Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT is a well-regarded 1080p GPU that Reddit users consistently describe as capable, quiet, and underrated for its performance tier. Sentiment skews positive among actual owners, with most praising its raw frame output and thermal efficiency once drivers matured past the rocky launch period. The card targets budget-conscious 1080p gamers who prioritize frames over features, though its 6GB VRAM ceiling and lack of ray tracing or NVENC have become more relevant concerns over time. The chaotic launch — where AMD pushed a last-minute BIOS update boosting memory clocks from 12Gbps to 14Gbps days before release — left some early buyers with underperforming cards, creating confusion that colored early reviews. Those who got the updated BIOS or flashed it themselves found the card competitive with the RTX 2060 at a lower price.

Pros

  • Solid 1080p performance with users regularly hitting 100+ FPS in AAA titles at high/ultra settings, and 144+ FPS in esports titles like Apex Legends, CSGO, and League of Legends
  • Thermal efficiency stands out — multiple owners report staying under 70°C under load with near-silent operation, especially on the Sapphire Pulse and Red Devil models mounted on 5700 XT-class heatsinks
  • BIOS modding headroom is substantial: users running the card at 2050 MHz core / 1820 MHz memory clock report performance within 10% of the RX 5700 XT, essentially closing the generational gap for free
  • Strong mining efficiency for Ethereum made it a dual-purpose card for many owners, with some reporting over $800 recovered through mining during peak periods
  • Capable of light 1440p gaming — users on 1440p/170Hz monitors report playable frame rates across most titles, and even occasional 4K gaming in well-optimized older titles like GTA V and Tomb Raider

Cons

  • 6GB VRAM is a genuine bottleneck in modern titles — users report VRAM maxing out in games like Alan Wake 2, RE4 Remake causing stutters, and map texture bugs in Horizon Zero Dawn at 1440p that disappear at 1080p
  • No ray tracing hardware and no DLSS support puts it behind Nvidia's RTX 2060 in feature set, with the 2060's NVENC encoder frequently cited as worth the small price premium for streamers
  • Launch was a mess: AMD pushed a BIOS update days before release boosting memory clocks, meaning many first-wave cards shipped with 12Gbps VRAM instead of 14Gbps, requiring manual flashing to reach advertised performance
  • Driver stability history creates hesitation — while owners report stability is solid now, early RDNA1 driver issues were real enough that multiple users switched to Nvidia during that window, and the reputation has lingered
  • The 192-bit memory bus (vs 5700's 256-bit) causes steeper performance scaling drops at higher resolutions in memory-bandwidth-sensitive titles like Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Owners Call It the Card That Grew Into Itself

Most 5600 XT owners on Reddit didn't plan to buy it — they grabbed it during shortages or found it on sale. But the recurring story is the same: skeptical at purchase, genuinely impressed after months of daily use. The gap between its reputation and its real-world performance is one of the widest on Reddit.

The $280 Card That Needed a BIOS to Become What AMD Promised

AMD's last-minute VRAM clock boost turned a mediocre launch card into a legit RTX 2060 competitor — but only for buyers who got the updated BIOS or knew to flash it themselves. Redditors were blunt: without the update, the card was relatively poor value. With it, the math changed completely.

Modders Doubled Its VRAM. Here's What Happened.

A hardware mod team replaced the 5600 XT's six 1GB GDDR6 chips with 2GB chips, creating the only 12GB 5600 XT in existence. The community went wild — not just for the novelty, but because RE4 Remake benchmarks jumped from 25 FPS to 65+ FPS, proving the 6GB VRAM ceiling was a real, measurable performance wall.

I can confirm we, at Sapphire, have worked hard with the cards for NA to ensure all of the cards sold on day one have the new BIOS. IF a card slipped through the cracks and has an old BIOS then let me know and I will get you fixed up.

Holy shit, from 25 fps to 65+ is really impressive gains! Really wish these cards didn't rely on onboard memory so much and we had other options. Games just need a ton of GPU memory these days and these companies like Nvidia just won't give it without a premium price attached.

I love my 5600 XT!! Got it for $300 in March 2020 and it's been an awesome card for 1080p 240fps Apex/League/CSGO while running most AAA comfortably at 144fps. Not to mention it's mined over $800 USD worth of Ethereum which is great.

TLDR: Slightly better than 2060 FE post bios change, pre bios change slightly weaker. If artificial limitations (even on post change) is removed, can be pushed even further.

The best 5600XT is a reference 5700 on a super sale.

AMD pulls 11.3% out of their azz because 2060 price drop happened and people don't realize that there will be huge disparity between 5600XT models that either don't have the BIOS for higher TDP and clocks or don't have 14gbps rated memory. The perf difference between 5600XT original and 5600XT boosted is like 11%, that's what makes it compete with the 2060. Without it the GPU is relatively trash at the price.

While the same performance for a lower price is great to have, software issues have been hitting AMD GPUs pretty hard lately. It's also difficult to ignore the various features that Nvidia exclusively has. Having been hit with said driver issues, it's difficult for me to recommend AMD anymore, even with slightly better price/perf.

5600XT is a great card that performs similarly to the RTX2060 for $30-$50 cheaper generally. You do lose Nvenc, RTX, and DLSS though.

Pretty good in terms of price/perf. Equivalent to a Vega 64 and RTX 2060 at a better price. Not too far off from a 5700 or 2060 Super in some titles. They've marketed this card for 1080P gaming but it looks like it will be good for 1440P if you are on a budget.

Very surprised with the performance. AIB Sapphire is better than a 2060 and cheaper. I am officially closing the book on any mid range concerns I had for AMD.

Have used my 5700XT for around 1500 hours since I got it, always updated to the newest drivers when they got available. Not a single issue with it so far. Yes, people have issues with their cards, but it's a vocal minority.

It's just the equivalent of a Radeon RX 5700 (no-XT) with 6GB of GDDR6 instead of 8GB, so it's completely normal that it remains a good graphics card for 1080p even years later.

Drivers are really not an issue anymore. Get the 1660ti if you'll use the turing encoder for encoding videos, otherwise 5600xt will be faster.

This card is such a beast. Stock is good but it can be better. Super happy with the mods I have with mine. BIOS mod for 2050 mhz core clock & 1820 mhz memory clock plus my old ID Cooling Frostflow 120VGA on it makes it perform like a 5700 while being dead silent w/ temps at 67C core & 88C junction.

My 5600XT could run Horizon Zero Dawn at 1440p pretty well on the original preset but the map was almost always blurry/bugged with my VRAM maxed out, dropping it to 1080p fixed the map. At least I think it was a VRAM issue. No such issue with my 6950XT.

At 2050/1820 it is only 10% slower than the 5700xt.

Yes, love the card, could not have been a better upgrade from the RX580. Went from 1080p on high settings not maxing out my 75hz monitor to a very comfortable high setting at 1440p and about 85-100hz on stuff like Borderlands 3. Plus I can't hear it over my case fans.

It's a good GPU, but don't buy it over an RTX 2060 unless the price difference is too big. The RTX 2060 has a ton more features and more stable drivers.

Stock yes, it's because 5600XT is limited to 1800MHz through vbios. However, there are bios available for 5600XT to unlock it to clock just as high as 5700. Then there is no difference — I flashed my MSI 5600XT with it and it works.

The sapphire Pulse is the best 5600 xt you can buy, and the 5600xt is a great buy anyways. Yes you lose ray tracing, but ray tracing will be much much more powerful in the next generation of graphics cards. Ray tracing now loses so much performance it is not worth it this generation. 5600xt is better value for frame rates right now.

I'm using mine in 1440p. Every game I throw at it plays at 60fps+. Best 'budget' card out there right now.

I own and daily an Asus 5600xt oc edition. It runs beautifully, no driver issues, never exceeds 60°c under full load, and plays whatever game I want in no less than 60 fps. It's a very capable card.

Got A Sapphire RX 5600 XT BE which I got pretty cheap in November and coming from an RX 590 with the intent of gaming at 1080p at high refresh rates and the card has been spectacular, not a single driver issue, not a problem, everything runs smoothly, very happy with my purchase.

Very luckily, I managed to get the Red Devil 5600XT in the week before the 6000 series cards were released for only £280 and I've been absolutely blown away by it. I'd been using an R9 380X with a 1080p60 monitor and never knew how much I was missing out on, but since I got this 5600XT and a 1440p170 monitor, holy hell now I understand the fuss.

I will be building my pc in the next coming months and I will be pairing my sapphire pulse 5600xt with the amd ryzen 5 3600 and I've heard that most of the driver problems have been fixed and it's a very good gpu.

It is fine for 1080p 60fps and lighter games at 1440p 60fps or 1080p 144fps. Just look for a good model with a reliable cooler.

I purchased a 5600 XT thicc pro a few months back when they were on sale for a pretty good price. I'll say the card works fine, though it's the weakest of the 5600 xt's apparently. I've been using it to run a 1440p monitor at 120hz. You'll see varying levels of performance in a number of games. Like Red Dead Redemption 2 I think I'm getting around 60-70fps after following a guide to tweak the in game settings.

My only gripe against buying one are its 6GB VRAM which seems a downgrade coming from a 580 8GB. But as I play in 1080p I'm not really sure if I would really appreciate 'losing' those 2 GB vs the increased performance.

I just got it a couple weeks ago and have been fairly happy. As others have said it's a beast for 1080p. I'm pulling almost 60 frames in Flight Simulator on high settings. Only issue I've had was the factory overclock was a tad unstable so had to tune it down slightly.

I got a sapphire pulse 5600xt at the start of 2020 and honestly the card is an absolute beast. I'm super impressed by what this bad boy can do. The train to value town has no brakes baby.

I managed to snag one a few months ago for $300. I bought a 1080p monitor cause that's what was on my budget, but it still feels amazing to load into a game for the first time, have the settings be automatically set to high or ultra, and be able to hit 100+ FPS at minimum with my PC hitting 144 in most.

It's still pretty decent in the gaming world. I bought a pc with that graphics card recently and it runs just fine on pretty high graphics. However for some more laggy games like Fortnite you might wanna get a different graphics card. Pretty good for a budget, can do most things a better pc can do.

For heavy 1080p, heavy/med 1440p it's a pretty damn good card. I replaced my 1070 ti with it. Honestly like it a lot more.

I am currently using a 5600xt for 1080p and while I am definitely wanting to upgrade to better suit my new cpu I got last year, it has doubtlessly held up very well and is capable of playing most games of the last 5+ years. Alan Wake 2 was the first real struggle I had as of late, but depending on your tastes, it's definitely a viable card to have.

I own an XFX rx 5600xt and it runs beautifully. I got it for $279 USD and it's amazing. I run everything at 1080p on high or ultra and get between well above 60fps. The most demanding title I play is Assassin's creed odyssey, and on that with ultra settings, I get 60 to 70fps. Every other game is well above 100.

I had the same problem for the last couple of months — gtx1660S vs 5600XT. Read about driver issues of Navi gpus from start of the year, and although I wanted to go full AMD, I hesitated a lot. Finally I decided to pull the trigger and bought myself sapphire pulse 5600 XT BE. It is a fantastic card, runs well, runs cold. Drivers are stable, no problems so far. I also have a Dell G5 laptop with a 2060 and I will say that 5600xt performs much better.

I have had a sapphire pulse 5600xt for 3 months, drivers crash constantly, I can't even use the newest drivers because then I get artifacts and black screen issues. Two weeks ago one fan started spinning multiple times faster for no reason. Currently in the RMA process. Maybe I just got an unlucky unit but my experience with this card has been terrible.

Drivers were never a problem to begin with. It just got a lot of traction because it became a meme, not because it was actually true. Drivers were no worse than Nvidia; in fact I would argue Turing drivers were arguably worse, not to mention cards bricking by the thousands.
