Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 is a well-regarded RDNA2 GPU from 2020 that still holds up as a capable 1440p gaming card in 2025, with hundreds of Reddit users vouching for its reliability and efficiency. Community consensus calls it the sweet spot of its generation — better rasterization performance than the RTX 3070, 16GB of VRAM that gives it surprising longevity, and a power draw that stays surprisingly low for its performance tier. AMD driver stability concerns that haunted earlier generations rarely surface in discussions about this card, with most owners reporting smooth sailing. However, as a nearly five-year-old card, its window is visibly closing — newer unoptimized games and demanding titles with heavy ray tracing are exposing its age, and newer alternatives like the RX 9060 XT 16GB are now competing at similar used price points. It remains a solid buy at the right used price, particularly for 1080p to 1440p gamers who don't prioritize ray tracing or the latest upscaling features.

Pros

  • 16GB of VRAM gives it meaningful longevity — at a time when 8GB and 10GB cards struggle at 1440p, the 6800's VRAM headroom keeps it relevant in newer titles
  • Exceptional power efficiency for a GPU of its performance tier — users consistently report running it undervolted at 130–170W while maintaining strong frame rates
  • Strong 1440p rasterization performance that outpaces the RTX 3070 by roughly 10–15%, yet was often priced similarly, making it one of the better value GPUs of its generation
  • Outstanding overclocking and undervolting potential — multiple users report meaningful performance gains with minimal effort, and the card is well-supported by AMD's Adrenalin tuning tools
  • Driver stability has proven solid in practice, with far fewer real-world complaints than AMD's historical reputation would suggest, especially when using default or lightly tuned settings
  • Excellent used market value — regularly found in the $280–$400 range, often beating newer budget cards on raw rasterization performance per dollar

Cons

  • Ray tracing performance is a known weak point — AMD's first-generation RT implementation on RDNA2 falls significantly behind Nvidia cards of the same era, making RT-heavy games like Cyberpunk or Metro Exodus largely impractical
  • No official FSR4 support — AMD excluded RDNA2 from its newest upscaling generation, leaving owners relying on community mods or older FSR versions while newer cards pull ahead in upscaling quality
  • At current used prices of $350–$400, newer cards like the RX 9060 XT 16GB or even the RX 7800 XT offer better value, making the 6800 a harder sell unless found below $300
  • Increasingly challenged by poorly optimized modern titles — unoptimized UE5 games and titles like Battlefield 6 are pushing the card to its limits at 1440p, signaling that its competitive window is narrowing fast
  • No DLSS support and no native AMD frame generation for RDNA2 — while AFMF exists as a driver-level workaround, it doesn't match the quality of Nvidia's DLSS Frame Gen
  • Occasional VR driver issues reported — some users flagged that certain driver updates broke VR compatibility, requiring rollbacks or workarounds in specific headset and game combinations

Is 16GB of VRAM Still the RX 6800's Biggest Advantage?

While competitors from its generation shipped with 8GB and 10GB, the RX 6800's VRAM headroom has quietly kept it competitive in newer titles. Reddit users consistently credit the 16GB as the reason they haven't felt compelled to upgrade — even as the GPU architecture itself starts to show its age.

Reddit's Verdict: One of AMD's Best Value GPUs Ever Made

Across multiple threads and hundreds of comments, the RX 6800 earns consistent praise as a generational value standout — users frequently compare it to the GTX 1080 Ti in terms of price-to-longevity ratio. The community consensus is clear: if you can find one at the right used price, it still competes.

The Window Is Closing — And Reddit Knows It

Recent threads show a shift in tone: long-time 6800 owners are starting to acknowledge that the card's era is ending. No FSR4, weakening RT support, and newer budget alternatives at similar used prices are all chipping away at the case for picking one up in late 2025.

Went from a r9 390 to a 1080ti to sapphire pulse rx 6800, all great cards honestly. Never had a problem with either brands.

6800 non XT was even better value, although both were excellent.

People go for nvidia because it's either all they ever know or they really need ray tracing, upscalers and CUDA. Personally I can't stand upscalers (only game at 4k native) and the games I play either don't have ray tracing or it's a half assed attempt, so radeon was the only logical option.

It's getting pretty rare but the 6800 is usually a good value card if you can find it. Great at 1440p. At $420 in the US right now for example it's hard to beat.

I would def go 6800. All things being equal I would go Nvidia, but 6800 is above the 3070 in my opinion.

Option 2 gives you a 10% faster GPU with double the VRAM, double the RAM and 4x the SSD capacity, pretty much a no-brainer. AMD drivers for the RX 6000 series are alright despite what some people might say — I've been using the RX 6900 XT for over a year now and it's been running great.

Yes, it's a very good card and basically the only card to consider in its price range.

Rocking one of these to this day. Runs anything and will run anything for a long time.

I swore I would never buy an ATi/AMD card ever again after several bad experiences in the past. But the Covid shit show forced me into buying a RX 6800 XT. And it's been a great overall experience. No driver issues, great performance and the software experience with adrenaline is much better than what team green is offering.

rx6800 is a great GPU. Most power efficient GPU of the last generation as well. Has 16gb of VRAM so it will be good for longevity as well. If you can find a good price compared to other GPUs, I would get it for sure.

I have an RX 6800 right now and it has been pulling its weight far more than I could have ever imagined. Zero driver issues, amazing overclocker, amazing undervolter, weirdly efficient power draw, etc. I haven't been able to throw a game at it that it won't play well. Even the Oblivion remaster has been running at like 90-100 fps.

I literally upgraded to the 6800 non-XT in November from a 2060. It's simply a fantastic card — I'm still running new releases on 1440p high settings at great frame rates.

I have the Asus TUF variant, played Cyberpunk on 1440p @120hz flawlessly. It is a very solid card.

RDNA2 was the last real effort from Radeon. They've slipped further in each of the last two generations, coming up with excuses. I hope UDNA is a real advancement.

If you bought like three or four years ago you can probably get a few more years out of it still.

The thing is an absolute beast. I love mine. Sold my 1 year old 5700 XT for the same price it cost me and miraculously bought the XFX 6800 XT at the beginning of the COVID craze for MSRP. It's been a blast for 1440p ever since.

Yes good gpu, close to being on par with 9060xt 16gb but only lacks in FSR4 support/power consumption.

I owned a Sapphire RX 6800 reference model for like 8 months before upgrading to my XTX and I have to say... The RX 6800 was a stellar card for high refresh 1440p gaming. If I didn't get an amazing offer to buy the XTX for 600 I would still be using my old card!!

I can't really praise my 6800 non XT enough, the price to performance and availability has made it feel like a unicorn card. So few people seem to have one. Have experienced very few issues and I like the software.

I love my 6800xt but unfortunately have many issues with drivers in VR. A new driver comes out and I can't update because it's a coin flip on if it will break VR in certain games.

As a 6800 user, was good 18 months ago but we're at a point where there is seriously better options for a similar price. Keep in mind this is an almost 5 year old card, it doesn't have RT and it is in an unfortunate point in its life where the drivers just aren't helping it stay alive. It's a good card but I really think you can find a better deal elsewhere my friend.

Still using it too, had the same setup with 5600 & 6800 (NON-XT). Then found a 5700x3d which expanded the gpu lifespan. One of the most efficient vfm gpus ever.

I own one after using a Vega 56 for 5 years. As long as its performance is up to par or if I don't have any issues in the years to come, I see no reason to upgrade. I don't get why people constantly feel the need to upgrade each time a new card comes out.

To be honest not the greatest price. Have a look at RX 9060xt 16GB or RX 7800xt.

Yup, 6800XT would be definitely the 1080ti of AMD brand. However it got some unlucky timeline where RT adoption became growing pretty fast — 1080ti wasn't challenged by any of this, not to mention upscaling.

For the cheap price of free, it's amazing! Now, it's a good starter 1440p GPU for gaming or a strong 1080p one. At least, for non-raytraced games. Enjoy it!

AMDs third best gpu in 2020, still has more video memory than many gpus on the market which will keep it going effectively for several more years I expect.

I'm using the 6800xt and it's been great. My only real complaint about AMD is that AMD prices hardware poorly at launch and lags behind Nvidia when it comes to features, but none of that matters enough to me today to make me hate them. All I do on a PC is game, maybe watch some YT. The 6800xt is perfect to me.

The rx6800 is a strong card but yes we can see that horizon now. The RT can be crippling. For example, I'm looking at BF6 and ain't too sure my solid 1440p is gonna hit 100fps with scaling. The window is closing. And unoptimized modern games ain't groovy on it.

It is the new 1080ti easily. The performance is nuts and the market knows. It's always more expensive than the obsolete 3080 and its pathetic 10gb of vram that gets consumed in any 1440p game.

It is a decent GPU, albeit from 2 generations behind. It can still run newer AAA games on 1440p very well. AMD's ray tracing on that generation was AMD's first attempt, so it's there but far behind NVidia's. Non ray tracing performance is very good, though.

Last week bought a used 6800 (nonXT) reference model for 350€ to replace my 1080TI after 6 years. Oh man what a blast. Double FPS, half the power draw. I reduced the core clock another 100Mhz (5%) and got the power draw down from 180watts to 130watts. 5% less performance at most. Amazing card.

My chief complaint with AMD GPUs is lack of features compared to nVidia cards, e.g. they are always 1 gen late to the party with RT, upscalers, frame gen, etc. In that sense, why would you pay a premium price for a top shelf GPU that is a generation behind in features? On the creator side, nVidia cards have better support in most apps mainly due to CUDA.

Got a 6800XT in 2022 for less than 600 bucks, still working like a charm, can even achieve ~1it/s at 1m pixels in stable diffusion XL models, which is awesome for AMD cards.

It's a mid range card from a couple of generations ago still fine for 1080p and could definitely do some games at 1440p. As long as you don't use RT as it's bad on the 6000 series.

My rx6800 coupled with a 5800x on AMD 4 still does the job at 1440p without problem, I'm just waiting for AMD 6 to load so don't worry.

Got one new from bestbuy for $320 on black friday. 1440p on high/ultra on most games. It's also pretty efficient too — overclocked and undervolted drawing 160-170W.

Got a 6800 XT Taichi from a friend for almost nothing in 2021. It's been such an amazing card. I really want a 9070 XT, but playing at 1440p, I just can't find a way to rationalize the upgrade at the current prices.
