Summary

The First Berserker: Khazan is a soulslike action RPG from Nexon that has earned strong praise from the Reddit community, particularly for its combat system and boss design. The consensus is that it plays closer to Nioh than traditional FromSoftware titles — fast-paced, aggressive, and combo-driven — with many calling it one of the best combat systems in the genre. Where the game falls short is in its level design, enemy variety, and art direction, which most users describe as mediocre or average. It's best suited for fans of Nioh and Sekiro who can tolerate linear missions and repetitive environments in exchange for exceptional boss fights.

Pros

  • Combat is widely considered a standout in the soulslike genre — fast, aggressive, and combo-heavy with a Nioh-inspired stamina and parry system that rewards mastery over many playthroughs
  • Boss fights are the clear highlight, with multiple users calling the roster 'brilliant' and 'some of the best bosses I've fought in a soulslike' — multiphase fights that feel like a dance once you learn the patterns
  • Multiple weapon types (greatsword, dual wield, spear) each have distinct skill trees and playstyles, offering meaningful build variety especially in NG+
  • Difficulty settings accommodate different players — easy mode significantly reduces damage and increases stamina, while a locked 'hardcore' mode exists for veterans; demo progress also carries over to the full game
  • Gear system supports deep build crafting via set bonuses, jar helmets that reduce set requirements, and elemental consumables that exploit boss weaknesses — rewarding players who engage with it
  • Cel-shaded art style and cutscene quality are praised, with voice acting (Ben Starr as Khazan) frequently highlighted as a standout production element

Cons

  • Level and world design are consistently called mediocre — linear mission-based structure, uninspired environments, and repetitive enemy placement make exploration unrewarding
  • Enemy variety is limited and thematically monotonous — one user described progressing through 'just humans, then just lizards, then just spiders,' making non-boss encounters feel like padding
  • The gearing system can feel redundant for players who lock into one armor set early, since 6-piece bonuses dominate and the augmentation/reroll system is convoluted and time-consuming to manage
  • Gold and consumables feel largely useless for players who don't actively engage with elemental weaknesses or the crafting economy, creating a sense of wasted systems
  • The recently added female Khazan (Khazan F) option skips in-game cinematics and mutes some dialogue, making it a half-implemented feature that some users find frustrating for a first playthrough
  • Default difficulty labeling was changed post-launch (former 'easy' became 'normal'), which invalidated many early guides and confused returning players about damage numbers and resistances

Is Khazan's Combat Good Enough to Carry the Whole Game?

Reddit players consistently say yes — the boss fights and combat system are strong enough to overshadow weak level design, repetitive enemies, and a middling story. For most, learning a boss's patterns over dozens of attempts is the core loop, and Khazan delivers that in spades.

Nexon Made a Nioh Game, Not a Souls Game — and That Matters

Players coming in expecting Elden Ring exploration and world design often bounce off hard. Khazan is mission-based, loot-driven, and stamina-management-focused — closer to Nioh 2 than anything FromSoftware has made. Knowing that before you buy is the difference between loving it and refunding it.

The Gear System Is Deep — But Only If You Actually Use It

The most common complaint about Khazan's loot — that it becomes pointless after finding one good set — comes almost exclusively from players who never tried mixing sets, jar helmets, or elemental builds. Veterans with 100+ hours report constantly swapping gear in NG+ for meaningful build variety.

Trying out different playstyles is not 'reinventing the wheel'.

Anybody who said Elden Ring was easy is lying. Sure there were ways to make it less strenuous, but I wouldn't classify it as an easy game. Especially the DLC. I'm excited to play this game!

You have until that circle gets to the very very end to input the brutal attack, therefore you should prioritize doing as much damage as possible within that window and only go in for the brutal attack when it is just about to end. That way you get all of the damage from your combos and you also get health and stamina back while finishing it off with a bit of extra damage.

It's the best souls-like that came out this year for sure. It has nioh like elements and has a significantly more fast paced combat that requires you to be much more aggressive. The combat and bosses are the selling points of the game. Level design, story etc are all mediocre. But bosses are brilliant. It's absolutely worth a try if you like souls-like combat, although it will take some time to adjust.

This guy hated his playstyle and then hard committed to it early in the game and never changed?

Worth remembering that the dominant narrative on every souls like on release is 'this one is really, really hard,' until people start beating it. Then the story becomes, 'that was actually really easy.' Story old as Demon's souls.

Sounds like you just didn't really care to engage with the loot and try different things. You can get the jar helmets, which reduce the set requirements by 1 which actually opens up a lot of possibilities. I don't even think the beastmaster is considered the best for a whirlwind heavy gameplay style. I used at least 4 different armor sets in my first play through.

The gear is meant to encourage you to try different playstyles. You already found your playstyle, obviously other gear that uses other playstyles will be useless for you. Point C — you don't instantly use brutal attack as soon as the red circle shows up. You hammer your combo and by the time the red circle almost expires, then you do brutal attack. You will recover a huge portion of your stamina and skill point.

This game was surprisingly great. This and Lies of P are just insanely good soulslikes that may even be better than FS? Heresy, I know.

Not just a damn good game, but a smart one. Beyond the worldbuilding and gameplay loop, it's clear a helluva lot of thought has gone into the design of the game. This is a release that understands which Soulslikes work best and why. Sure they've slammed a couple of elements in that not everyone is going to love (lootfest, parrying, a desperate for attention hub), but nothing that gets in the way of being able to play the game and keep moving. They have a lot to be proud of.

I highly recommend it to anyone who liked Sekiro. It is the closest combat-wise of any game I tried.

I think you can quite easily argue they do combat and some quality of life features better than From's stuff, but I still think that in terms of enemy design, atmosphere, and level design From is unmatched.

The game is incredibly fun and satisfying imo. More like Nioh than souls, but if you enjoy souls games or Nioh you will likely enjoy this. Although the level design was only average to good, the combat and boss fights is where this game REALLY shines. Although overall it cannot quite compete with the overall package of a fromsoft game, but its combat matches or even exceeds fromsoft (but in a different, faster style).

Not wanting to try different builds and stubbornly sticking to one set does not mean the game has a problem with loot/gear...it means you have a problem with trying anything outside of your box.

A FOMO login reward in a purely single-player game. Coincidentally also ending on the same day where they will implement (allegedly) proper regional pricing on Steam/PS5. Legitimately one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of, but I guess it is NEXON... At least female Khazan seems to just be a thing added to the game, not part of the FOMO nonsense.

The only real issue is this ridiculous augmentation system and no option to segregate gear by name (but the devs are working on that, I've heard); I'm sure I spent at least 1/5 of my game time going through my inventory lol. Other than that, level design could be better, yeah, but still, it's okay and overall it was a great game to me. Very challenging, but fair.

I'm 20 hours in and on the 6th boss. It's hard. Real hard. I have the bloodborne and Elden ring platinum. But just like with those games with dedication you can beat it. I fucking love it. It's closest to Nioh.

This game is great so far. I've beaten the first three bosses and they've kicked my ass, but I managed. What I like, however, is the sense of progression. When you die from a boss, you still get experience for the fight. You also can collect your essence before the fight. So if you're struggling you can still level up. Moreover, you continue to get skill points, so you can upgrade your weapon skills. I think that is a great mechanic.

Great game. Buy it. Best combat out of all souls games/likes ive played. Level design / world design and enemy variety could be better, but boss roster is awesome.

This community is allergic to acknowledging this game as anything other than a 10/10. For every high this game has it has an equal or greater low. It's a very very solid first attempt by the company but it is by no means perfect.

Best combat and bosses i've played in a souls like. Pretty generic level design and some funky inventory management were the only two issues for me.

I haven't had this much fun with the fights since Sekiro. It's a mix of Sekiro and Nioh and they did a great job.

I have about 25 hours into the game, and beat several of the bosses and I gotta say I'm really hooked. The level designs are pretty good, and I think after playing enough you do see some repeating themes, but the best part is the combat, especially fighting bosses. The bosses can be really difficult but as long as you're patient, you'll pick up their patterns and start seeing yourself improve.

Really enjoyed it so far, it's definitely tough though! It's never felt unfair, it's always a mistake I do when I die. However it does feel like they have a lot of health, fights feel really long. But I'm still pretty early, not optimized build yet.

A good soulslike, good bosses, good gameplay (this game has one of the best combat in all soulslike) but all the zones in the game are soulless, repeating mini bosses all over the game, story somewhat interesting but mediocre at best. 7/10 for me, if it's on sale buy it, otherwise don't.

It's amazing for combat. Everything else is mid, but the combat is genuinely so good it makes the game amazing. If you have a soft spot for cel shaded games that also helps.

I really wanted to play it because I love soulslikes, and there aren't that many of them. On top of that, everyone says the game is good, and the Steam reviews say the same. In the end, I bought it a couple of weeks ago, but after 10–15 hours of playing I deleted it, because for me the experience was pure torture. The enemy and location design is unbelievably boring.

Honestly it's way too sweaty. Had no problem with the intro or blade phantom but then got to the second portal and the game took a massive nosedive in terms of quality and engagement. Everything is a gank with constant status effects, and boss fights are honestly just deflating. Nothing like fighting perfectly for a solid 30 seconds only for the boss to jump back and re heal their entire stamina bar in 3 seconds. Health pools are way too big, crafting system is useless and store is actually trash.

I don't understand the overwhelming praise either. People saying it's as good as Elden Ring or Lies of P in steam reviews? Laughable. The environments and enemies are dull and repetitive. Health pools are way too big. The difficulty feels artificial. This game made me truly appreciate how balanced Fromsoftware games are, and how incredible their world building and art direction are.

There are so many specs and abilities and possibilities... It sounds to me like you sort of wandered past it all because you had a mid 6 piece bonus and stuck with the 1 weapon. I'm 150 hours in on NG+ and am having a very good time playing with all the new skills offered by epic gear.

I like the game but am getting burnt out on how many developers now days are going into a game first and foremost to try to outdo FromSoftware with the difficulty. It's beyond old and stale at this point. Especially with how lazy developers who make Soulslike games are with bosses. Delayed attack, delayed attack, uber delayed attack.

Excellent combat and decent bosses. Uninspired level design, boring enemies, and incoherent art direction / world design. If you really like souls games it's a solid recommendation from me if you find it at a good price. If you only like souls because of Elden Ring, it's mid.

An amazing hybrid of Sekiro-like and character action game. It's neither, but has elements of both that create something unique. It's one of my favorite games of the last several years. If you're into long awesome (and hard) boss fights with lots of parry and perfect dodges that create a dance, this game is for you. If you want deep open world exploration and lore, with complex, rich areas to lose yourself into...the game is NOT for you.

Being that Nioh 2 is one of my top 3 games of all time, this game feels like a thank you note to it. It's Nioh but while not as deep, a lot of the kinks are ironed out. If you haven't tried Nioh, you might like it, but you should be prepared to be more aggressive than normal souls gameplay.

I'm giving it a straight 9/10. Its only weakness imo is the level design and it's not that bad, just very average, and the anime cel shaded artstyle.

It's much more manageable on easy mode. Viper, the boss everyone is talking about, was tough but only took five or six tries to beat on easy. I'm sure it would have been double, triple that on normal. It gives you a huge stamina boost which is huge in a game based on parries and stamina management. Bosses hit way less hard.

Sekiro was the only souls like that made me actually enjoy every encounter, in a way where once you learn the pattern you felt like everything just slows down like an anime arc. Same feeling here with the bosses. Artstyle is dope and I'm playing on triple screens which it renders beautifully.

I absolutely love this game, but it's crazy that they made the easy difficulty now the 'normal' difficulty in the game. New players will start playing the game on normal, not knowing that this was the former easy difficulty. Why not simply call it 'beginner' - 'easy' - 'normal' and 'expert'? Plus this makes a lot of guides worthless, because they were all made with the former normal difficulty in mind.

I wasn't feeling the demo at all. It didn't do enough for me and didn't feel as good as lies of p or stellar blade. I also really dislike the art direction. All of the environments are boring as hell to look at. The combat was fine. The starting weapon you use wasn't really fun.
