Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT is a solid 1440p-capable mid-range GPU that Reddit generally respects once prices dropped from its overpriced $450 launch to the $349–$380 sweet spot. It's built from binned Navi 32 dies, shares silicon with the 7800 XT, and delivers performance roughly on par with the older RX 6800 — making it a decent but uninspiring generational step. Driver stability is mostly a non-issue for the majority of users, though a vocal minority have dealt with crashes and stutters that required rolling back to older driver versions. It's best suited for 1080p and moderate 1440p gaming, particularly for buyers coming from cards like the RX 5700 XT or GTX 1070 Ti who want a meaningful, reliable upgrade without chasing the latest generation.

Pros

  • Solid 1080p and moderate 1440p performance — users upgrading from RX 5700 XT or GTX 1070 report roughly 30–50% gains in real-world gaming
  • 12GB of VRAM gives it a comfortable buffer over the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti at similar or lower price points, especially relevant as modern games push VRAM limits
  • Runs cool and quiet across all AIB models — Reddit consensus is that any dual-fan variant keeps temps in check, making model selection mostly a price game
  • AFMF2 (AMD Fluid Motion Frames) is widely praised as a genuine value-add, effectively doubling perceived framerates in supported titles at this performance tier
  • Can be overclocked to 7800 XT-adjacent performance — same Navi 32 die means headroom exists, with users hitting 3GHz+ clocks on unlocked models
  • FSR 4 now unofficially works on RDNA 3 cards including this one, with official support likely incoming — extends the GPU's software lifespan significantly

Cons

  • Launch pricing at $450 was widely mocked — performance lands almost exactly at RX 6800 levels, which was available for $360–$380 at the same time
  • The RX 7800 XT at $50–$100 more offers meaningfully better value: more CUs, lower power draw in some configurations, and better long-term positioning
  • Driver issues still bite a subset of users — black screens, random crashes, and post-alt-tab stutters are reported across multiple threads, often requiring downgrades to versions like 24.3.1 or 24.9
  • Only 12GB VRAM compared to the RX 6800's 16GB — at $350–$380, the older card's extra memory headroom makes the choice legitimately difficult
  • Power consumption is higher than expected for a cut-down die — some XFX models draw more than the 7800 XT due to poor voltage binning, not the architecture itself
  • Faces stiff internal competition: the 9060 XT 16GB at $299 is now faster, has more VRAM, better RT, and supports FSR 4 natively — making the 7700 XT a tough sell in 2025

Is the RX 7700 XT Worth It Now That Prices Have Dropped?

At launch, Reddit nearly universally panned the 7700 XT for matching the older RX 6800 at a $90 premium. But at $349 with a game bundle included, the calculus shifted — users who'd been sitting on RX 5700 XTs and GTX 1070s started pulling the trigger, calling it a no-brainer upgrade at that price.

AMD's Bin Card Accidentally Became a Value Pick

Built from leftover Navi 32 dies that couldn't qualify as 7800 XTs, the 7700 XT was never meant to be the star of the show. Yet Reddit users note it shares the exact same silicon as the 7800 XT — meaning with the right overclock, the performance gap shrinks to near zero, making it a sleeper deal for tinkerers.

Linux Gamers See More Hiccups Than Windows Users

While Windows users mostly report clean driver experiences after initial setup, Linux users running Mesa drivers have hit consistent issues: power throttling bugs, LACT configuration headaches, and CPU bottleneck interactions on older Ryzen chips that can make the card feel no faster than a GTX 1070 out of the box.

Itll be a 5060 competitor but with 16gb, since its on an older node means it should be cheaper too, idk why people are complaining, this is great. If they put it at 279 it wouldnt be so bad

If prices stay low that might finally be a decent 2070 Successor.

Should be 350 at most.. and to say that something is a better choice than a 4060ti is not impressive at all..

Yep, the writing was on the wall once they announced specs and pricing. The 7700XT fulfilled its role in upselling the 7800XT, I guess. Once it goes down in price it would be a great option, like the 7900XT or the 6700XT before it, which also got roasted in reviews based on MSRP.

Bought my 6700xt for $330 2-3 years ago. Crazy that RDNA3 is taking this long to fall.

Pricing will dictate how well this product does. $225 and it will sell like hotcakes. $270 is okay value and it will entice possible 5060 buyers with the extra VRAM at the expense of features and a small amount of performance. $300 and it won't move the needle.

Best ad for the 6800 I've seen. You save some money while winning some vram and getting the same/better performance. Somehow it doesn't even use more power than the 7700xt

6750Xt is still $330 brand new. Let that sink in.

Pro equivalent GPU for $350 is a good deal. Should've been the price from launch maybe AMD would've moved some units.

Huh, I had never imagined that a lower tier product (7700XT) would use more power than a higher tier product (7800XT). I guess the 7700XT has some really poor bins. I agree with Steve's assessment, if they knock the price down to $400 it will be a more compelling option. It's a bit meh at $450, better to just get the 7800XT.

The 7700XT exists to push people to buying the 7800XT. As I see it, if you're looking at spending $500 for a GPU, granted the 7800XT is available right there and then to purchase, an extra $50 isn't going to break the bank, and if it does, maybe you shouldn't be looking at $500 GPU's as getting the 7700XT would only be doing yourself a disservice considering the 7800XT is easily worth that extra 10% in cost.

I actually picked up mine for $389.99, mere weeks before this price drop, but luckily it qualified for 2 bundles with 2 games each so I ended up getting Space Marines 2, Lies of Pi, Starfield (not just standard but the $100 premium edition) and then later when it comes out, Unknown 9: Awakening. Free games are free games.

Would be a much easier sell if it had 16GBs of VRAM like the RX6800.

Well, same number of CUs (and SE, SA etc) but more RAM, newer process, RDNA 3 design with all that that implies. If AMD finally releases FSR 4 for RDNA 3 officially, it will be significantly better.

If price is all that matters than perhaps the 6800. But if you care about having a newer architecture and lower power consumption, than the 7700 XT.

I got the 7700xt recently. I put it in an older system as an upgrade. I'm running a ryzen 5 3600x with 32gb ram. All my games perform a lot better now, they're still all 'GPU bound', so its not getting bottlenecked by the cpu. It uses roughly the same amount of power, so I didn't need to upgrade my PSU. I game at 3440x1440 and it's running everything at about 35-30% faster than my 5700XT and it runs about 20 degrees cooler.

Still $100 more than they should be charging for such a mediocre GPU.

AMD probably wants to capitalize on all the 8GB GPU hate. If you want to get a cheap card with 16GB RAM, this is it.

7700XT for only $380 is a really good value sometimes even beating the 4070 or right behind it. Get the 7800XT if you want some extra power.

Meh product that pretty much only exists to upsell the 7800 XT which is more appealing. Also, another disappointment looking at RDNA 3 architecture itself as a whole, it has same performance as previous gen RDNA 2 RX 6800 but also same power consumption? Where is gen to gen performance / efficiency improvement between RDNA 2 and RDNA 3?

The 350$ price with the game bundle (I was going to buy space marine 2 anyways) makes this a no brainer for me. Moving up from the 6700 xt to the 7700 xt seems like its a pretty decent gen over gen upgrade.

This is great for compute workloads, where only memory bandwidth and capacity matters. I'd happily trade in my 7700 XT for a 7700.

The 7700XT will be a bit better in some games, parity in others. The 6800 is great if you're not worried about RT performance, plus it has an extra 4GB of VRAM. Most gamers live without RT just fine. A 2K or 4K image is going to look great even with raster.

Performance is good - way better than the 6700xt (which launched at $479) and way better than anything Nvidia has in the price range. According to Techpowerup its overclocking potential is great and they had it running at >3ghz, giving 4070/6800xt performance.

I'm so glad I found this comment. I am rocking a 5700 XT and 11700k on a 3440x1440 display. I just purchased the 7700 XT for $350 and includes two games (Space Marine 2 and something else). I already wanted Space Marine 2, so I feel like I'm basically getting the card for $290. I originally wanted the 7800 XT, but it's about $150 more. I have a little bit of FOMO, but I don't think a 15% improvement is worth $150.

The 7700xt doesn't really run hot enough for minor differences in cooling systems to matter as long as they're at least two fan cards, just grab whatever one is the cheapest. If you want a better warranty I like the AMD only manufacturers, powercolor, XFX and sapphire. IME they do right by their customers when they have a problem.

FSR4 works unofficially on RDNA3 in Linux and now in Windows. I'd be shocked if official support isn't added soon.

It hurts because I noticed that 20 seconds after I paid £250 for an RX 6750 XT on eBay Ebuyer. I tried to cancel the order but they lightening shipped it out. It arrived at my house 13 hours later so can't complain too much.

Had use my pc for almost 2 months built it last august. I can say that i've never seen flickering or green stuff. I got game crashes on the first week of use but it was just mainly my fault since it was hard for me transitioning from nvidia to amd. I had all my drivers updated to the latest and i could have never been happier. Never got game crashes or crashing in general after me adjusting to switching to amd from nvidia

7700 xt here and no problems (but I had a lot of drivers crash in the past with some drivers). I use an old driver and is very stable. I get problems when I overclock it too much. But I found the stable overclock to be at 2700mhz and undervolt to 1000mV and that's it, no issues! Also I use it for gaming at 4k or 1800p with FSR at 60hz only!

I would have bought it a long time ago at $350. Ended up getting a 7800xt that was way more power than I needed for $480 because the 7700xt at the time was a ripoff at $450

Spoiler alert: they suck dick real bad. Just got mine. Furmark at full use, no throttle, 50 mins, 260-270 W usage at 100%. Played metro exodus for 10 mins, not even 80% gpu use, black screen crash with quick reboot at 160W usage. GPU is brand new, just installed. I think it is the drivers, will try an older version. Say what you want about Nvidia and their prices but at least it is plug and play and not plug and fucking diagnose why you can't game. Second GPU i purchase from AMD, second time i have driver issues.

dude i just got my 7700 xt literally yesterday and it stutters like crazy, cant even play sm2 normally without insane stutters. i couldn't tell if it was the way i put the card in, if i plugged from the psu wrongly, then last guess was the drivers, even updated it sucks ass i dont know how to fix it

in my case it's actually probably AMD driver issue although i've only encounter 1 minor issue within the last 8 months, for some reason whenever i alt tab from anything back to my game it stutter a lot for 2 seconds, search it up on reddit and someone said Adrenalin is the problem so i uninstall Adrenalin and it's working fine now

Same just got from Best Buy 2 weeks ago, it was between 6800 or the 7700 XT and what pushed me over was the 4 extra GB of ram since performance is pretty much equal. Free copy of Space Marine 2 would've been nice tho.
