Summary

Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream is a top-down isometric stealth-puzzle game from small Swedish studio River End Games that flew largely under the radar despite strong critical reception (85 Metacritic, 81 OpenCritic). Reddit sentiment is broadly positive, with players praising its gorgeous Unreal Engine 5 visuals, compelling narrative, excellent voice acting, and clever NPC behaviors that make the world feel alive. However, a recurring and significant complaint is that the game is less a stealth game and more a linear puzzle game with a single correct solution per scenario — no alternate paths, no player agency. At $40 for roughly 8–11 hours with zero replay value, many players feel the price-to-content ratio is tough to justify at full price, though most agree it's a solid buy on sale.

Pros

  • Stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals with detailed, atmospheric environments that evoke early 20th-century Nordic towns — multiple users called the art direction and cutscene quality AAA-level for an indie title
  • Engaging narrative with strong voice acting; Hanna's role (voiced by Rosie Day of Outlander) adds emotional weight, and the story kept most players hooked through the full runtime
  • NPC design is a standout — guards have unique dialogue, react dynamically to player actions, and feel like real people rather than patrol bots, adding immersion rarely seen in the genre
  • Accessible to genre newcomers without dumbing things down for veterans — the puzzle difficulty curve is well-paced, feeling challenging but rewarding rather than frustrating
  • Demo progress carries over to the full game, lowering the barrier to try before buying — a consumer-friendly move praised by multiple commenters
  • Chapter select with granular sub-chapter checkpoints makes 100% completion and achievement hunting painless, with no missable content stress

Cons

  • Extremely linear with only one correct solution per puzzle — no alternate routes, no emergent stealth, no player expression; critics called it 'an interactive movie with puzzle bits' rather than a true stealth game
  • At $40 for an 8–11 hour experience with no replay value, the price-to-content ratio is the top complaint; a 100% achievement walkthrough clocks in around 6 hours
  • Forced anti-aliasing (TSR/TAA) with no official disable option frustrates PC players — the image becomes blurry in motion, though ini file workarounds exist for technically inclined users
  • Doesn't support 16:10 aspect ratios, making it awkward to play on most gaming laptops despite supporting 21:9 ultrawide
  • Story that starts strong loses steam toward the end for some players — the narrative, meant to be the game's centerpiece, was described by at least one critic as the weakest part of the experience
  • Compared unfavorably to deeper isometric stealth games like Shadow Tactics or Desperados III for experienced genre fans who want emergent problem-solving rather than scripted puzzle solutions

Is Eriksholm Actually a Stealth Game?

Reddit's stealth game community is split: fans of Desperados and Shadow Tactics find Eriksholm too scripted and linear, while newcomers and narrative-focused players love it precisely because it's approachable. One correct solution per puzzle is either a deal-breaker or a relief, depending on who you ask.

$40 for a One-and-Done Experience

The most consistent complaint across multiple subreddits is the price. With a runtime of 8–11 hours, no alternate paths, and zero replay value, many players recommend waiting for a sale — and nearly everyone who did pay full price said they'd still recommend it, just not at that price point.

PC Gamers Are Fighting the Anti-Aliasing

A surprisingly active thread on r/FuckTAA revealed that Eriksholm forces TAA/TSR with no toggle in settings. The blurriness in motion is real, but a community workaround via Engine.ini edits has emerged — and at least one user confirmed it works perfectly after the fix.

I'm on 2nd last chapter of the game. What started as a minimalist cute game turns into an amazing stealth game a few chapters later. Graphics, story, gameplay, voice acting.. Everything is top notch. Gameplay doesn't have too many mechanics like other isometric stealth games but what it has.... Uses so brilliantly. So many scenarios seem impossible until you think a little and feels really rewarding how all characters work together. City feels alive, there's variety of environments, and what developers have nailed is the NPCs. Almost all of the guards in the games have something to say and feel real people always talking to each other and reacting to your actions.

I played the demo, it's 100% a big ol' stealth game. Good fun too, from what I experienced.

Curious to know what games you think have good facial animation, because to my eye this looks better than pretty much everything except Hellblade 2 and TLOU2. The fidelity of the motion capture is really impressive, especially for a small team.

This is pretty cool looking. In particular, the cutscene models look pretty neat. There's a demo on Steam.

The cut-scenes are phenomenal. Looks like the performance capture was done by another small Swedish studio.

Yeah, it works very well on the demo version, even with an old CPU, but disappointing that anti-aliasing cannot be disabled.

Just to be clear, there is no separate option for a scaler, like DLSS or FSR, it just this 'low, medium, high, maximum' option? This is the kind of thing I hate the most about modern PC games. The lack of granularity of settings. I find it amusing when devs brag about all the available settings their game has. That shouldn't be praiseworthy, it should be standard practice.

Not worth 40 euro. Too steep.

As long as we get good games, I don't mind how many isometric stealth games there are. Hope the entire gameplay loop and story is also as good as it looks.

I just finished it myself. Loved the graphics, world building, setting and story. I really didn't care for the gameplay tho, it felt like something on a phone with each character being only able to do one simple action. The stealth genre is my favorite of all to play. I just came off Stone of Madness which I thought was a masterpiece in gameplay and maybe that's why I couldn't be taken by the ultra simplicity of this one.

Stealth is so horribly boring, what terrible gameplay.

I'm sorry, but its a disappointment. Game looks fantastic and has nice story and dialogues, but too short and absolutely streamlined gameplay wise. Devs said its gonna be like movie, I didnt expected its that literal. $40 for less than 10h of simplistic interactions with no variety of choices, no progress, nothing, just narrative and primitive stealth.

Really enjoyed the demo at Nextfest, so I'll be picking it up in the near future.

Pretty sure it's TSR. It's a shame because otherwise the game runs and looks amazing. But the AA completely falls apart in motion.

I'm interested in this title, but $40 for a 10 hour experience is too high of an asking price, imo.

I just finished it and needed to vent lol. I loved the visuals and the story but the gameplay is frustrating, I don't think it is actually stealth nor strategy, it is just a puzzle game with very limited interactions and only one solution, even if there seem to be other plausible options. You have no choices, even though the game sort of looks like you would. I felt it was a bit deceiving tbh.

Just finished the game, while it felt very short, I like to think its a Part 1 of a bigger series.

I'm almost at the end of Eriksholm, and honestly, it's incredible. I wouldn't call it a stealth game in the traditional MGS sense. While it's not turn or slot based, it reminded me of the mobile Hitman GO games, except dialled up to 100 in terms of quality, scope, and atmosphere. The core gameplay revolves around reaching an end point in each level, with enemies scattered along the way. You need to figure out their behaviours then coordinate and time the takedowns between the multiple characters.

I tried it and will buy on winter sale for sure, 40 is a little bit too much which is a shame, cos game is great. But yeah it's unreal 5 isometric eye candy 10/10.

This has elements of Dishonoured, Shadow Tactics with the look of Ghorman from Andor. Wishlisted.

This isn't a stealth game, it's a puzzle game with the trappings of stealth. There's zero degrees of freedom and every puzzle basically has just one correct solution. For a 10 hour (at best) game, $40 is a huge ask.

Just finished this one, great game with a few quirks that were bound to offend a few people. Imho, it's definitely worth a try for whoever's looking for a smallish game in the genre. It's a bit too pricey for my taste, but a defo great buy at a discount. 7.5/10 is what I give it and I'm not taking it back.

I came across this on my steam queue. I have never played a stealth game so was a bit hesitant. Cannot love it more. Sat down to play at about 6pm and finished the 3rd chapter at 10.30. A must have for all gamers.

I finished it recently and honestly found it to be kinda lackluster. The gameplay (albeit extremely simple and linear with no alternate solutions/paths) is generally okay, but the storyline was disappointingly weak, in my opinion. I'm mostly just saying this since the game was meant to be a narrative stealth game, but the narrative is probably the weakest part of the entire experience.

Definitely too high. I just got the game and finished it in 11 hours. There is no replay value considering there aren't any alternative paths to take. Loved the game, disappointed at the price.

It's a blurry mess when you stand still and it's even worse when the camera moves! In what world does a dev test it and think it's okay or beautiful!

The worst thing is that it doesn't support 16:10 so if you want to play on a gaming laptop... it supports 21:9 though.

Nothing to worry about since not only there's a chapter selection option, but on top of that each chapter is actually subdivided into small bits; so no need to replay the entirety of a chapter to collect what you initially missed. Really easy game to 100%.

Played it on PS5, solid gameplay, had me hooked. I'd try to take breaks between chapters to pace myself and found I'd come back a few hours later. Took me the weekend to beat, but I had nothing else planned.

It looks good, has great dialogues and music. But that's it, gameplay is primitive, repetitive and boring. And $40 for just a movie? Thanks, but no thanks.

That lacks authenticity. Anyhow the story halfway failed to keep my interest, the gameplay halfway became tedious, I would probably have carried through if not for the big story failure.

I just finished the demo and I'm waiting for payday to buy the full game. I really like what I've seen thus far. I strongly endorse checking it out. There's a demo — nothing to lose in checking it out.
