Summary

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 is a Turing-generation GPU that launched at $699 and has aged into a solid used-market option for 1080p and playable 1440p gaming. Reddit sentiment is mostly positive among current owners who paid fair used prices, though the card was widely panned at launch for delivering 1080 Ti-level rasterization performance at a significant premium. Years later, real owners report getting great mileage out of it, especially paired with strong CPUs, but the consensus is clear: it's only a smart buy if acquired for $200 or less on the used market. The 8GB VRAM ceiling and lack of DLSS 3 / Frame Generation support are increasingly relevant concerns as owners look toward eventual upgrades.

Pros

  • Handles 1080p gaming effortlessly and delivers solid 1440p performance on most titles at medium-high settings, with owners reporting 100+ FPS in popular multiplayer games
  • DLSS support (gen 1 and 2) provides meaningful frame rate boosts in supported titles, helping the card punch above its raw rasterization numbers
  • Pairs well with high-end CPUs like the i9-12900K or Ryzen 7 5800X3D without becoming a bottleneck, making it a viable GPU to build around on a budget
  • Durable and long-lasting — many owners report 5-6 years of use with no issues, and the card continues to handle the majority of non-cutting-edge games without struggle
  • Broad game compatibility and mature driver support make it a low-friction daily driver for a wide range of genres and workloads including light creative work

Cons

  • At launch it matched the older GTX 1080 Ti in rasterization at the same or higher price — GN called it '1080 Ti version 3,' and the value criticism has never fully gone away
  • 8GB VRAM is a growing limitation in 2024+ titles, and unlike the 2080 Ti's 11GB, there's no headroom — the RX 6700 XT offers more VRAM and 25% faster performance for around $300
  • No DLSS 3 or Frame Generation support, which puts it at a significant feature disadvantage versus current-gen cards like the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti
  • Used market pricing is the biggest trap: Reddit consistently values it at $200 or less, and anything above $230 is considered a bad deal when 30-series cards are available nearby in price
  • Demanding newer titles like Alan Wake II and Cyberpunk with RT can bring the card to its knees, signaling that its ceiling for cutting-edge games has been reached
  • The RTX implementation on Turing is notably weak — ray tracing tanks performance significantly, making the 'RTX' branding largely cosmetic for practical gaming use

Six Years In, Owners Still Game at 1440p

Contrary to the sub's upgrade-everything culture, real 2080 owners report consistently smooth 1440p sessions across most genres. The card hasn't quit — it just struggles at the bleeding edge of demanding titles.

The Used Price Is Everything

Reddit has reached a near-universal consensus: the 2080 is worth it at $180–200, borderline at $230, and a bad deal at anything higher. A friend selling one for $270 sparked more than one 'that's not your friend' comment.

DLSS Saves It, But Frame Gen Skips It

DLSS 1 and 2 support gives the 2080 a meaningful boost in compatible titles, but the card is locked out of DLSS 3 and Frame Generation — a gap that becomes more noticeable as newer games adopt Nvidia's latest upscaling features.

Are we sure the "S" stands for "Super" and not just "Slightly better"?

S - Slight, U - Uptick in, P - Performance over, E - Existing, R - Regular. Overall doesn't seem particularly worth it compared to the price/performance gains of the 2070S

EXTRA EXTRA a $700 video card is faster than a $400 video card! OMG what a fucking revelation.

I understand it's not that much better than the 2080 but at least it's a bump for the same price at least.

A 2080 super is a little better than a 6700 and a 4060. 4060 ti and 6700 xt is much better and a 3060 ti is a little better than a 2080 super. You should be good at 1080p.

The RTX2080S is 17% faster at 1440p for 75% more price according to HWU. You decide whether that is better value or not.

Here's a slight upgrade because we don't want to risk cannibalizing the 2080 ti market with a product that costs barely more than half the 2080 ti's price. - nvidia, probably

This is pretty much what a lot of us were afraid of. The 2080FE = 1080Ti in performance during normal rasterization tasks.

Card is exactly like a 1080 ti but with RTX and $200+ more.

Just buy a used gtx 1080ti for 400-500 bucks and be happy.

I was playing at 1440p on my 2080 non-super. Aside from the most cutting edge games, it'll be great for 1080 and playable 1440. Especially since there have been so many good games in the last 5 years supporting rtx.

My buddy had a gaming pc with a 2080 super and a Ryzen 5 5600 and still got 100+ fps in COD, Forza, etc at 1440p with medium/high settings depending on the game.

13% faster then a 2070s would put it at 20% faster then the 5700xt. For $300 more. It'd be more or less equivalent in value if it was priced at $500. As is? It's absolutely pathetic.

He is not really a friend. For 270 you can get an used 3070, which is vastly superior in all aspects.

People will tell you to wait for the 50 series but unless you're getting the 5090/5080 you're looking at a good half year at LEAST after those are released until a 5070 come out. Fwiw I was in a pretty similar situation and went with the 4070 ti super.

I think performance is in line with what we should expect, it's pricing that is out of whack. But not surprising given AMD's poor showings lately and having no answer for the 20 series yet.

If you wanted a 2080, now you can get something for the same price but slightly better. You're getting a better deal, maybe old 2080s will be going cheaper on clearance but I think it's fair to say this was really underwhelming given the decent increases that 2060 super and 2070super offered.

I'm still using a 2080 non-super. It's been fine for 1440p for most games. Gonna be looking to upgrade it in a year or two though.

I used a 2080Ti with a 3440x1440 screen. I could still push out a 90ish fps at medium settings with most games. It still is a decent card, but you will see its limits if you want to push graphical settings depending on your resolution.

A 4060 is about $300 new and is arguably only slightly worse value. Maybe for 225 but not 270.

There's really not a noteworthy difference between the 2080 "super" and the regular 2080...

Jeez, getting absolutely shafted by your friend. A 6750xt brand new can be purchased for $300, and will do much better than his used 2080.

If it's being offered for free, take it. I still use my 2080 Super and I can still play the games I want at decent settings without trouble. You can use the money you save to buy a higher end CPU and more RAM and then upgrade to a newer gen GPU later.

I have a 12600k and a 2080s I play everything in either 1440 or 4k, depending on the game. First time I saw it truly start chugging was trying to play Alan Wake II, decided to save that game for when I upgrade to a 5xxx series.

2080super is a massive upgrade over a 960. it's right around 4060 performance which is pretty solid for 1080p gaming. The 4060 new price is kind of a bad value, so for free it's perfect.

I've got 2080 as well but I am leaning more to wait for the 50 series. I've been using it for 6 years, a couple of more months won't hurt too much and the new gen will prolly give more performance/cost.

My 2080 has served me well, I took forever to click the checkout button as it was/is (for now) the most I had spent on my PC. But getting 6 years out of it feels like I have more than justified my purchase!

Had em, a 2080 liquid cooled, 3060ti, 3070... All tested at least briefly in same system. Our top tier 2080 was very similar to, fits just between to 3060ti and 3070. Doubt i would buy one today simply because only used exists, probably find a little newer used 30 series for decent price too.

I used 2080 super for 5 years, before I updated my system. It is great, I was using for many shooters and MMORPG, now the new owner is enjoying it as well, so for you it is massive improvement, also will have DLSS, which is big improvement for some games, enjoy!

Horrible deal. 270 is way too much. You'd be better off spending 30 dollars more for a 4060, which has better performance, power consumption, and is much much newer.
