Summary

Ninja Gaiden 4 is a collaboration between Platinum Games and Team Ninja that revives a dormant franchise with a new protagonist, Yakumo, while relegating series icon Ryu Hayabusa to a secondary role. The Reddit consensus is straightforward: the combat is the star of the show — fast, kinetic, and deeply rewarding on higher difficulties — but virtually everything else ranges from mediocre to disappointing. Level design, story, music mixing, and enemy variety outside of combat arenas are consistent complaints across both veterans and newcomers. The game sits at an 83 on Metacritic, which feels accurate to how fans actually feel about it: a worthwhile return for the genre that doesn't reach the heights of Ninja Gaiden Black or NG2.

Pros

  • Combat system is genuinely exceptional — weapons, animations, and movesets are praised across the board, with the blood-raven mechanic and izuna drop system adding meaningful depth for players willing to engage with them
  • Available on Game Pass, making it accessible to a wide audience without the $70 buy-in barrier, which has driven a lot of positive word of mouth from players who might have skipped it otherwise
  • Master Ninja mode delivers a brutally punishing experience that rewards mastery — players report the game fundamentally changes at higher difficulties, with guillotine throws and UT management becoming essential survival tools
  • Boss design is generally well-received, with reviewers and players noting more consistency than past NG games — fewer cheaply designed encounters and more memorable fights than NG2 or NG3
  • Full game replayability with either Yakumo or Ryu after completion, plus trials mode and stage select, gives dedicated players solid post-game content
  • The Platinum and Team Ninja fusion works mechanically — the faster pacing and combo expressiveness fit the franchise identity better than many expected given the developer change

Cons

  • Ryu Hayabusa is treated as an afterthought — limited to a handful of story chapters with a single weapon, no new moves of his own, and boss fights that recycle Yakumo encounters; this is the most cited dealbreaker among franchise veterans
  • Level design is uniformly criticized as budget and repetitive — too many interchangeable combat arenas, excessive rail/glide/surfing sections, and none of the environmental distinctiveness of Ninja Gaiden Black
  • DLC monetization is aggressive for a $70 game — Ryu's classic costumes are locked behind a $20 paid bundle, and post-launch content promises only one new weapon per character with no confirmed new levels or trials
  • Story is incoherent by most accounts, with character motivations that don't hold up and a rushed ending — though longtime fans argue this has never been the series' strength
  • Lock-on and targeting system is frequently cited as a combat-breaking flaw — enemies off-screen and auto-targeting that shifts unexpectedly undermines the sense of control that defined the original games
  • 15-20 second loading screens on a game where you die frequently is a persistent quality-of-life complaint, especially on harder difficulties

Can Platinum's Combat DNA Save Ninja Gaiden?

Reddit players are split on whether the Platinum influence elevates or dilutes the series. Veterans who loved the deliberate, punishing pacing of NG2 find NG4 too button-mashy and fast; newcomers and Platinum fans call it one of the best action games in years. The answer seems to depend entirely on which version of Ninja Gaiden you showed up for.

A Great Game Wearing a Franchise's Skin

The most common criticism isn't that NG4 is bad — it's that it doesn't feel like a true sequel. Several high-voted comments suggest the game would've been better received as a new Platinum IP rather than a Ninja Gaiden entry, since fan expectations around Ryu, weapon variety, and difficulty design created friction the game never fully resolves.

Master Ninja Is a Different Beast — And That's Divisive

Players who pushed into Master Ninja mode report a sharp debate: is two-hit death good design or cheap padding? The consensus from dedicated runners is that the mode rewards mastery of the guillotine throw, UT management, and defense accessories — but Platinum's history of cranking damage rather than enemy aggression on higher difficulties has left some veterans cold.

Reviews are all over the place. Some giving it a straight 100, then others 70-80 and handful of 50-60.

Great combat (weapons, movesets, animations), but every other aspect from story to characters to dialogue, level design, visuals and even music mixing have been thoroughly disappointing. It somehow felt outdated even compared to NG2b earlier in the year which is ridiculous, i havent regretted spending time on a game in a good while.

Yeah the game is about an equivalent of a boomer shooter but for melee hack and slash. Very tight and fantastic combat. But they basically put a 10 into that and leave everything else a 3 stat lol.

general vibe so far is that gameplay is great but story and level design is a bit shit. welcome back NG2, welcome back NG3.

But if you complain about the disappointing story you are met with fans who say 'lol, who plays Ninja Gaiden for the story?!'. God forbid they can write something comprehensible for the price tag.

Most places are rolling in between a 7 and an 8, closer to 8 except for a few outliers. It's currently an 82 on metacritic which is good for a character action game. It seems to fall into the same issues as other CAGs though. The combat is godlike, but level design and story are mid.

Best action game since DMC5. No competition.

Saw a reviewer complain because you can use all weapons equally and the game doesn't have a rock-paper-scissors mechanic.

I wonder if they fixed the abysmal camera from NG2 remake.

The strongest game since Black. It's definitely more DMC with a Ninja Gaiden spin but that works so much better than Ninja Gaiden 2's awful off screen projectile enemies. The combat is super rewarding timing combat to be both aggressive while blending in parrying attacks, red attack counter hits through the blood attacks and mixing in izuna drops and swallow strikes in true ninja gaiden fashion.

i've finished a fresh (no ng+) mn run. guillotine throw is wicked strong. if your feet are off the ground and an enemy is in range you can throw them, giving you both iframes and damage opportunities for 1-2 enemies. gt can also delimb.

It's very fast and snappy like a MGR but it makes the game feel more button mashy than deliberate like the past NG games to my biggest regret. It is still fun though, just not what I wanted from a 4th entry in the series.

Have tried the game on gamepass. If you like ninja gaiden then this will be a 9/10 easily. Combat is unbelievable.

It has the same misunderstanding as MN in Sigma 2. Enemies in Master Ninja are supposed to be more vicious, more deadly. Higher difficulties in Ninja Gaiden are about requiring more legitimate skill from the player, not cranking the enemy damage up to ridiculous degrees. They should have buffed enemy counts massively and dialed up their aggression.

I loved this game, feels like MGR and DMCV had a baby. The music especially was insane. Honestly makes me want a MGR remake sooooooo bad.

Complete disappointment unfortunately. It didn't come close to touching how fantastic ng2 was, and the black remake only further highlighted the differences and flaws.

Could've been one of Platinum's best if not for the magnetism and terrible auto targeting that removes the sense of control you NEED in a game like this. Weapons are all samey except for the fourth one and the game is particularly bad once you're Ryu until the end, nothing but repeated bosses and recycled moves, I still can't believe the final boss is just a Yakumo clone.

Insanely fun and kinetic gameplay that echoes Devil May Cry 4 with a techno Victor Borba soundtrack to boost with sleek n pretty character and world designs. I had a great time with it and eager for the DLC. 8.5/10.

Feels like a PS3 game, and thats not a compliment like it is for Evil West or Space Marine. 6 out of 10, at best.

I am flip flopping a lot between 2 and 4. When the credits rolled, I had 2 higher. After spending more time with 4, I put it higher. I know its a cop out, but it's hard to make up my mind right now. They're both so good at different things.

The combat exceeded my expectations, the mixture of oldschool NG with Platinum mechanics works really well. I only have some gripes with the non-combat level design.

I played the first 6 or so levels and dropped it because it was pretty bad. After having not played it for a bit I kinda feel like I could go back and continue it purely for the combat. I'm very mixed on the game because the combat is genuinely fantastic, but for me pretty much everything else was like a 5/10.

it was the most consistent NG game - every previous game had extremely high highs, but also some unimaginable dogshit, mostly certain boss fights. 4 went down much easier, with nothing on that level - the only thing that really dragged on the experience was just the repetitive ratchet and clank rail and gliding sections. but, it also lacked the highs. there were no white knuckle fights in tight corridors, no 'staircase' moment, just a bunch of mostly samey, wide open arenas.

As a huge platinum fan, and only having just played the Ninja Gaiden 2 remake, I was very disappointed. Outside of combat being solid (as expected from Platinum) the game has nothing to elevate it whatsoever. Bland level design, story, and enemies hold it back from being anything other than a lesser Platinum game. If I wanted Ninja Gaiden, I'd play 2, and if I wanted Platinum I'd play Metal Gear Rising. This game does nothing for it to stand out to me.

really fun. only things i didn't like were the level design and the fact that skill unlocks stopped feeling all that impactful after a certain point, which made my progression-minded ape brain sad.

It's got a great combat system for fighting crowds, but I didn't feel like it had the depth of expression that something like dmc5 or even nier automata provides. My favorite thing in a game is great level design, and this game has none. It's similar combat arenas connected by quick time event parkour. I was a little disappointed.

I just gave up on it when I realized I was fighting the camera more than the enemies. The game is just swarms of the same fucking enemies attacking you from offscreen combined with the worst camera I've ever had to deal with.

I never played a ninja gaiden before this one. It did not control like I expected it would, but after a bit I really got a feel for it and it was very fun and satisfying. The story was absolute dog water, but I really had fun throughout.

Really fun, and one of my favorite action games in recent memory. The controls are snappy and responsive, and it definitely has a better 'gamefeel' than NG2 Black (my only other exposure to the franchise, to be fair). The level design was pretty outdated though. It served as a vehicle to get you from one arena to another, which works well enough, but the maps are pretty uninspired overall.

Story is shit. Ninja Gaiden is Ryu Hayabusa, Ryu Hayabusa is Ninja Gaiden. Why do I have to play Yakumo most of the time, an emo child with zero character? Other characters haven't any depth at all, even for Team Ninja standards.

The combat is pretty much perfect (albeit in a very Platinum way). It almost doesn't feel like classic NG at all, however. I would have preferred this game to be a new IP from Platinum. The game is really fun - but it is a bit dismaying knowing that in order to get a fun Platinum game - we had to sacrifice getting the next true NG sequel.

I'm liking the game but it seems like there's a clash between team ninja enemy design and platinum's stylish combo focused gameplay. On hard difficulty I feel like there is no incentive for me to get creative with combos because I get smacked out of the air or otherwise am just too vulnerable during long combo sequences.

i wish there was a difficulty between Hard and MN. A Very Hard mode with MN aggressions and enemy placements but with Hard damage output would be a perfect middle ground before actually tackling MN.

The combat is decent, the level design is atrocious, the story is boring, the music hardly stands out, very few unlockables and post-game content, and there are some noticeable bugs or oversights. Overall a 5.5-6/10. It just doesn't do enough to warrant a spot on most peoples games shelf and the price their asking for it is way too high.

The game is fun for a minute but it's story is boring and makes no sense. The levels are repetitive and in some cases exact copies. Save yourself the money and frustration and wait until it's free on PlayStation or Xbox. This game is nowhere near worth the $70 and very far from the $90 deluxe. This is a $20 game at best.

I have been glued to this game. I'm on chapter 10 and just can't get enough. I wouldn't consider myself a NG veteran so idk how they feel about it but I knew I would enjoy it but so far it's exceeded my expectations. Also you will eventually be able to play as Ryu and have the option of going through the story with just him so maybe that will appease the veterans.
