Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 is a well-received midrange GPU that has earned genuine praise from owners for its exceptional power efficiency, solid 1440p and 4K performance, and strong value at MSRP. Community sentiment is largely positive, with many users upgrading from older AMD cards like the 6700 XT and 7800 XT reporting significant generational gains. The card runs notably cool and quiet, uses only two 8-pin connectors, and fits into 650W power supplies — making it accessible to a wider range of builds than the XT variant. The main caveats are a competitive GPU market where pricing against Nvidia's 5070 varies heavily by region, and AMD's historically complicated driver rollouts, though most current owners report stable performance after updates.

Pros

  • Outstanding power efficiency — widely cited as the most efficient 16GB GPU available, with many users undervolting to under 170W while retaining near-XT performance levels
  • Strong raster performance beating the RTX 5070 in most benchmarks with 16GB VRAM vs 12GB, making it a better long-term investment at similar price points
  • Compatible with 650W PSUs using two standard 8-pin connectors, avoiding the costly PSU upgrade often required by the 9070 XT's higher power draw
  • Excellent 1440p gaming experience with headroom to spare — owners report maxed settings in most AAA titles without needing upscaling
  • FSR 4 support brings competitive upscaling quality, and Optiscaler extends FSR 4 to non-native supported titles, reducing the DLSS gap significantly
  • Compact, quiet AIB models like the Sapphire Pulse reach sub-55°C under full load, making it ideal for small form factor or noise-sensitive builds

Cons

  • Ray tracing and path tracing performance lags noticeably behind Nvidia's RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti — a real concern for players prioritizing games with heavy RT or PT workloads
  • MSRP availability has been inconsistent globally — while US prices have settled near $529–$599, many EU and non-US markets see 20–40% markups over AMD's announced price
  • AMD's Adrenalin software is widely criticized as clunkier and less intuitive than Nvidia's control panel, especially for newcomers switching from GeForce
  • The non-XT's value proposition weakens in markets where the price gap versus the XT shrinks to under $50–$70, making the XT the obvious choice at that delta
  • Driver stability issues, while largely resolved through updates, were a real problem at launch — a handful of users still report occasional crashes, particularly in games using FSR in-game settings
  • No hardware MFG (Multi-Frame Generation) equivalent — AMD's FSR Frame Gen tops out at 2x interpolation versus Nvidia's up to 4x, which matters for competitive or high-refresh-rate gaming

The Efficiency Card Nobody Expected AMD to Build

Owners are stunned by how little power the RX 9070 draws under real gaming loads — many report staying under 170W with a mild undervolt while matching near-XT framerates, something even dedicated efficiency-focused Nvidia cards can't match at this tier.

A $599 Card That's Actually $750 in Half the World

The community's biggest frustration isn't the GPU itself — it's AMD's fake MSRP launch strategy. Retailers outside the US were never bound by the advertised price, and eight months passed before US buyers could consistently find MSRP stock, undermining every value comparison made at launch.

Linux Users Have Found Their GPU

A recurring theme in discussions is how strongly the RX 9070 performs on Linux thanks to open-source AMDGPU drivers — users running Mint, Fedora, and Arch report better stability and performance than Windows in some titles, making it the go-to recommendation in the Linux gaming community.

Getting one of those at MSRP is a deal. I'm very happy with my Sapphire Pure that I got at UK MSRP.

Most RX 9070 XT models tested by Hardware Unboxed perform within about 5% of each other. XFX cards run cooler but use oversized coolers with higher fan speeds. The top performers were XFX Mercury, PowerColor Red Devil, Sapphire Nitro+, Sapphire PURE, and ASRock Taichi. The recommendation for the most reasonably priced RX9070XT was the PowerColor Hellhound as the best balance of size, noise, and performance.

I mean, you did not say anything about your experience using the card. Are you having any issues? There's no right or wrong on buying these GPUs. It's a matter of the what's a better deal given the current prices, your budget and your needs.

It was a fake MSRP all along. AMD gave rebates to retailers during the initial launch, after those ran out, we now see the real price. AMD never misses and opportunity to miss an opportunity.

I bought the 9070 for $580 when the cheapest 9070 XT was still selling for $700+. The price discrepancy has, historically, been a lot more than $50 for these cards.

the 9070 is superior to the 5070 so don't even consider that. only 9070 xt and 5070 ti are the better options, but for 100€ more you would only get 10-15% extra performance at the most, its up to u if its worth the extra.

As much as people like to knock the 9070 in favor of the XT, I like it. I game on a 1080p at 60fps. The 9070 seems plenty powerful enough for that. Video suggests it's one of the top power-efficient GPUs on the market. It fits my current 650W power supply with only two 8-pin plugs. I'd have to spend $150+ more on another to use the XT.

I undervolted 9070XT (-60mV right now, so far so good) and power limited to 165. Lost only 5 - 7% performance in Kingdom Come. Seems to depend on the game a bit.

Got a 9070XT on Black Friday, now that they're so cheap I couldn't resist. Really impressed with it, performance is great, runs pretty cool and Adrenaline is really nice to play around with undervolting and overclocking. Got a real nice undervolt on it.

'MSRP' 9070/XT existed for about 3 minutes on launch day. They handed out rebates to retailers to offer a small number of the cards at a fake price which is also the price they told reviewers it would be. Pretty shitty behaviour all around this gen.

Bought an XT last week cause stock has largely been sorted in the last few months and quite a few models have been under MSRP and that situation could change in the coming months because of the DRAM situation. I also wanted to go AMD since I moved to Linux so I've been pretty pleased. For as much as we complain this isn't really a bad time to buy a gpu.

I'd still pick and recommend the base 9070 OC over the XT variant just because the 9070xt is a power hungry card at 330w at full load. Yes, you can do power limit to up to 220w but the 9070 can also do that at 170w which makes it the best price to performance + power efficiency. And if you overclock the 9070, it can rival the base 9070xt in terms of performance with less power consumption.

The fact that AMD is still getting a pass for the fake MSRP thing is really disgusting to me. Yeah GPUs often get marked up and stuff but this gen had an explicitly fake price just to get reviews. I remember all these reviews for 5070 Ti being like 'An amazing card, but you'll only be able find it for $1000' and the same people about 9070 Ti were like, 'almost as good as 5070 Ti, but only $600!' Then I go to the shop and all the 5070 Ti models are $750 meanwhile the 9070 is $900.

I love my 9070! I'm in the third world so pricing is a bit funny here: I got my 9070 for cheaper than a 5070 so it was a no brainer for me. The xt and 5070ti were just too much for me. The 9070 landed up being a perfect sweet spot for the price and performance I got. I also would have needed a new PSU to go for more than the 9070.

I tried to get an XT but they sold out quickly, 9070 was going in and out of stock a lot and then I saw the price jump from £525 to £539 and they came back in stock and I said, F it, and pulled the trigger. Close enough to MSRP to be happy, like under 15 quid difference. Had been wanting a 7800 XT or 7900 GRE for a while now which the 9070 handily beats both of and if I got the XT version I would have probably had to upgrade my PSU too which I really wanted to avoid.

As a day 1 RX9070 owner, I can say I'm quite happy with it. I had some stability issues in windows early on, though those went away with driver updates and probably would've been completely avoided if I did a clean install, and it does suck when games only support the Nvidia features even though AMD has an alternative. Aside from that, performance has really solid. I play at 1440p, so regardless of the game I'm playing I know I can crank basically all the settings to the max, not bother with any upscaling.

Love my Hellhound, clean design, super quiet. I was actually about to go with XFX until I saw some reviews showing the fan speed much higher than I would like, I ended up getting the Hellhound and no regrets.

I managed to grab a Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC from OCUK at MSRP today. Very much looking forward to receiving it. Was originally planning on getting a 4070 super but they have never come back down. It's by far the most energy efficient 16GB card on the market.

I upgraded from a 3080 to a 9070ti and for me the performance boost has been well worth the price I paid. I bought it for $650. Went from 10gb of gpu memory to 16. All the games I play on it perform better at higher graphical settings. Was well worth it for me. It's not the most powerful card on the market but for the price it's better than what I had.

9070 and 9070xt are 2 of the most misunderstood products, the first is a very efficient, cool and quiet GPU, the second is a more power hungry, hotter, noisier and bigger GPU, for people who want to squeeze any extra performance. You decide which one is the better choice, even if both had same price. The choice shouldn't be made only by raw performance.

The 9070 is a perfect middle ground for price to performance when it comes to 1440p gaming, it surely is a lot better than the 5070 having only 12GB of VRAM which later on will start to struggle at 1440p. At 1440p you will only see 7fps to 10fps difference between the 9070 and 9070xt and exact same 1% lows.

The 9070 is the best. You could find them MSRP even early on because everyone was trying to get the XT version and they can be OCd well, run much cooler and you can convert it to almost XT performance with a bios mod pretty easily.

I made the decision to go for the 9070 as opposed to the xt variant. It was because i was building is sff. My rx 9070 sapphire, is almost silent and doesnt go over 54 degrees under full load. The sound was big for me as i often hook it up to a tv and it will never thermal throttle.

Runs pretty well overall with good performance and no major issues. I did have a few crashes caused by in-game FSR settings, but aside from that everything's been fine so far. Still, I personally prefer Nvidia for maximum comfort the Nvidia control panel and settings feel clearer and more straightforward, like just enabling DLSS Quality / RTX instead of tweaking a bunch of Adrenalin options but for the price it's really good.

Bought a 6800 reference card back in December 2020 and just got the 9070 today to replace it. For me the biggest draw was power to performance 220W vs 304W of the XT

Absolutely not. The difference between the 9070 and the XT is way, way, way less than the difference between the 5070 and the 5070ti. I'd be hard pressed to find any gaming scenario where something is playable on the XT but not on the 9070. Just turn down a setting or two, and you can make up for the difference. I got a 9070 on launch day at MSRP and have been extremely satisfied. I'm big on card efficiency, which is why I didn't go for the XT.

Actually just built the same PC, rx9070 and Ryzen 9600x. I am very impressed with the performance. 1440p counterstrike 2 on high runs me about 350fps in game, 250 at ultra everything. Borderlands 4 runs pretty steady at 1440p no upscaling (gets smooth 100fps with upscaling on quality, looks good too).

This graphics card is dogshit. It has the highest annoyance to cost ratio. Every single game that you play you will have to do some bullshit to prevent it from crashing. Don't even think about running two monitors on this. The AMD software if horrendous. Anything above 50% utilization, it crashes. Constantly having to enable it in device manager to prevent crashing. God forbid you update the driver, because it just bricks everything and you will have to reinstall the old drivers to play any game.

The problems are two: drivers and long term support. You'll only use it for gaming and probably drivers will be eol'd in 3 years, as already happened with the previous ones.

After going from AMD to Nvidia, raw perf doesn't really mean anything to me anymore. Transformer DLSS is so good it beats AMD at native res.
