from junk — a meaningful quality-of-life improvement over earlier entries

Cons

  • Map is too small for a full-priced standalone title, with too much open forest and not enough urban density for the parkour system — the grappling hook in particular feels underutilized given the terrain
  • Price is a recurring complaint across threads: $60–$80 depending on region for a 25–40 hour experience is hard to justify against contemporaries like Elden Ring or BG3 at the same price point
  • Beast Mode is undercooked — the transformation is largely useless in combat since enemies don't stagger, and most players end up using it exclusively as an emergency health regen button
  • Story has the same writing quality issues as previous entries: some corny Crane dialogue, a villain who barely appears until the end, and a missable cutscene that explains a major plot point
  • Night cycle lacks meaningful incentive — double XP isn't enough to drag players out when they're already near max level by endgame, a regression from DL2's forced dark-zone loop
  • Post-launch content has been thin: truck skins and a hard mode rather than new quests, events, or map expansions that DL2 eventually received over years of updates

Does Beast Mode Actually Do Anything?

Reddit is nearly unanimous: the signature mechanic of Dying Light: The Beast is the game's weakest link. Enemies don't stagger when you punch in Beast Mode, you can't out-damage a legendary weapon, and the transformation roar summons Virals right as the rage ends. Most players treat it as a glorified medkit.

A $60 DLC or a Genuine Standalone?

The game's origins as DLC for DL2 are impossible to separate from the debate around its price. Players who paid full price lean toward 'worth it but overpriced.' Players who got it free through the DL2 Ultimate Edition upgrade call it one of the best deals in recent memory. The experience doesn't change — the receipt does.

DL2 Veterans Are the Ones Who Love It Most

The loudest praise for The Beast comes from players burned by DL2 at launch. Compared to DL2's years-long patch saga, The Beast launched functional, optimized, and emotionally coherent — a low bar, but one it clears convincingly enough that series fans are calling it the best Dying Light since The Following.

It was amazing. I wish it lasted longer.

I'm not skipping The Beast because of grievances with DL2. I'm skipping it because I bought Battlefield and Arc Raiders so I don't have time for it. I'll probably pick it up next year some time though, because I enjoyed both of the other games.

Good and short, 8/10. Almost no bugs in my playthrough, wish it was longer.

In that case, it should have really been sold at a smaller entry price.

It's nice! I didn't expect much from the story anyway so i wasn't let down by it or anything. But the map sure was lacking. There's just a bit too much forest and too little buildings in this game based around parkour.

I wasn't disappointed at all personally, I felt like I got my money's worth. I had a great time.

The story is good, engaging enough to be the best Dying Light story so far. The parkour is good in my opinion, in a sweet spot between DL1's grounded/heavy feel and DL2 lighter theme, though I found the grappling hook to be a bit useless since the map wasn't really made for it, unlike DL2's city Villedor which was better suited for it. The combat is the best of all DL games and pretty much all zombie games in general. It's heavy, weighty, disgustingly gorey and incredibly satisfying.

Dying light 2 killed a lot of the hype, it was just too cartoony.

It took me about 30 hours to do the main quest + all side missions. I still have collectibles to...collect. I think $50 is a perfectly reasonable price. $60 is pushing it. It's not as beefy as Dying Light 2 content wise, but it makes up for it in quality.

I got Dying Light 2 on launch and it sucked ass, so now I'll only buy a new Dying Light with at least a 70% discount.

For me personally, while I like the parkour and (generally) the combat, I am quickly losing interest in games that require me to collect garbage constantly. I don't find that dynamic fun and it's often needed for item progression in various games.

The most important part for me (and it's sad I have to say this) it's a complete game. Very few bugs. Excellent optimization. Mechanics feel sound and well designed. Well planned out map. My only grievance with it was you never 'feel' weak, but you are very weak to start the game.

I appreciate it not being a 100-hour grind fest like the second game is. I enjoy smaller scale titles like this.

You have 15 hours played because every quest sends you running back and forth between places you've already visited 5 times.

If you liked DL1 you should give this a shot. Techland has put everything they've learned together into a very well polished game. Aside from RE2/4 remakes, it's the best zombie game I've played.

Techland wanted to be greedy by calling this 'A full game'. Its not, it's an EXPANSION PACK. Its funny how they spent so much time bigging it up and now they've forgotten about it. What post content do we have? TRUCK SKINS! 'Hard mode'. They haven't even bothered to put things in pilgrim armoury for it, done a winter event, added new outfits etc.

I like it a lot. I just wish there were more enterable buildings/houses to search with unique interiors. Not just dark zones. In that regard, it still feels a bit copy and pasted. But I love what they did. It makes me hopeful for DL3.

I feel like this is about where I am. I got my money's worth because I got it as part of my ultimate edition DL2 pack. But if I paid 60 dollars I'd be on the side of 'slightly satisfied'. The game world is a bit small and lifeless, but I see Beast more as a proof of concept considering that Techland have said they want to move away from the DL2 format and go back to smaller worlds that are more story driven.

5/10. The game was extremely buggy for me. I had to restart the game a few times because I couldn't progress. The entire ending was the most buggy. Human enemies would get stuck and stay in the same spot and my shotgun refused to work. The night in this game was scary but there is literally no reason why I would ever go out at night.

The Beast lacks in a few departments compared to 1 and 2. Pointless to be out and about at night time. There are no proper tools to parkour. They feel much worse with the one we have. Cars are terrible. It feels so much more limited. I spend more time running and screaming instead of parkouring.

The writing is pure unfiltered dogshit. No amount of quality gameplay won't save the sins of the writers room.

Not worth the 80 dollars, it's map is surprisingly small and doesn't lean very well into parkour especially on some areas, it's meant for driving sure, but I would prefer to parkour from one place to another without driving since there is 0 fast travel.

I can't be the only one that thinks it's still ridiculous post nerf. I'm actively avoiding engaging zombies because I'll just spend most of the time spamming square or out of stamina.

I'm gonna be honest, ng+ and nightmare difficulty should have been in the game at launch. This is the third game in the franchise and it should been a no brainer for these two things be available when it released.

1. It's too small for a standalone game, it could've been an amazing DLC. 2. It's a welcome return to form (DL1), with lots of improvements over DL2. 3. It was fun overall, and still lots of room for improvement, 7/10 IMO.

It's a solid 7/10. Map is too small. The lack of fast travel highlights the fact that there's not much going on with the world map. Civilization areas are essentially just a couple of camping tents with a single vendor. The lack of Faction Wars or having settlements really highlight how empty the world feels.

At no point playing this was I disappointed in what I paid for it. It is a good game in its own right, the fact that it makes me super nostalgic for DL1 is icing on the cake.

It was a great game, but super short. This instalment does make you actually feel like you are actually hitting the infected which going back to play DL2 makes a big difference. I would absolutely get this on sale for those who are waiting.

I beat The Beast on launch, it had issues. Constant monster grabs. The grappling hook sucks. Heat Seeking Virals spawning at random. Broken Day/Night cycle. I love Dying Light, but less and less as time goes on, nothing captures the feeling of DL1.

The Beast released and they have time to improve it. The latest update just released more unique animation kills with some weapons. They took years to come to this level for dying light 2.

First dying light game to make me feel some genuine emotion. The mission with star child that puts a lens on Crane's repressed trauma from the first game made me genuinely tear up.

A lot of the time, you're better off using Kyle's human form. I got to the end with those 3 Chimeras and using it for anything other than regening health is a liability. You rush in punching, but they don't get stunned by your punches and you end up getting beaten to death. Your punches in that mode also don't do that much damage compared to a legendary weapon, so what's the point?

I love the game but I completely disagree, there is nowhere near enough content to warrant a full priced game, it does still feel like a DLC although one that's well made and well written it shouldn't be full priced, I did almost everything and beat the game in 19hrs.

As someone who has come to despise open-world grind, I played this game to its end. Its world is small and dense enough to remain interesting and the game doesn't outstay its welcome.

It is not an incredibly made game, look up the myriad of game breaking bugs reported. Yes grabbing was a huge issue, it was one of the first things they tweaked in an early patch. They do keep updating it, but on release it was a mess.

As much as I enjoy it, no it isn't worth the price. I got the game for basically half the price (because of DL2 ultimate edition) and for that price it's definitely worth it. I'd also say that 50€ would be still fine. But 70€ is too much. Dying Light 2 costs the same and has like 3 times as much content wise.
