Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is a 2019 RDNA1 card that has aged remarkably well for its price on the used market, consistently praised for 1080p and 1440p60 gaming. Reddit sentiment is largely positive among budget-conscious buyers who picked it up used for $100–$150, with the card earning a reputation as a dependable 1440p workhorse that punches above its used price tag. However, the community is clear-eyed about its ceiling: 8GB VRAM is increasingly a pain point in newer titles, it lacks hardware ray tracing and mesh shader support, and a handful of games now either require or default-enable RT in ways the 5700 XT simply cannot handle. Early driver chaos at launch is mostly historical now, though some users still encounter occasional quirks. The general verdict is "buy it cheap, enjoy it, don't overpay."

Pros

  • Strong 1440p60 performance in most non-RT titles — users report steady 60–80fps at 1440p in demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy with FSR2 quality, and Horizon Forbidden West on medium-high settings
  • Excellent 1080p value on the used market — picked up for $100–$150, it delivers performance comparable to an RTX 3060 at a fraction of the cost
  • FSR2 and FSR3 Frame Gen compatibility extends the card's life significantly — titles that would otherwise struggle run well at Ultra with upscaling enabled
  • Overclocking headroom on third-party cooler models (Sapphire Nitro, ROG Strix, MSI Gaming X) — users report stable 2100–2300MHz clocks with undervolting, with one user running the same rig for 6 years at 1440p 100–140fps
  • Power efficiency relative to its performance tier — lower TDP than competing Nvidia cards of the era makes cooling and PSU requirements more forgiving
  • BIOS flash trick allows the non-XT 5700 to perform within 5% of the XT with a simple mod, giving budget builders extra flexibility

Cons

  • 8GB VRAM is the card's real Achilles heel going forward — users explicitly say their next upgrade will be forced by VRAM limits, not frame rate, as modern AAA titles increasingly exceed 8GB at higher settings
  • No hardware ray tracing or mesh shader support — Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Alan Wake 2 have non-optional RT that reduces the 5700 XT to unplayable frame rates at 1440p; Indiana Jones requires RT entirely
  • FSR4 support is confirmed RDNA4-only, and XeSS 2 performs notably worse on RDNA1 vs RDNA2 hardware, narrowing future upscaling options
  • Reference blower cooler was notorious at launch — loud, hot, and widely panned; only third-party AIB models (Sapphire Nitro, ROG Strix) are recommended for used purchases
  • Driver quirks still surface for some users — settings resets, refresh rate detection failures after display reconnects, and emulator performance issues reported, though most are traceable to Windows Fast Startup or cable quality rather than the GPU itself
  • Better used-market alternatives exist at similar prices — RX 6600 XT, RX 6700 XT, and Intel Arc B580 all offer more VRAM, mesh shader support, and longer driver longevity for $150–$250

Six Years In, Owners Still Won't Sell It

Multiple long-term owners on Reddit describe turning down upgrade offers and trade deals, citing that the 5700 XT simply keeps delivering at 1440p with FSR. One user ran the same R5 3600 + 5700 XT combo for six years at 1440p with consistent high framerates — still going strong.

The $140 Card That Beats a $300 GPU — If You Dodge RT

On the used market around $100–$150, the 5700 XT trades blows with cards that cost twice as much at launch. The catch is that its value evaporates the moment a game forces ray tracing, where it either crashes out or drops to unplayable framerates — a scenario becoming more common in recent AAA releases.

The VRAM Wall Is Coming, and Owners Know It

Community consensus isn't that the 5700 XT is too slow — it's that 8GB VRAM is the clock ticking. Reddit threads are full of owners saying their upgrade trigger won't be FPS but the moment a game refuses to load textures. That day is getting closer with every new AAA title.

Tldr: good performance per dollar and performance per watt; the reference cooler is shit.

Gamers Nexus called it the worst stock cooler they have ever seen. Thermals and acoustics are dreadful. Even with all of that, they still called it a decent card, but recommended waiting for AiB cards.

5700 XT was really underrated I reckon. Sure it lacks RT but barely any games used it when it launched and Turing wasn't exactly a powerhouse at it like Ampere is. It also offered 2070S performance and could even match 2080 in some titles that were optimised for AMD, while only costing $350 USD if you waited for a deal. Great mid-high end card at the time and it's still decent today.

5700 XT is mostly a 1080p120 or 1440p60 for current-gen games. Expected performance really. It's also funny how it's just about twice of a RX 580, to the frame almost.

Funny how the tides turned. People were disappointed with the 5700s when they were announced but hyped for Zen 2. Now with reviews out there's some disappointment regarding Ryzen's clocks (despite great performance) but a nice surprise with the GPUs.

The software seems to consistently reset my settings every time I shut down my computer — 100% sounds like you have Windows Fast Startup enabled. Your machine isn't shutting down, but hibernating and its acting like the display driver is crashing when it 'starts', thus resets your settings.

In what world is it a weak GPU, talking like a $450GPU from 2019 is some budget antiquity.

It really depends on the games you want to play. The fact of the matter is, graphics doesn't equate to gameplay or fun, and I've found myself vastly enjoying games with simple graphics that can run on a potato vs. resources-chugging titles like Cyberpunk. Having said that I do want to have the option to play Cyberpunk, hence the expensive GPU that I hardly ever use.

From what I've gathered the XT is way better. More overclocking headroom.

An RX 6650XT would be better. Longer driver support and more features.

My sister runs a 5700xt since 2019, she just started playing hogwarts legacy at 3440x1440. With fsr2 at quality, it gets between 60-80fps while still looking good. Fsr is a godsend for those cards, no reason to replace it, since new 400€ cards don't have that much more performance.

7700XT is about 75% faster than 5700XT.

The long and short of it is back then we were fighting the crypto mining douchebags for inventory and now we are fighting AI douchebags. Either way, prices are still jacked up and they're never seemingly coming back down. The real question isn't what's the best value, it's how can I stop myself from being screwed in the future.

I've close to 80+ 5700/5700xt cards out in the wild of which none of them have issues. The only display related errors or crashes were caused by PSU and physical memory problems.

It's still decent for 1080p games. Definitely an upgrade from an rx 580! Undervolt that shit, turn up the power limit, overclock the memory, and it'll give you a nice little boost as well.

Alan Wake 2 is the only game that made me feel like it might be time for an upgrade.

Definitely worth it, I upgraded from a 570 to a 5700xt when it came out and it was a huge performance boost. The only thing I'd be cautious about is which cooler it has, if it's the reference model I'd avoid it since those ran super hot, I had one and replaced it with a 3rd party cooler.

Its still a decent card. Should keep you covered until you find a better gpu in a future.

You want 16G VRAM at least for near-future AAA titles. Get the 7800XT, offers excellent performance for the price. If you are on budget get RX 6800 or RX 6800 XT.

Only problem with the 5700xt is the 8gb vram. The card is fine, but running into vram limits more and more as time goes on. I mean you can just dial back settings, so you can still play games. But, when i upgrade it wont be because fps was too low, it will be because the vram is too low.

I've been on a 5700xt since it launched and I've been coming to the same conclusion. It's good enough for what games I play at 1440p and everything else is FAR too expensive for too small a performance boost. I had even bought a 4070 on sale and it just...wasn't faster enough to warrant the price. I returned it a few days later.

Man I still rock a 5700XT and will until I can't. It's a helluva' card and if you can even get one nowadays for dirt cheap it won't disappoint you.

My R5 3600 x 5700XT setup from 2019 still plays everything high 1440 100-140fps no problem. Will play ultra if you're willing to drop to 60-70fps. I do keep everything overclocked and my cpu is liquid cooled though. Been my daily for 6 years and never skipped a beat.

The card is pretty good still and can play all those games you mentioned....but $200 used seems pretty high. I can find used 6700 XT for that price, but this of course depends on availability on your region.

Hell yes. I've got the gigabyte 5700 xt 8gb OC paired with a ryzen 5 3600 running at 1400p/165mhz and it's so damn smooth running just about everything I play at max with 60+ fps. With the latest bios/drivers from AMD, resizable BAR is enabled, too!

It's great for 1080p. Also, pro tip: you can flash the VBIOS of the 5700 XT to the non-XT and get the same performance as the XT for free.

Specially after AMD patched the early driver problems. My 5700XT was quite unstable in the first 3 months, but after some driver and bios updates and a minor undervolt it now runs rock stable for 1.5 years.

Yeap, people love to shit on it but for 1080/1440p gaming its an amazing beast. Especially when you can clock it as high as 2.25/2.3GHz with MPT like I do.

Still running a 5700 XT myself, I just see no good upgrade path for a similar price. Perhaps RDNA4 next year will bring that, but I'm not too hopeful.

The way I resolved my 5700xt driver issues was to 'upgrade' to a 3060. The drop in temps from a 100C jet turbine to 70C in silence was a nice cherry on top of actually functional software.

My problems gone away since I started installing just the drivers only and rely on Afterburner for undervolting, fan control, etc.

Good card if you can land one for $100. Any more than that I'd just jump on an Intel B580 for $250 if you are lucky enough to ever find one in stock. It's far more future proof.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my reference 5700XT. I'm only 1080p, but it plays MW and CP2077 smooth as butter. In a few years when cards aren't unobtainium any longer, I might look into upgrading. For the foreseeable future, I think I did alright.

Been rocking the Sapphire Nitro 5700XT since its release and it's a great card for 1440p gaming. As you said every now and then it has some drops but still fantastic card!!

Glad i bought one shortly after release. Been happy with it since day one; good performance and have had no problems with the card. But, I'm especially glad i have no reason to buy a gpu in the current market.

I've been very impressed with mine. I've got an Odyssey G9 and have been amazed that I can run Red Dead II at 5120x1440 on medium to high settings and get 45-60 fps most of the time.

Don't. Not only they're old, they were one of the most popular GPUs for mining. There's a high chance the BIOS was tempered with for better mining efficiency, too. I'd just hold on and gather more money for a new RX 6600 for like $70 more.

I used to own a couple rx 5700 xt's when they were released, if I am right they are on par with a 1080ti except the vram is not 11gb but 8gb, they were exceptionally good in my opinion.

Doesn't support mesh shaders. Can't play Indiana Jones because that requires ray tracing. Future games will be more like this. Soon driver updates could be abandoned. It likely won't even run FSR4 properly.
