Summary

SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide is a 3D platformer developed by Purple Lamp and published by THQ Nordic, available on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive, with most players calling it the best or second-best SpongeBob game after Battle for Bikini Bottom, praising the dual-character mechanic and writing quality. The game's biggest recurring criticism is its short runtime — most players finish it in 10–15 hours — which makes its full price feel steep to some. Performance on Switch 2 is a notable sore spot, with frame drops reported in both demo and full game, while PS5 and PC versions are regarded as smoother. OpenCritic puts it at 74 average with 50% recommendation rate, reflecting a solidly good but not exceptional critical reception.

Pros

  • Dual-character switching between SpongeBob and Patrick adds genuine mechanical depth — each has distinct abilities including air kicks, bubble throws, hook attacks, sand crawling, and i-frame dodges that keep combat and traversal fresh throughout
  • Writing and voice acting are a clear highlight — original cast is back, and multiple users describe the narrative as feeling like a proper SpongeBob movie with series-peak humor and character work
  • Gameplay feel is widely described as the best in the franchise, with tighter movement and more rewarding collectibles compared to The Cosmic Shake's repetitive 'go back and find X' loop
  • PS5 and PC performance is solid — occasional dips late-game on PS5 but generally smooth, with UE5 optimization praised for a licensed game
  • DLC approach well-received: additional levels coming post-launch, timed to coincide with the movie, seen as a fair model rather than content cut from the base game
  • Pre-order bonus available separately for $2.99 — Reddit praised the lack of FOMO gating, calling it a consumer-friendly practice

Cons

  • Short runtime is the top complaint — most players finish in 10–15 hours with 100% completion, and some report as few as 5 hours on a straight playthrough, making the full $40+ price hard to justify for some
  • Switch 2 performance is inconsistent — demo dropped to ~15fps in some sections, and full game still stutters in heavy scenes; multiple users recommend PS5 or PC versions instead
  • Post-story content is thin — optional arena challenges and slide races from Plankton are disconnected from main levels, and there's no equivalent to BFBB's spatula-hunting as meaningful post-game content
  • Time trial slide races are divisive — some find them frustratingly precise with razor-thin margins, requiring near-perfect runs and trial-and-error discovery of hidden paths
  • Pacing issues and linearity are more pronounced than predecessors — Sandy in particular is cited as underutilized, and level variety creates uneven flow
  • Cutscene timing bugs noted — dialogue pauses and delays in cutscenes described as distracting and janky, a regression from the polish of BFBB Rehydrated

Best SpongeBob Game Since BFBB — Or Just a Shorter One?

Reddit is split between players calling Titans of the Tide the mechanically best entry in the franchise and those who feel the compressed runtime undercuts what could have been a true successor to Battle for Bikini Bottom. Both sides agree the gameplay feels great — the debate is whether there's enough of it.

Skip the Switch 2 Version

Multiple threads flag Switch 2 as the weakest platform for this game, with frame drops hitting as low as 15fps in the demo and stutters persisting in the full release. PS5 and PC users report a noticeably smoother experience, and several commenters explicitly advised against buying on Switch 2.

The SpeedRunning Community Already Clocked It at 39 Minutes

A any% speedrun at under 40 minutes surfaced on r/speedrun shortly after launch — which, for a $40 game, tells you something about how linear the critical path is. Fans who came for 100% completion still find enough to do, but value-seekers are better off waiting for a sale.

Spongebob becoming a legitimate and consistent platforming franchise is wild to me, but I'll never complain about it.

You could also add the spongebob squarepants movie game that released for ps2. It was in the same playstyle as those.

Battle for Bikini Bottom (along with other Heavy Iron gems from that era like Night of 100 Frights) is a deeply special game to me, so Rehydrated even existing still feels like a pipe dream come true, let alone this whole resurgence of modern day Spongebob platformers. Nothing makes me feel like a kid again quite like these games. Will probably wait for a few patches first (sounds like a similar deal with how Rehydrated/Cosmic Shake launched, needed a bit more time to polish things up) but super excited for this.

Battle for Bikini Bottom is much more a collectathon than the others. Cosmic Shake and Titans are more in the style of the Movie game (which I really wish would get remastered).

If this game is as good as Battle for Bikini Bottom, it will be a great game. Battle for Bikini Bottom is still by far the best Sponge Bob game.

Congratulations to SpongeBob for outlasting Crash Bandicoot as a relevant platformer mascot.

This game feels way better to play than The Cosmic Shake. But the game is very short, and the level variety leads to a lot of odd pacing issues and a hefty amount of linearity. Especially when it comes to how they use certain characters. Sandy especially. But if you just want a fun game that FEELS like a SpongeBob movie with the pacing and writing of the show's heyday, this game DELIVERS.

The demo was pretty fun, the voices are great and the writing feels like a solid episode from the shows' heyday. I'm probably gonna get the full game for myself and my kid soon enough.

Cosmic Shake while a bit janky wasn't too far off quality wise from Battle for Bikini Bottom and this looks pretty much in line with that. One of the better non-Nintendo 3D platformers I've played in a long time, so I'm optimistic.

Those are the primary modern ones, yeah. I appreciate Purple Lamp focusing on new games, but I would gladly take a remake of the movie game in the same style as BfBB Rehydrated.

Just like The Cosmic Shake, I really like the team behind this one because you can tell they enjoy the source material, understand it, and give it lots of justice. I think this game took everything that was great about its predecessors and improved on it (I'm honestly quite impressed with the gameplay from Titans of the Tide, which I'd argue is the best in the franchise)

Maybe in the PS5 or other consoles but it runs significantly worse on the Switch 2. Disappointing that a SpongeBob game can't run decently when other more demanding games run better. Gonna buy this on the PS5.

That's especially disappointing given both bfbb and cosmic shake run on phones.

I just beat it on PS5 there is some occasional dips especially towards the end with a lot of stuff on screen. But overall it stays pretty smooth.

it's even better than cosmic shake to me plus i see why they did the dlc route. they had to put it out around the same time as the movie but we still get more levels out of it in a couple months. works for me

Honestly, I'm so glad the Battle for Bikini Bottom remake has led to all these new sequels in a similar style. I actually like that Titans of the Tide and The Cosmic Shake are more linear based too.

I'm having lots of fun with it. My only minor takeaway is that it's the same gameplay loop (for Spongebob) as BfBB and Cosmic Shake, but otherwise it's still really good.

There's a quality and performance mode, but performance mode in the demo has issues. The game struggles to hit 60 fps in levels, feeling more like 40-50 fps. It's only stable in the hub world and the first tutorial.

I think it's one of the better platforming games I've played in quite some time. It's got somewhat challenging puzzles, and it's family friendly. 7.5-10 all day. Definitely one of the better SpongeBob games released in recent memory.

Titans of the Tide is really good! I liked it better for reasons different than writing. I loved how utilized Patrick and Spongebobs abilities were, and the fact that you could play with Patrick. Helped diversify the lines a little more. It seems like most complaints people had regarding the smaller annoyances were fixed.

I played the demo yesterday and really took my time and explored and kept collecting coins and when I was collecting trash in the water the frames DROPPED and the game ran super super slow even just walking.

Titans of the tide was such a disappointment compared to battle for bikini bottom and cosmic shake. Such a short game comparatively, it was not as fun.

This game felt weaker to me than bfbb and cosmic shake. I 100% both of those games but I have no drive for this one. Something about it feels more janky than the others.

I liked this one way more with the switching back and forth and the platforming challenges. This felt like it got closer to BfBB and the Movie game for me.

I would disagree. This game is very short, filled with lots of bugs and glitches, and the time trial slide races are far too difficult where when beaten, you have less than a second to spare. I had fun playing it, but I was finished in 10 or 11 hours. This is far too short for the price. The glitches and bugs are frequent.

I have a switch 2 and steam deck and the steam deck looked better and was also smoother. Got constant 45 fps on steam deck.

The flow in this game (both the movement and pacing) is way better than the cosmic shake. It's just a shame it's so short I feel like they could've made a few more detours. I think the collectibles are way more rewarding too — cosmic shake always 'go back to the level and find x number of things' which is kinda lame. This game is much closer to the bfbb sequel I always wanted!

There are technically several optional sidequests and time challenges but most players just usually do them right away once the game gives them. Plankton will also give you several optional arena and sliding challenges but they're disconnected from the main game levels. Out of all Spongebob games it's by far the most similar to Movie Game.

I heard it's more on par with the movie game and Cosmic Shake. Idk if even $26 is worth it imo. Not that I can't afford it, but I just feel I can put that money towards better games that are on sale. If anything I'll wait for a better sale like $10-$20 — cosmic shake has been $10 when on sale since last year.
