Summary

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a solid package for classic TR fans, developed by Aspyr and released February 2025 across all major platforms. The collection is generally praised for preserving and improving the first two entries — The Last Revelation and Chronicles — while Angel of Darkness remains a divisive inclusion that received noticeably less polish than the rest. The remaster quality is considered a step above the I-III collection, with improved textures and controls that make even the roughest games in the trilogy approachable. It won PlayStation's Players' Choice award for February 2025, which speaks to its reception among the fanbase despite mixed critic scores averaging around 71 on OpenCritic. This is a purchase recommended for series loyalists or curious newcomers willing to experience the full arc of the classic era.

Pros

  • TR4 (The Last Revelation) received exceptional treatment — textures, lighting, and control improvements make it arguably the definitive version of what many consider the best classic Tomb Raider game
  • Modern control scheme works well for TR4 and TR5, carrying over the smooth improvements from the I-III remaster with additional responsiveness improvements like faster camera unlock
  • Angel of Darkness is now fully completable — major bugs have been eliminated, cut content (tutorial area, shop systems, Kurtis moveset) restored, and dual pistols added back in
  • Chronicles benefited unexpectedly from the remaster, with game-breaking end-game bugs fixed and clean visual improvements to its moody, episode-style format
  • The package supports both classic tank controls and modern controls simultaneously, letting players switch freely — important for a trilogy with three very different control generations
  • Won February 2025's PlayStation Players' Choice award, reflecting genuine enthusiasm from the fanbase despite the mixed critical reception

Cons

  • Angel of Darkness still has fundamental issues — the camera is largely unchanged, physics cap at 60fps due to engine constraints, and the control scheme for AoD's modern mode remains clunky compared to TR4/5
  • AoD's visual remaster is noticeably thinner than the other two games — many character models untouched, missing reflections and water effects, with some players preferring the original's grungier aesthetic
  • TR4 is an extremely long game and can turn into a slog — particularly the Cairo section, which has historically stopped players from finishing it even with a guide
  • Critics largely reviewed the original games' flaws rather than the remaster quality, dragging scores down — OpenCritic average sits at 71 with only 50% recommending, which undersells it for fans of the originals
  • No tutorial prompt updates for the new modern control scheme — players switching to modern controls get no in-game guidance on new inputs, which is especially confusing in AoD
  • TR5 (Chronicles) is very short and was clearly made by a burnt-out team, feeling more like disconnected DLC than a full entry — the remaster doesn't fix the lack of cohesion

Angel of Darkness: Still Rough, Finally Playable

AoD's reputation as a disaster hasn't fully changed, but the remaster removes the bugs and crashes that made it genuinely unfinishable. Cut content is restored, dual pistols are back, and while the camera and controls still have issues, Reddit's consensus is it's gone from 'terrible' to 'okay' — which is a bigger deal than it sounds.

Critics Scored the Games, Not the Remaster

The 71 OpenCritic average frustrated fans who felt reviewers spent more time critiquing 25-year-old design decisions than the actual remastering work. The remaster quality itself — texture work, control improvements, bug fixes — is widely considered better than the I-III collection. The score reflects the source material ceiling, not Aspyr's effort.

TR4 Is the Real Reason to Buy This Collection

The Last Revelation has always had its defenders calling it the apex of the Core Design formula, and the remaster finally gives it the presentation it deserved. Infinite saves, refined controls, and improved textures make what was an obscure slog accessible — and several first-timers on Reddit admitted it's now one of their favorite games in the series.

IV-VI definitely aren't known for being high points of the series, but the fact that Aspyr remade them anyway is just feel-good. Anyone looking to play through the series, warts and all, now has an easy, affordable way to do so. Overall a good thing for the franchise.

I agree for Chronicles and Angel of Darkness but The Last Revelation was a high point of the series.

Growing up in the late 90s/00s, the Last Revelation was considered peak Croft. What they did with that game on the hardware at the time is insane.

AoD is looking real nice. Honestly I think I'm gonna jump straight to AoD because I seriously can't wait to see how it plays.

4 is like riding a bicycle. With square wheels. While a serial killer gives you chase. Also, you're in hell. 5 is, quite frankly, the easiest of the original five games.

They actually have done a fair bit for Angel of Darkness with a lot of cut content placed back in such as the optional introduction tutorial area, shop systems and additional Kurtis movesets. The said most of the additions will really only be for either tomb raider fans or for late stages of the game. The sheer amount of bugs the original had isn't a problem at least which was one of the main issues the original had so I would argue it's no longer a terrible game and bumped up to 'okay'.

The Last Revelation is such an incredible experience, I can't wait to relive it. The tombs were so damn expansive, I remember spending hours in some levels. I also loved how so much was interconnected.

The quality of the remaster job is significantly better than for 1-3 but the games themselves are kind of dodgier in my opinion. Last Revelation is ambitious but kinda confusing and sometimes too dull. Chronicles feels like a watered down version of tomb raider 3. Angel of Darkness is an unfinished mess. 4-5 got more comprehensive remasters while AoD only really got some relatively minor polish. But the improved controls makes AoD feel okayish instead of terrible.

Learning that they didn't really do... much to Angel of Darkness sucks. It's one thing to have a rough game in a re-release collection, and it's another to have a known disaster in your compilation and... at most bring some sections of the game to a 6/10.

In my opinion, 4 is the hardest one. The puzzles are so obscure, and the level design is so confusing with the interconnected levels!

The Remasters are great if you want to play them casually, all 1-6 are in their best version and completeness. Patch 1 for IV-VI significantly improved AoD and I am a very happy customer.

I hate to nitpick at all because I adore the games and I am so happy to have them, but my only gripe is the lighting. I hope if they do a series of patches like they did with the first 3, a priority should be a brightness slider. Beyond that, I am so impressed! When I loaded into TR4 for the first time, I literally gasped. In my opinion, you can tell the textures and lighting are a cut above the first remasters.

Most of the flaws are still there. However, the game is definitely playable now as opposed to having to download patches and fight the tank controls. The modern controls are a bit better but still don't fix her jump and the clunkiness behind platforming. I will say, if you're interested in 4 and 5, it's the best state they've ever been in.

4 is good, but drags too long. If you don't mind a VERY long game in egypt, it's your game. 5 is visually the best remastered game, but VERY short. Basically the opposite of TR4, but the locations are very diverse and albeit short and very easy it's a very fun game to play on a rainy evening. It's very moody. 6 is.... something.

AoD seriously needs to bring back reflections, water effects, fix Lara's shadow and upgrade the lighting a bit. So far the cutscenes are looking good because of the stunning new character models, but the gameplay overall looks worse.

I assume they will do the same as 1-3, and release it about 6 months later. Because they know we are suckers and will buy both.

One thing that bothers me is that they have implemented new control schemes but not updated the tutorial prompts when these controls are active. So you will have no idea how to grab ledges unless you look it up. It's a glaring oversight. It's especially egregious in Angel of Darkness.

I would consider myself an expert Raider, been playing since I was 3 I'm 29 now. I can't recommend The Last Revelation enough, I think it's the apex of the Core Design formula, firing on all cylinders.

Looking at these reviews, I'm seeing more a critique of the style of game rather than of the games itself. The gulf of quality between TR4 5 and 6 is greater than maybe any three sequential games in any franchise, and yet all three are treated either equally negatively, or equally neutrally in the reviews.

Personally I'm definitely buying both if we will get a physical release, because I absolutely love what they did with these remasters and for me they are definitely worth 60$ for what amounts of joy they created.

6 is my favorite Tomb Raider. The music, the story, the mood is amazing. Ok controls are not the best, but it's still amazing. 4 is also really good, but quite long. 5 is ok. Not my favorite. So I'd say it's worth it.

TR4 and TR5 are a joy to play as they look drastically different to the originals. The controls continue seamlessly from the last remasters and do feel even better. One example, pressing the look button to unlock a camera is significantly faster and you only have to press once.

4 is difficult in terms of puzzles (which can be quite obscure sometimes) and interconnectedness of some of the levels (backtracking is required), not in terms of combat/enemies or platforming/level design. Also it is really, really generous on items (medipacks and ammo).

Love it so far but they should patch AOD with 120 fps! the 120fps in Part 4 feels soooo smooth.

Yes bugs are fixed and the game is completely playable from start to finish. Though I'm sure, as with all games, you may still find the odd thing here and there.

4 is hard because so much isn't actually explained for the player to know what the hell to do. It's mind bogglingly stupid at times how people are meant to know solutions to certain situations that the game FAILS to tell you. Still, it's big, it's challenging, hardest of the series imo.

The controls for 4-5 are pretty much exactly the same as 1-3, with a few extra moves. Angel of Darkness changes the scheme a bit. It's definitely playable, but certainly the weakest and it feels a bit stiff to me.

Tomb Raider IV is the ONLY game in the franchise that I've never completed before. I played it all the way up to the Cairo section and then I just couldn't be bothered with it. The Remastered version will be the time I finally finish it.

Yes, I think I ended up liking them more than the first remasters honestly, and I loved those. I used the modern controls for all of them, so I didn't have any issues there.

I replay 4 for first time since it was released currently and it's really awesome. I think just for the 4 it's worth it. There are very bigs sets of levels and a lot of new set of movement for Lara, they even made some effort to make secrets a lot more interesting. Sense of adventure and discovery is really here. It's clearly better than most recent game I play.

1-5 are a joy to play as they look drastically different to the originals. AOD is a virtual port with some minor improvements. You can barely tell the difference when switching between old and new versions of AOD.

I was very excited for the remastering of these games. AOD being my favourite. The modern controls are awful. Too clunky to play. I'm annoyed I downloaded it and not bought a physical copy.

4 is good. The way that you can save anytime and anywhere made it more playable for me compared to the past. The upgraded visuals helped a lot too. 5 is whatever. I didn't particularly like this game due to the story. It's just not for me. The visuals are great though.
