Summary

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a gacha roguelite from Cygames where you train anime girls based on real Japanese racehorses to win races. The global (English) release launched around mid-2025 — roughly four years after the Japanese version — which became a recurring complaint for players weighing long-term investment. Sentiment across Reddit is broadly positive among players: the training gameplay loop is described as genuinely deep and addictive, the character stories are praised for tackling surprisingly heavy emotional themes, and Cygames' track record of policing explicit fan content keeps the game relatively clean compared to peers. Critics focus on the predatory gacha monetization structure and the franchise's financial ties to real-world Japanese horse racing, which rubs some users the wrong way on ethical grounds. Overall, the game lands well with fans of sports anime, raising sims, and theory-heavy build crafting, but casual players may find the gacha economics harsh.

Pros

  • Deep roguelite training loop with RNG-driven stat builds keeps runs varied — players compare the replayability to Darkest Dungeon and classic raising sims like Princess Maker
  • Character storylines tackle genuinely heavy themes (survivor's guilt, natural disasters, career-ending injuries) with care — Cygames even issued content warnings for story arcs tied to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake
  • F2P progression is manageable for PvE: borrowing SSR support cards from other players reduces the need to pull meta units, and SR cards carry you through main career stages
  • Cygames enforces strict anti-sexualization rules for the Uma characters due to real horse owner partnerships with JRA, making it noticeably tamer than most gacha titles in the genre
  • Strong crossover appeal — the game's faithful adaptation of real racehorse lore has driven fans to research actual horses, visit retired horses, and even donate to horse welfare organizations
  • Available on both mobile and Steam (PC), avoiding the need for a third-party launcher

Cons

  • Global launch arrived roughly four years behind the Japanese version, meaning EN players enter with full knowledge of future banners — undermining any urgency to spend on current content
  • Pity does not carry over between banners, and a full guaranteed pull requires approximately 200 pulls (~$200+ at standard pricing) — widely criticized as one of the worst pity systems in gacha
  • PvP endgame heavily favors whales; F2P players can enjoy the PvE roguelite mode but are largely locked out of competitive leaderboard play
  • The franchise is financially backed by the Japan Racing Association (JRA), and Cygames partners with real horse owners for character designs — users who oppose the horse racing industry on animal welfare grounds find the game's connections to that industry uncomfortable
  • The 4+ year content gap means EN players can hyper-optimize pulls using JP server knowledge, which could suppress revenue and raise shutdown risk long-term
  • A handful of character storylines feature romantic framing between teen characters and the adult trainer, which several users found off-putting even if the game avoids making it explicit

Harder Than It Looks: The Training Loop That Keeps Players Coming Back

Reddit players consistently describe the roguelite career mode as more strategically deep than the anime art style suggests — stat management, RNG events, and race positioning create a build-crafting loop that draws comparisons to classic raising sims and keeps runs from feeling repetitive.

Four Years Late to a Game That Knows It

The global release landing roughly four years after Japan is a structural problem, not just a talking point. EN players already know which banners are worth skipping, which meta supports to hoard resources for, and how the endgame shakes out — removing the financial incentive that keeps gacha games alive.

The Horse Racing Ethics Debate Nobody Expected

A recurring thread in non-gacha subreddits is that Umamusume isn't just adjacent to Japanese horse racing — it's actively funded by the JRA and designed in collaboration with real horse owners. For players already uneasy about the sport's welfare record, that connection is a genuine dealbreaker.

I don't think you know what the word 'Industry Plant' means. That aside, have my upvote. Disagree heavily with you, but you do you man.

It's actually been around since 2021. So people have HEARD about it before the global release. And it's built up a following before it was available globally.

Does this even have staying power anymore? A four year gap is pretty big in terms of spending decisions.

You are a trainer at a school for training Uma's (The girls). The gameplay is akin to Princess maker, or similar trainer games in that vein. You basically play a visual novel esque training sessions attempting to train the girl's stats to finish whatever the end game race is currently involved. It is more or less wholesome.

Admire Vega has one of the darkest backstories/storylines in the series, and the game doesn't particularly hold back with the career story either.

If they didn't do something about those gaps I'm struggling to see how they can make any profit on this, unless you're a meta slave you literally have all the time in the world to plan your pulls for this game lol.

Game is fun if you love theory and build crafting. Cute anime girls are icing on the cake. With that said there are probably better paid video game options for people who are mostly fans of the former. Gachas are inherently predatory, this one is no different. Especially since 'pity' doesn't carry over between banners. I enjoy the game a lot, but it's definitely not for everyone.

I love the game. It's about horse girls, who are based on real life race horses and you train them to win races. I really enjoy the connection to real life horses and it carries over a lot of the lore and designs and you can tell it was made with passion. Cygames actually has a rule against sexualization of the Umamusume.

I'm not playing it because I play games for actual horses, not for vaguely horse-themed anime girls. I get and appreciate why the audiences have some overlap though, and I think it's cute that some people are getting interested in the real life racehorses because of the game. I just really wish we got actual horse games with anywhere near comparable reach and production value.

I still think it's kinda crazy they went *there* as her defining character trait. It definitely makes for a good story, but somebody really had to go, 'So this horse had a twin, and only one lived? What if we made her motivation for racing be that her sister never got to...'

Unfortunately the subreddit for it seems to have lots of gooner fanart/comments. But yeah the game itself is pretty wholesome. Some of them are super cute, like rice shower and how she calls the trainer her big sister.

I'm not sure it should be so greatly celebrated that this predatory gambling game is so successful, my faith in humanity has taken a dive knowing that this is what people will accept just because it's got cute anime girls in it... These games are scummy, addictive, and extremely predatory.

UmaMusume is fairly wholesome, as far as this type of game goes. The premise is race horses from our world get reincarnated as horse girls in their world. They do no gambling/betting on the races, and they feel much more like track races than Horse Races.

I was skeptical at first, then watched a video on how the fan base donated all this food and money to some of the retired horses. Then another article about people visiting the retired horses. Then the story about Haru Urara. I decided to check the game out. I will say it's a decent game in general and I am not a big fan of gacha type games.

This part of the story was actually shocking to me. I completely did not expect it. The event is literally called 'The day the world lost all colour'. I didn't think Cygames would show this side of things but it definitely was interesting.

Cannot wait for the typical JP Gacha cycle. 1. Release 4 years behind JP 2. Many people already lose interest and the people who's a fan already played on JP server. 3. Make little profit 4. JP devs blame it on Global audience don't get their game appeal. 5. Delay any other new potential Gacha that might be big if being released at the same time globally.

Despite the fact that the girls are based on horses, it's not really actually a horse game. I tried playing it for like twenty minutes and I got deeply bored of it. It's just another anime gacha, albeit one with good production values.

I like that they are based on real race horses and base their stories and personalities on them. I haven't played the game because I avoid gachas but I really enjoy watching some streamers play.

People will complain about gacha and I totally understand. But you can get a solid amount of gameplay totally f2p, you won't be crushing PVP or anything, but playing the main mode (a roguelite) is pretty dang fun. Also if you actually read the stories, they're basically just sports anime stories. I loved King Halo and Haru Urara's stories. Just watch out for Super Creek.

This game really surprised me in the best way possible. For being a silly game about Japanese race horses reincarnating as anime girls, both the game and the show have so much depth. Even if I stop playing the game altogether, I don't think my interest for the franchise will fade down.

I play a lot of gachas. Cygames tend to make not very sexual/fanservicy ones (granblue, dragalia lost, etc). There's a couple horsegirls that clearly want to date you, but you generally don't indulge them all that seriously (seriously dating the girls is against school policy, so dates are generally chaste and friendly.)

Being 4 years behind the Japanese version is gonna be rough. Are we gonna wait years for QOL updates or are they gonna give it to us at the start? Plus we're gonna have people be very efficient with their gacha currency. No need to spend money on this banner since she's gonna be useless in a few months. They really dropped the ball in my opinion. They should have released this a couple of years ago.

The game is primarily about training horse girls in a roguelike-esque story mode. During the story there's goals you need to hit, like top 5 or 3 in a certain race. Once the story is finished you can keep the final build, put them on your team and race them against other players teams. During races, you just watch your character race the others. It's very rng heavy, and having overall better stats doesn't guarantee you'll win.

Good. It's actually a good game with a lot of content. Engaging races, interesting stories (with some RL things in there). Yep its a gacha, and if you want to be competitive or win everything - you probably need money. But for casual playthrough - nah, you're gonna be okay.

Its so predatory it goes in the opposite way. $20 for a single 10 pull, where you need 20x10 pull to have a guarantee via a pity on a card you want is insane. if 5x10 pull is $10-15 i will contemplate hard when pulling for meta characters.

I've played it for years on the Japanese server. It's a cute and fun game but very different from most games out there.

I remember a few years ago we were all rightfully outraged by blatant pay to win mechanics, but I suppose when the characters are anime girls and the game is from Asia it's suddenly completely okay. Shitty gacha garbage.

I uninstalled after doing 200 pulls on a banner and getting 0 of the two characters featured on it. Gacha in this is pretty horrible. But I have been spoiled by a different game.

It's not really outwardly sexual but it's always given me weird harem vibes. It has very strong power imbalance, owner and pet energy that's put me off.

I play it a lot and it is very wholesome, the support events between the girls are in no way fanservice and it just well cute. I went into this game to make fun of it because it does seem like gooner material but it's just good vibes all around.

Because of that, I know my racing lingo, I know some of the famous horses, and I've played lots of racing games from Japan since my childhood. I watched the anime when it first launched and I wanted to play the game years ago, but my Japanese wasn't good and it was region locked.

Even if you have no interest in either gacha, horse racing or sports anime, this might still be worth checking out for the OST alone. It goes unreasonably hard. The story is really good, too.

In my opinion as someone who's played through a couple storylines, the sexualization mostly comes through in the designs rather than the characters themselves. Their stories all paint pictures of extremely three dimensional characters that exist outside the bounds of their sexualization. Essentially, if you can tolerate mainstream anime, you can tolerate this game.

It's great!! It's a management roguelite where you help your horsegirl achieve their dreams. They do some fan service since the target demographic is still otakus and weebs but they supposedly crack down on H art since they need to be in good standings with the JRA. Most impressive thing is how it got people into actual horse racing because of how faithful to the source material it is.

You can just play F2P and save 200 pulls or more and only pull on anniversary or half anniversary for max value. The gacha is only relevant for end game PVP. But funny horse game is fun.
