Summary

The RX 6800 XT has earned a legendary reputation in the AMD community, widely compared to the GTX 1080 Ti in terms of generational value. Reddit sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with owners regularly praising its 16GB VRAM, strong 1440p performance, and serious overclocking headroom. The card launched at $649 MSRP but COVID-era pricing pushed it well above that for most buyers, yet even at inflated prices users feel they got their money's worth years later. It sits comfortably in the high-end tier, competitive with the RTX 3080 in raster performance, though it falls short in ray tracing and lacks hardware-level DLSS equivalent. The community consensus in 2025 is that it remains a very capable card — especially for those who picked it up used around $300–$400.

Pros

  • 16GB GDDR6 VRAM gives it substantial longevity — owners frequently note zero texture or memory issues at 1440p and even 4K, while 10GB 3080 users are already struggling with newer titles
  • Outstanding 1440p performance with owners hitting 150+ FPS in competitive titles like CoD and Apex, and stable 100+ FPS in most AAA games at high/ultra settings without upscaling
  • Exceptional overclocking ceiling — AIB models like the Powercolor Red Devil and XFX MERC 319 regularly hit 22,000+ in 3DMark TimeSpy with stock cooling, with some users holding world records on stock coolers
  • AMD's open-source Linux drivers are a major advantage over Nvidia for Linux users — drivers ship with the kernel and just work out of the box, a key reason many switched from a 3080 to this card
  • The non-XT 6800 variant is nearly as strong and draws ~50W less, making it one of the most efficient cards of the RDNA2 generation — still handles 4K at 60fps locked with FSR
  • Used market pricing around $250–$350 in 2024–2025 makes it one of the best value GPUs available — buyers consistently report it outperforms expectations at that price point

Cons

  • Ray tracing performance is significantly weaker than Nvidia — less than half the FPS of an RTX 3080 in the most demanding RT titles like Minecraft RTX, making RT gaming impractical without FSR frame gen
  • No hardware DLSS equivalent at launch — AMD's FSR is a shader-based solution that works on all GPUs, meaning it doesn't provide the same AI-accelerated quality advantage, especially at lower base resolutions
  • Hotspot temperatures run high by default (100–106°C junction reported on multiple AIB models) — most owners recommend undervolting or repasting with PTM7950 to bring temps under control
  • Some AIB brands carry real quality risks — community broadly warns against Gigabyte standard models and Biostar; Sapphire, Powercolor, and XFX are the trusted brands with Sapphire being hardest to find used
  • AV1 hardware encode is absent — users who do streaming or video editing with AV1 footage need to step up to RDNA3 (7000 series), as the 6800 XT only supports older encode standards
  • Now roughly 40% slower than current-gen cards like the RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti — still capable but the upgrade math is getting harder to ignore for heavy 4K or high-refresh gaming

The Undervolt Nobody Told You About

Out of the box, the 6800 XT runs hot — junction temps hitting 100–106°C are common across AIB models. But owners consistently report that a simple undervolt (around 1030–1080mV) combined with raising the minimum clock frequency brings hotspot temps down by 20°C+ with no performance loss. It's essentially a required first step that Reddit treats as common knowledge.

Why So Many Linux Users Chose This Over a 3080

A recurring thread in the community isn't about gaming performance at all — it's about driver philosophy. AMD's open-source drivers ship with the Linux kernel and require zero configuration, while multiple users describe spending days wrestling with Nvidia drivers only to have them break again after a distro update. For Linux desktop users, the 6800 XT is a near-unanimous recommendation regardless of raw performance.

Used Under $300: The Sleeper Deal That Won't Last

While new GPU prices have spiraled, the 6800 XT has quietly become one of the best used market buys available. Users across r/buildapc report finding clean examples for €250–300 in Europe and $300–400 in the US — prices where the card's 16GB VRAM and strong 1440p performance make it nearly impossible to beat. The window is closing as more buyers discover this, and regional preference for Nvidia in some markets (like Kosovo) creates brief local bargains.

Don't worry about terminology. It's a great card that runs 1440p beautifully.

Great card. People that tell you that it's mid have no clue. I do have the non XT version and it's perfect for 1440p ultra on games like Cyberpunk, RE4 remake and so on.

Yes. It will outperform the majority of cards on the market.

AMD driver problems are wildly over exaggerated. I bought a 6900xt very soon after release and drivers are solid as a rock at 2700mhz at 1440p high refresh rate and it even does very well at 4k.

So it's between 3080 and 3090 at 1440p, loses to both in 4K, and ray-tracing is just above 2080ti. Perf/$ and Perf/W are competitive between both sides now.

People are nuts here. It was a 800 quid card with only one card from AMD better in that generation. It's a high end card.

I have one and I'd classify it as mid high. I can run virtually anything over 60fps on mostly high settings with some ultra and that's at 3440x1440.

The cost-per-frame chart is illuminating; the 6800XT is the second best value per frame at 1440p, edged out by the 3070 ($4.14 vs $4.00) — but with 22% better performance.

I was worried about going AMD again. The 6800xt has been wrecking the 2080ti in every way for about 8 months now. No issues. Can overclock like crazy too before it will crash. Solid ass card.

None of them are that bad except used mining cards. Sapphire, Powercolor, and XFX all have good models of 6800 XT. Those are the big three AMD card manufacturers.

You won't be able to find a better card for 300€, it's still good even for 1440p gaming. I'd say go for it.

Those cards would be asus and gigabyte, of course a lot of users with these are enjoying them there's just more reports of problems with them. Stick to sapphire or powercolor.

The 6800 XT is an amazing value, got mine a month ago and there is no game I can't max the settings on. Better than the 4070 and in some instances the 4070Ti.

I literally upgraded to the 6800 non-xt in November from a 2060. It's simply a fantastic card I'm still running new releases on 1440 high settings at great frame rates

Sapphire and Power Color are the best, XFX is fine. Avoid biostar and Gigabyte unless it's Aorus. Also make sure you have a good PSU and connect with separated power cables, don't ever use daisy chain power cables on radeon cards.

If you're a previous AMD owner, great choice going with the 6800 XT. If you're a previous Nvidia owner, great choice going with a 6800 XT. Learn how to undervolt — it makes a real difference.

There are a noticeable amount of people out there still using the 1080ti GPU. Just because it's a generation older doesn't mean the rx6800xt is unusable. It's still the same GPU that it was three years ago, but less expensive.

I've had mine for 2 years now and I have not come across a game that I'm not satisfied by its performance on 1440p. Have not had to make any quality compromises yet for decent fps either.

RDNA2 was the last real effort from Radeon. They've slipped further in each of the last two, coming up with excuses.

If you're willing to make a few compromises this card CAN do pretty solid 4k gaming as well. It's literally the best value card in existence at the moment.

I think the biggest difference in the 6800 and 6800 XT is the overclocking ability. I don't think you will be disappointed with the 6800 for game play. I think you're fretting over something that is perceived as inadequate but is actually very good.

I finished the new Jedi Survivor game before the first patch hit while running RT on an RX6800 at 4k. Obviously FSR was doing quite a bit of work and it wasn't nearly as smooth as it is now, with newer drivers and a few patches, but it worked.

I still get 150fps+ on cod/warzone in 1440 and 240 fps locked on apex. It's still a good card for the price range these days.

I'm sitting here right now in Microsoft flight simulator 1440p ultra native resolution and I have 72 FPS in the air and 68 to 70 on the ground. It's incredibly capable. I have a very mild overclock on mine and it beats my 3080 now.

Yup, 6800XT would be definitely 1080ti of AMD brand. However it got some unlucky timeline where RT adoption became growing pretty fast - 1080ti wasn't challenged by any of this, not to mention upscaling.

It's still a pretty capable 1440p card for high refresh-rate gaming. Not great for ray tracing, though. 4K high refresh-rate gaming is out of this card's reach without FSR.

Reference cards, the XT is around 8-15% faster. But once you start factoring in custom AIB cards the difference differential between the two 6800 models blows out by a fair bit more due to better cooling of AIB 6800 XTs.

I have the same gpu, as long as your airflow is good it's a great gpu. I undervolted mine to keep the hotspot down.

I loaded up the game on my 6800XT and left pretty much everything at the default medium settings and the game is like melted butter. Considering the cost of newer cards these days, I think that'll do, pig.

It is the new 1080ti easily. The performance is nuts and the market knows. It's always more expensive than the obsolete 3080 and its pathetic 10gb of vram that gets consumed in any 1440p game.

Many OC variants are famous with their 23K timespy scores with stock 3 fan cooling, over 19K stock average. I hold world record with I5-13600k on my powercolor red devil 6800XT with stock cooler.

A simplified rule is: does it have more than 8 GB of VRAM? As this is a 16 GB model, I'd say it's good.

Today I bought a perfect condition 6800 xt sapphire for 250 in kosovo. Locals prefer nvidia rather than amd, that's why it is so cheap in here.

I have this same exact card and am generally happy with it. Though mine had some hiccups. I was getting high hotspot temps and a big delta, but a repaste with thermalright tfx fixed that. This card also has more coil whine than any other card I've ever had.

6000 series AMD cards are amazing, driver issues are definitely blown way out of proportion. I absolutely loved my Red Devil 6950xt, only reason I moved on to the 4080 was because of MSFS VR.

I've had r9 290, rx480, rx580, 5700xt, 6600xt, 6750xt, 6800xt and now a 7900xt. Never once had a driver issue. AMD is much better value for money than Nvidia.

I have had this since launch, really put it through its paces. It's a beast of a card man, you're gonna enjoy it. I still can't believe how good 6800xt is tbh. Can play pretty much all games 4k max settings.

Got a 6800 XT Taichi from a friend for almost nothing in 2021. It's been such an amazing card. I really want a 9070 XT, but playing at 1440p, I just can't find a way to rationalize the upgrade at the current prices.

Still rocking red devil 6800xt and get capped fps on wow 144 fps capped on cod never budges and around 70 in assassins creed 1440p near max settings. To compare it to a 9070xt it's only about a 5% increase in most single player titles of 2025, absolutely not worth me upgrading unless I'm willing to spend 2500 AUD on 5080.

In mid 2023 it's the step in between mid and high. When it was released it was straight up high end. If you manage to score it for 400/450 usd it's a very good bargain. Otherwise it's just better to spend that 100 more and get the 7800xt.
