Summary

The RTX 2080 Ti occupies a unique spot in the used GPU market — it's a card that Reddit continues to debate years after launch, primarily because its 11GB of VRAM on a 352-bit bus makes it competitive with newer cards that cut corners on memory. Most users position it alongside the RTX 3070 in raw rasterization performance, but with a meaningful VRAM edge that matters at 1440p and for creative workloads. The community consensus is that it's a solid buy in the $180–$230 range, but sellers asking $270+ are pushing it given the availability of 3080s in that territory. Power consumption is a recurring concern — the card can spike well beyond its rated TDP, and users consistently warn about PSU headroom. Overall sentiment is cautiously positive: it's a capable card for budget builders, but one that requires some homework before buying used.

Pros

  • 11GB GDDR6 on a 352-bit bus gives it a VRAM advantage over the RTX 3070 (8GB) and most budget 40-series cards, making it relevant for 1440p gaming and workloads like Stable Diffusion or Blender
  • Raw rasterization performance sits close to the RTX 3070 and sometimes trades blows with the 3070 Ti depending on the workload, making it one of the most powerful used cards under $250
  • DLSS support (version 2.0+, including Ray Reconstruction) means upscaling quality is on par with the 30-series — only Frame Generation is missing
  • Wide memory bus (352-bit vs 128-bit on lower-end 40-series) delivers substantially higher memory bandwidth, which benefits texture-heavy and high-resolution workloads
  • Community-proven longevity — users are still running it confidently at 1440p ultra settings and even 4K with DLSS, years after its 2018 launch

Cons

  • Power draw is notoriously high with documented power spikes, and Nvidia officially recommends at least a 650W PSU — users report needing quality units at that wattage, not budget ones
  • Heavy cryptocurrency mining use during the 2018–2021 era means many used units have significant wear; Founders Edition cards are also notoriously difficult to repaste due to their cooler design
  • Ray tracing performance is noticeably behind the 30-series — users confirm the 2080 Ti struggles with fully path-traced titles and cannot sustain playable 4K framerates with RT enabled
  • At $260–$300, value erodes quickly — the RTX 3080 can be found for $50–$100 more and delivers a significant performance and RT leap, making pricing the biggest variable in the buying decision
  • The 11GB cap, while better than 8GB cards, is starting to show strain in texture-heavy titles and AI workloads that benefit from 16GB+ VRAM; the artificially cut memory bus (one chip disabled for segmentation) means it could have been 12GB

How Does the 2080 Ti Hold Up for Real Users Today?

Owners running it at 1440p report smooth gameplay in most titles, with DLSS helping close gaps in demanding games. The trouble starts at native 4K without upscaling, where settings compromises become unavoidable in modern AAA titles.

The VRAM Argument: Why Some Budget Builders Still Choose 2080 Ti Over 3070

Reddit's used GPU buyers keep returning to the 2080 Ti specifically because 8GB cards are increasingly hitting walls at 1440p, and the 11GB buffer provides meaningful headroom that same-price 30-series alternatives often can't match.

The 22GB Modded 2080 Ti Is a Real Thing — But Should You Buy One?

Hardware modders have successfully doubled the card's VRAM by replacing memory chips, with listings appearing on eBay for around $500. The community is fascinated but skeptical — the mod requires skilled soldering and has a high failure rate, making it a curiosity more than a practical upgrade path.

There must be a big hidden industry of VRAM upgrades for cheap pro cards?

I would personally. It's a 3070 with more vram. And for the RT fanatics out there, you should only be buying a 40 series anyway.

I'd personally want better RTX performance of a 3000 series card, but that deal doesn't sound too bad.

Lmao no, for 300 you can get a RTX 3070 easily, perhaps even less and it got better raytracing performance. Only get the 2080ti if VRam is important to you.

This is only good for Chinese market or similar where AI cards are all banned. In US you are able get a used 3090 pretty easily for just around $100 more.

There's nothing else at that price point that will touch it - it's roughly on par with an RTX 3070 or RX 6800, and 75-100% faster than your 1080.

4k dlss balanced/performance high/medium settings 60-90 fps in most games.... had it until recently, i play on 4k tv. Forget about ray tracing in 4k with that card.

I love the fact no one read the post so ill answer you OP yes the 2080ti is fine. is it the best especially at that price not really, can you wait a bit to see if you can find a faster higher vram card? if the answer is no buy the 2080ti if its yes save a bit and try to find a good deal on a 3090.

Id say better than 3070 as 3gb more vram, especially for 1440p.

Well, I bought the card. On Cyberpunk, my rasterization framerates are doubled. With RTX, it's about a 50% increase. Star Citizen is on average 50% increase as well. In VR in Assetto Corsa, I turned up the graphics settings to basically real life, and my FPS is sitting at the 90hz limit of my Q2.

Only card that can compete with VRAM in your budget with the 2080ti is the 3060 which you've stated isn't good enough. Yes the 2080ti is fine for your very, very specific use case where you need more than 8gb of VRAM.

Pointless. 8gb vram just ain't enough. The 2080ti has 11gb.

If you want the Ti get the Ti. The 2080S is not even close in specs. 2080 Ti aka BIG DADDY - 4352 cores, 616GB/s bandwidth, 76-78T RTX-OPS. It's still pricey but the 2080 Ti is the king of the hill.

It's still a serviceable GPU but I think the asking price is too much, see if u can get it at 200.

2080 Ti will still be a good chunk ahead of the 2080 Super. A decent aftermarket 2080 Ti for 990 bucks is actually not terrible price/performance considering those usually cost 1200 bucks.

Its got a very wide memory bus, roughly triple what most of the lower end 40 series cards have.

1080ti was 50% faster than the 980ti and it cost $700. The 2080ti is 30% faster than the 1080ti and costs $1k+. This is not in any way justified, stop cutting any slack. It's a trash product and nobody should buy it.

Nothing short of a 4090 has the Vram I want for Stable diffusion. And the 4090 was twice the price of my 3090, so I went with the latter for the best bang/buck. The 4070 super might as well not exist in terms of my requirements. The 3090 is a better card for many things.

I also just got a $200 EVGA XC Black 2080ti off of Marketplace for 1440p and I think it's the perfect card for me. I had a 3080 and i realized I have no need for all that power so I actually downgraded. DLDSR + DLSS on older games is such an underrated feature, plus I can enable RT with some compromises which for the price is unmatched.

2080ti sits a hair above the 3070. Its all over the place against the 5060 and 9060 8gb. In some games and resolutions the 2080ti shines, in others stays a little bit behind. The issue with 2080ti is that they were mined, a lot.

I recently had a 2080Ti EVGA FTW3 and it was still kicking a lot of ass - played a lot of games at 4k / 60fps, with some minor setting sacrifices here and there (if games didn't have dlss). Lies of P, for example ran at native 4k max settings locked 60.

2080 Ti performance is pretty much around same as 4060 Ti which costs 400-500€ in my country, so 200$ for 2080Ti is a decent enough deal, provided it's in good condition to last you at least a year.

The rtx 2080ti and the GTX 1080ti are the best gpus of all time, i bought a new 2080ti gaming x trio for 380€, i saw a 2080ti gaming x trio doing more FPS than a 3070ti gaming x trio.

It's a 3070 in rasterization with more Vram, worse RT performance, its a descent price.

Nice deal. But that thing has a 650W PSU requirement. Make sure you have atleast a quality 650W unit.

Just make sure you have at least an 800w psu that card is power hungry and also has big power spikes issues.

Make sure the condition is good. RTX 20 FE cards are notoriously difficult to service - clean/repaste etc.

It's solid. It's got the same features as a 3070, but more VRAM and a wider bus width. The 3070 is slightly faster in some cases using ray tracing though. I would personally get the 2080Ti if they were the same price.

The 2080ti is getting to be a little old to buy used for 260. It's only roughly on par with a 4060ti—not enough for 1440p Ultrawide. For reference, I upgraded to a 9070XT and still only get around 90fps at 1440p Ultrawide in AAA titles.

Thats a stupid asking price when a new 5060 or 9060xt arent that much more and will come with a warranty. Get that guy to drop the price down to 200 or less or get a new card.

2080ti's are THE deal. It seems that folks don't want to go 2 gens back for their GPU, so they are skipping this one, so it's price is usually great. If you found it bellow or at the price of a 3070, I say buy it. The extra 3GB will surely make the difference.

I have 2080Ti with R9 5950X and I play in 4K. It's not ideal, but definitely enjoyable. In case that you really want to enjoy 4K at 60FPS, I would recommend considering 3080, but if you're fine that sometimes you will have to play at 30-40FPS or adjust some settings to get better framerate, then it's fine.

At below $300 yes, the 2080 Ti is worth it. But if you can spare another $50-$80 you could step up to a used RTX 3080 which is a significant performance upgrade.

Coming from your rtx 2070 it's not the biggest improvement, vram is a big factor but not the only one. Turing is over 4 years old now and while still plenty capable, it's hard to recommend a 2080ti with unknown amount of life left. 20 series cards with first gen gddr6 are known to fail and that is a pricy repair as all memory chips need to be replaced.

For stable diffusion work, it's a great gpu in fp16 performance. It can hang with the 3080 and the 4070, what's great is I can undervolt it to 160w and still retain good performance in FP16.
