Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 6600 has carved out a strong reputation as the go-to budget GPU for 1080p gaming, widely regarded by Reddit as the spiritual successor to the beloved RX 580. Community sentiment is overwhelmingly positive among users who actually own and game with the card — most report stable 60-100+ fps at high or ultra settings in demanding titles, with impressively low power draw around 120-125W. The card earns its praise primarily from people upgrading from older hardware like the GTX 1060, RX 480, or GTX 1650, for whom it represents a massive generational leap. The main debate on Reddit isn't whether the card performs well, but whether the 8GB VRAM ceiling and the existence of better-value alternatives at slightly higher price points make it a smart long-term purchase.

Pros

  • Delivers solid 1080p performance, with users consistently hitting 60-100+ fps at high or ultra settings in games like Diablo IV, Fortnite, Witcher 3, and Call of Duty — well above the 60fps target most budget buyers are aiming for
  • Exceptionally power-efficient at around 120-125W TDP, with users reporting the ability to undervolt it down to ~60W while retaining roughly 87% of stock performance — translating to near-silent operation and cool temps in the low-to-mid 50s Celsius under load
  • Represents a massive upgrade for users coming from GTX 1060/1650 or RX 480/580 hardware, with performance improvements of 70-80% or more in many titles, enough to feel like a completely different PC
  • Compact form factor and low power requirements make it ideal for small-form-factor builds, HTPCs, and systems with modest PSUs — a genuine advantage over beefier alternatives
  • AMD's Smart Access Memory (SAM) support provides a meaningful additional performance boost when paired with compatible Ryzen CPUs and AM4/AM5 boards, squeezing extra frames for free
  • Consistently praised as one of the quietest cards in its class — several users specifically called out fan noise as a non-issue even under sustained gaming loads

Cons

  • The 8GB VRAM limit is the most frequently cited long-term concern — users report hitting memory limits in titles like Forza Horizon 5 at ultra settings, forcing texture downgrades before the GPU core itself is maxed out, raising questions about how well it will age into the next few years
  • Uses only PCIe x8 lanes rather than the standard x16, which can create a bandwidth bottleneck on PCIe 3.0 systems — particularly relevant for older platform builds where buyers are most likely to be shopping at this price point
  • No competitive ray tracing — while a few users noted this isn't why anyone buys a $200 card, it does mean the card is essentially locked out of RT-heavy titles or modes that are increasingly common in modern AAA releases
  • For around $50-80 more, the RX 6700 XT offers 12GB VRAM, 35%+ more 1080p performance, and genuine 1440p capability — making the 6600 feel like a compromise for anyone who might want to upgrade their monitor in the next 2-3 years
  • AMD Adrenalin software draws consistent criticism — some users report utilization issues, display-port wake bugs, and a generally clunkier driver experience compared to Nvidia's GeForce Experience
  • Production has reportedly ended, meaning new unit availability is shrinking and prices may creep upward — buying used is becoming the more realistic path, which introduces the usual secondhand risk

The 8GB Wall: When Does the RX 6600 Start Saying No?

Reddit owners report hitting VRAM limits in ultra-settings scenarios before the GPU core itself maxes out — a frustrating ceiling for a card that otherwise has processing headroom to spare. For 1080p medium-high, it's a non-issue. For future-proofing at ultra, it's a real conversation.

The RX 580's True Heir Has Finally Arrived

Reddit keeps calling the RX 6600 the spiritual successor to the legendary RX 580 — and the comparison holds up. Same budget-king positioning, same community love, same debate about whether it's worth it at launch versus waiting for the price to drop. For RX 580 owners, the upgrade math is compelling.

125 Watts and Silent: The RX 6600's Sleeper Superpower

While most GPU discussions focus on raw frames, RX 6600 owners keep coming back to one unexpected highlight: it barely makes a sound. With undervolting, users are hitting near-silent operation at under 65W with minimal performance loss — a rare trait at any price point, let alone the budget tier.

The Rx6600 is Rx580's true spiritual successor. Truly the best budget card you can buy in the current market, where good budget cards are in extinction.

I just did something similar. Went from a RX 480 to a 6600XT that I bought off of Marketplace. Gave the 480 to my daughter to replace a potato she had in her PC.

6600 has been the goat of this generation. 3060ti was scalped to hell and back and is still hovering around 500. 3050 sits at 320 whilst being 20%-30% slower. It's been the most available and closest to its MSRP better than any of the other options, has no silly drawbacks, amazingly efficient. This is coming from someone who's had a 3050, 3070, 3080, 6600, 6600XT.

An rx6600 is something like 80% stronger at 1080p. If you are in the US the rx6600xt, rx6650xt, and rx6700 should all be found under $300. Currently the rtx3060 12gb and rx7600 also come in under $300.

If the RX 6600 is very close to 200$ or even below it's a good buy, there's also the RX 6600/6650 XT that's 15%+ faster that goes for 250$ and if you're lucky you can find the RX 6700 XT for 300$ and it's 35%+ faster than the RX 6600 and on par with a RTX 3070.

a750 tdp is around 225w, rx6600 is around 125W. Huge difference. Most people should just buy rx6600 and be done with it, plus there's so many upscalers and frame-gens these days.

I think the 6600 for 1080p is a great card even for AAA games at decent fps.

using 6600 now, served me well. Will only upgrade when I can get double performance for good price ($3-400 USD)

Budget cards? They cost twice as much of what they are worth these days.

I was looking into this card last night and saw people were able to get this card down to 50w on the core while losing only about 15% performance from stock. Absolute craziness in terms of efficiency.

I did a budget build with this and work perfect for my gaming style; 1080 at stable 75 fps in high/ultra in almost every game. More than enough.

I have a 6600 xt and it is pretty freaking awesome for a budget build. I play in 1080, and I get well over 60 fps with ultra settings. With extremely demanding games, may have to put a couple on high, to stay over 60 fps. Altogether, a damn good card for the price.

I have the 6600xt paired with a 5600 i think and i play most games at 1440p with no problems. This includes games like WoW (50-80fps), Pubg(80-100fps), PoE2(40-60fps) with medium settings. I probably could have more fps if i played them at 1080p or reduce the graphic settings even more. But i'm fine with how it is.

I don't really play triple A games but I did see good performance increase with FPS by around 80%. The XFX Rx580 had some temperature issue even after changing thermal paste/opening side panel, going up to high 80's or 90 degrees in the worst case, making my pc sound like jet engine all day. On the other hand, Rx6600 actually kept temperature at 40~50 degrees with highest being 55 at default fan setting; now I can finally use my pc in peace.

Performs better than 2060 except for ray tracing. Rx6600 will consume less power and run cooler

If it had more than 8GB ram I would have bought the RX 6600. As is I've been waiting for a Sub 125W card with more than 8GB ram

Rx6600 is a great upgrade for 1080p and even usable for 1440p if you upgrade in the future. RX6700xt is popular right now, but I'd say unnecessary for 1080p for those on a budget.

I keep game profiles for the games that I want to leave uncapped but don't want to pump power into and that is true! 2500 > 2150 core undervolted keeps the card at <65w, small performance loss but the fans and temps barely change vs idle, it's crazy efficient.

Had the 480 8gb, then 6600 and now 6900xt. Still miss the 6600. Beast of a card for the price and really quiet, 65° at max load with OC and 120w power draw. Beast of a card. Enjoy!

I just bought one for $250 Canadian, $200 US about and that makes it a fantastic deal!! It runs very, very quiet perfect for my media system. I get over 60fps in max settings in Witcher 3. The best 1080 GPU you can get.

It's a great card, but it is handicapped by the memory. The one in my briefcase PC is capable of playing Forza horizon 5 at ultra settings at over 100fps but it randomly runs out of memory so I had to turn it down, now it's only hitting around 75% utilization. If it had 10-12gb it would be an incredible value. It's still great but it runs out of memory before running out of processing power.

ur mobo & cpu are both pcie3, & the 6600 is only an 8 lane gpu card. 8GB/s of pcie bandwidth is cutting it fine on modern games. the 6700 gpuS are 16 lane.

Imho, it's an acceptable card, with still good performance, it allows you to play decently (1080p). The problem is the price of the new one which perhaps doesn't make it so convenient, it's likely that in that price range you indicated there are better video cards.

I nabbed this GPU for my son on prime day for $260 and it was a steal. SAM enabled as well and he's getting 200fps on Fortnite at 1080p on epic settings (shadows disabled). He's got a B450m Pro4 board and an R5 3600 with 16 gigs of 3000mhz RAM...plenty for a highschool freshman.

I bought my RX6600 2 years ago for 280 bucks, now it's 200. It's a good card, have no issues with it. But it's not high end or even mid range. I'll use this one until I have a game that looks like shit on the RX6600. But I have yet to find something that doesn't look good. Especially considering how cheap this card is. I'd say if you're on a budget, go ahead and get it for 200 bucks new or less used. But no more than that. If you have more money, get a better card.

Picked up a open box rx6600 at microcenter for $169 I don't think you can get better performance per dollar at that price and the card is a super capable 60 fps 1080p gpu one game I played callisto protocol played butter smooth at high settings and got a rock solid 60 fps

I have a Powercolor 6600 XT and I fucking hate it. Idk if it's the AMD software or what but it doesn't ever go above like 20% utilization unless I'm doing heavy shit. Its like it intentionally downclocks itself. Power is fine, temps are fine. My last Sapphire RX 580 started artifacting after 3-4 months and couldn't get warranty. Idk if it's just bad luck but 6600 XT will be my last AMD GPU.

Honestly it isn't that amazing of a buy in the sense that you'll probably have to replace it earlier than a 6700xt or 6600xt even. The extra time you get with those more powerful cards is worth some level of drop in immediate cost/perf
