Summary

Tormented Souls 2 is a fixed-camera survival horror game that has earned strong praise from genre enthusiasts for being one of the most authentic modern takes on classic RE-style gameplay. The majority of Reddit sentiment is genuinely positive, with players calling it a massive improvement over the first game in nearly every dimension — better graphics, wider environments, more varied enemies, improved voice acting, and a more functional map. The core audience is clearly fans of old-school RE and Silent Hill who appreciate deliberate resource management, tank controls, and environmental puzzle-solving. That said, the game launched with a notable bug problem, including soft locks, input failures, corrupted save triggers, and broken achievements, which tempered the experience for a meaningful portion of players — particularly on consoles. The difficulty on standard mode has also been divisive: veterans who apply survival horror discipline find it manageable, while less experienced players, or those who don't discover key weapons early, can run into frustrating resource dead-ends.

Pros

  • Widely regarded as a major leap over Tormented Souls 1 — better combat, bigger interconnected maps, more enemy variety, and significantly improved voice acting for protagonist Caroline
  • Fixed-camera presentation is described as hauntingly beautiful, with pre-rendered-style angles and optional tank controls that deliver an authentic PS1/PS2 era feel for genre fans
  • Puzzle design praised as inventive and logical, with most players completing them without guides and calling them harder but fairer than classic RE puzzles
  • Assisted mode with autosave offers a fully supported lower-difficulty path for players who want the atmosphere and puzzle experience without punishing resource scarcity
  • Game length around 15-18 hours is substantial for the genre, with interconnected level design that rewards exploration and careful backtracking
  • Multiple difficulty modes including a harder 'Tormented' setting, plus skill-based melee combat and weapon synergies that reward repeat playthroughs

Cons

  • Launched with significant bugs — soft locks, input failures mid-combat, crash-causing menu interactions, and broken trophies/achievements affected a meaningful portion of players, especially on PS5 and Xbox
  • Combat feels janky to many players: enemies are faster and more aggressive than in TS1, corridors are tight, and the lack of conventional firearms (no pistol) means adapting to unconventional weapons like a nail gun and crossbow
  • Resource economy on Standard difficulty has a sharp early-game difficulty spike — particularly around the prison section — if players miss the shotgun behind an optional puzzle, which the game doesn't clearly telegraph
  • Story and dialogue described by several players as cringe-worthy or full of plot holes, especially regarding time travel consistency, though atmosphere and lore files partially compensate
  • Some puzzle solutions remain obtuse enough to require walkthroughs, and the game provides minimal in-game hints for item combinations like the acid vials used as crossbow ammo
  • No New Game+ weapon was available at launch, and achievements remained broken post-release, reducing replay incentive for completionists

The Shotgun Is Required, Not Optional

A significant chunk of players hit a resource wall at the prison section — not because the game is poorly designed, but because they missed the shotgun locked behind a bell tower puzzle. Reddit is full of cautionary tales about this, and the devs never made it obvious. Miss it and you'll be rationing ammo for enemies that were designed to be one-shotted.

Best Fixed-Camera Horror in Years, Bugs Included

Reddit's survival horror community has largely crowned TS2 as the best modern entry in the fixed-camera sub-genre — more authentic than recent Silent Hill entries and closer in feel to REmake than anything else released recently. The caveat is that the launch window was rough, and console players in particular faced soft locks and input glitches the PC crowd mostly avoided.

The Acid Vials Are Crossbow Ammo — Nobody Figured This Out

One of the most upvoted discoveries across multiple threads: the acid test tubes players were hoarding as mystery items are actually the ammo for the crossbow, and the game never tells you. Several players reached boss fights thinking they were out of options, only to realize mid-thread that they were sitting on dozens of usable shots. It's become a rite of passage.

Loved it, my favorite "new gen" survival horror. Not only it's "true" survival horror by every definition, it's super well designed and polished.

It's bigger and better than the first in just about every way. I really enjoyed it.

It is very good, I just finished it today- but I do feel the need to warn people that it needs a little more time in the oven. Camera goes wild vs. The controls sometimes, and there are some pretty absurd graphical glitches that plagued my entire base ps5 playthrough. Despite the expansion of scale and many improvements they made, to me it still feels very, very much like an indie effort.

As long as you don't try and kill everything it's fine. I haven't come close to running out completely (I'm at the 5th area now). I was scarred as a child playing RE2 though (didn't know what I was doing and completely ran out of all ammo in the lab) and have played survival horrors really stingy ever since.

I thought it was very punishing on normal mode. I ended up starting over on assisted because I was really quite exhausted and didn't want to struggle that hard on a first playthrough. I will also say that the game is very buggy. I've encountered several bugs and couldn't finish the game because one of the very last puzzles bugged out and wouldn't work. So, I never beat it, after spending almost 30 dollars on it.

I had none of the problems with ammo and health others have widely reported. But I'm an old school stingy survival horror player, I ran past a lot of enemies and made sure to use melee where possible. The game is pretty buggy at the moment sadly and desperately needs a patch. It's a shame as the game itself is fantastic.

It's crazy in a year where a new Silent Hill game came out that (mechanically speaking) TS2 actually feels like the better and proper Silent Hill-style game with it's camera angles, an actual other world and interior locations etc. that we've been missing for decades.

The only thing I hard disagree with is the saves. My first playthrough was over 40 saves. I never dropped under 10 tapes in inventory after the first few hours. The game is EXTREMELY generous with saves. But yes, the game is very buggy. I stopped after my first run and will wait for patches before I go for achievements. Real shame because the game is so good.

It's a complex and long game. Super nice level design, extremely dark and gritty themes and stories. Just finished it today, and, of course, cried in a corner after getting bad ending... Still, if not for enemy density, it's 10/10. I played on Assisted later on and I had so much fun! Puzzles were amazing and intuitive.

I thought I softlocked myself as well, but then I found out that all the acid test tubes I had been collecting this whole time was the ammo for the crossbow, so it turned out I did have enough ammo to beat the Processing Plant boss and I was able to progress again. Healing items though? I had a shit ton of heals.

I'm 6 hours into my assisted run and it really is an amazing survival horror game. Art work, camera angles, atmosphere, puzzles - all so good. It falters at combat. Jank and very limited resources do not go well. Highly recommend doing assisted the first run.

Having completed the game on normal (killing all enemies) and tormented straight after I wouldn't say there is a resource issue. You just need to make sure you finish off most enemies with melee when they go down and if you do shoot anything don't exit the zone as it just puts enemies back to full health.

I was loving it until the harvester boss. My resources were completely depleted by that point in the level, and that boss was so irritating that I simply couldn't find the motivation to push through bludgeoning him with my pipe and then doing the harpoon nonsense. Unfortunately it ended my playthrough.

I thought the same thing during my first playthrough. So much so that I had to start over in assist mode... But in the end, after finishing it in assist, normal, and tormented modes, it's not that hard. It's a game you have to learn to master. Ultimately, I think that's a good thing.

Also played it and wasn't so hot on it personally. I also wouldn't call this game polished either, even the camera angles at times are just so poorly considered. Not a bad game but not a great one either.

Loved it a lot, if you learn the enemy animations and perfect your dodge you can melee down most bosses without taking a hit. Really like the skill aspect that really makes replays interesting.

How good is this game though!! It's like it's written and created for me. Absolutely love this series. Potential GOTY for mine.

Disappointing sequel simply because the core of the game (gameplay) took a turn for the worse. Enemies are far, far more annoying. They spin around in order to hit you like Dark Souls 2 enemies when in the original you could maneuver around them and make them whiff. This wouldn't be so bad if they also didn't become insanely stagger resistant in the sequel.

Better than the first game in many ways. Combat, environments, graphics, enemies are all big improvements. I did miss the insane puzzle box nature from the mansion in the first game. That game was really cool, seeing how the mansion slowly opens up.

I WOULD call it an objective improvement over the original in every way but something about the first game touched me more narratively and aesthetically. It's really a personal preference things; everything new and different is ultimately for the better imo. Also IT'S BUGGY AS HELL RN. I really hope the devs can clean it up because my PC is always screaming when I start this game for some reason.

The game is not that difficult, I just think a lot of people complaining aren't familiar with old school survival horror games. You MUST conserve your ammo wherever possible, whether that's dodging enemies completely or finishing them off with melee attacks. As long as you play with conservation in mind you'll be fine.

I think the saves are fine. They drown you in tapes, so I never had an issue. I do agree that there are a lot of bugs though. Inputs not working, UI overlay issues, etc. I absolutely love the first game and think this one could be just as good, if not better, but the bugs and glitchiness are really holding it back.

Its an appropriate comparison of TS2 to RE2 with what the developers aimed to do with this sequel. Its bigger, smoother, ambitious, everything the first game did (which was good to great) the sequel does better. I usually play RE2 and REmake 2 annually for Halloween fix and this game will very likely be in the mix now too with how satisfying it is.

I enjoyed the game but the story is so bad, time travel is used inconsistently, and the characters/dialog are so edgelord/cringe. At least they got better voice acting for the second one.

I finished it and yeah there are definitely some major glitches included. Once during the 1st boss fight the camera just went crazy and froze up. Another when in the menu taking the batteries out of the flashlight, as soon as I would eject the tape the game would crash.

I played a little further than you and also restarted to play on assisted. I found the shotgun, but still the resources were too spare for my taste. The gameplay is just too janky to be that unforgiving. Although the combat is not great, I still enjoy the game for its puzzles, story and atmosphere.

It's almost definitely this. Not that I blame OP, happened to me too. Devs almost surely intend you to go get the shotgun ASAP after the hammer which saves a lot of bullets and lets you barely take any hits in the Convent. I actually restarted just like OP because I didn't get the shotgun and ended up running out of healing items and blowing a lot more ammo than I should have.

Two is much better IMO, I played on PC and didn't encounter any bugs, though I've heard others have on consoles. Thank god they got a good voice actress for Caroline, the first one was so bad and really took me out of it during the cutscenes. But the levels, puzzles, and vibes are beautiful and super fun to play.

TS2 is great, but really make sure to conserve your ammo because I ended up soft locked about halfway through the game and had to start over.

I've stopped playing after 6 hours. There's too many soft locks. Very frustrating because there's no autosave and one soft lock can make you lose hours of progress. I'm waiting to pick it up back again once its all ironed out. Fortunately devs are aware and they're working on a fix.

This game blew my mind. The first game is very very different and not even in the same league. Right away you'll notice a more zoomed out camera and actual fixed camera angles with wider spaces, plus so many QOL changes like an actual useful map. It feels very close to RE1-3 and classic SH. The combat is actually good, if not great, and the areas interlink in a simple yet satisfying way.

I just finished this one last week. One of the best survival horror games ever. The exploration is great. The maps are massive, intricate and well connected. I was really surprised by how expansive the game became. The puzzles are great too. Combat is good as well. I liked how strategic some of the weapons and melee options felt.

My favourite game of this entire console generation. Had so much fun playing through it; it was basically everything I wanted from a modern survival horror game. The vibes while running around the town are immaculate.

Loved the first game, immediately played the second and was surprised in many ways. More content, bigger maps, more enemy types, utterly disturbing enemy and boss design, more weapons and better combat, definitely recommend. Still enjoyed the eerie atmosphere and puzzles although I preferred the plot on the first one.

A massive upgrade over Tormented Souls 1. Tormented Souls 2 has fantastic combat balance with a very healthy mix between melee and ranged gameplay. It also has interesting combat interactions with splash damage and multiple missable weapons and weapon upgrades. It is a bit on the easier side on the normal difficulty if you know what you're doing.

Amazing game. Trophies are broken though - be warned. Also, I think guessing how to achieve the good ending was more obvious in the first game. Other than that, solved everything by myself. Probably this game along with SH 1-2 and Signalis are the best in the genre in terms of puzzles. Cannot recommend this game enough.

Major bugs! I bought it on Xbox. The problems are on all consoles and PC. I've lost almost 2hrs of progress 3 times already. I even waited a couple months to see if it would be fixed. It wasn't. I was promptly softlocked within an hour of playing. This game could of been great. But its not. What it is, is a broken game that was clearly released before it was finished.

I don't think it's super difficult, but really frustrating that you can be soft locked due to resources being scarce. I don't mind resource management, but being soft locked ruined my save. Will go back to it and start again at some point as I was enjoying it.

I mostly agree with you OP, but the puzzles in this game are pants-on-head bonkers at times. I had to use a guide for at least half of them. Otherwise, it's an incredible game.
