Summary

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a 2D action platformer developed by The Game Kitchen (Blasphemous) and published by Dotemu, landing an 87 average on OpenCritic with 83% of critics recommending it. Reddit sentiment is overwhelmingly positive — fans consistently praise the tight controls, outstanding pixel art, and one of the best soundtracks in recent memory. It's a love letter to the NES-era Ninja Gaiden games rather than a sequel to the 3D entries, and players who go in expecting a character-action game like NG2 will find something more arcade-like and flow-state oriented. At $25 for 5-8 hours on a first playthrough, the value proposition divides opinion, though the remixed hard mode and S++ rank system provide substantial content for completionists.

Pros

  • Controls and movement are universally praised as tight and responsive — noticeably more fluid than Shadow of the Ninja Reborn, with a fast pace that rewards mastery
  • Soundtrack is a standout: multiple reviewers and Reddit users called it one of the best they've heard in years, with a high-energy OST that fits the breakneck gameplay
  • Hard mode is a genuine content addition, not just a damage multiplier — levels are remixed with new enemy placements and three bonus stages unlock after completion
  • Replayability through S and S++ rank systems requires simultaneous speedrunning, full collectible collection, and no-hit completion of challenges, giving dedicated players 20-30+ hours of content
  • Story is surprisingly solid for the franchise — dual protagonists Kenji and Kumori have strong chemistry, and multiple endings add replay incentive beyond pure scoring
  • At $25 digital, the value-to-quality ratio earns consistent praise, especially given the production quality of the pixel art and animation

Cons

  • Short base campaign — 5-6 hours for a first playthrough is the norm, which is a dealbreaker for players not interested in the score-attack replay loop
  • Charge mechanic (hypercharge system) is criticized by some as a gimmick — large enemies always spawn near a chargeable enemy, making the system feel mandatory rather than clever
  • Boss fights are divisive: some players find them repetitive and damage-spongey, requiring 'hundreds of hits' with little variety in phase transitions
  • PS5 version has documented bugs on the motorcycle level in Chapter 2 — enemies disappearing, player getting reversed, and rare states where the character loses all abilities and requires a restart
  • Normal difficulty is considered too easy by veteran action game players, with hard mode locked behind completing the campaign first (though Ryu can be fought in the tutorial to unlock it early)
  • Not on Game Pass at launch, unlike the mainline NG games and NG4 — a friction point for Xbox subscribers expecting parity

Is the hypercharge system clever design or a mandatory gimmick?

The charge mechanic that lets you one-shot larger enemies divides the community. Defenders say it creates a satisfying flow-state once internalized; critics argue that placing a chargeable enemy next to every tough enemy removes any strategic depth, making it a 'mechanic that exists to exist.'

Ragebound earns its $25 — but only if you play past the credits

The 5-6 hour campaign leaves players split on value. Those who treat it as a score-attack game — chasing S++ ranks in remixed hard mode levels — report 20-30+ hours of compelling content. Those who finish it once and move on find the asking price harder to justify.

The Game Kitchen made a better Ninja Gaiden story than Team Ninja ever did

Multiple Reddit users and at least one reviewer flagged the narrative as the best in the franchise — a low bar historically, but the dual-protagonist dynamic between Kenji and Kumori, set during the NES NG1 timeline, impressed a fanbase that usually ignores lore.

I wrote the review for TheGamer and gave Ragebound a 4.5/5! Absolutely loved my time with it, and I think most NG fans are going to dig it.

About an hour and a half in, absolutely phenomenal so far. The presentation is on another level, the demo already sold me on the gameplay alone but the vibes and music are consistently top notch.

Awesome game, best platformer gameplay ever made, don't miss out.

Having a lot of fun with it, presentation is fantastic as is the OST. Cutscenes are dripping with style and the MCs have great designs imo. The Blasphemous devs are a seriously talented bunch. It plays at breakneck speed and rewards strategic kills.

5 hours is pretty meaty for a 2D side scroller, 7-8 if you take your time and do the different stages and challenges. Super excited to play this, especially now that it's literally swimming in 9s and 10s! Genuinely surreal to have a 2D NG game again.

5 hours is kind of a bonus for me, especially given the low $25 price point. Sounds like it'll be real fun to replay and get good times in.

Got one ending so far and honestly seems a better story than mainline NG games. Pretty solid story, great bosses and overall just feels mechanically good to play. There is a fair amount of replayability and this screams speed runner paradise.

It's very good but very different than 3D games. It is a well made love letter to older NG games with enemies that die usually quickly, challenging pattern recognition bosses, and a continuation of the NG story and characters including a cameo by Ryu Hayabusa.

Beautiful, plays well, banging soundtrack, challenging without being frustrating. Kind of sad that Kenji and Kumori don't appear to be the future of the franchise because they absolutely could carry Ryu's torch.

It's phenomenal. I woke up early to play it before work and got past act 2. It's so good that it has me feeling greedy. It's short and it makes me really want more.

After a few levels, I'm impressed. It's stylish and controls very well, much more responsive than the new Shadow of the Ninja.

God I really want to love this game but I somehow keep running into game breaking bugs where my character can't jump or attack, or be killed by any means and it makes it impossible to actually complete the levels. I have to restart the entire application just to fix it but it's happened to me several times. I'm on PS5.

It's got a pretty long campaign for an action platformer plus collectibles and ranks for replayability plus bonus levels plus a brutally intense hard mode. Level design is amazing and creative too.

They're both worth playing, in my opinion. If I had to choose between Ragebound and Shinobi, though, I would probably go with Ragebound.

I absolutely adored NG:R, as NG1 and 2 for the NES are some of my favorite games of all time. And they did an incredible job with the new one!

Yes, you would love it if you liked the original 2D series. I genuinely believe it's the best 2D entry.

I played it on PC with a controller, it's really good and I don't normally play platformers outside of the 2D sonic games.

I am a huge fan of 2D sidescrollers of all kinds and it was a blast! The real fun comes from making the most of the mechanics it gives you. I really enjoyed the bosses and it has some great action sequences. The characters are dope. It holds up as a Ninja Gaiden game. I highly recommend it.

It is the Ninja Gaiden 4 from the original era that we always wanted but never got. Love it! Love it! Love it!

I liked it, but honestly wish I liked it more. My biggest issue was halfway through the game, the difficulty kinda spikes out of nowhere while not giving you enough player power to compensate, but most of the time it's not unfair.

It's the best Ninja Gaiden thing released in the year of the Ninja but it's not a character action game. Think a more accessible NES style game with an emphasis on score/objectives, flow state and routing. It's like 4-5 hours if you're good, 7-8 if you're doing side stuff, and then double that for the remixed hard mode. Also probably the best story in a recent NG game, though that's a low bar. Certainly one of the best soundtracks.

I've never played the NES games or even any game of a similar style. I bought Ragebound a week and a half ago and it's SO much fun. Goated sound track, and it's surprisingly challenging. Instant buy if on sale, would still buy it not on sale (and I did).

Ragebound is one of the best games to come out this year but it is also NOT 3D Ninja Gaiden. 2D Ninja Gaiden isn't about combos but instead, trying to get from point A to B as swiftly as you can using the game's mechanics to your knowledge with enemies serving more as mere obstacles but still obstacles that are out for your life.

Of the 3 NG games released this year, Ragebound's my favourite for sure. It's a love-letter to old school NG though, so if you're only familiar with the new games then it may resonate less.

The only bad thing about it is that it's short.

I've deadass put 30 hours into Ragebound S++ing all the hard mode levels, and enjoyed myself the entire time. The flow state it can give you is immaculate.

Yaiba sucks, don't bother. If you enjoy fast paced, 2D action platformers, Ragebound rules. I beat it for the first time a few days ago and I loved it.

It's incredibly fun. Controls are tight and levels, enemies, pixel graphics and OST are all high level. Just beat first playthrough and got all collectables in about 6 hours which is short but expected for a game like this. Now what's impressing me is how much they did with hard mode which is clearly meant to be tried for the diehard fans.

I like it a lot. I don't understand people who are saying it feels 'slow'. The movement is quick, the attacks are fast, and the controls are tight. It feels like the OG NES Ninja Gaiden games but with better graphics and movement. Well worth the $20.

Great game overall with a few snags that keep me from being overly enthusiastic about it. My main gripe is the same one I had with the demo: I really dislike the charge system. It's a gimmick for gimmicks sake, which I dislike with a passion. If there's a big enemy, there's always a small enemy with a charge nearby. It just exists to exist, no depth or deeper purpose to it and it actively slows down the flow of things.

The motorcycle level is so bugged. I've had to restart it multiple times. All the enemies disappear or I get turned completely around backwards and then the level just freaks out and I can't continue.

Best thing in the franchise in my honest opinion. It has an actual story and characters and it tries to make those characters grow on you. Kumori even has a bit of a character arc as she slowly becomes a better person. The gameplay is an utter blast. I couldn't put it down. There's a flow to everything you do.

Very very fun, nice visuals, good music, fun action, platform, simple but fun vibes. It's a really good time for its price, good replay value if you're looking for that sort of thing too.

The cool thing about Ragebound (if you enjoy difficult games) is that the game practically doesn't even start until after you beat it the first time. Between hard mode and S++ ranks, there's soooooo much in there. I liked the game a lot in that first playthrough, but the stuff I've done after has made me really love the game.

It's ok. Amazing aesthetics, great soundtrack, my favorite story in the franchise. The gameplay itself is solid but the actual game design is kinda mid. I enjoyed my time but found it went on too long and would have been better served with more care taken with a smaller amount of levels.

Everything about this game is basically perfect, except for one tiny thing that ruins the whole experience: the damage you deal. ISTG, it feels like you're fighting with a toothpick instead of a sword. A lot of stuff that should be one-hit sometimes requires not even 2, but 3 hits. And for bosses you do chip damage at most.

Ragebound is good, although too easy on the normal difficulty, specially if you equip the buffing amulets. You can unlock hard mode early by defeating Ryu in the tutorial, which I think is worth doing.
